• Why isn't Java more widely used for game development?

  I'm not a game developer or anything, but I know that Java is not very widely used for game development. Java should be fast enough for most games, so where's the catch? I can think of some reasons: Lack of game developers with expertice in Java Lack of good game development frameworks Programmers don't want to accept Java as a games programming language. Most only accept C++ as that? No support for game consoles (though the PC market still exists) It could of course be something else. Could someone who knows the business better than me explain why Java isn't getting momentum when it comes to game development?

• Codestock: Apparently Powershell ain't got the power

  I checked on the status of voting on the Codestock (www.codestock.org) site this week. I was surpised to see that none of the Powershell sessions were among leaders in voting. Now, I confess that I am somewhat biased (my session is on Powershell), but that said, I thought it odd. I was under the impression that Powershell had a strong following and that many people were using it. I suppose the voting reflects a stronger developer community that might not make use of Powershell to degree some others might. I am a huge fan of Powershell and I am constantly impressed with the things it can do. In my case, I use it as lightweight functional testing harness for web pages. I use it in this capacity at work and for work I do for the Carbonated Comics (www.carbonatedcomics.com) site as well. If anyone still hasn't registered, do us a favor and vote for a Powershell session, K?

• Can't boot Ubuntu after install Ubuntu

  I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32 bit, burnt it on DVD and tried to install on my PC. My PC running in Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit mounted on C: drive. Now I want install Ubuntu along with my Windows 7. When I boot Ubuntu through CD, It boots and Ubuntu install window opens. Ask "Try Ubuntu" and "Install Ubuntu". I go on "Install Ubuntu". Then I go on install Ubuntu with Windows (First Option) - install. It shows some blank screen with some lines, and shows "Please Remove installation media and close tray and press enter". Then PC restarts and Run Windows 7 same as before normally. But Ubuntu is not installed. How to solve this problem and install Ubuntu on my PC properly? Note: I am a Android Developer. So I need to install Ubuntu for my Android Development purpose.

• Windows Azure Recipe: Software as a Service (SaaS)

  The cloud was tailor built for aspiring companies to create innovative internet based applications and solutions. Whether you’re a garage startup with very little capital or a Fortune 1000 company, the ability to quickly setup, deliver, and iterate on new products is key to capturing market and mind share. And if you can capture that share and go viral, having resiliency and infinite scale at your finger tips is great peace of mind. Drivers Cost avoidance Time to market Scalability Solution Here’s a sketch of how a basic Software as a Service solution might be built out: Ingredients Web Role – this hosts the core web application. Each web role will host an instance of the software and as the user base grows, additional roles can be spun up to meet demand. Access Control – this service is essential to managing user identity. It’s backed by a full blown implementation of Active Directory and allows the definition and management of users, groups, and roles. A pre-built ASP.NET membership provider is included in the training kit to leverage this capability but it’s also flexible enough to be combined with external Identity providers including Windows LiveID, Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook. The provider model provides extensibility to hook into other industry specific identity providers as well. Databases – nearly every modern SaaS application is backed by a relational database for its core operational data. If the solution is sold to organizations, there’s a good chance multi-tenancy will be needed. An emerging best practice for SaaS applications is to stand up separate SQL Azure database instances for each tenant’s proprietary data to ensure isolation from other tenants. Worker Role – this is the best place to handle autonomous background processing such as data aggregation, billing through external services, and other specialized tasks that can be performed asynchronously. Placing these tasks in a worker role frees the web roles to focus completely on user interaction and data input and provides finer grained control over the system’s scalability and throughput. Caching (optional) – as a web site traffic grows caching can be leveraged to keep frequently used read-only, user specific, and application resource data in a high-speed distributed in-memory for faster response times and ultimately higher scalability without spinning up more web and worker roles. It includes a token based security model that works alongside the Access Control service. Blobs (optional) – depending on the nature of the software, users may be creating or uploading large volumes of heterogeneous data such as documents or rich media. Blob storage provides a scalable, resilient way to store terabytes of user data. The storage facilities can also integrate with the Access Control service to ensure users’ data is delivered securely. • Should a domain expert make class diagrams?

  The domain expert in our team uses UML class diagrams to model the domain model. As a result, the class diagrams are more of technical models rather than domain models (it serves of some sort of technical specifications for developpers because they don't have to do any conception, they just have to implement the model). In the end, the domain expert ends up doing the job of the architect/technical expert right? Is it normal for a domain expert (not a developer or technical profile) to do class diagrams? If not, what kind of modeling should he be using?

• What programming languages have you taught your children?

  I'm a C# developer by trade but have had exposure to many languages (including Java, C++, and multiple scripting languages) over the course of my education and career. Since I code in the MS world for work I am most familiar with their stack and so I was excited when Small Basic was announced. I immediately started teaching my oldest to program in it but felt that something was missing from the experience. Being able to look up every command with the IDE's intellisense seemed to take something from the experience. Sure, it was easy to grasp but I found myself thinking that a little more challenge might be in order. I'm looking for something better and I would like to hear your experiences with teaching your children to program in whatever language you have chosen to do so in. What did you like and dislike? How fast did they pick it up? Were they challenged? Frustrated? Thank you very much!

• Adventures in Scrum: Lesson 1 &ndash; The failed Sprint

  I recently had a conversation with a product owner that wanted to have the Scrum team broken up into smaller units so that less time was wasted on the Scrum Ceremonies! Their complaint was around the need in Scrum to have the entire “Team” (7+-2) involved in the sizing of the work during the “Sprint Planning Meeting”.  The standard flippant answer of all Scrum professionals, “Well that's not Scrum”, does not get you any brownie points in these situations. The response could be “Well we are not doing Scrum then” which in turn leads to “We are doing Scrum…But, we have split the scrum team into units of 2/3 so that they can concentrate on a specific area of work”. While this may work, it is not Scrum and should not be called so… It is just a form of Agile. Don’t get me wrong at this stage, there is nothing wrong with Agile, just don’t call it Scrum. The reason that the Product Owner wants to do this is that, in effect, through a number of miscommunications and failings in our implementation of Scrum, there was NO unit of potentially Shippable software at the end of the first sprint. It does not matter to them that most Scrum teams will fail the first Sprint, even those that are high performing teams. Remember it is the product owners their money! We should NOT break up scrum teams into smaller units for the purpose of having less people tied up in the Scrum Ceremonies. The amount of backlog the Team selects is solely up to the Team… Only the Team can assess what it can accomplish over the upcoming Sprint. - Scrum Guide, Scrum.org The entire team must accept the work and in order to understand what they can accept they must be free to size it as a team. This both encourages common understanding and increases visibility on why team members think a task is of a particular size. This has the benefit of increasing the knowledge of the entire team in the problem domain. A new Team often first realizes that it will either sink or swim as a Team, not individually, in this meeting. The Team realizes that it must rely on itself. As it realizes this, it starts to self-organize to take on the characteristics and behaviour of a real Team. - Scrum Guide, Scrum.org This paragraph goes to the why of having the whole team at the meeting; The goal of Scrum it to produce a unit of potentially shippable software at the end of every Sprint. In order to achieve this we need high performing teams and this is what Scrum as a framework has been optimised to produce. I think that our Product Owner is understandably upset over loosing two weeks work and is losing sight the end goal of Scrum in the failures of the moment. As the man spending the money, I completely understand his perspective and I think that we should not have started Scrum on an internal project, but selected a customer  that is open to the ideas and complications of Scrum. So, what should we have NOT done on our first Scrum project: Should not have had 3 interns as the only on site resource – This lead to bad practices as the experienced guys were not there helping and correcting as they usually would. Should not have had the only experienced guys offsite – With both the experienced technical guys in completely different time zones it was difficult to get time for questions. Helping the guys on site was just plain impossible. Should not have used a part time ScrumMaster – Although the ScrumMaster attended all of the Ceremonies, because they are only in 2 full days of the week it makes it difficult for the team to raise impediments as they go. Should not have used a proxy product owner. – This was probably the worst decision that was made. Mainly because the proxy product owner did not have the same vision as the product owner. While Scrum does not explicitly reject the idea of a Proxy Product Owner, I do not think it works very well in practice. The “single wringable neck” needs to contain both the Money and the Vision as well as attending the required meetings. I will be brining all of these things up at the Sprint Retrospective and we will learn from our mistakes and move on. Recently I decided to explore Linux and learn a new development technology stack which is completely unrelated to Microsoft. After a bit of (re)search/reading I picked Ubuntu as my starting point. As I'm really a Pluralsight addict, preferring video courses as a starting point for learning new stuff, I wanted to ask if there are any decent video courses for Linux generally or Ubuntu focused ones? Basically I'm searching for general explanation of OS structure, a bit of system administration, and maybe some considerations for development on Linux system.

• Platforms for sharing content and expertise

  Are there any platforms / sites where people can share expertise in game development and where you can share (either payed or free) digital content (like images, sounds, animations but also frameworks or libraries) to be used in games? I'd also like the possibility to contact users and request specific pieces of content. I'd like to start out as an indie developer and have programming skills but I lack the experience and time to create ingame artwork and sound. Is there any site where I could locate other people (artists mostly) who would want to work on a game for free? I know I can get most technical questions answered on this site and I have some contacts but I'm affraid this won't be enough.

  The way I plan to use it is: Have people send SMS to a number to vote. On the backend (assuming that the data comes back to my Web server), I will display the voting results on my Web site. After say 10 minutes, I would like to press a button on my Web site so ONE of the people who sent an SMS earlier receive an SMS saying that person is a winner. I'm an ASP .Net developer, so I just need an API to code against. One such company I saw that does this (but is limited to US) is: http://www.twilio.com/sms/ Do you know any international providers that are similar to Twilio SMS? I'm based in Sydney, Australia. • Transferring Email to Google Apps - Timing

  I did a site for a client a few months back. Hosting & email was setup through Dreamhost VPS. Hosting has not been an issue, but email has become increasingly dodgy. Long story short, they want to transfer to Google Apps for Biz. They already have the mailboxes setup - they are on macs so they will be transferring using the gmail email importer for mac - my question is this - should they transfer their domain over first or their emails? I'm a developer so I have no problem changing their DNS settings, but I am not an IT manager type by any stretch so I am a bit in the dark about process - my proposed process was: Delete any junk/deleted mail from current environment Backup email locally copy emails to google apps via importer Switch domain and update mac mail settings It seems that doing the domain first would be best but I don't know if that is possible. I have been trying to find a generic checklist, but i haven't been able to.

• Thoughts on Development using Virtual Machines

  I'll be working as a development lead for a startup and I've suggested that we use VMs for development. I'm not talking about each developer having a desktop with VMs for testing/development, I mean having a server rack where all VMs are managed and have the developers work from a microPC (ChromeOS anyone?) locally, or even remotely from their home computer. To me, the benefits are the fact that it's extremely scalable, cheaper in the long run, easier to manage and that we utilize the hardware its maximum potential. As for cons, I can't think of any particular showstoppers other than we'll need someone to setup/maintain said setup. I was hoping that some of you might of had a similar setup at your place of employment and be able to weight in with your opinions. Thanks.

• Any good, easy to learn from books or tutorials for learning assembly? [on hold]

  I've been a developer since 2009 and I've learnt a lot of languages since, but I've always wanted to understand and be able to code in the lowest level language so I can directly (or at least very close to directly) speak to machines through my code. There was a point in time when someone showed me how to do an if statement in assembly, but out of all the books that I got, I could never really understand where/how to start learning to code in assembler. any help please? I'm obsessed with learning this! PS: if you have any software suggestions, I use ubuntu and am looking to convert to backtrack soon, so it would be preferred if you could give me something that'll be easily installed on debian linux, otherwise don't sweat it, give me the name of the windows software and I'll find an equivalent myself
