Improve my System, Need some advice/suggestion

Processor: 2.40 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5B-MX Memory: 2 Gb VideoCard: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT HDD: 80GB + 250GB both IDE Operating System: Windows 7 32bit Please give me some advice what to improve in my System. I mainly used it for Graphic Design (eg, Photoshop, Cinema4d, Illustrator, Flash). I was planning to increase my Memory adding 2 GB more, Pushing it to something like 4GB in total. But just found out that recently that I already have 2x2GB installed and should be 4GB in total. When I looked at the properties of my computer, It said "Installed Memory 2GB". I wonder why is that happening? Is the other ram broken?.. I never the computer casing since I bought. so I didn't realize that I already have 2 x 2gb ram. what can you advice. Thanks!

IE9 development tools giving "Unable to attach to the process." error

Notice: I have now rebuilt my machine to remove this bug, so I can no longer verify any answers. I recently installed Internet Explorer 9, and activated the development tools by pressing F12; I then clicked "script" and the "start debugging" button but I got the following error: Unable to attach to the process. Another debugger might be attached to the process. I get this message regardless of the site I am on (currently I'm on google.com). I have no other applications running, and have rebooted my machine. Can anyone suggest why this may be appearing?

What could cause a program to stay in "Add/Remove Programs" even after removing from registry

Trying to manually remove an entry from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. (custom software, not MS KB patch or windows component and not doing anyting 'funky' like trying to stop itself form being uninstalled) Followed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314481 removing all applicable registry keys for program from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ and even tried rebooting but still it persists. Double checked followed KB314481 and search for program name doesn't return any other matches in that part of the registry. Any ideas what would cause this or how to solve?

USB Hub and Ubuntu

I have a powered 7 port hub connected to my Ubuntu box and it does nothing. The devices (zip drive and web cam) work direct, but aren't recognized through the hub. This worked fine in Windows 7. I can't prove it is the OS because this is a new motherboard and processor. Any advice? Why is my Internet connection randomly dropping?

Ever since I have installed 12.04 (clean install not an upgrade), i have been having a drop in the Internet connection. The drop in the connection can be anything from 15 seconds to about 3 mins, and then the connection comes back. This behaviour happens while I am actively browsing the Internet, or if I wake up the computer and open Firefox (sometimes I have connection and sometimes I don't) . Please note that when the internet connection is on, it is not slow (as speedtest.net results show) In the beginning, I thought it was a problem with the driver r8169 for my RTL8111/8168B Ethernet card, so I downloaded the r8168 from Realtek website, followed the detailed instructions (blacklisted r8169, changed the file to '.bsh' ...), but still the same problem persisted. So I switched to a wireless connection, and I got the same problem with internet connection dropping randomly. Any ideas? At the same time server post replies so when after each sent frame we try to read from socket we receive which timestamp is currently on server. if timestamp is lover than previous frame we lover bit rate 20%. Such scheme seems to work giving me one way vbr (lowering) but I wonder how to implement increase? I mean we can always try to increase 5% each frame until some limited desired value but each time we have delay will lose real-time feature of our stream... Generally such scheme is for finding out how much of network stream is currently used by other user apps and give picture of how much server is loaded at the same time so we can stream just right amount of data for all to receive it in real time. So what shall I do to add increase to my scheme? So having current bit rate of A I thought we could add +7% for 3 frames and than one -20% and than if all that 3 frames with +7% came in time we could add 14% to A and repeat circle and it would hopefully not be really noticeable if 2nd frame wold come to us with delay... probably this one is too localised because it is a requirement for me to use TCP.

Find three numbers appeared only once

In a sequence of length n, where n=2k+3, that is there are k unique numbers appeared twice and three numbers appeared only once. The question is: how to find the three unique numbers that appeared only once? for example, in sequence 1 1 2 6 3 6 5 7 7 the three unique numbers are 2 3 5. Note: 3<=n<1e6 and the number will range from 1 to 2e9 Memory limits: 1000KB , this implies that we can't store the whole sequence. Method I have tried(Memory limit exceed): I initialize a tree, and when read in one number I try to remove it from the tree, if the remove returns false(not found), I add it to the tree. Finally, the tree has the three numbers. It works, but is Memory limit exceed. I know how to find one or two such number(s) using bit manipulation. So I wonder if we can find three using the same method(or some method similar)? Method to find one/two number(s) appeared only once: If there is one number appeared only once, we can apply XOR to the sequence to find it. If there are two, we can first apply XOR to the sequence, then separate the sequence into 2 parts by one bit of the result that is 1, and again apply XOR to the 2 parts, and we will find the answer.

Fastest way to clamp a real (fixed/floating point) value?

Hi, Is there a more efficient way to clamp real numbers than using if statements or ternary operators? I want to do this both for doubles and for a 32-bit fixpoint implementation (16.16). I'm not asking for code that can handle both cases; they will be handled in separate functions. Obviously, I can do something like: double clampedA; double a = calculate(); clampedA = a > MY_MAX ? MY_MAX : a; clampedA = a < MY_MIN ? MY_MIN : a; or double a = calculate(); double clampedA = a; if(clampedA > MY_MAX) clampedA = MY_MAX; else if(clampedA < MY_MIN) clampedA = MY_MIN; The fixpoint version would use functions/macros for comparisons. This is done in a performance-critical part of the code, so I'm looking for an as efficient way to do it as possible (which I suspect would involve bit-manipulation) EDIT: It has to be standard/portable C, platform-specific functionality is not of any interest here. Also, MY_MIN and MY_MAX are the same type as the value I want clamped (doubles in the examples above).

First we find the MSB of the first integer, and then try to find a region of N contiguous zero bits within the second number which is to the left of the MSB from the first integer. How to optimize this simple function which translates input bits into words?

I have written a function which reads an input buffer of bytes and produces an output buffer of words where every word can be either 0x0081 for each ON bit of the input buffer or 0x007F for each OFF bit. The length of the input buffer is given. Both arrays have enough physical place. I also have about 2Kbyte free RAM which I can use for lookup tables or so. Now, I found that this function is my bottleneck in a real time application. It will be called very frequently. Can you please suggest a way how to optimize this function? Why does pinging a local router return "Destination Host Unreachable"?

I have two tomato routers. One is bridged wirelessly with the other. I have a new server on the network. It's running Ubuntu Server 11.04. They are all connected like this: A - Linux PC B - New Server C - Mac Mini D - Macbook T1 - Tomato 1 T2 - Tomato 2 They are connected like so: A -----+-T1 ==== wireless bridge ==== T2----- ADSL modem | | C & D Connected wirelessly to T2 B -----+ A, C & D do not experience any issues. I have an active SSH session to B from A and it's not experiencing any loss. B, the new server occasionally cannot ping T2 and therefore cannot connect to the internet. However, A can always contact B and B can ping A and B When the network is lost, B can still ping T1, but not T2 yet at the same as B has lost connection to T2, A can still ping T2. Any ideas on what this could be? there is nothing that gives any clues in any of the logs on either router or the linux server. One thing that is interesting is that I set up a ping running between B and T2. This is an "can it be improved"-question. Topic: Storing typed objects in memory. Background information: I'm building a compiler for the x86-32 Windows platform for my language. My goal includes typed objects. Idea: Every primitive is a semi-class (it can be used as if it was a normal class, but it's stored more compact). Every class is represented by primitives and some meta-data (containing class-properties, inheritance stuff, etc.). The meta-data is complex: it doesn't use fields but instead context-switches. For primitives, the meta-data is very small, compared to a "real" class, which is alot bigger. This enables another idea that "primitives are objects", in my language, which I found nessecairy. Example: If I have an array of 32 booleans, then the pure content of this array is exactly 4 byte (32 bits of booleans). The meta-data will contain flags that the type is an array of booleans, which contains 32 entries. The meta-data is very compacted, on bit-level: using a sort of "packing" mechanism, which is read by a FSM at runtime, when doing inspection of the type (like when passing the object to methods for checking, etc.) For instance (read from left to right, top to bottom, remember vertical position when going to the right, and check nearest column header for meaning of switch): Primitive? Array? Type-Meta 1 Byte? || Size (1 byte) 1 1 [...] 1 [...] done 0 2 Bytes? || Size (2 bytes) 1 [...] done || Size (4 bytes) 0 [...] done Integer? 1 Byte? 2 Bytes? 0 1 0 1 done 1 done 0 done Boolean? Byte? 0 1 0 done 1 done More-Primitives 0 .... Class-Stuff (Huge) 0 ... (After reaching done the data is inserted. || = byte alignment. Drawbacks of using an integer as a bitfield?

I have a bunch of boolean options for things like "accepted payment types" which can include things like cash, credit card, cheque, paypal, etc. Rather than having a half dozen booleans in my DB, I can just use an integer and assign each payment method an integer, like so PAYMENT_METHODS = ( (1<<0, 'Cash'), (1<<1, 'Credit Card'), (1<<2, 'Cheque'), (1<<3, 'Other'), ) and then query the specific bit in python to retrieve the flag. I know this means the database can't index by specific flags, but are there any other drawbacks?

Help me understand why page sizes are a power of 2?

Answer I need help with is: Recall that paging is implemented by breaking up an address into a page and offset number. It is most efficient to break the address into X page bits and Y offset bits, rather than perform arithmetic on the address to calculate the page number and offset. Because each bit position represents a power of 2, splitting an address between bits results in a page size that is a power of 2. i don't quite understand this answer, can anyone give a simpler explanation?
