  • Ideal way/architecture to deliver large data over Web Services

    We are trying to design 6 web services, which will serve another client component. The client component requires data from the web service we are implementing. Now, the problem is, there is not 1 WS we are implementing, there is one WS which the client component hits, this initiates a series (5 more) of WSs which gather data from their respective data stores and finally provide the data back to the original WS, which then delivers the data back to the client component. So, if the requested data becomes huge, then, this will be a serious problem for our internal communication channel. So, what do you guys suggest? What can be done to avoid overloading of the communication channel between the internal WS and at the same time, also delivering the data to the client component.

  • Why does mobile first responsive design tend to not use max-width queries alongside the min-width queries?

    First off, I understand the basic principles behind mobile first responsive web design, and totally agree with them. But one thing I don't understand: In my experience, not all styles for small screens can be used for the larger version of a website. For example, usually smaller versions tend to have larger clickable areas, hamburger navigation, etc. So I sometimes have to override these specific styles, aside from just progressively enhancing the base styles. So I was wondering: why is max-width rarely mentioned (or used) in the context of mobile-first responsive web design? Because it looks like it could be used to isolate styles for smaller screens that are not useful for larger screens, and would thus prevent unnecessary duplication of code. A quote which mentions min-width as typically mobile-first, but not max-width: Mobile first, from a coding perspective, means that your base style is typically a single-column, fully-fluid layout.   • Phonegap: Will my mobile app 'feel' faster or slower once ported to phonegap?

    So I'm designing everything in mobile Safari and I know that phonegap is essentially a stripped webview but... Question: Will my application will run better in phonegap? (revised below) a)I imagine my navigation and core app will load faster as the scripts and images are on the hard drive. Is this True? b)I assume since they've been working on it for 2 years now that they may have made some optimizations to make it quicker than just an average safari window. Is this true? (Assuming both html5/js/css code bases are pretty much the same and app is running on iOS.) Update: Sorry, I meant to compare apples to slightly different apples. Question 1 revised: Will my app see any performance benefits running with in a phonegap environment vs standard mobile safari? (compare mobile - to mobile) 1b) In what ways, other than loading time has phonegap optimized performance over standard mobile safari? Follow ups: 1) Are there any pitfalls, other than large libraries, that may cause phonegap to suffer a serious performance hit vs stand mobile safari? 2) Can I mix native and webview rendering? (i.e the top half of my app is rendered in with html/css/js and the bottom half native)

  • SSRS 2005 inaccessible after install

    Hi I've just installed SQL 2005 and Database Engine is ok, however I can't access it for nothing. When I go to http://localhost/reports I get this prompt for a username and password and it fails with 401.1. When I tried to disable kerberos on the virtual directories, nothing changed. I've tried changing the auth to anonymous and get: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. When I access from another machine, I get the prompt only once and get this error. Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Can't access this with IE or SSMS 2005. If I try to access with Management Studio i get this error: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (System) An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host (System) BUTTONS: OK By the way the server info: its a Win 2003 R2 Standard with IIS 6 Can't seem to understand this. Does anyone have a hint?

  • Windows service runs file locally but not on server

    I created a simple Windows service in dot net which runs a file. When I run the service locally I see the file running in the task manager just fine. However, when I run the service on the server it won't run the file. I've checked the path to the file which is fine. I also checked the permissions on the folder and file, and they fine as well. Also there are no exceptions happening. Below is the code used to launch the process which runs the file. I posted this first on stack overflow, and some people were thinking this is a config issue, so I moved it here.   • High latency issue for web service call from amazon aws ec2 to local server

    We have a legacy web application that is running in our data center on premises located in Houston. We have a developed a new .net 4 based web application in order to provide new features to customers. The new web application is hosted in amazon aws ec2 environment (N. Virginia region us-east-1b zone). In order to get seamlessly integrate with the legacy application the new web application makes web service calls to retrieve data. We are seeing an unusually high latency time in the order of 5+ seconds for these web service calls. The exact same web service call returns in less than a second on our local PCs (which makes sense given physical proximity to the actual server). The weird part is that we have developers in California who also have the same milliseconds response time. We are testing the web service response using third party tools such as SoapUI, Google Chrome extensions such as Advanced REST Client, Postman REST Client, etc. As if this wasnt weird enough, we have noticed the same low latency from certain other ec2 instances while testing which are in the same region and availability zone as well. If we experienced the high latency consistently from all the ec2 instances I could understand. But there is something else going on. Comparing the various stats and results between the low latency and high latency ec2 servers do not show any significant differences: ping (constant 40ms), tracert, winmtr, etc. We have instances that are in the VPC as well. So I tried both the public and private IP address of the web service host server and that didnt make a difference either for the above results. We need to resolve this latency issue as this is causing the resulting web pages to load very slowly (almost 15+ seconds which is simply unacceptable). The ec2 instances have Windows Server Datacenter 64 bit. Let me know if there is any other infor I can provide to help diagnose this.

  • How do I disable the firewall on blackberry?

    I own a Blackberry 9630 tour.(Sprint). The firewall is enabled with a lock sign and grayed out. I'm not able to disable it. Because of this many of my blackberry apps don't work as it gives a message "The application has tried to open a connection that's not allowed by your IT policy". I tried all options and there's nothing to disable. This is a personal blackberry and I don't have an IT policy on it. I did all methods like wiping, formatting/resetting to factory settings acc. to blackberry site by running their reset app from PC etc etc. but nothing works I tried CrackUtil for blackberry and that worked and wiped the blackberry. I restored my bb and started using it just to notice that the firewall is enabled back after a desktop manager connection to PC. I even made sure the policy.bin file on PC is a regular one with no IT policy. How do I get this disabled? I had the same problem on my old blackberry 8330 and crackutil disabled the firewall. but after a few days after a desktop manager update of blackberry OS and other small stuff the firewall got enabled again. Please give me a solutions to disable the firewall on blackberry

  • Configuring WS-Security with PeopleSoft Web Services

    I was speaking with a customer a few days ago about PeopleSoft Web Services.  The customer created a web service but when they went to deploy it, they had so many problems configuring ws-security, they pulled the service.  They spent several days trying to get it working but never got it working so they've put it on hold until they have time to work through the issues. Having gone through the process of configuring ws-security myself, I understand the complexity.  There is no magic 'easy' button to push.  If you are not familiar with all the moving parts like policies, certificates, public and private keys, credential stores, and so on, it can be a daunting task.  PeopleBooks documentation is good but does not offer a step-by-step example to follow.  Fear not, for those that want more help, there is a place to go. PeopleSoft released a Mobile Inventory Management application over a year ago.  It is a mobile app built with Oracle Fusion Application Development Framework (ADF) that accesses PeopleSoft content through standard web services.  Part of the installation of this app is configuring ws-security for the web services used in the application.  Appendix A of the PeopleSoft FSCM91 Mobile Inventory Management Installation Guide is called Configuring WS-Security for Mobile Inventory Management.  It is a step-by-step guide to configure ws-security between a server running Oracle Web Server Management (OWSM) and PeopleSoft Integration Broker.  Your environment might be different, but the steps will be similar, and on the PeopleSoft side, Integration Broker will remain a constant. You can find the installation guide on Oracle Suport.  Sign in to https://support.us.oracle.com and search for document 1290972.1.  Read through Appendix A for more details about how to set up ws-security with PeopleSoft web services.

    Last Saturday I went to 'Developer Developer Developer 10' on the Microsoft campus at Reading (UK). This is one of a series of regular events put on by the developer community for the developer community. The guys who organise these events put in a huge amount of time and effort into them and they are well worth getting to if you can.I enjoy these events because there's always something currently relevant but also I can get an insight into things I don't normally come across or work with.Having said that, it's web related things that always grab my attention and this year one of my favourite speakers, George Adamson, gave a session on 'Designing for mobile (aka designing for everything)'.   • Rails solution for mobile-specific content filter?

    To note, I'm not interested in simply 'hiding' content for mobile devices, I want to filter out that content completely. I'm also not trying to address the issue by building a mobile specific interface (mob.example.com). There was another question regarding something similar: How do I prevent useless content load on the page in responsive design? The solution, in that post, was to set a session during the initial request, and then use the session to filter content on subsequent requests. I primarily develop in Rails, and I'm wondering if there are any gems or ruby-specific solutions to this problem?

I want to start learning mobile device development, but I am someone that gets much more motivated when there is some goal to reach. Because of that, I would like to join a competition. I know about Microsoft Imagine Cup, which is a very nice competition. Does anyone knows another mobile development competition with a deadline in the next 6~8 months? I have been googling for it, but I could not find any, maybe someone knows about something that I couldn't find. Thanks for your help :)
