• How do I make the top panel transparent in Unity?

  I'm using a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 using Unity. I'm a newbie to Ubuntu and whilst researching various how-to's, I have seen screenshots where Ubuntu has the bar at the top of the screen shown transparent. I really like this, but I can't get it to do it on my box. I have tried CCSM (2 different methods), Ambience theme editing (a copy) but it always shows as black. I log out after each change and then log back in. Should I be restarting? I'm running: Asus P5Q Pro Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz x4 GeForce 9600GT 32-bit OS 4x 1GB DDR2 RAM Modules (although BIOS only shows I'm using ~3GB)

• Can't see YouTube videos in either Firefox or Chromium

  Dont' know why or if it is related, after upgrading Ubuntu 10.04 kernel ( I guess from 2.6.32-38 to -42) I can's see youtube videos. I checked the flash plug-ins installed and I have: (1) flashplugin-installer, (2) flashplugin-nonfree and (3) flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound. I haven't reinstalled the browsers yet.   I am trying to split my code in different layers: GUI, reading the GUI, creating input, calculating the model, interpreting data, creating view, sending the view to the GUI. I got the idea of the MVC and would like to try to build my program that way. But I'm a little confused about how to exchange information between those modules. I'm running into problems with undefined global names and so forth. • Futures/Monads vs Events

  So, the question is quite simple: in an application framework, when performance impact can be ignored (10-20 events per second at max), what is more maintainable and flexible to use as a preferred medium for communication between modules - Events or Futures/Promices/Monads ? Its often being said, that Events (pub/sub, mediator) allow loose-coupling and thus - more maintainable app... My experience deny this: once you have more that 20+ events - debugging becomes hard, and so is refactoring - because it is very hard to see: who, when and why uses what. Promices (i'm coding in javascript) are much uglier and dumber, than Events. But: you can clearly see connections between function calls, so application logic becomes more straight-forward. What i'm afraid. though, is that Promices will bring more hard-coupling with them... p.s: the answer does not have to be based on JS, experience from other functional languages is much welcome.

  I don't understand a lot about game engines and modules for Python, even though I'm aware of the existance of PyGame and Pyglets, so please don't bash me too hard if I'll wrote something wrong in this question :-) When I upgraded my Mac to the latest version of OS X, I noticed for the first time that Apple is providing a library named Sprite kit for developing games on both iOS and OS X. It looks to me fairly complete, and the fact is managed by a big company gives me the impression of being well-supported for the time being; in summary, it looks... cool. Actually in order to take advantage of "Sprite kit" you need to code in Obj-C. Since I don't know Obj-C but only a little bit of Python, do you think that there's a chance that sooner or later someone will make a wrapper for Python ? Thank you very much and best regards

  I'm recently having a problem in my Lubuntu deskptop: sound through the speakers doesn't seem to work. The funny thing is: it works when I plug in my earphones.   If embedding Pygame to C++ to have a game be an executable, is there any extra process I would have to use in order to use Pygame functions when embedding into C++? As opposed to just writing embedding code in C++ for normal Python code? To clear cut the question I want to know if it's the same process without having to call different functions.   I manage a team of coders (5people) that maintain a few modules in a large project. On top of doing coding, we also do production operational tasks (like doing server housekeeping, batch backlog tracking) These tasks are done daily, done by 1 person, and is rotated weekly The problem is this: These tasks are routine, but there I cant think of a practical way of ensuring the person does what he is supposed to do. I thought of using spreadsheets to track, or to the extent of doing a paper checklist, which the person on duty will have to physically sign off. I just want the guy on duty to remember and execute every daily item. What works on your project?

  I have been working with a nice Gent but I am getting stuck. I am just getting back in to Linux and Ubuntu was recommended. I like the look so far but the wireless isn't working I run the update and when it says complete it hangs at the end. Please let me know what to do at this point. • VMware Player and Ubuntu 12.04 - Full Screen

  I have installed VMware Player 4.0.2 under Ubuntu 12.04 (Final) and, apart from having to patch the modules, everything went smoothly. However, there's an irritating behavior when toggling full screen mode: toggling full screen (using Virtual Machine Toggle Full Screen or Ctrl + Alt + Return), minimizing the player and maximizing it again changes the resolution of the guest to some strange one and the player gets "nested" between GNOME3's taskbar as every other of Ubuntu's native windows. To switch to full screen again I have to Ctrl + Alt + Return twice. Can anyone please tell me if this is the nromal, expected behavior? Is there any way of "correcting" it? The host operating system is Ubuntu 12.04 (Final) and the guest is Windows 7 (both 64 bits).

• How to disable low disk space notification? (Gnome 3, Ubuntu 12.04)

  I've got an SSD drive for root and /home, and a larger HDD for storage. The storage disk is almost full, and there's a low disk space warning on startup. The warning doesn't have any "don't show again" option, only "ignore" and "examine". It also doesn't go away but sticks on the screen until the ignore button is clicked, so it's very annoying in addition to being competely unnecessary. I tried unselecting the storage HDD in baobab's settings, but that didn't have any effect. I also tried gconf-editor, and looked for apps - gnome_settings_daemon - plugins - housekeeping, but there is no "plugins" under "gnome_settings_daemon". Only "gtk-modules" and "keybindings".
