  • grub2 error : out of disk

    - by Nostradamnit
Hi everyone, I recently install ArchBang on a machine with Ubuntu and XP. I ran update-grub from Ubuntu and it found the new install and created an entry. However, when I try to boot it, I get: error: out of disk error: you need to load kernel first I've tried several things, including adding a new entry in 40_custom, but nothing changes. Here are the entries I have: default found by update-grub ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ### menuentry "ArchBang Linux (on /dev/sda4)" { insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,msdos4)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 75f96b44-3a8f-4727-9959-d669b9244f2a linux /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda4 rootfstype=ext4 ro xorg=vesa quiet nomodeset swapon initrd /boot/kernel26.img } menuentry "ArchBang Linux Fallback (on /dev/sda4)" { insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,msdos4)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 75f96b44-3a8f-4727-9959-d669b9244f2a linux /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda4 rootfstype=ext4 ro xorg=vesa quiet nomodeset swapon initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img } ### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ### custom entry in 40_custom based on various ideas found on the internets menuentry "ArchBang Linux (on /dev/sda4)" { insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,msdos4)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 75f96b44-3a8f-4727-9959-d669b9244f2a linux /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/75f96b44-3a8f-4727-9959-d669b9244f2a rootfstype=ext4 ro xorg=vesa quiet nomodeset swapon initrd /boot/kernel26.img } I think the problem has something to do with the sda4 not being mounted at boot-time... Thanks in advance for you help, Sam

  • how do I fix a wrong UUID in grub.cfg?

    - by mozerella
I run Debian Wheezy alone on my PC and I recently copied the root partition to another with rsync as I found that worked well (I also know about dd and ddrescue but they leave unusable space on the new partition). I generated a new random UUID for the new partition with sudo tune2fs -U random /dev/hda9 and also updated fstab / and /home entries. Then as I know so little about GRUB I used a gui (GRUB Customizer) to probe for the new OS and add an entry to GRUB and the MBR -it makes an /etc/grub.d entry then updates GRUB. On startup, the GRUB list contains the new OS (on sda9) but it boots the first OS (which I copied from -sda5). /boot/grub/grub.cfg contains the new debian OS but it looks like this set root='(hd0,msdos9)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 64662470-0e58-4dfd-90ac-43227d773556 linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-2-amd64 root=UUID=cc3bca0d-aee4-4b9c-95c2-57212cc36d4d ro quiet initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-2-amd64 the 1st uuid is of sda9, but the 2nd uuid there is of sda5. I can change the 2nd uuid at startup (with E) and it boots sda9. So how can I get grub.cfg corrected so that the sda9 GRUB list entry boots from sda9 permanently?

  • Firefox v15.0 about:newtab inaccessible via the back button

    - by Willem
As of this morning I upgraded my Firefox to version 15.0. Or well, it did it for me. That's when my issue began. I've configured Firefox so that when I open up a new tab via Ctrl-T that it loads the about:newtab page which was released in version 14.x(?). I use this functionality extensively. I visit a page from the about:newtab page, read it, press the back button and pick another frequent website from the display I want to visit. However as of v15.0 the latter part is no longer functioning, after visiting a website from the about:newtab page the back button will not let me go back to the about:newtab page. Firefox acts as if that history entry was never there. I've tried searching the release notes to see if this change was intentional or a reported bug, but I have not found anything related so far. Is there anyway to (re)configure the new Firefox v15.0 to let me access the about:newtab page via a tab's history? EDIT: It appears that this only affects the initial 'visit' to the about:newtab page when opening a new tab, manually visiting about:newtab will register it as a history entry and allow it to be navigated to via the back and forward buttons. So I guess this changes my question to 'How can I make Firefox 15.0 treat the inital page from a newtab as a history entry'.

  • How to set static ip address on vmware for NAT guest vms from an ubuntu Host dhcp server?

    - by javadba
I need to configure various linux flavor NAT'ed guest vm's to have static ip addresses provided by the Ubuntu host. The vmware documentation punts on this topic, deferring to "see the man pages for your linux distribution". But the generic pages for "my linux distro" do not know about the special stuff for vmware e.g. vmnet8. Pointers from someone who just knows how to do this would be much appreciated. Here is the /etc/vmware/vmnet8/dhcpd/dhcpd.conf: allow unknown-clients; default-lease-time 1800; # default is 30 minutes max-lease-time 7200; # default is 2 hours subnet 192.168.238.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 192.168.238.128 192.168.238.254; option broadcast-address 192.168.238.255; option domain-name-servers 192.168.238.2; option domain-name localdomain; default-lease-time 1800; # default is 30 minutes max-lease-time 7200; # default is 2 hours option netbios-name-servers 192.168.238.2; option routers 192.168.238.2; } host vmnet8 { hardware ethernet 00:50:56:C0:00:08; fixed-address 192.168.238.1; option domain-name-servers 0.0.0.0; option domain-name ""; option routers 0.0.0.0; } Fromt the dhcpd.conf documentation, we are supposed to add an entry for static hosts similar to the following: host mystatichostonee { hardware ethernet 00:20:6B:C7:9B:E4; fixed-address 192.168.238.101; } host mystatichosttwo { hardware ethernet 00:23:7a:C7:9c:F2; fixed-address 192.168.238.102; } But notice that the vmnet8 entry in the vmware-generated dhcpd.conf already is set to fixed-address. I don't know how to add the specifics for my hosts to that vmnet8 entry: do they become nested?

  • How can I make grub2 boot into Windows 7?

    - by Grzenio
I had Windows 7 installed on my system, then I installed Debian testing with grub2 as its boot manager. Initially I couldn't see windows entry in grub at all, so I ran: aptitude install os-prober kcpuload update-grub Now I can see the entry, but when I select it I get only Win7 system restore, instead of the the real thing. Any ides how to make it work? EDIT: I tried the suggested approach to add a new file to /etc/grub.d, which generated an entry in grub.cfg, but it does not appear in the grub menu on boot :( I have this: grzes:/home/ga# cat /etc/grub.d/11_Windows #! /bin/sh -e echo Adding Windows >&2 cat << EOF menuentry “Windows 7? { set root=(hd0,2) chainloader +1 } And I have the following grub.cfg file: grzes:/home/ga# cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### if [ -s $prefix/grubenv ]; then load_env fi set default="0" if [ ${prev_saved_entry} ]; then set saved_entry=${prev_saved_entry} save_env saved_entry set prev_saved_entry= save_env prev_saved_entry set boot_once=true fi function savedefault { if [ -z ${boot_once} ]; then saved_entry=${chosen} save_env saved_entry fi } insmod ext2 set root=(hd0,3) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 6ce3ff31-0ef7-41df-a6f5-b6b886db3a94 if loadfont /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=640x480 insmod gfxterm insmod vbe if terminal_output gfxterm ; then true ; else # For backward compatibility with versions of terminal.mod that don't # understand terminal_output terminal gfxterm fi fi set locale_dir=/boot/grub/locale set lang=en insmod gettext set timeout=5 ### END /etc/grub.d/00_header ###

  • Strange IP address showing up with OS X ssh

    - by user50799
I was futzing around with DTrace on Mac OS X and found the following script that prints out information about connections being established: $ cat script.d syscall::connect:entry { printf("execname: %s\n", execname); printf("pid: %d\n", pid); printf("sockfd: %d\n",arg0); socks = (struct sockaddr*)copyin(arg1, arg2); hport = (uint_t)socks->sa_data[0]; lport = (uint_t)socks->sa_data[1]; hport <<= 8; port = hport + lport; printf("Port number: %d\n", port); printf("IP address: %d.%d.%d.%d\n", socks->sa_data[2], socks->sa_data[3], socks->sa_data[4], socks->sa_data[5]); printf("======\n"); } I run it in one window: $ sudo dtrace -s ./script.d Then I ssh to another machine from another window. I get this output from my dtrace window: CPU ID FUNCTION:NAME 0 18696 connect:entry execname: ssh pid: 5446 sockfd: 3 Port number: 22 IP address: 192.168.0.207 ====== 0 18696 connect:entry execname: ssh pid: 5446 sockfd: 5 Port number: 12148 IP address: 109.112.47.108 ====== ^C The first IP address I can explain (192.168.0.207), that's the machine I'm connecting to. But what's with the 109.112.47.108 machine? It doesn't show up in tcpdump nor netstat -an Is there something with my dtrace code or my understanding of how the connect system call works?

  • glusterfs mounts get unmounted when 1 of the 2 bricks goes offline

    - by Shiquemano
I have an odd case where 1 of the 2 replicated glusterfs bricks will go offline and take all of the client mounts down with it. As I understand it, this should not be happening. It should fail over to the brick that is still online, but this hasn't been the case. I suspect that this is due to configuration issue. Here is a description of the system: 2 gluster servers on dedicated hardware (gfs0, gfs1) 8 client servers on vms (client1, client2, client3, ... , client8) Half of the client servers are mounted with gfs0 as the primary, and the other half are pointed at gfs1. Each of the clients are mounted with the following entry in /etc/fstab: /etc/glusterfs/datavol.vol /data glusterfs defaults 0 0 Here is the content of /etc/glusterfs/datavol.vol: volume datavol-client-0 type protocol/client option transport-type tcp option remote-subvolume /data/datavol option remote-host gfs0 end-volume volume datavol-client-1 type protocol/client option transport-type tcp option remote-subvolume /data/datavol option remote-host gfs1 end-volume volume datavol-replicate-0 type cluster/replicate subvolumes datavol-client-0 datavol-client-1 end-volume volume datavol-dht type cluster/distribute subvolumes datavol-replicate-0 end-volume volume datavol-write-behind type performance/write-behind subvolumes datavol-dht end-volume volume datavol-read-ahead type performance/read-ahead subvolumes datavol-write-behind end-volume volume datavol-io-cache type performance/io-cache subvolumes datavol-read-ahead end-volume volume datavol-quick-read type performance/quick-read subvolumes datavol-io-cache end-volume volume datavol-md-cache type performance/md-cache subvolumes datavol-quick-read end-volume volume datavol type debug/io-stats option count-fop-hits on option latency-measurement on subvolumes datavol-md-cache end-volume The config above is the latest attempt at making this behave properly. I have also tried the following entry in /etc/fstab: gfs0:/datavol /data glusterfs defaults,backupvolfile-server=gfs1 0 0 This was the entry for half of the clients, while the other half had: gfs1:/datavol /data glusterfs defaults,backupvolfile-server=gfs0 0 0 The results were exactly the same as the above configuration. Both configs connect everything just fine, they just don't fail over. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Enterprise Redirection Services?

    - by Aaron Alton
This is probably a case of "if I new what it was called, I could google it in 5 minutes" - but I don't know what it's called. It's probably best to explain the requirement using an example. We have a number of services (vpn, owa, etc) which we host from one of our datacenters. We have a number of datacenters, and we technically have the infrastructure already in place to support these services at a number of our datacenters. To provide access to these "services", I would create an external DNS entry (ex. VPN.MyCompany.com Gateway IP for one of my DCs), and clients will connect to it via the DNS entry. Since I have multiple datacenters that can support this service, I could theoretically offer a "highly available, geographically dispersed" solution if I could point this DNS entry to some sort of third party who offers highly available "redirection" services. If my primary site goes down, I could just make a change via some management console and configure the redirector to point to a different DC. Of course, it would be fairly straightforward to set this sort of thing up on one of our servers, but that would kinda defeat the purpose of a highly available third party. Is anyone familiar with a service like this? I'm thinking something like DynDNS, but with Enterprise availability guarantees.

  • How do I know if I managed to completely remove an undetected trojan?

    - by ubuntuisbetter
I catched a trojan that uses explorer.exe to reproduce itself in case of deletion of its autostart entry or main exe file in Programs/x. It had already tried to contact a suspicious server over explorer.exe, blocked that via my firewall. I: Removed the autostart entries from the registry Looked through my services if there was anything suspicious Deleted the trojan from Programs/ Went through System Volume Information to find a 2 month old explorer.exe and replaced the possibly infected one. There are no suspicious processes running now anymore (no duplicate explorer.exe) and nothing wants to connect this trojan owners sever either. I checked my system with several anti-malware programs too. What the trojan did: Started a second explorer.exe Always when I deleted the main trojan exe file it was reproduced (by the second explorer.exe) Always when I deleted the autostart entry it was reproduced by the explorer.exe too. When I terminated the suspicious explorer.exe, which used only half as much memory as the less suspicious one from Windows, a strange thing that I know from the computers in my Informatics class happened: A window popped up in the top left of my explorer-less desktop, titled "Personal settings for ... are ..." that obviously copied some files. Then both explorer.exes started again and the trojan was everywhere again. What did the trojan actually do to get explorer to rescue it? Is my PC clean of this newish trojan now? What are the other locations I should check for the trojan? The trjoan doesn't seem very high-level, could it have changed other system files or is the autostart entry vital for it? Thanks in advance, Your trojan paranoid friend (Getting linux in a week)

  • ContentType Issue -- Human is an idiot - Can't figure out how to tie the original model to a Content

    - by bmelton
Originally started here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2650181/django-in-query-as-a-string-result-invalid-literal-for-int-with-base-10 I have a number of apps within my site, currently working with a simple "Blog" app. I have developed a 'Favorite' app, easily enough, that leverages the ContentType framework in Django to allow me to have a 'favorite' of any type... trying to go the other way, however, I don't know what I'm doing, and can't find any examples for. I'll start off with the favorite model: favorite/models.py from django.db import models from django.contrib.contenttypes.models import ContentType from django.contrib.contenttypes import generic from django.contrib.auth.models import User class Favorite(models.Model): content_type = models.ForeignKey(ContentType) object_id = models.PositiveIntegerField() user = models.ForeignKey(User) content_object = generic.GenericForeignKey() class Admin: list_display = ('key', 'id', 'user') class Meta: unique_together = ("content_type", "object_id", "user") Now, that allows me to loop through the favorites (on a user's "favorites" page, for example) and get the associated blog objects via {{ favorite.content_object.title }}. What I want now, and can't figure out, is what I need to do to the blog model to allow me to have some tether to the favorite (so when it is displayed in a list it can be highlighted, for example). Here is the blog model: blog/models.py from django.db import models from django.db.models import permalink from django.template.defaultfilters import slugify from category.models import Category from section.models import Section from favorite.models import Favorite from django.contrib.auth.models import User from django.contrib.contenttypes.models import ContentType from django.contrib.contenttypes import generic class Blog(models.Model): title = models.CharField(max_length=200, unique=True) slug = models.SlugField(max_length=140, editable=False) author = models.ForeignKey(User) homepage = models.URLField() feed = models.URLField() description = models.TextField() page_views = models.IntegerField(null=True, blank=True, default=0 ) created_on = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add = True) updated_on = models.DateTimeField(auto_now = True) def __unicode__(self): return self.title @models.permalink def get_absolute_url(self): return ('blog.views.show', [str(self.slug)]) def save(self, *args, **kwargs): if not self.slug: slug = slugify(self.title) duplicate_count = Blog.objects.filter(slug__startswith = slug).count() if duplicate_count: slug = slug + str(duplicate_count) self.slug = slug super(Blog, self).save(*args, **kwargs) class Entry(models.Model): blog = models.ForeignKey('Blog') title = models.CharField(max_length=200) slug = models.SlugField(max_length=140, editable=False) description = models.TextField() url = models.URLField(unique=True) image = models.URLField(blank=True, null=True) created_on = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add = True) def __unicode__(self): return self.title def save(self, *args, **kwargs): if not self.slug: slug = slugify(self.title) duplicate_count = Entry.objects.filter(slug__startswith = slug).count() if duplicate_count: slug = slug + str(duplicate_count) self.slug = slug super(Entry, self).save(*args, **kwargs) class Meta: verbose_name = "Entry" verbose_name_plural = "Entries" Any guidance?

  • Windows forms application blocks after station lock

    - by Silviu
We're having a serious issue at work. We've discovered that after the station where the client was running is locked/unlocked the client is blocked. No repaint. So the UI thread is blocked with something. Looking at the callstack of the UI thread (thread 0) using windbg we see that a UserPreferenceChanged event gets raised. It is marshalled through a WindowsFormsSynchronizationContext using it's controlToSend field to the UI. It gets blocked by a call to the marshalling control. The method called is MarshaledInvoke it builds a ThreadMethodEntry entry = new ThreadMethodEntry(caller, method, args, synchronous, executionContext); This entry is supposed to do the magic. The call is a synchronous call and because of that (still in the MarshaledInvoke of the Control class) the wait call is reached: if (!entry.IsCompleted) { this.WaitForWaitHandle(entry.AsyncWaitHandle); } The last thing that i can see on the stack is the WaitOne called on the previously mentioned AsyncWaitHandle. This is very annoying because having just the callstack of the runtime and not one of our methods being invoked we cannot really point to a bug in our code. I might be wrong, but I'm guessing that the marshaling control is not "marshaling" to the ui thread. But another one...i don't really know which one because the other threads are being used by us and are blocked...maybe this is the issue. But none of the other threads are running a message loop. This is very annoying. We had some issues in the past with marshaling controls to the right ui thread. That is because the first form that is constructed is a splash form. Which is not the main form. We used to use the main form to marshal call to the ui thread. But from time to time some calls would go to a non ui thread and some grids would broke with a big red X on them. I fixed this by creating a specific class: public class WindowsFormsSynchronizer { private static readonly WindowsFormsSynchronizationContext = new WindowsFormsSynchronizationContext(); //Methods are following that would build the same interface of the synchronization context. } This class gets build as one of the first objects in the first form being constructed. We've noticed some other strange thing. Looking at the heap there are 7 WindowsFormsSynchronizationContext objects. 6 of these have the same instance of controlToSend, and the other one has some different instance of controlToSend. This last one is the one that should marshal the calls to the UI. I don't have any other idea...maybe some of you guys had this same issue?

  • Magento loadByAttribute for Custom Category Attributes

    - by Chris
I have created custom attributes for a category in my module's install script like so: $attrib = array( 'type' => 'varchar', 'group' => 'My Data', 'backend' => '', 'frontend' => '', 'label' => 'My Custom Field', 'input' => 'text', 'class' => '', 'source' => '', 'global' => Mage_Catalog_Model_Resource_Eav_Attribute::SCOPE_STORE, 'visible' => true, 'required' => false, 'user_defined' => false, 'default' => '', 'searchable' => false, 'filterable' => false, 'comparable' => false, 'visible_on_front' => false, 'unique' => true, ); $installer->addAttribute(3, 'custom_field', $attrib); The field shows up fine in the admin, and when I create the category in my script like so: $p_category = Mage::getModel('catalog/category') ->setStoreId(0) ->load(2); $category = Mage::getModel('catalog/category'); $category->setStoreId(0) ->setName('Test Category') ->setCustomField('abcd') ->setDisplayMode('PRODUCTS') ->setAttributeSetId($category->getDefaultAttributeSetId()) ->setIsActive(1) ->setIsAnchor(1) ->setPath(implode('/',$p_category->getPathIds())) ->setInitialSetupFlag(true) ->save(); I can see the value 'abcd' in the Magneto admin interface. But when I call the code below: <?php $category = Mage::getModel('catalog/category')->loadByAttribute('custom_field', 'abcd'); print_r($category); ?> I get no result. But if I loadByAttribute using the 'name' field set to 'Test Category', I DO get a result. So, in the database, I looked into the catalog_category_entity_varchar table and noticed that the 'name' attribute had an entry for both store_id = 0 AND store_id = 1 whereas the 'custom_field' attribute had only an entry for store_id = 1. When I added a store_id = 0 entry for 'custom_field' with the value set to 'abcd' in the catalog_category_entity_varchar table, loadByAttribute got the expected result. My question is, why is the 'name' field getting a store_id = 0 entry in catalog_category_entity_varchar and my custom field is not? How do I load categories by custom attributes?

Here's my code: import java.io.*; import java.util.Enumeration; import java.util.zip.*; import javax.swing.ImageIcon; public class Test { public static void main( String[] args ) { if( args.length == 0 ) { System.out.println("usage: java Test.java file.zip"); return; } File archive = new File( args[0] ); if( !archive.exists() || !archive.canRead() ) { System.err.printf("Unable to find/access %s.\n", archive); return; } try { ZipFile zip = new ZipFile(archive); Enumeration <? extends ZipEntry>e = zip.entries(); while( e.hasMoreElements() ) { ZipEntry entry = (ZipEntry) e.nextElement(); int size = (int) entry.getSize(); int count = (size % 1024 == 0) ? size / 1024 : (size / 1024)+1; int offset = 0; int nread, toRead; byte[] buffer = new byte[size]; for( int i = 0; i < count; i++ ) { offset = 1024*i; toRead = (size-offset > 1024) ? 1024 : size-offset; nread = zip.getInputStream(entry).read(buffer, offset, toRead); } ImageIcon icon = new ImageIcon(buffer); // boom -- why? } zip.close(); } catch( IOException ex ) { System.err.println(ex.getMessage()); } } } The sizes reported by entry.getSize() match the uncompressed size of the PNG files, and I am able to read the data out of the archive without any exceptions, but the creation of the ImageIcon blows up. The stacktrace: sun.awt.image.PNGImageDecoder$PNGException: crc corruption at sun.awt.image.PNGImageDecoder.getChunk(PNGImageDecoder.java:699) at sun.awt.image.PNGImageDecoder.getData(PNGImageDecoder.java:707) at sun.awt.image.PNGImageDecoder.produceImage(PNGImageDecoder.java:234) at sun.awt.image.InputStreamImageSource.doFetch(InputStreamImageSource.java:246) at sun.awt.image.ImageFetcher.fetchloop(ImageFetcher.java:172) at sun.awt.image.ImageFetcher.run(ImageFetcher.java:136) sun.awt.image.PNGImageDecoder$PNGException: crc corruption at sun.awt.image.PNGImageDecoder.getChunk(PNGImageDecoder.java:699) at sun.awt.image.PNGImageDecoder.getData(PNGImageDecoder.java:707) at sun.awt.image.PNGImageDecoder.produceImage(PNGImageDecoder.java:234) at sun.awt.image.InputStreamImageSource.doFetch(InputStreamImageSource.java:246) at sun.awt.image.ImageFetcher.fetchloop(ImageFetcher.java:172) at sun.awt.image.ImageFetcher.run(ImageFetcher.java:136) Can anyone shed some light on it? Google hasn't turned up any useful information.
