• Any problems with using a 301 redirect to force https traffic in IIS?

  Is there any problem with using a 301 redirect to force all traffic to go to a secure-only site? We originally had redirect rules, but enforcing SSL-only seemed more secure. Here is how we set it up: Site 1: https://example.com/ Require SSL set Bound to 443 only Site 2: http://example.com Bound to 80 only Empty folder - no actual html or other data 301 Redirects to https://example.com This seems to work beautifully, but are there any issues with doing this? Would any browsers not recognize the 301 redirect, or could there be security warnings during the redirect?

• How can I troubleshoot SSD disconnection problems on Windows 7?

  I have a small SSD (Transcend StoreJet TS256GESD200K) which I am using on several computers. The drive is formatted with NTFS and recently I started noticing disconnects. Normally one probably wouldn't notice (you don't even get the notification sound in Windows when it disconnects), but since I use USBDLM and run a VM from that SSD, I get to see this first-hand. How could I best figure out whether the problem is the hardware (SSD, USB socket, USB cable or something in the PC) or software? In short: how can I locate the source of the disruption so that I can work on removing the problem? Side-note: SMART status for the SSD is clean.

Presumably, this triggers the termination of the other services and Trunk is actually doing its job.So, coould this just be a timing issue and we need to increase the tolerance level (i.e restart count) or do we need to address the 0xa08990002 error in vmd?

• How do you splice out a part of an xvid encoded avi file, with ffmpeg? (no problems with other files)

  Im using the following command, which works for most files, except what seems to be xvid encoded ones /usr/bin/ffmpeg -sameq -i file.avi -ss 00:01:00 -t 00:00:30 -ac 2 -r 25 -copyts output.avi So this should basically splice out 30 seconds of video + audio, starting from 1 minute mark. It does START encoding at the 00:01:00 mark but it goes all the way to the end of the file for some reason, ignoring that I want just 30 seconds. The output looks like this. I'm not a system admin just a developer trying to work my way around a strange problem. I have an iis server running php(not my choice) and every once in a while the application will not allow anyone to log in and then a little while later it just starts working again. I look in the event viewer and don't see anything and the iis logs are no help either. I read somewhere about someone using the the toolkit to diagnose there problem. I just need a little guidance on how to use this tool. Thanks.

• Tables in the SQL Server "master" database, will they cause problems?

  Folks, please be kind on me... I'm just an 'accidental' DBA due to our DBA resigned, so I'm totally a newbie in DBA... You see, I have this application, "ESET Remote Administration Server" (ERAS) that stores its logs and analysis on (originally) a local Access database. The decision was to migrate its database to a SQL Server 2008 R2 machine. ESET (the maker of the software) helpfully provided tools to perform such migration; unfortunately, being the DBA neophyte that I am, I didn't realize that I have to first create my own database (on the SQL Server side) and assign that database as the 'default' database for ERAS' ODBC connection. Now, the migration tool had successfully created a whole bunch of tables inside the "master" database. My questions: Should I leave things be as it is, or should I re-migrate the ERAS database to a different database? If you suggest me perform a re-migration, my plan is to (1) create a new instance, (2) create a new database within the new instance, (3) create a new ODBC System DSN on the ERAS server pointing to the new DB in step 2, (4) use ESET's migration tool to migrate from the current DSN to the new DSN. Do you think I missed a step there? Thanks beforehand for any guidance.

• Windows 7 on 1st Gen MacbookPro Unibody (Q4-2008) - power problems.

  I have the first generation macbook pro, purchased Q4 2008. I've been trying to run Windows 7 and can get it all installed great with the BootCamp 3.1 64 bit drivers however ... power management isn't great. The screen and keyboard don't automatically dim - the laptop gets too hot. I noticed on some newer macbook pros that windows 7 works perfectly and the above doesn't happen. Does anyone know if there really is a hardware issue with this 1st gen or is there some firmware update I can use to fix this? Thanks!

Please note, I am interested only in the security aspect, not scaling / fault tolerance / performance / etc. In my mind if the web server has been compromised using an attack over port 80/443, then the same attack would work over port 80/443 to the Web Service DAL box.

• How do you explain ethernet cable problems to non networking people?

  We've recently been doing a large network migration in our datacenter. We've had a few cables in this start to deliver really bad pings (in excess of 500ms on a LAN) before they could be replaced. The cables we were replacing weren't made the best. They where all hand made and the runs were so short on some of them that the bend radius was definitely too tight. Some of them ran in bundles right in front of the heat exhaust of the power supplies. The cables were running ok until we started pulling the ones surrounding them out. Then a few started having the problem I mentioned above degrading performance and causing reliability issues. I'm trying to figure out the best way to explain this to non networking people. Is there any documentation that people could recommend or other methods?

• Can a non-redundant RAID5 cause any serious problems (compared to RAID0)?

  I used to have a three-disc RAID5 (mdadm) in my computer for personal media storage (music, videos, photos, programs, games, ...). It had three discs with 750 GB each, resulting in an array capacity of 1.5 TB. One day (one year ago), I needed one of those discs to install another operating system. I thought, I don't need the redundancy anymore since I backup the most important stuff (personal photos e.g.) on an external disc anyway. So I decided to remove one of the three discs without converting the RAID to RAID0 or even two separate discs, because I had no temporary storage (since one cannot simply convert the RAID5 to RAID0 AFAIK). So now, for about one year, I have a non-redundant RAID5 with 2 of 3 discs running. Sometimes, one of the discs has a defective contact at the power cable or something similar causing the drive to stop working temporarily (I don't know exactly what it is). Since it still works when rebooting the computer and in most cases by calling some mdadm commands, it wasn't that problematic. Note that the data is not very critical, since I still have a backup of the most important stuff. But in the last few weeks, one of the drives fails very frequently (every few hours), so it gets really annoying to manage this. My questions are: Is there any disadvantage (apart from the annoying management) of a non-redundant RAID5 (with one drive less than typical) over a RAID0? If I understand it correctly, both have no redundancy and the same capacity. On a temporary drive failure, I can restart the array in both cases, assuming that the drive itself still works after the failure. Can it happen that the drive contents alter on a drive failure, making the array inconsistent? If so, can I tell mdadm to check the array for failures (without a file system level checking tool)? Since the drive most probably only has a defective contact causing it to fail for a second only, can I tell mdadm to automatically restart the array, so I will not even notice the failure if no application wanted to access the file system during the failure?

• USB 3.0 ports backwards compatibility problems with 2.0 devices?

  I see some info on the net that suggest that I should be able to get my USB 2.0 devices to work in 3.0 ports. I only have two 2.0 ports on my new computer, and six 3.0 ports. I have installed drives. There's two different drivers, I guess some of the ports are supported by the intel board and some supported by some other chipset on the motherboard. I however have yet to get any of the 3.0 ports to work, and my brother had had the same issue with his devices not working in 3.0 ports on his computer. So I am beginning to wonder if the backwards compatibility isn't reliable for some reason. Maybe manufacturers opting not to implement 2.0 support on the 3.0 ports. I understand that physically the wiring is there, but that is only half the story. Beyond my brother's and my own computers (different motherboards/everything), I have yet to see a 2.0 device work in a 3.0 port. Is there any reason for this apparent device incompatibility? I.e. looking for responses that would indicate what areas to explore for issues or if there is any known cases of manufacturers deviating from spec in hardware or drivers. I am aware it's "supposed" to work :) Update: Does this have any relation to "USB Legacy Support" options in the BIOS? There several options combinations of options with "USB Legacy Support" and "USB 3.0 Legacy Support" and the description for these is a bit confusing, sounds like a bad translation.

• Performance problems - Jira running on Ubuntu over VMware ESX 4.0 maxing out all 4 vCPUs.

  We are running Jira on a box under VMware ESX 4.0 and performance is vaiable to say the least. The physical box has 12 Gig RAM and 4x Xeon 2.26 GHz CPUs. vCentre is telling us the CPUs are not maxed out at any time, RAM is fine too. When we issue a request to the host it sometimes maxes out all 4 vCPUs. Sometimes it's quick, sometimes very very slow. There doesn't seem to be a pattern. Any ideas?

• Received a RAMPAGE IV FORMULA MOBO. Possible CPU Socket problems

  I recently received a Rampage IV Formula MOBO in a trade. From everything I read online this seems like a pretty nice piece of hardware. There's one thing I'm worried about though. It appears as though the socket where the CPU goes might have some bent/missing pins. I'm not exactly a computer expert and I wanted to know if this could be any sort of problem. I would post a picture but I apparently don't have enough rep for that... Also, if I did want to move my current rig onto the new MOBO would it even be worth it?   I'm using ESET Smart Security 4 on Windows 7. I selected Interactive Mode so it asks me when something needs to connect to my PC. So when I was installing a game named League of Legends, I was away from my computer. When I came back, I saw that the download was finished but ESET was asking whether to allow .NET Runtime Optimization Service to connect my computer using port 80 TCP. So I selected Allow but It was too late because the download was already finished. I can play the game, but could it be bugged or broken or something?

• Project Euler considered harmful

  Hi, I've done some Project Euler problems and I was able to solve them very fast because I already knew all the theory behind them. I learned that "accidentaly" because I also had to learn it for university. I used to also solve olympiad problems, I wasn't very good but I was solving some of the problems. I've reached the conclusion that Project Euler problems are taken out of their context(and olympiad problems as well). That's why they are hard. Mathematics and it's theory is taught in order to make the problems easy. However, Project Euler apparently makes an invitation at making them hard again. Why ? I honestly think this is a complete waste of time. Mathematicians had centuries at their disposal in order to solve math problems and they developed theories to explain properly why certain things happen. I think olympiad problems and Project Euler problems are really useless. What's your take on Project Euler ? Do you get something out of it or do you just find formulas on some websites and implement the code fast and then get the result and solve the problem ?

• Entity Framework - Merging 2 physical tables into one "virtual" table problems...

  I have been reading up on porting ASP.NET Membership Provider into .NET 3.5 using LINQ & Entities. However, the DB model that every single sample shows is the newer model while I've inherited a rather old model. Differences: The User Table is split into a pair of User & Membership Tables. All of the tables in the DB are prepended with aspnet_ I have Lowered versions of some columns (UserName, Email, etc) To work with this I have copied the properties from the Membership table into the User table (in the DB this is a 1<-1 relationship, not a 1<-0,1), renamed aspnet_Applications to Application, aspnet_Profiles to Profile, aspnet_Users to User and aspnet_Roles to Role. (See image) Link to full size image of model Now, I am running into one of 2 problems when I try to compile. Using the model in the image I get this error: Problem in Mapping Fragment starting at line 464: EntitySets 'UserSet' and 'aspnet_Membership' are both mapped to table 'aspnet_Membership'. Their Primary Keys may collide. If I delete the aspnet_Membership table from my model (to handle the above error) I then get: Problem in Mapping Fragment starting at line 384: Column aspnet_Membership.ApplicationId in table aspnet_Membership must be mapped: It has no default value and is not nullable. My ability to hand edit the backing stores is not the best and I don't want to just hack something in that may break other things. I am looking for suggestions, best practices, etc to handle this. Note: Moving the data tables themselves is not an option as I cannot replace all the logic in the existing apps. I am building this EF Provider for a new App. Over the next 6 months the old app(s) will migrate bit-by-bit to the new structures. One idea would be to wait with the assertion until I get some event notification that my app has been stopped.

• jQuery UI + Gmaps = Problems (for me at least) HELP!!

  Hi there! I started using jQuery as soon as I found out about it, it is very powerfull but I started struggling when I tried to load Gmaps api into the tabs jQuery UI brings. Strangly enough in IE 6,7,8 it works fine, but in Firefox, Safari (I'm using mac but tested it in windows and they both give the same problems) the map doesn't load entirely. When I click on the tab where the map loads in, only part of the map is fully operational, the rest is grey and not clickable. I got one view similar to the photo app overview showing all the thumbnails, from there I push a viewcontroller containing the scroll view (like in photos app) on the stack, like so - (void)buttonPressed:(id)sender { UIButton *btn = (UIButton *)sender; PhotoSetScrollViewController *psc = [[PhotoSetScrollViewController alloc] initWithPhotoArray:photos andID:btn.tag]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:psc animated:YES]; } Problem 1: The view holding the fullscreen scrollview has a height of 480px which seems to be a problem because when poping the viewcontroller by hitting the back button, the view containing the thumbnails (height 436px) moves upward below the navigation bar. And also the Toolbar keeps showing. What could be the problem? Problem 2: How could I switch between my custom navigation bar and the standard black translucent style?

We cannot upload anything to the servers. The design is site based. Our problems are: 1- I want to add small (?) icons for the descriptions of that field. When the user click on the (?) icon for "brief description" field a pop-up or another window will be opened and perhaps it will say: Enter a description of the requested thing. Be as specific as possible. 2- I want to change the font colors of the fields in the form. The share point brings them black as default. Such as I want to see the "Brief description:" and "Status:" as purple instead of black. Brief description: ..... Status: ..... 3- I want to add an agreement pop-up to the new form which will be open just after clicking "send" button in the form. The pop up will say: "Are you sure that you read the procedure" . The user has to click "Yes" to continue sending the form. Otherwise It will return to previous screen again. I would be glad if you kindly help me.
