In terms that an OOP programmer would understand (without any functional programming background), what is a monad?
What problem does it solve and what are the most common places it's used?
Hi,
When you develop a Java application that talks to oracle DBs, there are 2 options right? One is oracle thin driver, and the other is OCI driver that requires its own installation (please correct if I'm misunderstanding).
Now, what are the pros and cons? Obviously thin driver sounds much better in terms of installation, but is there anything that OCI can and the thin one can't?
Develop environment is Tomcat6 + Spring 3.0 + JPA(Hibernate) + appache-DBCP
Thanks in advance.
I'm interested in finding out how the recently-released (http://mirror.facebook.com/facebook/hive/hadoop-0.17/) Hive compares to HBase in terms of performance. The SQL-like interface used by Hive is very much preferable to the HBase API we have implemented.
Hi All,
I am unable to understand the purpose of JAF(java activation Framework). Please explain me in simple terms or else where can i find simple material to learn.
In Java Mail API, they are using JAF. I read, it was like finding the supporting data types of an object. But i couldn't understand.
Please teach me!!
I am reading the Asp.net security documentation on msdn.I come across these tow terms and get really confused.
# WindowsIdentity = WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent()
which returns the identity of the security context of the currently executing Win32 thread.
# Thread = Thread.CurrentPrincipal
which returns the principal of the currently executing .NET thread which rides on top of the Win32 thread.
Please explain me in simple terms (if possible simple example) the covariance and contravariance in c# .net .
I know many are available(even in stackoverflow) but my problem is in which scenario I should use that is not explained in the articles that I am refering to.
e.g.
Covariance and Contravariance in Delegates (C# Programming Guide)
Thanks
We need a powerful datagrid for financial applications to replace existing winforms datagrids. Has anyone tried any 3rd party WPF datagrids recently?
We tested a number of WPF grids over a year ago, but at the time they weren't up to standards when compared to their winforms counterparts (in terms of functionality).
Please do not reply with:
WPF Toolkit
ListView
You don't need datagrids
I often hear the terms 'statically linked' and 'dynamically linked', often in reference to code written in C(++|#) but I don't know much of anything about either, what are they, what exactly are they talking about, and what are they linking?
Is mysql_real_escape_string sufficient for cleaning user input in most situations?
::EDIT::
I'm thinking mostly in terms of preventing SQL injection but I ultimately want to know if I can trust user data after I apply mysql_real_escape_string or if I should take extra measures to clean the data before I pass it around the application and databases.
I see where cleaning for HTML chars is important but I wouldn't consider it necessary for trusting user input.

Looking to integrate a web application with MYOB. There's not much in terms of documentation out there. I've found a couple of companies that provide middleware, but nothing promising. Just thought I'd see if anyone else out there has had experience with this and might be able to save me a bit of time.
Cheers
This post is about 2 questions in one:
Good books for Boost C++ library
OO Design in C++. I come from Java background and tend to think in terms of Interfaces, Singletons etc. How do I translate it to C++ or how to start thinking differently for C++

I am trying to design a Blackberry Application and I am wondering if there are any resources on how to create custom user interface elements, skin existing ones and what other possibilities are there?
I have developed a few iPhone applications with custom UI and stuff, so not sure what BB world offers in terms of UI development.
Any tips, suggestions or ideas would be great.
Hi,
Say I am creating a forums application, I understand how to design a forum level permission system with Groups.
i.e. you create a forum to group mapping, and assign users to a group to give them access to a particular forum.
How can I refine the permissions to allow for row level permissions (or in forum terms, post level).
I would love to use google document viewer, but I am dealing with sensitive documents and google's Terms state that if you use their service the document basically becomes public domain.
Are they any alternatives that will keep your content private?
FYI: I am developing with ruby on rails, it would be cool if there was a gem.
i need to create a function in my application to set its available memory usage. What i want to do is when the application is running, and it reaches to the set memory settings, i'll have to switch from saving to the memory to saving to a file to the local drive to avoid application hang. Is this a better way to do? What things to consider when doing this in terms of memory allocation? Hope you understand :)
Thanks,
Jepe
In Java, what's generally the most accepted way to organize a class in terms of the order in which declared data members and methods should be listed in the class file, keeping in mind the following and anything else you can think of for each one:
its visibility
whether it's a constructor, method, or member
if it's a method, does it overload, or override other method(s)?
I came across the following http://ckeditor.com/demo , and was wondering if anyone had a basic tutorial how to implement this (or perhaps what key search terms I should use)?
Is this just a heavily modified TextField, or have they somehow managed to create a completely new TextField from scratch?
I tried googling this many times, and I always get pages relating to customizing the built-in TextField with CSS etc.
This question is linked with the answers in the following question:
Error removing Bitmaps[Android]
Is there any advantage of using Drawable over Bitmap in Android in terms of memory de-allocation ?
I was looking at Romain Guy project Shelves and he uses SoftReference for images caches but I'm unable to search where is the code which is de-allocating these Drawables when SoftReference automatically reclaims the memory for Bitmap. As far as I know .recycle() has to be explicitly called on the Bitmap for it to be de-allocated.
Hi, I'm just wondering if it's possible to retrieve the the most entered entries from the mysql database
It's like this :
ID - Value
Id is auto increment, and value is the text that is being entered, i'd like to have it display the top 10 most entered terms, how could i do that?
I have an iPhone application where i need to find out the current location(in terms of city name or probably the address). But i'm not been able to do that. I can find out the current latitude and longitude. Is there any web service(preferably free of cost) which can return me the current location name if i supply the latitude and longitude?
Waiting For any reply.
Thanks in advance..

Hi,
I'm attempting to find the euclidean distance in meters between two points on an MKMapView using iPhone OS 3.2. The problem is that I have these coordinates in terms of latitude and longitude, which, mathematically provides me enough data to find the distance, but it's going to take some tricky trigonometry. Is there any simpler solution?
Thanks!
Hi,
Does anyone know of a good way to have a user enter an amount of time (hours and minutes) using visual studio controls? At the moment i have two numeric up downs, one for time and one for minutes that i then parse to create a timespan. The only other idea i have is a text box that a user can enter a "00:00" time in, and validate the input. Both of these ways seem a bit bad (in UI terms) though.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Hi! I have huge database (kinda wordnet).
And want to know if it's easier to use Cassandra instead of MySQL|PostrgreSQL
All my life I was using MySQL and PostrgreSQL and I could easily think in terms of relational algebra, but several weeks ago I learned about cassandra and that it's used in facebook and twitter.
Is it more convenient?
What DBMS are usually used nowadays to store social net's data, relationships between objects, wordnet?
If I do
double d = 34.56;
int i = (int)d;
Am I not "downcasting"?
OR
Is this term only used in terms of classes and objects?
I am confused because in this case we are "downcasting" from a bigger double to a smaller int, but in case of classes, we "downcast" from a smaller base class to a bigger derived class.
Aren't these two conventions, in some sense, opposite?
I'm seeking any implemented algorithm or even a service that I can provide it with a link and it provide back a measurement or a rank for that link in terms of popularity or hotness.
