• What are the best open-source software non-profits for making financial contributions and/or facilitating useful work?

  I'm not a great programmer myself (my main job is more electrical engineering) and have never really helped out with any open source projects, but I've benefited greatly from free and/or open-source software (MySQL, OpenOffice, Firefox, Apache, PHP, Java, etc.) and at some point would like to make some modest financial contributions to help keep this stuff going. I'm wondering, what are the best non-profits to make financial contributions? I'm aware of: Open Source Initiative (founded 10 years ago by several prominent figures including programmer and "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" author Eric S. Raymond) Free Software Foundation Mozilla Foundation Apache Foundation Anyone have a particular favorite? Ideally I'd like to give money to a non-profit that would foster some of the smaller but promising open-source and/or free software projects. The big projects like Firefox and Apache are already well-established. There are a few small individual shareware programs I've already paid for directly. But it's those middle-ground projects that I would really like my contributions to support. (one that comes to mind is a good GUI for Subversion or Mercurial.) It's one thing for a single person to donate a little $$ to a small project. It's another for a foundation or something to give larger grants to projects that give a good bang for the buck. Conservation organizations like The Nature Conservancy, or the Trust for Public Lands, have really honed this approach, but I'm not really sure if there's an equivalent model in software-land.

• Why calling Process.killProcess(Process.myPid()) is a bad idea?

  I've read some posts saying using this method is "not good", shouldn't been use, it's not the right way to "close" the application and it's not how android works... I understand and accept the fact that Android OS knows better then me when it's the right time to terminate the process, but I didn't heard yet a good explanation why it's wrong using the killProcess() method?. after all - it's part of the android API... what I do know is that calling this method while other threads doing in potential an important work (operations on files, writing to DB, HTTP requests, running services..) can be terminated in the middle, and it's clearly not good. also I know I can benefit from the fact that "re-open" the application will be faster, cause the system maybe still "holds" in memory state from last time been used, and killProcess() prevents that. beside this reason, in assumption I don't have such operations, and I don't care my application will load from scratch each run, there are other reasons why not using the killProcess() method? I know about finish() method to close an Activity, so don't write me about that please.. finish() is only for Activity. not to all application, and I think I know exactly why and when to use it... and another thing - I'm developing also games with the Unity3D framework, and exporting the project to android. when I decompiled the generated apk, I was very suprised to find out that the java source code created from unity - implementing Unity's - Application.quit() method, with Process.killProcess(Process.myPid()). Application.quit() is suppose to be the right way to close game according to Unity3d guides (is it really?? maybe I'm wrong, and missed something), so how it happens that the Unity's framework developers which doing a very good work as it seems implemented this in native android to killProcess()? anyway - I wish to have a "list of reasons" why not using the killProcess() method, so please write down your answer - if you have something interesting to say about that. • PHP set timeout for script with system call, set_time_limit not working

  I have a command-line PHP script that runs a wget request using each member of an array with foreach. This wget request can sometimes take a long time so I want to be able to set a timeout for killing the script if it goes past 15 seconds for example. I have PHP safemode disabled and tried set_time_limit(15) early in the script, however it continues indefinitely. Update: Thanks to Dor for pointing out this is because set_time_limit() does not respect system() calls. So I was trying to find other ways to kill the script after 15 seconds of execution. However, I'm not sure if it's possible to check the time a script has been running while it's in the middle of a wget request at the same time (a do while loop did not work). Maybe fork a process with a timer and set it to kill the parent after a set amount of time? Thanks for any tips! • Touch coordinates in iPhone landscape mode app

  I am trying to make this landscape only iphone app. I only use this code for this purpose: - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight); } However when I click clip subviews checkbox from interface builder, the view is clipped from the middle. I also don't receive any touch events from outside of view bounds obviously. - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { CGPoint fingerPos = [[touches anyObject] locationInView:self.view]; NSLog(@"%f %f",fingerPos.x,fingerPos.y); } only prints for coordinates between 20 and 320 for X. But Y works fine. When i try to modify bounds by hand, everything works fine; View is positioned and shown correctly, printed coordinates are correct, I receive touch from all of the screen except between 0 and 20 for X. So Left side of the screen is unresponsive to touch events for only 20 pixels. Code I use to modify bounds: self.view.bounds = CGRectMake(-180.0f, 0.0f, 680.0f, 480.0f); What might be causing this? • UIScrollView notifications

  Hi, I'm coding an app that works much like Apple's Weather.app: There's a UIPageControl at the bottom and a UIScrollView in the middle of the screen. In my code, I implemented the - (void)scrollViewDidEndDecelerating:(UIScrollView *)scrollView method to figure out when the user did move to a new page. If they move to a new page, I load the adjacent pages' data, as to make further page-switching faster. (In one of Apple's examples, the - (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)sender is used, but that causes my app to shortly hang when loading a new page, so it's not suitable.) That code works very well. I'm using scrollRectToVisible:: to programmatically scroll inside the scrollview when the user clicks the UIPageControl. The problem is that the scrollRectToVisible: doesn't post a notification to the UIScrollViewDelegate when it's done scrolling - so the code responsible for loading adjacent pages never get's called when using the UIPageControl. Is there any way to make the UIScrollView notify its delegate when it gets called by the scrollRectToVisible: method? Or will I have to use threads in order to prevent my app from freezing?   I was wondering, in java, is it possible to in anyway, simulate pass by reference for an array? Yes, I know the language doesn't support it, but is there anyway I can do it. Say, for example, I want to create a method that reverses the order of all the elements in an array. (I know that this code snippet isn't the best example, as there is a better algorithms to do this, but this is a good example of the type of thing I want to do for more complex problems).   I know that memory alloced using new, gets its space in heap, and so we need to delete it before program ends, to avoid memory leak. Let's look at this program... Case 1: char *MyData = new char[20]; _tcscpy(MyData,"Value"); . . . delete[] MyData; MyData = NULL; Case 2: char *MyData = new char[20]; MyData = "Value"; . . . delete[] MyData; MyData = NULL; In case 2, instead of allocating value to the heap memory, it is pointing to a string literal. Now when we do a delete it would crash, AS EXPECTED, since it is not trying to delete a heap memory. Is there a way to know where the pointer is pointing to heap or stack? By this the programmer Will not try to delete any stack memory He can investigate why does this ponter, that was pointing to a heap memory initially, is made to refer local literals? What happened to the heap memory in the middle? Is it being made to point by another pointer and delete elsewhere and all that?

• CSS sliding-door buttons center alignment

  Hi guys, I need help to align CSS buttons. I tried many different variations and I just cannot center my button the way I want. Firstly, have a look at this url: http://www.front-end-developer.net/cssbuttons/example.htm I'm using 2 images to form a button (this could be done on 1 image, but in this case we've got two). Everything works as expected as long as we apply float:left or float:right to the parent div element, to 'limit' width of the div and close it as soon as the content of the div ends. You can remove float:left from the button to see what I mean. But what about center positioned buttons? I cannot add float:left/right because I want align it in the middle. In theory, I could set { width:XXpx; margin:0 auto; } And I will get what you can see on this picture: But I don't know the length of the text inside. Having different translations my button can be very short, or 5 times that long. I also tried to use <span> instead of <div>, but unfortunately nested inline elements don't respect their padding correctly... And yes, I must use <a> inside, so buttons can be accessed by web crawlers. I'm really stuck on this one.

• Cooperative/Non-preemptive threading avoiding threadlooks?

  Any creative ideas to avoid deadlocks on a yield or sleep with cooperative/non-preemptive multitasking without doing an O/S Thread.Sleep(10)? Typically the yield or sleep call will call back into the scheduler to run other tasks. But this can sometime produce deadlocks. Some background: This application has enormous need for speed and, so far, it's extremely fast as compared to other systems in the same industry. One of the speed techniques is cooperative/non-preemptive threading rather then the cost of a context switch from O/S threads. The high level design a priority manager which calls out to tasks depending on priority and processing time. Each task does one "iteration" of work and returns to wait its turn again in the priority queue. The tricky thing with non-preemptive threading is what to do when you want to a particular task to stop in the middle of work and wait for some other event from a different task before continuing. In this case, we have 3 tasks, A B and C where A is a controller that must synchronize the activity of B and C. First, A starts both B and C. Then B yields so C gets invoked. When C yields, A sees they are both inactive, decides it's time for B to run but not time for C yet. Well B is now stuck in a yield that has called C, so it can never run. Sincerely, Wayne

• Django 404 page not showing up

  Hey all, I'm in the middle of putting up my first django application on shared hosting. This should be an easy thing, but I am just not seeing it. I tried to follow the directions of the django documentation, and created a 404.html page within my template folder. I just wrote "This is a 404 page." in the .html file. I also did the same thing for a 500.html page and wrote in it "This is a 500 page." However when I hit a 'bad page' I get a standard 404 page from the browser (Oops! This link appears to be broken. in Chrome) when I would expect "This is a 404 page." What's even more interesting is out of frustration I wrote {% asdfjasdf %} in the 404.html, and instead of getting the "Oops!..." error I get "This is a 500 page," so it definitely sees the 404.html template. Here's what I can confirm: Debug = False I am running apache on a shared hosting I have not done anything special with .htaccess and 404 errors. If I run with Debug = True, it says it's a 404 error. I am using FastCGI Anything else anyone think I could try? Thank you very much!

  I can't believe I'm back to this after working with WPF for 3 months :) Consider very common setup: How do I configure the rowheights so that the top and bottom rows (menu bar and status bar) size to fit the height of their content, and the middle row (main content), fills the remaining available space in the program? • Force Oracle error on fetch

  I am trying to debug a strange behavior in my application. In order to do so, I need to reproduce a scenario where an SQL SELECT query will throw an error, but only while actually fetching from the cursor, not while executing the query itself. Can this be done? Any error will do, but ORA-01722: invalid number seems like the obvious one to try. I created a table with the follwing: KEYCOL INTEGER PRIMARY KEY OTHERCOL VARCHAR2(100) I then created a few hundred rows with unique values for the primary key and the value l for the othercol. I then ran a SELECT * query, picked a row somewhere in the middle, and updated it to the string abcd. I ran the query SELECT KEYCOL, TO_NUMBER(OTHERCOL) FROM SOMETABLE hoping to get some rows of good data an then an error later. But I keep getting ORA-01722: invalid number on the execute step itself. I have gotten this behavior programmatically using ADO (with server-side cursor) and JDBC, as well as from PL/SQL Developer. How can I get the result I'm looking for? thanks Edit - meant to add, when using ADO, I am only calling Command.Execute. I am not creating or opening a Recordset.

• Speed of CSS

  This is just a question to help me understand CSS rendering better. Lets say we have a million lines of this. <div class="first"> <div class="second"> <span class="third">Hello World</span> </div> </div> Which would be the fastest way to change the font of Hello World to red? .third { color: red; } div.third { color: red; } div.second div.third { color: red; } div.first div.second div.third { color: red; } Also, what if there was at tag in the middle that had a unique id of "foo". Which one of the CSS methods above would be the fastest. I know why these methods are used etc, im just trying to grasp better the rendering technique of the browsers and i have no idea how to make a test that times it. UPDATE: Nice answer Gumbo. From the looks of it then it would be quicker in a regular site to do the full definition of a tag. Since it finds the parents and narrows the search for every parent found. That could be bad in the sense you'd have a pretty large CSS file though.

• Design: Website calling a webservice on the same machine

  More of a design/conceptual question. At work the decision was made to have our data access layer be called through webservices. So our website would call the webservices for any/all data to and from the database. Both the website & the webservices will be on the same machine(so no trip across the wire), but the database is on a separate machine(so that would require a trip across the wire regardless). This is all in-house, the website, webservice, and database are all within the same company(AFAIK, the webservices won't be reused by another other party). To the best of my knowledge: the website will open a port to the webservices, and the webservices will in turn open another port and go across the wire to the database server to get/submit the data. The trip across the wire can't be avoided, but I'm concerned about the webservices standing in the middle. I do agree there needs to be distinct layers between the functionality(such as business layer, data access layer, etc...), but this seems overly complex to me. I'm also sensing there will be some performance problems down the line. Seems to me it would be better to have the (DAL)assemblies referenced directly within the solution, thus negating the first port to port connection. Any thoughts(or links) both for and against this idea would be appreciated P.S. We're a .NET shop(migrating from vb to C# 3.5)

  I need to parse a file with the following format. 0000000 ...ISBN.. ..Author.. ..Title.. ..Edit.. ..Year.. ..Pub.. ..Comments.. NrtlExt Nrtl Next Navg NQoH UrtlExt Urtl Uext Uavg UQoH ABS NEB MBS FOL ABE0001 0-679-73378-7 ABE WOMAN IN THE DUNES (INT'L ED) 1st 64 RANDOM 0.00 13.90 0.00 10.43 0 21.00 10.50 6.44 3.22 2 2.00 0.50 2.00 2.00 ABS The ID and ISBN are not a problem, the title is. There is no set length for these fields, and there are no solid delimiters- the space can be used for most of the file. Another issue is that there is not always an entry in the comments field. When there is, there are spaced within the content. So I can get the first two, and the last fourteen. I need some help figuring out how to parse the middle six fields. This file was generated by an older program that I cannot change. I am using php to parse this file.

  Hi All I am trying to build a shopping website with ajax. When a user clicks the "add to cart" image. The little loading image will show next to the Add To Cart Image. The first click works fine and the image showed as I expected. However, the second and the following clicks appends more images on the first loading image(2nd:add two loading images, 3rd: add three images..6 total images after 3 clicks). I did use ajaxStop and remove the first image...Not sure what's going on...Could use a help. Thanks a lot. • Registering custom webcontrol inside mvc view?

  I am in the middle of a project where I am migrating some code for a website from WebForms to MVC - unfortunatly there's not enough time to do it all at once, so I will have to do some... not so pretty solutions. I am though facing a problems with a custom control I have written that inherits from the standard GridView control namespace Controls { public class MyGridView : GridView { ... } } I have added to the web.config file as usual: <configuration> ... <system.web> ... <pages> ... <controls> ... <add tagPrefix="Xui" namespace="Controls"/> </controls> </pages> </system.web> </configuration> Then on the MVC View: <Xui:MyGridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" ...>...</Xui:MyGgridView> However I am getting a parser error stating that the control cannot be found. I am suspecting this has to do with the mix up of MVC and WebForms, however I am/was under the impression that such mixup should be possible, is there any kind of tweak for this? I realise this solution is far from ideal, however there's no time to "do the right thing". Thanks

• Small-o(n^2) implementation of Polynomial Multiplication

  I'm having a little trouble with this problem that is listed at the back of my book, i'm currently in the middle of test prep but i can't seem to locate anything regarding this in the book. Anyone got an idea? A real polynomial of degree n is a function of the form f(x)=a(n)x^n+?+a1x+a0, where an,…,a1,a0 are real numbers. In computational situations, such a polynomial is represented by a sequence of its coefficients (a0,a1,…,an). Assuming that any two real numbers can be added/multiplied in O(1) time, design an o(n^2)-time algorithm to compute, given two real polynomials f(x) and g(x) both of degree n, the product h(x)=f(x)g(x). Your algorithm should **not** be based on the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique. Please note it needs to be small-o(n^2), which means it complexity must be sub-quadratic. The obvious solution that i have been finding is indeed the FFT, but of course i can't use that. There is another method that i have found called convolution, where if you take polynomial A to be a signal and polynomial B to be a filter. A passed through B yields a shifted signal that has been "smoothed" by A and the resultant is A*B. This is supposed to work in O(n log n) time. Of course i am completely unsure of implementation. If anyone has any ideas of how to achieve a small-o(n^2) implementation please do share, thanks.

• jQuery ui Accordion degrades in IE6 or IE7, but is working in IE8

  There are two accordions on my page, with custom accordion CSS in another file, differentiated by class and ID names so as not to conflict with each other. The accordions don't show up at all, they just degrade to showing all the content at once, as if all the accordion styling is gone. The accordions are both called around the middle of the page, and there's no difference if they are loaded with $(document).ready. What should I check for in the CSS files? There are no inline-block uses. I am using jQuery 1.3.2.min and jQuery ui 1.7.2, so I'm assuming the autoHeight set to false won't make a difference... This is being used inside a Symfony-based site. Works fine in FF, IE8, Chrome.
