• Cannot exit X server, restart, shutdown or drop to tty when VGA monitor active

  I have a strange problem. If I connect an external VGA monitor to my laptop, exiting the X environment in any way crashes the computer. For example, say I am working with my two monitors (the laptop's and one connected to my VGA port) active. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F Key should take me down to a tty. What actually happens is that the VGA screen goes blank, as you would expect, but the laptop screen, although still on, shows nothing. I know the screen is on because it is slightly more illuminated than when it is off. When in this state, I can do nothing to regain access to the machine. I have tried: Ctrl+F Key (and even Ctrl+Alt+F Key, just in case) combinations and none seem to have any effect. Ctrl+Alt+Del : Nothing Magic SysRq key: Nothing Blindly typing my username and password and trying to reboot/shutdown or restart GDM or MDM: Nothing The only thing that works is a hard reset. The exact same behavior occurs when kiling the X server through Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, rebooting or shutdown. There is no difference if I reboot/shutdown/log out using the WM's graphical menu or if I use the shutdown or rebootcommands. It is also not WM-dependent. I have the same problem using Cinnamon, Gnome 3, MATE and xfce4. It is, however, VGA dependent. I have tried connecting another VGA monitor and have the same problem. I do not, however, have this problem if a screen is connected to the DisplayPort. It is, therefore, a VGA specific issue. To make things even stranger, this only occurs when both screens are active. If either the laptop screen or the VGA monitor is inactive the problem goes away. Finally, this problem arose when I installed the latest Linux Mint Debian (LMDE). It did not occur with the previous release of LMDE. I am not sure what has changed since I used the same kernel version in both releases (I had upgraded the kernel while on the previous release) and, I think, the same nvidia drivers. Oh, and yes, I have updated the nvidia driver. Hardware: Dell M4500 laptop CPU: Intel Core i7 RAM: 8GB Graphics: nVidia GT216 [Quadro FX 880M] Software: LMDE, kernel 3.2.0-2-amd64 Xorg: 1.11.4 nVidia kernel: 295.20-1+3.2.9-1 Possibly relevant files: /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/.xsession-errors Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? • Radeon 5850 Why am I not getting 3 monitors up as a choice ??

  Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

• How do I prevent windows opening on one of my desktops?

  I have 2 monitors and a tv screen connected to my computer. The tv is angled so I can watch it in bed but is facing away from my desk (and usually switched off). Sometimes applications open on the monitor and I have to fiddle around with the "Move" menu option to bring them back to one of the screens I can see. I don't want to disable the tv as I will just have to reenable it when I want to watch something on it, so how can I prevent applications opening on the tv?

• Dual Monitors for Windows 8

  I have one monitor and a projector connecting to my computer, while the screen keep flashing after every 10 seconds, it seems the resolution keeps changing. The project is the a dual display for the monitor. They displays the same content. My current resolution is 1024*768, while after 10 seconds around, the resolution goes to something big, then after a few seconds, it goes back to 1024*768. I wonder if this is a problem about the resolution, or it's about the compatible of screen display?

• Laptop and 2 screens: use screens but not monitor display

  Hi, I have 1 VGA socket on my laptop, and currently have that in use by a large screen. At some point in the future I would like to get another one of these screens and use both screens in dual screen mode but not use my laptop display (to be honest my laptop display is pretty rubbish as its like 2/3s the size of my screen - even if I had the choice to use all 3 I probably wouldn't want to). Is it possible to achieve this? If so, what do I need by way of hardware / software, and how much do you reckon it should cost me? Thanks in advance. Regards, Richard

• Stick floating eclipse windows on second screen with Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks

  When working with eclipse, I'm used to have a floating window with the console and other views on my secondary monitor. Since the update to OSX 10.9 (Mavericks), I still can drag the floating window to the secondary screen, but it keeps popping back to the main monitor when e.g. changing the perspective - which is really annoying. This did not happen with Mac OS 10.8. Is there a way that the floating windows of eclipse stay on the secondary monitor?

  I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 x64 on a Lenovo ThinkPad R500, with an external monitor attached. If I configure extended desktop, everything works fine. The settings look like this: After a reboot, these settings are reset and both screens are mirrored. The settings look like this: I had my extended desktop working just fine under Ubuntu/GNOME, so I'm assuming there's something different about how KDE handles this config, I just can't seem to find the answer. Anyone know how to get my configuration to stick?

  SETUP: multiple SSL domains are configured on a single IP, by using vhosts with different port numbers (on which Apache listens) Apache 2.2.8 on Windows 2003 (no comments on this pls) too many Windows XP users so SNI isn't an option yet There may be reasons why it's wrong to use this approach, but it works for now. vhosts setup: # secure domain 1 <VirtualHost IP:443> SSL stuff specifying certificate etc. ServerName domain1.org </VirtualHost> # secure domain 2 <VirtualHost IP:81> SSL stuff for domain2.org ServerName domain2.org </VirtualHost> GOAL: Some folders inside the domain2.org docroot need to be secure. I used a .htaccess file to rewrite the URL to https on port 81: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^81$ RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}:81%{REQUEST_URI} [R] Suppose I put the .htaccess in the folder 'secfolder'. When accessing http://domain2.org/secfolder this gets succesfully rewritten to https://domain2.org:81/secfolder. ISSUE: When accessing https://domain2.org/secfolder (without port 81), the certificate from the first vhost (domain1.org) is used and the browser complains that the site is insecure because the certificate is not valid for domain2.org. I thought that RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^81$ would also rewrite https://domain2.org to https://domain2.org:81, but it doesn't. It seems that the .htaccess file is not being used at all in this case. At this point I am not sure how to apply a RewriteRule to https://domain2.org. I tried creating an additional vhost for domain2 on port 443 before the one for domain1.org, but Apache seems to choke on that. I hope someone of you has an idea how to approach this. TIA.

• Bad resolution from Displayport converter on third of three screens

  I am currently using three screens at the same time with my ATI 5770 & an active Displayport converter. The thing is that the third screen (the one using the active Displayport converter) is showing terrible resolution compared to my other two screens. The third screen is a Samsung Syncmaster P23. Two of my screens have a max resolution of 1920x1080, meanwhile the third on is only capable of 1600x1200. Do any of you know a solution to this problem?

• Disable laptop's display on boot when used with external display

  I keep my laptop tucked away and solely use an external display with it via HDMI. In Windows 7 display settings, I have it set up to "Show desktop only on 2 [my external display]" This works fine in all cases except when I boot the laptop when the external display is already connected. In that case, the laptop's display stays on and sticks at the Windows 7 boot logo unless I manually shut the display off. (I should mention that while the laptop's display is stuck at the boot logo, the external monitor and computer are running just fine.) The laptop is an Asus N56VZ with Nvidia 650m graphics and the latest drivers. I've checked Nvidia's control panel as well as the BIOS and nothing looked very promising. Any ideas as to how I can get my laptop screen to shut itself off after booting into Windows?

• Use one NIC to create multiple interfaces for Linux KVM

  I am working on a thesis research project, and I am having some difficulty figuring out how to make one NIC spawn several "bridge" interfaces such that each KVM VM can be seen on the local network. I am very new to KVM, and am still exploring what it can do. Below is the scenario that I am attempting to make (on a CentOS/RHEL 6 system): Linux KVM Host has 1 NIC (eth0) connected to a switch. Create multiple "bridge" or equivalent interfaces that are spawned off of eth0 that would provide a unique IP for each VM. This is so that each VM can communicate with other hosts on the network, and that other hosts on the network can communicate with the VM. IMPORTANT: I would like iptables on the KVM host to be able to manipulate/control/restrict the traffic that would be sent on those "bridge" interfaces. I would like to create a minimum of three VM's, each using their own unique "bridge" interfaces. I have previously made a br0 interface off of eth0, but unfortunately, I am unable to add any more to it. It appears that you can only bridge 1 interface to the NIC. I would like to bridge many to one. Would a tap device be able to do this? If so, how would it be set up? Effectively, I am attempting to replicate what can easily be created with VirtualBox on Windows, where each VM is given a "bridged" interface, and can live on the network. I want to achieve this very same thing with Linux KVM.   I will have two Cisco routers at Location A serving the same internal networks, and one router in location B. Currently, I have one router in each location with a IPSec site-to-site tunnel connecting them. The peer that packets are actually sent to is determined by the last peer that the router heard from (received either traffic or a negotiation request from) for a given data flow. If the attempt fails with the first peer, Internet Key Exchange (IKE) tries the next peer on the crypto map list. But I don't fully understand that in the context of a failover scenerio (One of the routers as Location A blowing up).

• force other screen on boot

  I have a multi-boot Windows 7 (32bit & 64 bit) on my HP Notebook. Unfortunately, the Notebook screen has been trashed (due to daughter dropping it). So I have attached a second screen. On the 64 bit system, after windows has started, the logon screen comes up on the 2nd monitor just fine. On the 32 bit system, the logon screen still comes up on the Notebook monitor and I have to open the lid, and shut it so that it then switches to the attached screen. In both cases the display has been set to only display on the attached screen (ie if I "identify" the attached screen says: '1'). Is there any setting I can use to force the OS to use the attached screen? TIA, Paolo

• Running multiple sites on a LAMP with secure isolation

  Hi everybody, I have been administering a few LAMP servers with 2-5 sites on each of them. These are basically owned by the same user/client so there are no security issues except from attacks through vulnerable deamons or scripts. I am builing my own server and would like to start hosting multiple sites. My first concern is... ISOLATION. How can I avoid that a c99 script could deface all the virtual hosts? Also, should I prevent that c99 to be able to write/read the other sites' directories? (It is easy to "cat" a config.php from another site and then get into the mysql database) My server is a VPS with 512M burstable to 1G. Among the free hosting managers, is there any small one which works for my VPS? (which maybe is compatible with the security approach I would like to have) Currently I am not planning to host over 10 sites but I would not accept that a client/hacker could navigate into unwanted directories or, worse, run malicious scripts. FTP management would be fine. I don't want to complicate things with SSH isolation. What is the best practice in this case? Basically, what do hosting companies do to sleep well? :) Thanks very much! • How to calibrate a HDTV that is being used as monitor?

  I have a HDTV I am using as a second monitor. The first monitor, is a real computer monitor, not a TV and has a fantastic image. The second one, the HDTV has a good image, but it is a little bit blurred and has the problem you can see on the picture below, a kind of red halo around the edges. I think it has something to do with red contrast. Other colors show this problem too, specially the green. The problem is that the TV has no contrast adjustment. Instead it has something called IRE 10 points and IRE 2 points. Taking IRE 10 for example, it has 4 controls for each of the 10 points: luminosity, R, G and B. I could not find a page where I can understand what this IRE is and how should I adjust this. Can someone tell me how should I proceed to calibrate this TV for best picture? thanks for any help.

• Shared firewall or multiple client specific firewalls?

  I'm trying to determine if I can use a single firewall for my entire network, including customer servers, or if each customer should have their own firewall. I've found that many hosting companies require each client with a cluster of servers to have their own firewall. If you need a web node and a database node, you also have to get a firewall, and pay another monthly fee for it. I have colo space with several KVM virtualization servers hosting VPS services to many different customers. Each KVM host is running a software iptables firewall that only allows specific ports to be accessed on each VPS. I can control which ports any given VPS has open, allowing a web VPS to be accessed from anywhere on ports 80 and 443, but blocking a database VPS completely to the outside and only allowing a certain other VPS to access it. The configuration works well for my current needs. Note that there is not a hardware firewall protecting the virtualization hosts in place at this time. However, the KVM hosts only have port 22 open, are running nothing except KVM and SSH, and even port 22 cannot be accessed except for inside the netblock. I'm looking at possibly rethinking my network now that I have a client who needs to transition from a single VPS onto two dedicated servers (one web and one DB). A different customer already has a single dedicated server that is not behind any firewall except iptables running on the system. Should I require that each dedicated server customer have their own dedicated firewall? Or can I utilize a single network-wide firewall for multiple customer clusters? I'm familiar with iptables, and am currently thinking I'll use it for any firewalls/routers that I need. But I don't necessarily want to use up 1U of space in my rack for each firewall, nor the power consumption each firewall server will take. So I'm considering a hardware firewall. Any suggestions on what is a good approach?

  I'm so attracted to Acer Revo for the price & the look. As long as I can work on two monitors simultaneously, I'll be happy. Not planning to do heavy video editing or gaming. Occasional movie streaming would be fine. Will mainly use it to do trading, lots of word processing, some photo editing, connecting with friends. Anyone has experience using Revo with 2 or more monitors? The spec says it has VGA and HDMI output but Acer sales person over the phone told me it can support one monitor only..??
