  • A lot of connections to port 6881 - some new attacks or what ?

    Ok so i am the admin of a small network with a web server and only the web server has a direct connection to the internet, the rest of the network are connecting through another place. I was inspecting the traffic on the server with tcpdump, and i found a LOT of connections from different IP addresses to port 6881. All ports on my machine are blocked except those who are really needed for a web server (like port 80), so i checked it out and confirmed that 6881 and the rest ports are in filtered(firewalled) state. Why all those ips are continuously trying to make connection to the server on port 6881 no matter it's not open at all ? Is this some new kind of attack or maybe there's some new exploit (maybe 0day?) for some service running on 6881 ? AFAIK on 6881 operate the bittorrent and similar, so really, what's the deal ? It would be nice if someone clarifies me some things.

  • Routing Internet traffic over specific network interfaces [on hold]

    I want to route my internet traffic over all my available connections (like LAN and Data card(3G)), based on conditions like, if a website is blocked over LAN, that traffic goes through Data Card (or other available internet connection). My ultimate motive is to integrate this feature in my web browser which I have already built using C# and .Net framework. I have found that one can add a route by using the following cmd command - route add DestinationIP mask subnet InterfaceGatewayIP but I am stuck as to how should it be implemented using C#?

  • Joining windows LANs through SSH tunnel

    I have at home a computer (a windows 7 ult machine) I need to use to manage stuff at the office which hosts windows and linux servers. I am able to set up a SSH tunnel (atleast for firefox proxying) and I'd like to be able to access shared windows network drives on the other end too. I heard something about needing some kind of samba service but I couldn't find anything useful by googling that. What do I need in order to make an SSH tunnel to the office (a NAS, running linux) so that I can access windows server 2008 and windows 7 network drives? Bonus: I'd like to be able to access a MSSQL database server too if it's possible.

  • Network Error: no buffer space available

    After some time of running fine, one of our Windows XP SP3 machines does not open some(!) new TCP/IP connections anymore. Putty says "Network Error: no buffer space available", IE won't open any new connections but e.g. network drive mappings still work, even new ones can be established. netstat does not show more open connections that usual, ping and dns lookups work fine. Any hints?

    I am trying to find the best solution for my DNS problem. We are running several services in our company that you can reach only over VPN. Other services, that are reachable through the internet got the domain ... At the moment all services inside the VPN network go by .local... These have an VPN IP of the private network 192.168.252.0/24. Clients reach from Linux over OSX to Windows. I can think of 4 possibilities to implement a DNS infrastructure: Most common: an internal DNS Server, that is pushed by the VPN. But this has several drawbacks: your DNS responses are limited to the speed of the VPN Connection and your own DNS server. Because of very complex websites, this can increase the time for a page to load quite a lot. Also: we have several VPNs that are not connected to each other and all of them have their own DNS server. Several DNS servers locally. These have to be configured by hand. And you have to use some third party tool like dnsmasq. If you start a DNS request, you ask your locally running DNS server, which decides which server to ask for which domain name. One college of mine uses such a solution with this OSX (I am sorry, I don't remember the name of the application). You use your domain hoster. Most of them have APIs available to manipulate your DNS entries. So you could pull your private network informations to your domain hoster. I am not sure whether they all accept private network IPs. But I guess there will be some problems in the same way as in number 4. The one we currently use, because it's for us the most logical choice: we forward the sub domain *.local.. to our own public DNS Server. This works quite good for some public DNS Servers like Google. But most ISPs do not forward the answers. Or don't do that always. Like my ISP sends me a positive result of the a DNS request of a *.local.. domain only every 10th time I make a nslookup. (Can someone explain this?) Here the real Question: Is there another solution we were not thinking about? Or: What of these methods do you use?

  • Virtual Network Interface and NAT disables localhost access for MySQL and Apache

    I'm running an Ubuntu Server 12.04, and recently I configured it to do NAT for my laptop. Since the server has only one NIC, I followed instructions online to create a virtual network device (eth0:0) that has a LAN IP address, then further configured iptables and UFW to allow internet sharing. However, just a few days ago, I discovered that one of the PHP pages hosted on the server failed for no apparent reason. A little digging revealed that the MySQL server started refusing connections from localhost. The same happened with a page (PhpMyAdmin) that was configured to be accessible only from localhost (in Apache2). The error, as shown by $mysql --protocol=tcp -u root -p looks like ERROR 1130 (HY000): Host '<host name of eth0>' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server However, the funny thing is, I configured the mysql server to allow root access from localhost (only). Moreover, the mysql server listens only on 127.0.0.1:3306, as shown by: sudo netstat -npa | head Active Internet connections (servers and established) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:3306 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1029/mysqld which means that the connection could have only come from 127.0.0.1 (Note that MySQL is working because I can still connect to it via unix domain sockets) In effect, it seems that all tcp connections originating from 127.0.0.1 to 127.0.0.1 appear to any local daemon to come from the eth0 IP address. Indeed, apache2 allowed me to access PhpMyAdmin after I added allow <eth0 IP address>.     The new version of Process Explorer shows network activity history, but it doesn't in one of my computers. This particular PC runs Windows XP SP3 and it has just been reformatted so everything is "fresh". I have even installed WinPCap and Microsoft Network monitor, in case some of these drivers were necessary, but the graph stays in 0. Any ideas why this could happen?     If a wireless modem router has the option Allow multicast from Broadband Network, what does this mean exactly? What risks are there to leaving it enabled and why would you have it enabled? I understand that a broadcast is sending a packet to every device on the network and a multicast is send a packet to a specified set of addresses. A multicast packet can cross routers whereas a broadcast cannot although I don't quite understand how these "set of addresses are specified"

  • Intermittent internet access on a flat network - Router is connected

    I’m looking for some help with network settings. I’ve just started a new job (non-IT!) and we have problems with our office network. I’m the most IT literate in the organisation (15 permanent employees) and so have been dealing with IT issues. Our main bit of software is web-based so we need constant web access but it sometimes goes down for between 20 minutes and 3 hours despite everything seemingly working fine. It’s a flat network with wireless APs, BT Business Broadband 8Mbit connection and that’s about it. We have no servers and no standard settings and staff are encouraged to bring in their own laptops and connect! The network basically exists to provide internet access and that’s it. We also have students accessing the wireless (and I know there’s a whole list of access and content issues etc but right now we just need internet access stabilised). This is what we have: Building 1 Cisco SLM-224P 24-port PoE 10/100 switch with 2 gigabit ports 3 x ZyXEL NWA-3160 wireless APs Samsung OfficeServ 7100 phone server which borrows the building’s wiring Building 2 Netgear GS605-UK 5-port 10/100/1000 switch 1 x ZyXEL NWA-3160 wireless AP 1 x BT Business Hub – 2wire BT2700hgv – is the DHCP server We have 2 link cables between the buildings. One connects the two switches on a gigabit port. The second (oddly) connects the switch in building 2 to the OfficeServ server in building 1. When the internet goes down I can still access the router through a wireless connection. I can also ping websites and get a response. Firefox just says “Cannot connect” etc. The system then heals itself when it feels like it. (Sorry if this is asking too much but) These are my immediate questions… Why would browser-based internet go down? I don’t know enough about protocols etc but I can try to standardise settings. The WAPs have a DNS server setting and I don’t know whether it should be “None” or “From DHCP”. What should be the DHCP server? The router or the Cisco switch? Or something else?! Would there be any problem in connecting the second link from switch to switch? Is that good practice? Is it worth swapping the Netgear GS605 with either a Cisco SG200-08 or Netgear GS108T-200? Is it worth upgrading the router to, for instance, a Cisco RV042G Dual Gigabit router which would also act as a switch? Or is it better to have a separate router and switch in Building 2?

However, the bridged network that VMware sets up connects my Airport interface in Mac to the wired interface eth0 in Ubuntu. How do I set it up so that the Airport interface is connected to the wireless interface eth1 in Ubuntu?

  • Windows 7 Forbid connecting to a specific wireless network

    Does anyone know how to tell windows 7 to bar a wireless network? It keeps logging into a random open one with no bandwidth my neighbors have instead of the good one we have here. I keep unchecking "automatically log in if available" and it keeps re-checking itself. I want it to NEVER log into this network no matter what without manual intervention. I do not want to disable auto connecting, just tell it "do not ever connect to this one without my express permission".

  • Windows Vista file permissions does not inherit when copying to a network share

    I've got a network share with specific permissions on a subfolder (e.g. access to developers and freelancers). A designer copied PNG files from his local system to the network share. These files didn't inherit the folder permissions, but only gave access to Administrators. Is this a setting somewhere to restrict access, and can it be avoided? The local system uses Vista, the server uses Windows 2003.
