• All terminal commands (like ls, cd, edit, open) are returning errors on my Mac

  From what I can tell from reading other questions/answers is that my .bash_profile file may be corrupt. If I type echo $PATH in terminal the result is: /usr/local/git/bin From what I've read, that's not what the result is supposed to be. But I also can't get any of the commands (like edit or subl, for Sublime Text 2) to open the .bash_profile file to edit it. I was able to open the file in TextEdit using "cmd-shift-.", and here's what's in the file: [[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" PATH=$PATH:~/bin export PATH export PATH=/usr/local/git/bin But the file is LOCKED, so I can't edit it there either. I'm very new to programming and in the middle of trying to install everything on my Mac to go through a Ruby on Rails tutorial. I can't even check my version of ruby, since even ruby -v returns -bash: ruby: command not found Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Windows Media Player won't open

  When I tried to play a DVD on my laptop, I tried to open WMP but it didn't open. I did leave the DVD in my laptop for a fortnight but when I played it a week ago it was fine and my DVD drive is reading the DVD so I think that's ok. I tried to make sure WMP is up to date and it was working fine until a few days ago. I can't think of any triggers for this and when I tried to uninstall it that didn't work either as I couldn't even find it in the programs list. I then tried to install a different media player (GOM) but that didn't play my DVD either although it did play music fine. I am really concerned - should I just get a new laptop? Or is it worth getting it fixed?

• Can Robocopy be made to skip open files?

  We are using Robocopy to redistribute files which arrive via FTP in a drop folder. Ideally we want Robocopy to leave files alone if they are still being FTPd. Having tried various switches, Robocopy still copies the open files. It doesn't delete them, so the FTP continues unaffected. However, we end up with truncated files being distributed to their destination. Can Robocopy be made to skip open files? Perhaps there is something more suitable than Robocopy for this task?

  I just ran apt-get upgrade, and according to /var/log/apt/history.log, openssl has been updated to version 1.0.1e-2+rvt+deb7u7. Now I have one SSH session still open, but I can't open another one. I restarted SSH, which returned OpenSSL version mismatch. Built against 1000105f, you have 10001080. I tried apt-get remove openssl && apt-get install openssl with no luck. I'm running debian on a raspberry pi. Edit: moved to SuperUser

• Shortcut key for "Open file location" in Windows 7

  I'm new to Windows (former Mac user) and using Windows 7 for about two months now. I almost exclusively use the taskbar to navigate to files (i.e., I press the Win/meta key and start typing... my libraries and naming conventions make it pretty easy to get the correct file). Then I press enter and the file opens. Awesome. But sometimes I want to see the file in its folder (i.e., maybe I want to rename, move, copy, etc.). To do this I need to mouse/trackpad over and right click to get the "Open in file location" options. Is there another way, short of searching for the folder name instead? Is there a hotkey/shortcut for "Open file location"? Thanks!

• Open file in local text editor from within an SSH connection

  I'm not a vim guy. I'd like to be able to open log files in Sublime Text when in an SSH connection from within Terminal. Is there a way I could do this? I'm thinking there must be a command or something that could copy the file over to a temporary directory in OS X and then open it in Sublime Text, and when I save it, it'll copy back to the original location through SSH; similar to how FileZilla does it. I'm on Mac OS X MT. The server I SSH into is running Ubuntu. I'm using Terminal.

• Google Chrome gets really slow on 10+ open tabs

  For some time already I face a problem with Google Chrome. I really love this browser, but on Windows 7 on a pretty decent machine (i5, 4GB RAM) it gets REALLY slow when I open for instance 10 techcrunch.com pages. Once I do that it becomes virtually difficult to scroll through pages and the general responsiveness of the browser gets down. And if I open 20+ or 30+ tabs there is a good chance all of them will crash. Does anyone got an idea? This happens to me on several PCs with Windows 7 64bit. At 10 tabs there is 600-700MB memory used by Chrome. Two systems have the issue are both laptops with integrated graphics. One by Intel, the other an nVidia GeForce 310M.

• Cannot create persistent "open with" association for Photoshop CS4

  I'm trying to fix a computer from a friend, which has for some unknonwn reason installed the 64bit and 32bit version of CS4. The 64bit version does not work, the 32bit does. However it seems that the 64bit version was the first installed one, associations to the .psd files are going to the 64bit version. There seems no way to create an association with only the 32bit version. When I select open with` and I browse to the 32bit version and select open, it does not get added to the list of applications? Update: Unfortunately the problem just went away. It's annoying as the root cause is likely never to be found, I'm accepting Fopedush's answer for this "detailness".

• Fastest reliable way to open the terminal?

  I actually had my SUPER_L ( left windows key ) binded to gnome-terminal, but for whatever reason ever since upgrading to 9.04 Ubuntu from 8.10 Intrepid it seemed to break the key binding. It was very handy because I could throw open the terminal with one key ( sorry but alt-f2 and typing gnome-terminal isn't practical for me ). Or perhaps it reset all the keybindings? I remember using xev and some gui type interface that was akin to Win32 registry editor. Anyway, I'm curious as to what you guys use to open the terminal.

• PowerPoint 2010 won't open any files.

  Recently I installed Office 2010 BETA on my friend's laptop after recommending it to her. The problem is, whenever she tries to open files in powerpoint it claims that there is a problem with them and it can attempt to repair them, when you click repair it just says there was a problem with the file and it can't open it. The exact same .ppt files work fine on my copy of PowerPoint 2010 (we sent the file from her laptop to mine via MSN) so I'm confused as to why they won't work just on her laptop. Any insight into this would be fantastic :) Thanks.

• Can't Open Up Event Viewer

  I just installed a large backlog of Windows Updates (I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit) and now a handful of programs are acting strangely (not opening, crashing, etc) I went to try to diagnose the program using the Event Viewer, but when I open it up I get the error "Microsoft Management Console has Stopped Working" immediately after I double-click on the icon. Is there any way for me to figure out what is going wrong? I have another Windows 7 PC, that I tried to remotely view the logs from, but I got the error "The RPC Server is Unavailable". I'd like to start up the service, but oh wait, I can't open anything in the "Administrative Tools". I'd like not to re-install Windows, as I had just done so a couple months ago after a Windows Update jacked up my graphics card drivers.

  Some users on my network are having difficulties saving files, because the file is open elsewhere. Let's say Lemuel wants to edit a file, but Bernice in the next office over is working on it. Lemuel opens, edits, and tries to save, but then gets a "no write access" error. Bernice chortles with glee (since earlier that week Lemuel stole her sandwich). Unfortunately, various softwares will not warn the user that they have opened a read-only file. Is there a way (in Windows) to limit file access to ONE user only, i.e. 777 for the first user to open the file, and 000 for all users after that? (Sorry for the Linux terminology but it gets my point across).

• mysql server, open 'dead' connections

  my basic question is what kind of impact does this have on the server.. lets say for example, there is an older program in my company that opens connections to a mysql database server at a high rate (everything they do with the application basically opens a server connections) however, this application was not designed in the way to dispose of the connections after they where created.. alot of the time the connections remain open but are never used again, open 'dead' connections i guess you could say. they just remain connected until the server times them out, or until an admin goes in and removes the sleeping connections manually. im guessing this could be responsible for sometimes not able to connect errors etc. that we receive from other systems that try to access the mysql database? (connections limit reached) could this slow down the server as well? curious what all this could exactly cause. thanks!

• Applescript won't open applications on my external monitor

  I'm trying to open a new MacVim window with Applescript, and have found partial success with this: do shell script "cd \"~/code/application\"; ~/bin/mvim > /dev/null 2>&1" This works fine, and opens a new MacVim window with it's working directory set to ~/code/application. BUT it always opens on the screen of my laptop, not on the external monitor with the currently active space where I am working. Is there a way to get MacVim to open in the current space?   I'm looking for a solution to forbid links in Google Chrome to open new tabs (in most cases it is a target="_blank" issue). So, I want all links to open pages in currently active tab, not in new tab. I tried a wide range of addons (for ex. "Death to target=_blank") and greasemonkey scripts that are supposed to remove target=_blank attribute but none of them worked. It is extremally anoying when I want to switch between accounts in GMail or navigate from GMail to GDrive. I always get the new tab opened and I need to close last tab manually.

• Make Ms Word activate window of file if it is already open when I double click the file's icon?

  When I try to open a word document that is already open, I want it to just activate the window where the file is open. How can I do that? sometimes it takes time to check if an ms word document is already open, I don't to have to have to check through a bunch of open word documents to see if it's in there or not, I just want to double click the icon of a word document, and if it's open then go to it, if not then open it. With the doc/docx or shortcut to the doc/docx , I have some files where when I double click , it activates it when already open. I have other files where double clicking will bring up a "file in use" dialog box. I can't find what is the cause. I want it to always activate the window rather than reopen it. update- maybe that is default behaviour to activate when already open, and after a crash I had that stopped. i'll try deleting the working files and starting ms word again, idea from here

• Open mail-links with gmail in Chrome 9

  it happens quite often, that I click a link over a persons name, just to see that it launches the default mail client of my system. I thought it would be a normal link, but it was a "mailto:"-link. I would like Chrome to start gmail, not my default email client. For Firefox, I had only to paste this in the URL-Bar: javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail") Unfortunately, it doesn't work in Chrome 9. I have found this tutorial for Ubuntu, but I would like a solution in Chome. If it is only in Chrome, I can sync the settings. • Unable to open websites that use HTTPS on linux

  I have the following network configuration: My PC 192.168.1.20/24 uses 192.168.1.1/24 as a gateway. Dlink-2760U router with Local address 192.168.1.1/24 has a VPN connection open with the provider using PPTP. Whenever I'm trying to open some web-sites that has some authorization (e.g. gmail.com, coursera.org), I'm getting a request timeout. This problem is observed mostly on linux (Ubuntu 12.04 and Debian 6.0), while most of such websites work correctly on windows XP. Could you please help me diagnose the problem? Could it be related to NAT + HTTPS? Thanks

• Accessing to shared folders with OpenVPN

Network where centos server is having local IPs 192.168.123.* Network where windows machine is having local IPs 192.168.1.* I installed and configured my openpvn server on centos 5 and client on a windows machine. Generated all keys, certificates e.t.c and transferred them to client and I'm able to connect to server. Below there is a screenshot of the client log. Also on server side I can also see incoming packets with this command tcpdump -n port 1723 So I assume I did most of the things correct. But still when I try to open shared folders using \\192.168.123.33 or \\network-name I can't access folders

  Hi all, I have a very specific problem. We have a wifi router at home which supports three laptops and a desktop. For the past month or so, I've been unable to open a number of websites on our HP desktop, Dell laptop and my Macbook. These include everything connected with http://wordpress.org and several others. The page simply refuses to load. I can't access some other websites as well. I've tried everything. We've rebooted the router, deleted all the cookies/download history, but nothing works. I've tried accessing these websites on IE, Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Strangely, when friends use their laptops on the same wifi connection, the websites open just fine. What do I do?   I have my open table cache set to 1800 and I have a total of 1112 tables. MySQL Tuning Primer reports that 100% of my table cache is used yet my table cache hit rate is 5%. I understand that this happens due to concurrent connections all opening tables. I think I should raise the cache limit. I understand that the cache size is limited by the file descriptor limit of my operating system, but are there any other practical limitations I should be aware of? Searching Google or this very website yields mostly posts explaining the connection-factor or come up with indecisive answers. My question: can I safely increase the open table cache limit? Is there a maximum?

  Hey Guys, Here's the challenge--I developed Softphone Screenpop PHP App that takes caller id info and searches for a match in our db, also allows us to collect call statistics. Great for our management but it's driving our reps nuts. We use firefox here and when our softphone pops to the external page, every time it opens in a new tab, the girls quickly get 5-10 open and it becomes confusing. Our softphone will also run command line. I wondering if there is a way to have a URL open in a certain tab. Otherwise does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks!

  Hi all, here is what I am looking for, I use a number of software packages when creating online learning courses. I have a huge number of courses and they use text, audio files, images and video files. I am looking for somthing that I can install on our server and upload the content, index, tag and categorise and enter a description so that when a screen print has to be changed for example I can find all the places that I used the image so that I can go in and change the image without having to check every file that I have created over the last year. An open source solution would be great or something that isn't to expensive. Thank you for any suggestions you can make.
