  • Homebrew requires something uninstall-developer-folder removes

    I was having trouble installing irssi (brew install irssi), so I ran brew doctor, which returned a warning mentioning an outdated copy of Xcode and saying I should run /Developer/Library/uninstall-developer-folder. Then I ran brew doctor again and got: Error: No such file or directory - /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk How do I reinstall the SDK, or is there another way to get Homebrew working again? UPDATE: /Developer actually still exists (despite the obvious implication of uninstall-developer-folder), as does /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.7.sdk. Why does Homebrew specifically need Snow Leopard's SDK?

  • Automatically enable Xcode "Developer Mode" on computer lab workstations

    After reimaging a computer lab workstation, the first time a user tries to build and run an Xcode 4 application, Xcode pops up the "Enable 'Developer Mode' on this Mac?" prompt, requesting an administrator password. How can I automate this process (via a script), so that I don't have to go around to every workstation, create a new Xcode project, build and run it, and enter the admin password each time the workstations are reimaged?

  • Picasa v.3.6.2 for Mac is suddenly very slow - what are the implications of rebuilding my database?

    Recently Picasa v3.6.2 for Mac has become very sluggish - mainly noticable for any (non destructive) changes made to photos such as starring an image. This action used to be nearly immediate, but recently I've found it can take 1-3 seconds for Picasa to register the change, and become responsive again. I'm considering rebuilding my Picasa database as per these instructions - however I'm concerned I may lose any pre-existing non-destructive (unsaved) edits, along with Picasa albums that I have created. Curious if anyone has experienced Picasa sluggishness with the latest version and/or what their results have been from rebuilding their database. My last resort is to SuperDuper my drive and then rebuild the database, so I can always restore it if I lose critical data.

    Hi, When I ran the uptime on my MacBookPro machine I got the following result: Last login: Thu Jun 3 14:43:40 on ttys000 Osama-Gamal-MBP-2:~ iOsama$ uptime 14:49 up 7 days, 20:10, 2 users, load averages: 0.29 0.24 0.24 Why it lists that there are two users? is it normal? and who is the other user, is it the root user or what?   • Setting up router: I can get online via Ethernet, and I can connect to router wirelessly, but can't

    I'm setting up a new D-Link N300 router, and trying to connect a MacBook Pro and a MacBook, both running OS X 10.6. As the question says, either computer can connect to the internet when connected to the router via Ethernet. And either one can get on the router's wireless network. But when connected wirelessly (without the Ethernet cable plugged in), neither one can get online. I can't figure out why that would be. Any help appreciated.

  • Sane(r) way to get character-encoding of CLI?

    Hi all! I was writing a CLI-Tool for Mac OS X (10.5+) that has to deal with command-line arguments which are very likely to contain non-ASCII characters. For further processing, I convert these arguments using +[NSString stringWithCString:encoding:]. My problem is, that I couldn't find good information on how to determine the character-encoding used by the shell in which said cli-tool is running in. What I came up with as a solution is the following: NSDictionary *environment = [[NSProcessInfo processInfo] environment]; NSString *ianaName = [[environment objectForKey:@"LANG"] pathExtension]; NSStringEncoding encoding = CFStringConvertEncodingToNSStringEncoding( CFStringConvertIANACharSetNameToEncoding( (CFStringRef)ianaName ) ); NSString *someArgument = [NSString stringWithCString:argv[someIndex] encoding:encoding]; I find that a little crude, however -- which makes me think that I missed out something obvious...but what?     I upgraded to Mavericks and found that pdflatex stopped working. I followed some previous discussions to recreate a link that Mavericks had broken. sudo ln -fs /Library/TeX/Distributions/.DefaultTeX/Contents/Programs/texbin texbin The error message changed to "Permission denied". I tried to change permissions, but it does not work.   • Increse gap (pause) between songs

    Hello, I googled a lot before asking. This is really a problem. I know that there's an option in preference to switch off cross fading, but this is not what I want to do. Cross fading doesn't add any gap at all. If there's no gap between two songs, so you won't hear any. I need a real GAP between song, I mean a REAL pause about 2 seconds. Why? My MD player can't handle songs if there are no gaps in line input. Even with 1 second gap MD records 2 songs as 1. Is there any software that can increase the gap in the playlist? I know that Winamp has a plugin for putting pauses between songs. Is there anything for iTunes or Mac OS X? Another work around is to add a 2 sec MP3 between each song in the playlist but this is really killing me to do. I'm more on lossless stuff, so .CUE files would be an option too (using XLD for converting)

  • Apple / Mac OS X - Is there a Package Manager like Linux

    I am a Linux/UNIX user and love the package management that comes with it. For the most part, I like Ubuntu, but just like anything else, it is the minor things that you live with daily that would be nice if they just worked. My main issue is my wacom tablet while it works, every time there is an OS update, I have to rebuild the wacom driver. The other slightly annoying issue is, my ATI video card is not fully supported. When I use the HDMI out, the sound doesn't go through it, and the screen is not entirely used. I would happily get an Apple if it had a similar package management system like Ubuntu, Gentoo, or other Linux distribution. This takes the work out of getting the latest enhancements or fixes. It also takes all the guess work out about what you need to get something to work. I just want to use my computer, not administer it. Aside from Apple applications, if I wanted to install the GIMP on an apple, would it go and fetch ufraw if I wanted support for that and whatever other dependencies GIMP has? If I want Netbeans installed, will it go and get a JDK and maven if I want that? If not, is there something in the works? I know I don't update my applications that frequently, but that is mainly because I'm not aware of the updates. The updates all happen in the background. Walter

  • How do I get rid of Adobe Download Akamai software on a Mac?

    I installed Adobe's Download Manager Software when I was downloading a CS4 trial. It was called Akamai. I can not seem to get rid of this pesky thing. I have Little Snitch installed so I was annoyed that it showed that this app would phone home for updates every login. I felt this was an unnecessary process I wanted rid of. I've uninstalled it using App Cleaner. Now on login the Akamai app does not produce any Little Snitch prompts. "SoftwareUpdateCheck" does. SoftwareUpdateCheck wants to connect to a950.gi3.akamai.net on TCP 80. SoftwareUpdateCheck is /System/Library/CoreServices/SoftwareUpdate.app/Contents/Resources/SoftwareUpdateCheck. How do I rid myself of this? Mac OS X 10.6

  • disable subtitles in mkv in quicktime

    I want to watch movies without subtitles. And I also like QuickTime for the feature that it could extend the frame to fit the screen (even though it hides some area from the sides). I have Perian installed and I want to watch mkv files, but they are all with subtitles. In QuickTime in View-Subtitles the only option is Off, but still I can see the subtitles. VLC plays same movies without subtitles, but it doesn't have this nice feature of extending the movie frame so that it fits the screen.
