  I am a tech guy with around 7 yrs in IT and i basically work on LAMP technology. From past few months i have gained interest in hadoop. But i am confused on few points Is it worth investing time and money for learning hadoop? Is hadoop gonna stay for long or even big data concept gonna stay for long? Does learning and working hadoop take care of my compensation part? I have no idea about java. Is java a mandate for Hadoop. I have read answers where they say both.

• How is this "interface"-like structure/pattern called?

  Let's assume we have an XmlDoc class that contains basic functionality for dealing with an XML data structure and saving/loading data to/from a file. Now we have several subclasses, A, B and C. They all inherit from XmlDoc and add component-specific methods for setting and getting lots of data. They are like "interfaces" but also add an implementation for the signatures. Finally, we have an ABCDoc class that joins all the "interfaces" via virtual multiple inheritence and adds some ABCDoc-specific stuff, such as using XMLDoc-methods to set an appropriate doc type. We may also have an ADoc class for only saving A data. How is this pattern called? "Interface" is not really the right word since interfaces usually do not contain an implementation. Bonus points for C++ code conventions.

  Is there any hard data (studies, comparisons, not-just-gut-feel analysis) on the advantages and disadvantages of working from home? My devs asked about e.g. working from home one day per week, the boss doesn't like it for various reasons, some of which I agree with but I think they don't necessarily apply in this case. We have real offices (2..3 people each), distractions are still common. IMO it would be beneficial for focus, and with 1 day / week, there wouldn't be much loss at interaction and communication. To clarify: it's not my decision to make, I agree that there are pro's and con's depending on circumstances, and we are pushing for "just try it". In the function header used in the solution MEDIAN -SEARCH (A[1 . . l], B[1 . . m], max(1,n/2 - m), min(l, n/2)) I do not understand the last two arguments why not simply 1, l why the max and min respectively.   I am in the beginning of programming an iOS app. Having read the Apple guides on how to deal with errors, I got the following most important points: Exceptions are for programmers Use NSError for the user Now, NSError is usually passed as out-argument which can then be used inside and has to be checked by the caller. However, I'm asking myself whether it is a good idea to use a global error handler, say a singleton which wraps around NSError and could be used to trigger errors and error handling from within the called function. Is there anything against that method or would it be a bad practice?

  I am interested in studying algorithms and my strong points are problem-solving and logical thinking. However what I am guided toward is web-developing languages, SQL and they seem to not exploit the best out of me. I think it's because lots of people can learn these things easily, even steal ideas and copy code. Is that wrong? I was told that "learning algorithms is just for optimization, so you just need to know it (not a deep understanding)", but I think algorithms are my savior; it differentiates one man's abilities from others'. Also I'm learning C++ to benefit my future career. Many people say that web developer is a future trend, which worries me. I don't know what I need to standout in my career, and should I balance between web and software developing or just one? Should I work hard on algorithms?

• Rotate 2d sprite towards pointer

  I'm using Crafty.js and am trying to point a sprite towards the mouse pointer. I have a function for getting the degree between two points and I'm pretty sure it works mathematically (I have it under unit tests). At least it responds that the degree between { 0,0} and {1,1} is 45, which seems right. However, when I set the sprite rotation to the returned degree, it's just wrong all the time. If I manually set it to 90, 45, etc, it gets the right direction.. I have a jsfiddle that shows what I've done so far. Any ideas?

I know the answer involves things like sin/cosin, because I used to know how to do this, but I have since forgotten the formula. Can anyone help?

Network menu does not show wireless access points, but according to syslog it establishes connection. Also, the wireless router provides IP address to the host. I don't want to spend time on debugging and solving the problem that most probably will reappear with new update, so I decided to reinstall 12.10 version. It recognized Broadcom Wi-Fi modem right after the boot, and everything went great, until today I powered it on and suddenly found that it is running 13.4 and all my problems are back! Is it possible to instruct it to stay with 12.10 until I decide to upgrade?

  On a website I manage, I want to use an .htaccess file to allow access to a certain administrative directory only from my home IP address, which is dynamically assigned by my ISP and therefore changes -- not regularly, but it does happen. I also have an account from DynDNS and have one of the auto-update clients making sure it always points to my actual home IP address. I don't actually host anything at home; I just have set up the Dynamic DNS account. Is there any way to combine these features: that is, is it possible write the .htaccess allow/deny commands at my outside webhost in a way that my home IP address is not hard coded into the command, but instead is somehow derived from the Domain Name that the DynDNS has assigned me, by doing a real-time lookup every time the directory's .htaccess file is hit? • Algorithm for determining grid based on variably sized "blocks"?

  I'm trying to convert a set of "blocks" in to a grid-like layout. The blocks have a width of either 25%, 33%, 50%, 66%, or 75% of their container and each row of the grid should try to fit as many blocks as possible, up to a total width of 100%. I've discovered that trying to do this while leaving no remaining blocks in the original set is very hard. Eventually, I think my solution will be to upgrade/downgrade various block sizes (based on their priority or something) so they all fit in to a row. Either case, before I do that, I thought I'd check if someone has some code (or a paper) demonstrating a solution to this problem already? And bonus points if the solution incorporates varying block heights in to its calculations :) Thanks!

  I'm learning C++ and I'm using g++ on Linux for practicing. 1) I want to know if people working as programmers use g++ -pedantic flag and also it's importance in real world. 2) What about other compilers, do they also allow this? Has this become some de-facto standard? I'm interested because I'm reading C++ Primer where the author points that its illegal to use non-const expression as dimension in array definition and g++ by default allows it. And there might be other things I'm unaware of.

  I am reading/learning about interfaces in C# at the moment, and thus far I managed to understand how it differs from an abstract class. In the book I am reading the author explains that interfaces are the ultimate abstract class and that it simply sets the standard of certain methods the inheriting class will have, but then provides the following example... static void Main(string[] args) { ...   i've installed ubuntu 14.04 on my old notebook (acer travelmate 2420). everything is fine except the shutdown. it's hanging in the last screen ("ubuntu" with the points beneath - they change their colour properly...as long as i don't press the "on/off" button of the notebook). i've changed this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" into this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force" doesn't work. can anybody help? i'm a ubuntu beginner, so i maybe don't understand too specific things. thank you.

  I am making a simple little Galaga style game. I want the objects sprite to change whenever it is hit. For example if a laser hits an alien then the sprite takes 1 out of 4 damage to its health points (HP). However I want the sprite to change from green to yellow after 1 hit, yellow to orange after 2 hits, orange to red after 3 hits, and red to pixel explosion after all 4 HPs are lost. That way you can easily distinguish the amount of health each alien has left. How can I do this? Preferably explain it in code.

• Multiple network installs with cached downloads

  I tend to do lots of Ubuntu installs, and I'd like them to be up to date from the moment I do them, and not have to install a bazillion updates as soon as the install finishes. I'd also like to cache those packages somewhere on a machine on my LAN, so I don't re-download all the packages every time. How easy is this to achieve? Is there a guide somewhere to making this happen? Bonus points if I don't have to burn any CDs or use USB sticks! Edit: I have noticed a lot of guides for PXE booting and would be tempted to set this up but every time I find one they seem to be old/outdated and broken. My home server runs 10.04 LTS.

  I have been doing something like this for a while and I have never seen any errors. But, unfortunately, I have never been able to explain why this works. The first line creates a variable which points to a function. The second line just adds func2 to func1 separated by a dot and defines a function. If I add a var in front of func1.func2 then I see a compilation error. func1.func2 = function(){}; Error SyntaxError: missing ; before statement var func1.func2 = function(){}; What type was func1 on first line 1 and what did it become on line 2. var func1 = function(){}; func1.func2 = function(){}; Thanks Venkat
