• Code reviews for larger ASP.NET MVC team using TFS

  I'm trying to find a good code review workflow for my team. Most questions similar to this on SO revolve around using shelved changes for the review, however I'm curious about how this works for people with larger teams. We usually have 2-3 people working a story (UI person, Domain/Repository person, sometimes DB person). I've recommended the shelf idea but we're all concerned about how to manage that with multiple people working the same feature. How could you share a shelf between multiple programmers at that point? We worry it would be clunky and we might easily have unintended consequences moving to this workflow. Of course moving to shelfs for each feature avoids having 10 or so checkins per feature (as developers need to share code) making seeing the diffs at code review time painful. Has anyone else been able to successfully deal with this? Are there any tools out there people have found useful aside from shelfs in TFS (preferably open-source)?

I am using Microsoft technologies, like ASP.Net, C#, .Net, SQL Server 2008, IIS and Windows Server 2008. Nowadays, more and more users are using 3G mobile phones, and I am wondering from software perspective, how to add new features to my web site (do I need a client application runs on mobile phone as well?) so that 3G users could have good user experience or new kinds of 3G specific applications? • Manage bad_alloc exception in C++ construtor

  I have Java experience and recently am doing some C++ coding. My question is that if I have class A, in which I have to instantiate class B and class C as two of the member variables of A. If in the constructor of A, should I assume that allocations of class B and C never fail, and handle the bad allocation exception in the destructor of A? If I don't make that assumption, meaning that I add some try catch block to catch bad_alloc of class B and class C, then if the allocation exception occurs, should I do clean up in the constructor of A? What are the recommended practices? If "new" generates a bad allocation, what value does the pointer carry?

• J2EE/EJB + service locator: is it safe to cache EJB Home lookup result ?

  In a J2EE application, we are using EJB2 in weblogic. To avoid losing time building the initial context and looking up EJB Home interface, I'm considering the Service Locator Pattern. But after a few search on the web I found that event if this pattern is often recommended for the InitialContext caching, there are some negative opinion about the EJB Home caching. Questions: Is it safe to cache EJB Home lookup result ? What will happen if one my cluster node is no more working ? What will happen if I install a new version of the EJB without refreshing the service locator's cache ?

  Hi! I am looking for a stand-alone, easy to use from C# code, template engine. What I want to do is create an html and xml files with placeholders for data, and fill them with data from my code. The engine needs to support loops (duplicating parts of the template form more that one object) and conditions (add parts of the template to the final html/xml only if some conditions are true). Can someone recommend a good option for me, and add a link to more-or-less such code sample, and some documentation about how to use the recommended component for my needs? • Does Ruby/Rails require more unit testing than say a PHP app?

  I don't find the unit testing push in the PHP market like I see/read in the ruby/rails arena. Could one just as easily NOT unit test in ruby/rails as in php, or is ruby just too bendable and breakable that it "more" recommended to test in ruby than in php? Meaning there are large code bases like vBulletin, and from what I can tell, they don't unit test. I hope you understand what I am asking here, not the pros/cons of testing, or whether one should test or not, but rather, does one language need to be tested more than another? maybe its easy to write buggy code, or break during refactoring etc.

• Django: How can I add weight/ordering to a many to many relationship?

  I'm having Pages with TextBlocks on them. Text Blocks may appear on different pages, pages may have several text blocks on them. Every page may have these blocks in an ordering of it's own. This can be solved by using a separate through parameter.   Boy did I get an education looking into this. I guess I've been spoiled by Powerbuilder, which has fantastic functionality for this out of the box. Does anyone seriously write custom documentpaginator objects to handle reporting needs for their LOB apps? I want to be able to print "for free" and not have to code like crazy just to take whats on the screen and throw it on paper. How are people doing this? • Eclipse organization: workspaces, working sets, projects, folders, multiple source folders, ....!!!

  There is quite a tier of organization in Eclipse. You can have multiple workspaces, each of which can have projects, these projects can be assigned to working sets, and then each project can have source folders... How do you use all this organization? Do you even use it all? Working sets are so hidden that I hardly know what they are; are they commonly used, or are they hidden because they are so uncommonly used? What is even the methodology behind all this? I'd like a good explanation of the recommended way to use all these different organizational layers, because at the moment I basically just have a bunch of random projects in a single workspace (the default %USER%/workspace folder) and it's getting to be quite an alphabetical mess. So in essence: How do you keep your Eclipse workspace(s) organized?

• Implementation communication protocols in C/C++

  I am in the process of starting to implement some proprietary communication protocol stack in software but not sure where to start. It is the kind of work I have not done before and I am looking for help in terms of resources for best/recommended approaches. I will be using c/c++ and I am free to use use libraries (BSD/BOOST/Apache) but no GPL. I have used C++ extensively so using the features of C++ is not a problem. The protocol stack has three layers and it is already fully specified and formally verified. So all I need to do is implemented and test it fully in the specified languages. Should also mention that protocol is very simple but can run on different devices over a reliable physical transport layer Any help with references/recommendations will be appreciated. I am willing to use a different language if only to help me understand how to implement them but I will have to eventually resort to the language of choice.

• Where should common static resources (images, js, css, etc) go in DotNetNuke?

  Is there a recommended location to store static resources (images, css, js, etc) in a DotNetNuke 5.x installation? There are /images and /js folders as well as a /Resources folder that contains resources. There appears to be some overlap as MicrosoftAjax.js is in multiple locations (but might be different versions?). I also could put resources in a /DesktopModule/ModuleX location. Does anyone know if there is a difference in using any of these folders? I kinda like the idea of all static resources being under a common folder (/Resources) so I could set caching rule headers, permissions, etc on them in one place.   Hi everyone, Im trying to make my own debian distribution but I have a problem. simple-cdd works fine but when I try to install my generated .iso, everything goes right since a message apears: " No installable kernel was found in the defined APT sources You may try to continue without a kernel. and manually install your kernel later. This is only recommended for experts, otheriwse you will likely end with a machine that dosent boot. COntinue Without installing a kernel? " And if y say yes, it continues... When is time to install grub it says: " Installation step failed An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk " HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• VS 2008 - Procedure to ship C#/WPF solution to ensure compatibility

  I am attempting to collaborate on a C#/WPF project with another developer remotely via e-mail; and although the code compiles perfectly when it leaves, my collaborator has not been able to compile the code on his side. We are both using VS 2008 Version 9. This is the first time trying to work with someone else on an application and I was hoping that someone would advise me if there are any suggestions to obtain and ensure compatibility between the two of us? Additionally, is there a recommended procedure to prepare the solution for shipment (ie. just zip up the solution folder? export the application? etc.)? Thanks very much.

• Editing a 1MB file continuously, what's more efficient?

  I've to be continuously editing a 1MB file, simulating a file system. I've to modify the directory of File Control Blocks, FAT, blocks, etc. Proffesor recommended overwriting the file every time an update is made. 1MB shouldn't take minutes to do that, but I don't like this way. Is it a FileChannel the way to go here? Also, I understand that if I edit a MappedByteBuffer, the content of the mapped file region is also edited immediately? i.e. is reflexive mapped? Thanks.

• How to delay user login until RunOnce is completed? [Win XP]

  Currently I have an application that runs at startup when a user log's in to the account (administrative), as well as something under HKLM...\Run which is also executed - but I need to run something once and BEFORE both these things are executed. My solution was to use HKLM...\RunOnce which is executed before the HKLM...\Run but the task can take 30-45 seconds which gives enough time for the user Startup to be executed and launch the application prematurely. I thought of maybe including a SLEEP but RunOnce doesn't block the user account load... Then I considered the group policies but they do not have a RunOnce equivalent that I can use... Also I am not sure if Group Policy is run at the right time (never used it before). Is there anyway to make my RunOnce delay the account startup of my application, or a better place where I can execute it before both HKLM...\Run and user Startup? Or any recommended alternatives? Any ideas or help would be much appreciated... Thanks,

• Which filter of FileSystemWatcher do I need to use for finding new files

  So far I know that FileSystemWatcher can look into a folder and if any of the files inside that folder is changed,modifies,.etc... then we can handle it. But I am not sure which filter and event I should use in my scenario: Watch for a Folder, If a file is added to that folder, do XYZ ... So In my scenario I don't care if an existing file is changed,etc..those should be ignored...only do XYZ if and only if a new file has been added to that Folder... Which event and filter do you recommended for this scenario?

  I just realized that my application was needlessly making 50+ database calls per user request due to some hidden coding -- hidden in the sense that between LINQ, persistence frameworks and events it just so turned out that a huge number of calls were being made without me being aware. Is there a recommended way to analyze individual transactions going to my SQL 2008 database, preferably with some integration to my Visual Studio 2010 environment? I want to be able to 'spy' on individual transactions being made, but only for certain pieces of my code, and without making serious changes to either the code or database.

  Hi , I have a .NET windows application which uses the Google Translate API. When trying to translate strings today i got a "Terms of Abuse" exception. To use a google API effectively, it is recommended that you register for a key which should resolve this problem. My translate API does not use a key. However to use a key,the site states that we would need to enter a valid URL of ours - e.g. http://localhost etc. However this one is a windows application. How do i get a valid key?

  I'm working on creating a date/time user control in WPF using C# 2008. My first user control. I'm also using Matthew MacDonald's book, "Pro WPF in C# 2008". In that book he strongly recommended creating a user control using the WPF Custom Control Library project template; so I followed his suggestion. I've finished writing the code which would go into what I think of as the code-behind file. Now I'm ready to write the XAML. The only problem is, I just discovered there is no corresponding .xaml file? So, I don't get why using a WPF Custom Control Library project is better, or prefered, when writing a user control?

• Trouble using xib files in libraries

  Hi there, I'm having some trouble working with libraries and included xib files. Let me explain my situation first. I've got a project that's running pretty good. Now I need a part of my project as a library for another customer who want's to use some of the functionality in his app. I've created a library with help of that highly recommended article. My customer should be able to initialize a main view controller like this: LibraryMainViewController *lmvc = [[LibraryMainViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"LibraryMainViewController.xib" bundle:foo]; That for sure leads to an error when I try to present that view controller modally. I'm not sure what bundle I have to use here. I tried something like [NSBundle bundleForClass:[SomeClassInTheLibrary class]]; but that didn't solve the problem. I would be glad if someone could tell me how to actually use a xib file in that kind of situation. Thanks –f

• Best keyboards for emacs?

  For emacs users out there, what are your recommended keyboards? Bonus points for keyboards that: Have no capslock key. Instead, a control key in that position. Alt keys that are closer to the center, and easier to use with meta key combos. I find alt keys too far to the left to be a bit awkward to hit with my thumb in some key combos. Help ergonomically with emacs in other ways. I'm not a huge fan of model M style high and clacky keys. I instead prefer laptop style flat keys; however, I'm not disqualifying either category.

The while(c =* ++argv[0]) part being where the warning persists. The code works fine, but what does this warning mean opposed to what is used? I think the code is c = *++argv[0], using the pointer. So why does the single = work and what is really recommended to be used?
