• How to setup up A record for GitHub pages for NearlyFreeSpeech.net

  I own the domain zenstealth.com and I have decided that the easiest way for me to "do" a blog is via GitHub pages and Jekyll, which is already built-in in GitHub pages. I've done that already, and for now I've already setup a CNAME record so that my GitHub pages repo zenstealth.github.com redirects to blog.zenstealth.com. What I want to do is instead of using a sub-domain for the blog, I'd like to make it use the top level domain zenstealth.com. The GitHub Pages instructions say to the set an A record to the ip 207.97.227.245. The problem in NearlyFreeSpeech.NET (let's call it NFSN for short) is that it already already sets A records to files which are hosted directly in NFSN, and I have absolutely no idea on how to override this.

• What's the difference between stateful and stateless?

  The books and documentation on the MVC just heap on using the Stateful and Stateless terms. To be honest, i am just unable to grab the idea of it, what the books are talking about. They don't give an example to understand any of the either state, rather than just telling that HTTP is stateless and with ASP.NET MVC microsoft is going along with it. Am I missing some fundamental knowledge, as i can't understand what is stateful and why is stateful and same goes for stateless. A simple and short example that talks about a control like button or textbox can be simplify the understanding i suppose.

• Auto_raise broken in GNOME 3.4.1?

  Since dist-upgrading 12.04 LTS in such a manner as resulted in an upgrade of GNOME from 3.2.x to 3.4.1, auto_raise is broken. I have the usual auto_raise* settings set in gconf, in apps - metacity - general. But the functionality just doesn't work anymore. Focus follows mouse works fine, yes, but windows just no longer raise after a short delay. I have tried both gconf and tweak tool-based remedies, to no avail. Any ideas on how to work around this? Auto-raise is a really integral part of my workflow.

• Arabic disappeared after 12.04 upgrade!

  Well, I was amongst the 12.04 Beta upgraders, and since then I've lost the ability to write in Arabic, and I've been using Ubuntu since 2008 as an only OS without any issues, and been upgrading since then as well, except on this machine, which received one upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 and it got messed up. I've added Arabic like usual, but it doesn't change with the keyboard's short-cut, and when I do it manually with the Mouse, then it just doesn't work, and it keeps writing in English instead. I've tried to install some iBus things, and added Arabic-kbd (m17n) but it still remains messy, let alone not having the same layout, and all I want is to get to NORMAL. So, please, is there any way to reset or initialize these keyboard related settings, so I can get back to normal and stop using the Mac just to type in Arabic, or so often using XP over Vbox? And please, no Re-install option! I just can't backup all my work right now, and there are a lot of tasks waiting for me to get them done. Thanks for any kind of support :)

• How are components properly instantiated and used in XNA 4.0?

  I am creating a simple input component to hold on to actions and key states, and a short history of the last ten or so states. The idea is that everything that is interested in input will ask this component for the latest input, and I am wondering where I should create it. I am also wondering how I should create components that are specific to my game objects - I envision them as variables, but then how do their Update/Draw methods get called? What I'm trying to ask is, what are the best practices for adding components to the proper collections? Right now I've added my input component in the main Game class that XNA creates when everything is first initialized, saying something along the lines of this.Components.Add(new InputComponent(this)), which looks a little odd to me, and I'd still want to hang onto that reference so I can ask it things. An answer to my input component's dilemma is great, but also I'm guessing there is a right way to do this in general in XNA.

  I have a site that has posts without titles. You can think of them as being a lot like Twitter tweets. Should I put the post contents in the meta title tag or the description tag? If I put the post contents in one of the tags what should I put in the other? My challenge is that we have very short amounts of content with no titles. I want to avoid having too many duplicate titles or descriptions. We have things like user name, full name, date, etc.

  Issue:You changed the windows path and made a mistake and now want to reset it.Solution:In short, you can't. If you restore to the system default, you will loose any paths that were appended when you or the manufacturer installed software and drivers. • How can I backup my PPAs?

  Related to this question. But my concern is that over the past year, most of my more interesting (or used) applications are from PPAs, and just backing up my sources list won't add the associated launchpad keys the way that add-apt-repository does. So I'm looking for a way to list all the PPA urls (like ppa:chromium-daily/stable) so that I can easily script a series of add-apt-repository commands to add them into a new installation gracefully. Short of dumping my bash history of course. Which might be feasible, depending on how far back that file goes back?

  i'm currently working on a project in my spare time (mostly 3-4 hours from monday to friday, and up to 6 hours on sundays) and i've found redmine very useful to hold a record of development tasks. However, there are some stuff, specially when you are trying to prototype or brainstorm a redesign of a set of related classes, that the best tool that i've found for this still is a sheet of paper and a pen. I want to understand if maybe i'm just short of getting to work properly with existing tools. Do you find the use of a notebook or a journal an unavoidable part of software design? are there better alternatives? how do you organize pen-and-paper work and other software management tools like redmine?

  Hy. I have a service similar to bit.ly. The link generation method is similar but the site is not. A user uses my site just like the mentioned bit.ly, but i offer a differnet kind of service for which i would want to rank (on Google) for. If i were to generate links such as: mysite.com/my-keywords/1Asdf34 would it be considered spammy or black hat? The same for bit.ly would be: bit.ly/url-shortening-services/3k1dS4sd For bit.ly it would defeat the purpose, but url length in my case does not have to be short.

• Upgrade to Quantal unity top bar, side bar, and window declorations missing

  I upgraded from 12.04.1 to 12.10 via the Update Manager and the upgrade said it completed successfuly. However after rebooting the unity task bar was missing along with the launch bar and the window declorations. All compiz settings seemed to be purge deleted, and at first bootup it gave me a system error. The desktop exists, and once I remember I messed up the compiz settings and just had to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and in the virtual terminal type "unity --reset" then "sudo reboot". Everything worked as if i reinstalled the entire operating system. This time it said “Warning no variable set. setting to :0. The reset option is now dupricated”. What am I suppose to do now? I need this fixed as soon as possible because I need a couple of certainly installed programs and the data within them (long story short).

  To make it short: to switch to SessionMode (cache to server) in ASP.NET, you need to handle an event and set a property. Sounds easy – but you need to set it in the right place. The most popular blog post about this topic is from Vittorio. He advises to set IsSessionMode in WSFederationAuthenticationModule_SessionSecurityTokenCreated. Now there were some open questions on forum, like this one. So I decided to try it myself – and indeed it didn’t work for me as well. So I digged a little deeper, and after some trial and error I found the right place (in global.asax): void WSFederationAuthenticationModule_SecurityTokenValidated( object sender, SecurityTokenValidatedEventArgs e) {     FederatedAuthentication.SessionAuthenticationModule.IsSessionMode = true; } Not sure if anything has changed since Vittorio’s post – but this worked for me. While playing around, I also wrote a little diagnostics tool that allows you to look into the session cookie (for educational purposes). Will post that soon. HTH

  Okay, this is one of those little things that always bugged me. I typically don't abbreviate identifiers, and the only time I use a short identifier (e.g., i) is for a tight loop. So it irritates me when I'm working in C++ and I have a variable that needs to be named operator or class and I have to work around it or use an abbreviation, because it ends up sticking out. Caveat: this may happen to me disproportionately often because I work a lot in programming language design, where domain objects may mirror concepts in the host language and inadvertently cause clashes. How would you deal with this? Abbreviate? (op) Misspell? (klass) Something else? (operator_)

  I am serching for a script (preferably in PHP) or an external solution which lets me create an "url shortener" with advanced reports. We have been using Google Short Links for a while: it works really well, but it lacks reporting (it only displays a counter with the total number of redirects). Our setup is as follows: "go.mydomain.com" points to the web service, and we can create links such as "go.mydomain.com/product1". What I'm looking for is a similar service (or self-hosted solution) but with advanced reports, so we can track redirects by day, month, etc, distinguish between mobile and desktop users (very important!) and so on.

• Why bother writing an Windows 8 app?

  So you want to know more about development for Window 8. Great! There are lots of reasons you should be excited about this. Since I don’t know why YOU are interested in this, I’ll make a list of reasons people can choose from. (as a side note: whenever I talk about Win8 development I am referring to the Metro Style / WinRt side of things. Apps for the ‘classic’ desktop side of Win8 on Intel are business as usual…) So… Why would you care about making an app for Windows 8? 1. It’s cool. Let’s not beat around the bush: if you like development for a hobby then you’ll love to work on this new platform. You can create apps in a relative short time (short time as in compared to writing a new CRM system) and that makes it great for a hobby product. 2. You’ll stand out. Hey, we all need an ego boost every now and then. We all need to feel special. So if you can manage to be one of the first to have you app in the Store then you’ll likely to be noticed. Just close your eyes for a moment and image you standing in a bar. It’s crowded, and then you casually say “Oh yeah, I just had my app certified and it’s in the Win8 store now”. People will stop talking, will offer you drinks and beautiful women / gorgeous man / furry creatures from Alpha Centauri (whatever your preferences are) will propose. Or maybe not. Anyway…. 3. Make some cash! IDC predicts there will be about 350,000,000 Windows 8 licenses sold in the next year. Think about that number. 350,000,000. And they all have access to the Store. Where you’re app will be. With one little click they can select it, download and somehow magically $1.00 or $2.00 from their bank account is transferred to yours. Now, I am not saying that all of those people will download and buy your app but what if only 1% of them did? Remember: there aren’t that many apps available yet….. 4. Learn. Creating new small apps is a great way to learn new stuff. Yes, you could read about it (on this blog for instance) but the only way to learn something is to do it. So be prepared for the future and learn something new by doing it.Write an app! Now! 5. The biggie (for me at least): it’s fun. Even if you remove the points above it’s still fun to write for these devices and this platform. Now some of you will say : “But why not write a great app for IOS or Android?” I think this is a valid question. Of course the novelty of the platform wears out and points 2 and 3 from above list will not be as relevant as it is today. But still 1 4 and 5 remain. And don’t forget: if you already work on the Microsoft platform it’s not that hard to learn this new Win8 stuff. If you have done some XAML development (be it WPF or Silverlight) you are almost there in becoming a good Win8 developer. So you’ll be more productive much sooner than when you have to learn Objective C or Java. Even if you’re a HTML / Javascript developer (I say developer here, not designer) you’ll be up to speed on Win8 development pretty soon. Yes, you, that funky Web Developer who lives and breathes HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript / Node.Js / JQuery: you too can be a Win8 developer. A first class Win8 developer! So.. • How can i install ubuntu on my ntfs hdd without formatting?

  My hdd is just one partition in ntfs (500gb) and 430 gb is used by my photos/movies/music etc which i never will want to lose. Actually i installed ubuntu on a usb flash drive (using it right now) but it is too slow that way. But my problem is : My computer is damaged ( maybe chipset or but not sure) and none of the windows versions (xp,vista,7) works on my pc. I get blue screen error as soon as windows startup logo shows. But ubuntu just works flawless. That means i cannot use wubi. I wanted to shrink my hdd without losing data (which can be done in windows) but found nothing about that on ubuntu forums. Is this possible? Or install ubuntu on my ntfs filesystem? Note : I don't have chance to backup 400 gbs of data. Sorry for my question if it's written a bit compex. I hope you get the point and someone has an idea ;)

  My environment: I am doing these things at home with the purpose of learning about virtualization techniques. My machine have quad core processor that supports Intel-VT and 8GB RAM. XEN is the virtualization platform. In short, all domUs are LVM based. Mainly I have two questions; I need to have shared storage for these VMs. Something like NFS / NAS / iSCSI etc. However, I don't know which one is the best solution. Therefore, can someone tell me which suits best? Please note that, this shared storage need to be accessed by the other physical machines in the network. How to implement the selected solution for question #1? Any tutorials / guidelines / ebooks will be a great help and highly appreciated. Thank you in advance :)
