• How to efficiently restore Library folder partially deleted on OS X

  I am using OS X Lion, and trying to delete some files I did accidentally (from home directoy): rm -fr Library I realized about this some 15 seconds later and did killall rm Some folders have been deleted, of course, inside "Library". Now the system seems to be ok, but I fear what will happen in case of reboot. I have a Time Machine backup from 5 days ago. I wonder if it would be a good solution, just to copy whole "Library" folder from my home directory from backup and replace this one. Or, what do you think would be the best approach? PS: In order to restore just deleted directories inside "Library", in which order does "rm" start to delete directories, alphabetically?

• Unattended installation for windows 7 x86

  Are there any pre-created Autounattend.xml files for Windows 7 unattended installation x86? I have been experimenting and creating the XML file but I am always being prompted to choose which hard disk to format. I can't seem to add in the script to automate that process. I tried adding the DiskConfiguration portion but the installation keeps giving me error that my diskID is incorrect. How do I resolve this issue? Is there any pre-created Autounattend.xml file that automates everything? I want it to work for VMware virtual machine. Currently, VMware creates its own default disk. So RT Seven Lite only works for normal computer and not VMware.

• Portable VirtualBox with Ubuntu on two machines

  I have VirtualBox Portable installed from vbox.me. I moved it on a USB drive and added a virtual Ubuntu. It works fine on the computer I created it, but moving the usb drive to a different the Ubuntu does not start any more. I already changed location descriptions in <machine>.vbox and the VirtualBox.xml. When pressing Shift while starting the GRUB loader comes up, so I tried the recovery mode. Same here – startup freezes and nothing happens. Any hints for me? • vmware takes too much time to shut down

  Each time I shuting down my virtual machine - it takes like 30 minutes for VM Ware to complete the process. The shut down is done, but it shows a black screen and doesn't respond to any command. I can't do a Power Power OFF or Power Suspend. When I click it - nothing changes. When trying to close - it says "still busy". This happens only when using a Virtual Machine stored on an external hard drive. When Virtual Machine files are stored on a local drive - everything is OK. Hard drive is working good. Any suggestions how can I investigate the issue?

  I am looking a way to establish dev machine on the cloud. I want to have access for development from different places. I don't want to play with sync brunch and so on. It would be Lubuntu with 1G or 512M memory and I want to have way to setup my image. What I have found in the current moment: Amazon EC2 service Azure Virtual Machines I am pretty sure that there should be more services like this. I hope to find one specified for this purpose. I have experience to work in such way and I like it. Unfortunately it was server of certain company for projects of this company and I can't use it for my private aims.   I have successfully installed a 64 bit Fedora 11 guest os using VirtualBox on a host machine (AMD64) running 32 bit Windows XP . At the moment the host machine has 2 Gb ram installed and I've allocated 1 Gb to the guest, which all works well. The host machine can hold a maximum of 4 Gb ram, so I was wondering if it's worth buying an extra 2 Gb for it. I know that 32 bit Windows XP can't use all of the 4 Gb, but can the guest os use any of the ram that the host os can't use?

• Java threads, wait time always 00:00:00-Producer/Consumer

  I am currently doing a producer consumer problem with a number of threads and have had to set priorities and waits to them to ensure that one thread, the security thread, runs last. I have managed to do this and I have managed to get the buffer working. The last thing that I am required to do is to show the wait time of threads that are too large for the buffer and to calculate the average wait time. I have included code to do so, but everything I run the program, the wait time is always returned as 00:00:00, and by extension, the average is returned as the same. I was speaking to one of my colleagues who said that it is not a matter of the code but rather a matter of the computer needing to work off of one processor, which can be adjusted in the task manager settings. He has an HP like myself but his program prints the wait time 180 times, whereas mine prints usually about 3-7 times and is only 00:00:01 on one instance before finishing when I have made the processor adjustments. My other colleague has an iMac and hers puts out an average of 42:00:34(42 minutes??) I am very confused about this because I can see no difference between our codes and like my colleague said, I was wondering is it a computer issue. I am obviously concerned as I wanted to make sure that my code correctly calculated an average wait time, but that is impossible to tell when the wait times always show as 00:00:00. To calculate the thread duration, including the time it entered and exited the buffer was done by using a timestamp import, and then subtracting start time from end time. Is my code correct for this issue or is there something which is missing? I would be very grateful for any solutions. • Repairing Damage to VMWare Virtual Disk

  Evening all, I've got a considerable problem I'm hoping to get some resolution on. I had two VMWare 6.5 virtual machines, one running Ubuntu 9.10 and the other Ubuntu 10.04. I used 9.10 as a testing server, so I could install a LAMP environment to prepare some code. Over the months I took a number of snapshots of this VM just in case something went wrong, and did a full copy of the entire VM a month ago. I created the 10.04 VM when Lucid Lynx launched so I could continue development on a fresh install. To get the files over, I simply added the 9.10 virtual disk into the 10.04 VM, grabbed some of the files I needed, and dismounted it. Unknown to me at the time, the changes to the 9.04 virtual disk meant that I could no longer boot it with the 9.10 VM. I'd always get the "The parent virtual disk has been modified since the child was created." error. I decided this was a good time to backup all the critical files, but now whenever I open the 9.04 disk to get the data it isn't in the same state as it was earlier. My question is; is it possible when I'm mounting the virtual disk that I'm not seeing the most recent snapshot, or in my blundering, have I lost the virtual disk. Cheers

• Running a VM off a USB 2.0 Flash Drive - Mac/Parallels/XP

  I use a MacBook Air as my primary machine, and the 128GB SSD means space is precious. To save about 10 GB, I've been running Parallels with a Windows XP VM off an external USB hard drive, which performs as well in everyday use as running the VM off the internal SSD. So, I bought a tiny 32GB USB 2.0 flash drive, plugged it into the MacBook Air, formatted it first as ExFAT (which was slow), then as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (which was also slow), and copied over my VM file, and ran Parallels off it. My full experience is documented here: http://www.midwesternmac.com/blogs/jeff-geerling/running-windows-xp-vm Straight file copies are really fast — 30 MB/sec read (solid the whole time), and 10-11 MB/sec write (solid the whole time). But I noticed that once XP started running, the disk access rates were in the low KB ranges. Are USB flash drives really that poor at random access, or could I possibly be missing something (the format of the flash drive, etc.?)? Of note, I've tried the following, to no great effect: Formatting the drive as either ExFAT or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Unplugging all other USB devices and turning off Bluetooth (which runs on the right-side-port USB bus). • What USB key would you recommend using for running a Windows 7 VM off of?

  Because I can't find a good PHP editor for OSX, I develop in Windows with PhpEd. At the moment, my development time is split between a desktop and a laptop. To partially solve the problem of having 2 different environments, I have installed a virtual machine (through Virtual Box) and put the hard drive file on an external hard drive. At the moment, I've been connecting it through Firewire 800. I have 2 problems with this setup: (1) The hard drive is fairly large so to carry the laptop and hard drive I pretty much require a backpack. (2) The hard drive requires quite a bit of power and therefore reduces the battery life (by about 40%). My thought is to move the VM hard drive onto a USB key. I realize it will be slower, but as I'm just using it for PHP development, there isn't a lot of disk activity in the VM. The only really intense time is boot up, otherwise, it just about sits idle. Do anyone have any suggestions on a USB key to use for the VM? It would need to a minimum of 32GB.

• Is Hyper-V server suitable as a desktop testbench?

  At the moment we are running a test bench with several desktop computers, that are reimaged every time we need to test on a different operation system. Also because different versions of our software is tested on each image, we have to install our software every time we want to test it. The problem we have had with going with a virtualization technology is that our software is depending on directx/opengl and 3D acceleration, and this has not been something that virtual machines have excelled at. With the release of SP1 for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V has gotten better 3D acceleration support, so we are looking into virtualizing our testbench using this. Our test scenario would most likely be something close to this: 1. Remote into the hyper-V server and load the test VM needed for the current tests 2. Remote into the VM and install the new version of the software 3. Run the tests It would be nice, but not essential, if our support team could remote into the VMs to match the users OS+software combination when doing support. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of settup with hyper-v?

Update: While some of the settings are stored at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TortoiseSVN as stated below, there are other settings that are not. Comments seem to indicate these are Subversion specific settings as opposed to TortoiseSVN, but I cannot find where these are located.

  In /var/log/messages, this error occurred: Sep 19 13:18:15 wdc kernel: [2772302.630416] Machine check events logged Shortly there after, the entire server became unresponsive. This is in the log of the Dom0 for a Xen Server (running the latest version on Debian Squeeze). Can anyone shed some light on what this error means? Should I be ordering new hardware? Edit: Also, it seems to imply it logged something, where can I find that?

  I'm developing on my ubuntu 9.10 machine for the web (php). I'm using it sendmail for sending mails, and while developing on my local machine, I send local mails (to my user 'doron'). Up until a few days ago, I was able to send mails both from php's mail() function, and from the command line using the mail command. I'm using sendmail with mailutils.   I've followed the instructions and installed and configured the Windows Virtual PC XP Mode. I've added it as a machine on the network and can log into it and use network resources. In the process I removed the saved credentials, which are just a default local login to the VM. I need to know how to set this so that the VM auto logs in with the domain account credentials used to log into the physical computer. Google hasn't helped me find the answer.
