Create a real time web application using .net framework and azure - very confused

Let us say I would like a simple (yet complex) web application where there is continuous READING AND WRITING to the sql azure database. Let us say I am tracking a location, and I would like it to be updated very frequently (lets take the worst case: 1 second). From the little knowledge I have, I think that this involves the use of the database to continuously write the location to the database, and continuously read from the database to update another person through a website. Do you please have any suggestion which technologies can I use? Is there a simple way? I heard about node.js, signalR. I have no idea how to use them, if they are really what I need. the last tutorial I checked out simply uses a while(true) loop..but I don't think that that's something good to keep a thread continuously busy... Do I have to create some background task? Do I have to create some web service? This is a school project and I wish not to go for the most difficult option, but if there is some sort of solution, challenge accepted :) Can you please help me? Since I have asked many questions here and yet I have no solution in mind

MVVM: Do I need Inheritance with ViewModels A + B ?

Hello guys my first post on SO because EE sucks in the meantime ;P I am using wpf and mvvm in my desktop application. Scenario: I have a calendar with week A and week B which are rotating by every X week depending on the user settings. But the UserControl "week B" is only visible when the user sets the option "rotating weeks"... The UserControl with week A has a DataGrid and for week B I want to use the same UserControl of course. What I want to achieve is that all data entered/choosen by the user in the Week A is saved/backed by a ViewModel A and Model C. When the user wants a rotating weekly calendar plan I need also a ViewModel B and again Model C. The reason why I need to know what data entered by the user belongs to week A or week B is because I have to write the entered data in a certain order into the database = db.Write(weekA),db.Write(weekB),db.Write(weekA),etc... I am unsure how a solution could look like... What would you do to identify a ViewModel A or B so you know the order of how to write the data in the proper order into database? Any other suggestions are also welcome of course, maybe I think in the wrong direction its late here :) I am new to mvvm so please be patient.

Liftweb Menu customization

I want to create a menu that looks like: HOME | FOO | BAR | ABOUT | CONTACT How might I go about doing this? PHP and MySQL echoing out a Table

Okay, so I've done this before, and it worked. I am trying to echo out specific rows on my database in a table. Convert Justified Paragraph To Image

I need to convert a paragraph of text into an image. Converting the text into an image is no problem. I have the code to do that. But the text must be shown as a paragraph with each line centered. That is a problem! Currently I can convert the text into a left justified paragraph because there are carriage returns in the text string. I suppose it could be center justified with spaces in the string but it would be hard to calculate the required spaces. There must be an easier way. What I need is some way to format the text into a paragraph and then convert it back into a string, preserving spaces. This needs to be done in VB.NET for an ASP.NET web application. Any ideas? I could get the paragraph justified in Rich Text Format but I don't know if it can be converted back into a string, preserving spaces. Creating a PDF is another possibility. The image created from the text needs to be 300 DPI with a transparent background. I'm using the DrawString method of a Graphics object to create the image.

Android lifecycle of thread-based game

I ran into a bit of trouble while trying to get my game to work correctly after being put to the background by the user or a phone call for example. My app has a SurfaceView class called GameView, which has the onDraw() method to do all the necessary drawing for my game and two threads - one for calling the onDraw() and one for doing the necessary calculations for the game's logic. I succesfully implemented onPause() and onResume(). (I paused both threads when back button was pressed and resumed them after user cancelled in the AlertDialog.) Now I would like to have the game paused the same way when onStop() gets called. I put both threads on pause and saved my characters location in the savedInstanceState, but when I start my app again, no method gets called (I checked with Logcat). I believe onRestart() should be called first, then onStart() and then onResume(), but none of that happens. What am I doing wrong? (Didn't include any code, because it seems to be a problem of me not understanding the lifecycle, not a problem in code. If it seems necessary, I'll post the parts you request.)

How does one gets started with Winforms style applications on Win32?

EDIT: I'm extremely tired and frustrated at the moment -- please ignore that bit in this question -- I'll edit it in the morning to be better. Okay -- a bit of background: I'm a C++ programmer mostly, but the only GUI stuff I've ever done was on top of .NET's WinForms platform. I'm completely new to Windows GUI programming, and despite Petzold's excellent book, I'm extremely confused. Namely, it seems that most every reference on getting started with Win32 is all about drawing lines and curves and things -- a topic about which (at least at present time) I couldn't care less. I need a checked list box, a splitter, and a textbox -- something that would take less than 10 minutes to do in Winforms land. It has been recommended to me to use the WTL library, which provides an implementation of all three of these controls -- but I keep getting hung up on simple things, such as getting the damn controls to use the right font, and getting High DPI working correctly. I've spent two freaking days on this, and I can't help but think there has to be a better reference for these kinds of things than I've been able to find. Petzold's book is good, but it hasn't been updated since Windows 95 days, and there's been a LOT changed w.r.t. how applications should be correctly developed since it was published. I guess what I'm looking for is a modern Petzold book. Where can I find such a resource, if any?

Checking if an SSH tunnel is up and running

So a sleep is necessary to give the tunnel some time to get up and running. So the question is: How can i test if the tunnel is up and running? 10 seconds is a really undesirable delay if the tunnel comes up straight away. Ideally, i would like to check if it's up and continue with creating the telnet object once it is, to a maximum of, say, 30 seconds.

Ajax request not receiving xml from Django

I have a Django server which handles requests to a URL which will return some HTML for use in an image gallery. I can navigate to the URL and the browser will display the HTML that is returned, but I can't get that same HTML by doing an AJAX call (using jQuery) to the same URL. I've used firebug and ran jQuery's Ajax method .get("http://localhost:8000/galleryimages/Web") and firebug says that the response text is completely empty. HTML table with auto-fit for some columns, fixed width for others

I'm trying to create a table adhering to the following requirements: The table width must be defined as 0 - the browser should calculate the width according to the column widths (this is to accommodate a column-resize plugin). Some columns may receive a fixed width (e.g. 50px); Columns that do not receive a fixed width, must auto-fit to the content. I have created a small example to illustrate the problem - as you can see column 3 stays at width 0 and so is not visible. Using fonts that aren't on iPhone

I'd like to use some fonts that aren't part of the iPhone OS. I've seen games that use non standard fonts. I can install the fonts, create images for each one in Photoshop and then use those images in the iPhone app. However, I don't think that is a practical way to go. If the color or tint needs to be adjusted (because of background) or size, I'll have to redesign every font I'm using. Is there a better way to do this? I read this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/360751/can-i-embed-a-custom-font-in-an-iphone-application and downloaded the open source font label app. However, it crashes most of the time when I try using particular fonts. In regards to the last comment about using UIFont with the fontWithName:size, that certainly doesn't work. Your font variable will be nil. Listing all available fonts reveals why - none of the custom fonts are in the list. I've also read http://stackoverflow.com/questions/566054/how-do-i-include-a-font-with-my-iphone-application, which definitely does not work. Same as last comment in above link.

Floats being pushed down in IE8 but not IE7 or Firefox

If you view it in IE8 compatibility mode, it doesn't happen, nor does it happen in Firefox. If you browse to a different page in IE8 the issue does not persist. How important is the .NET programming language when you choose a new job?

We are currently hiring at the company where I work, and here the codebase is in VB.Net. We are worried that we miss out on a lot of brilliant programmers, who would never ever consider working with VB.Net. My own background is Java and C#, and I was somewhat sceptical as to whether it would work out with VB, as - to be honest - i didn't care much for VB. After a month or so, I was completely fluent in VB, and a few months later i discovered to my surprise, that I actually like VB. I still code my free time projects in C# and Boo though. So my question is firstly, how important is language for you, when you choose a new programming job? Lets say if its a great company, salary is good, and generally an attractive work-place. Would you say no to the perfect job, if the language wasn't your preferred dialect? VB or C# is one thing, but how about Java or C# etc. Secondly if the best developers won't join your company because of your language or platform, would you consider changing, to get the right people? (This is not a language bashing thread, so please no religious language wars) NB: This is Community Wiki

How to start animation when I'm pressing on item of ListView?

I want to implement next functional: When I'm tapping on ListView's item, it's turning into red color. If I release it has to reverse color back. I made transition drawable and set it as item's background. I tried to implement SimpleGestureListener and started animation on onDown and reversed it on onSingleTapUp events, but it doesn't give me any results (works fine, but items don't turn into red). php how to serialize array of objects?

Hello, I have small class called 'Call' and I need to store these calls into a flat file. I've made another class called 'CallStorage' which contains an array where I put these calls into. My problem is that I would like to store this array to disk so I could later read it back and get the calls from that array. I've tried to achieve this using serialize() and unserialize() but these seems to act somehow strange and part of the information gets lost. This is what I'm doing: //write array to disk $filename = $path . 'calls-' . $today; $serialized = serialize($this->array); $fp = fopen($filename, 'a'); fwrite($fp, $serialized); fclose($fp); //read array from serialized file $filename = $path . 'calls-' . $today; if (file_exists($filename)) { $handle = fopen($filename, 'r'); $contents = fread($handle, filesize($filename)); fclose($handle); $unserialized = unserialize($contents); $this->setArray($unserialized); } Can someone see what I'm doing wrong, or what. I've also tried to serialize and write arrays that contains plain strings. I didn't manage to get that working either.. I have a Java background so I just can't see why I couldn't just write an array to disk if it's serialized. :)

Reduce white space between lines of text

I am creating a webpage (first time) and i'm following as much of the CSS rules and tags as I can. However, I ran into a problem with white space. I've underlined the first line of text but now the second line seems to have drifted below. Can isdigit legitimately be locale dependent in C

In the section covering setlocale, the ANSI C standard states in a footnote that the only ctype.h functions whose behaviour is not affected by the current locale are isdigit and isxdigit. The Microsoft implementation of isdigit is locale dependent because, for example, in locales using code page 1250 isdigit only returns non-zero for characters in the range 0x30 ('0') - 0x39 ('9'), whereas in locales using code page 1252 isdigit also returns non-zero for the superscript digits 0xB2 ('²'), 0xB3 ('³') and 0xB9 ('¹'). Is Microsoft in violation of the C standard by making isdigit locale dependent? In this question I am primarily interested in C90, which Microsoft claims to conform to, rather than C99. Additional background: Microsoft's own documentation of setlocale incorrectly states that isdigit is unaffected by the LC_CTYPE part of the locale. The section of the C standard that covers the ctype.h functions contains some wording that I consider ambiguous: "The behavior of these functions is affected by the current locale. Those functions that have locale-specific aspects only when not in the "C" locale are noted below." I consider this ambiguous because it is unclear what it is trying to say about functions such as isdigit for which there are no notes about locale-specific aspects. It might be trying to say that such functions must be assumed to be locale dependent, in which case Microsoft's implementation of isdigit would be OK. (Except that the footnote I mentioned earlier seems to contradict this interpretation.)

CreateProcess() fails with an access violation

My aim is to execute an external executable in my program. First, I used system() function, but I don't want the console to be seen to the user. So, I searched a bit, and found CreateProcess() function. However, when I try to pass a parameter to it, I don't know why, it fails. "Finding" an object instance of a known class?

My first post here (anywhere for that matter!), re. Cocoa/Obj-C (I'm NOT up to speed on either, please be patient!). I hope I haven't missed the answer already, I did try to find it. I'm an old-school procedural dog (haven't done any programming since the mid 80's, so I probably just can't even learn new tricks), but OOP has my head spinning! My question is: is there any means at all to "discover/find/identify" an instance of an object of a known class, given that some OTHER unknown process instantiated it? eg. somthing that would accomplish this scenario: (id) anObj = [someTarget getMostRecentInstanceOf:[aKnownClass class]]; for that matter, "getAnyInstance" or "getAllInstances" might do the trick too. Background: I'm trying to write a plugin for a commercial application, so much of the heavy lifting is being done by the app, behind the scenes. I have the SDK & header files, I know what class the object is, and what method I need to call (it has only instance methods), I just can't identify the object for targetting. I've spent untold hours and days going over Apples documentation, tutorials and lots of example/sample code on the web (including here at Stack Overflow), and come up empty. Seems that everything requires a known target object to work, and I just don't have one. JQuery Delegate and using traveral options in function

I am having trouble figuring out how to use the JQuery delegate function to do what I require. Basically, I need to allow users to add Panels (i.e. divs) to a form dynamically by selecting a button. Then when a user clicks a button within a given Panel, I want to be able to to something to that Panel (like change the color in this example). Unfortunately, it seems that references to the JQuery traversing functions don't work in this instance. Can anybody explain how to achieve this effect? Is this text wrapping technique possible in CSS and jQuery?

I have built a sliding text thing for a website. http://www.solomonadventures.com/~new/adventure-tours/seafari-tours/ The background contains the menu (on the right hand side), and when it originally loads, I have placed an element to make the text look like it is wrapping around the menu. Now, I have a sliding text thing I was asked to implement. The buttons to use it are currently in the top left corner. My question is, when I slide the content down, am I able to somehow make the text still wrap around it? This is all I have thought of so far (all with trade offs) Make the text appear beneath the menu - no need to wrap Make the text as narrow to the beginning of the menu - no need to wrap Manually place placeholders in the text that make it line break so it appears to wrap - not elegant (site uses a CMS too) Is there any jQuery selector I could write that would allow me to select the paragraph from top (once slid to the top) or the top most text node (so I could do an after() to place a new placeholder element to force it to wrap?) Any other solutions? Many thanks.
