• What partition to use to keep data files in Ubuntu?

  I have been using Ubuntu for a few years and usually my partition set up was the following: Ext3 or Ext4 partition for the system itself (20 GB); A 10 GB swap partition; a big FAT32 partition to store movies, photos, work stuff, etc. (depends on the capacity of the disk, but usually it is what is left from Ext3+Swap, currently it is more than 200 GB). Does this setup sound right? I am considering to switching to one big Ext3 partition now, because the problem with Fat32 in Ubuntu has not gone anywhere: for example, right now I can access my 'big' partition with a 'Data' label only through /media/_themes?END. Pretty strange name for a partition, isn't it? some Linux software fail to read/write on this partition. For example, if I want to play around with rebar and build/make/compile things on this FAT32 partition, it will always complain about permissions and won't work (the same goes for many other kinds of software); it is not stable, I can not refer to some files on this FAT32 partition, because after the next reboot it will be called not '_themes?END', but something else. On the other side I usually begin to run out of space on the Ext3 partition after a few months of usage. So, the question is - what is the best setup of partitions for an Ubuntu system? Should a FAT32 partition be used at all?

• HTTP Protocal

  I have worked with the HTTP protocal for about ten years now and I have found it to be incredibly usefull for transfering data espicaly for remote systems and regardless of the network enviroment. Prior to the existance of web services, developers use to use HTTP to screen scrap data off of web pages in order to interact with remote systems, and then process the data as they needed. I use to use the HTTPWebRequest and HTTPWebRespones classes in order to screen scrap data from various sites that had information I needed to use if no web service was avalible. This allowed me to call just about any webpage and grab all of the content on the page. Below is piece of a web spider that I build about 5-7 years ago. • How to mange big amount users at server side?

  I built a social android application in which users can see other users around them by gps location. at the beginning thing went well as i had low number of users, But now that I have increasing number of users (about 1500 +100 every day) I revealed a major problem in my design. In my Google App Engine servlet I have static HashMap that holding all the users profiles objects, currenty 1500 and this number will increase as more users register. Why I'm doing it Every user that requesting for the users around him compares his gps with other users and check if they are in his 10km radius, this happens every 5 min on average. That is why I can't get the users from db every time because GAE read/write operation quota will tare me apart. The problem with this desgin is As the number of users increased the Hashmap turns to null every 4-6 hours, I thing that this time is getting shorten but I'm not sure. I'm fixing this by reloading the users from the db every time I detect that it became null, But this causes DOS to my users for 30 sec, So I'm looking for better solution. I'm guessing that it happens because the size of the hashmap, Am I right? I have been advised to use spatial database, but that mean that I can't work with GAE any more and that mean that I need to build my big server all over again and lose my existing DB. Is there something I can do with the existing tools? Thanks.

• Building new GIS Workstation - is it worth upgrading to a workstation GPU?

  We are currently building a machine from scratch to act as a GIS workstation. The primary software used is ESRI's ArcGIS and we are mainly working with vector data using raster data only for contextual background imagery. In the past I have built a GIS machine and used a consumer grade gaming GPU (Nvidia 9800GT) and found it to perform fine. However, I have always wondered if I would have been better off equipping it with a workstation GPU such as a Quadro series. Would a workstation GPU make a noticeable difference doing 2D GIS operations or should I save money on the build and equip it with another 9800GT?

  I am working on creating a small cloud (any number of EC2 instances that can be deployed based on load) implementing a VPN as a service for the company I'm working for. This is basically a project gathering together various vpn resources under one aegis as a cloud based service. As a user of openvpn, I'm somewhat familiar with being able to connect, but I'm looking for resources to start this project. Essentially I need to be able to: run a certificate authority and manage keys to distribute to coworkers build an ami that handles openvpn as a service balance the load if necessary among machines instances as needed Any suggestions for tutorials, things to avoid, roadblocks I might not be seeing from a novice perspective, etc. or just help in visualizing this is appreciated.

• MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

  We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. • Seeking webcam with own IP address

  I am not sure if this is the correct place to post, but I couldn't find anywhere better. I am looking for a webcam/movie cam and this site seems more addressed to still images, but ... I am looking for a small, rugged web-cam which can be hand-held or perhaps head-mounted (failing that I can settle for a tripod mount, but I need portability). It must have its own IP address so that anyone can view its video stream from a web browser. I would prefer 2 way voice communication too. Encryption of data is nice, as is compression (H.264). Maybe also remote control, like causing it to zoom from the browser. Does anyone have any suggestions, even suggestions of somewhere else to look? Thanks very much in advance.

• What benefits can I get upgrading my ASP.NET (Webform) + DAL(EF) + Repository + BLL structure to MVC?

  I'm in the process of defining an approach that may best fit our needs for a big web application development. For now, I'm thinking going with an ASP.NET Architecture with a DAL using Entity Framework, a Repository concept to not access DAL directly from BLL and a BLL that call the repository and make every manipulations necessary to prepare data to push in a presentation layer (.aspx files). I don't plan to use ASP.Net controls and prefer to keep things simple and lightweight using plain html, jQuery UI controls and do most of the server calls with jQuery Ajax. Sometimes, when needed, I plan to use handlers (.ashx) to call BLL methods that will return JSON or HTML to client for dynamic stuff. My solution also has a test project that Mock the Repository with in-memory data to not repose on database for testing BLL methods... It may be usefull to add that we will build a big application over this architecture with hundreds of tables and store procedures with a lot of reading and writing to database. My question is, having this architecture in mind, Is there any evident advantages that I can obtain by using an MVC3 project instead of the described architecture base on Webform? Do you see any problem in this architecture that may cause us problem during the next steps of development? I know the MVC pattern for using it in others projects with Django... but the Microsoft MVC implementation look so much more complex and verbose than Django MVC and it's why I'm hesitating (or waiting for a little push?) right now before jumping into it... We are in a real project with deadlines and don't want to slow the development process without any real benefits.

• AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 Now Available!!

  We are happy to announce that AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 is now available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud.   AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 is a minor release within the 20.2 product family that is specifically targeted for users of Agile PLM 9. AutoVue 20.2.2 brings a number of improvements, including support for SolidWorks 2013, AutoCAD and Inventor 2014, SolidEdge ST5, and Cadence Allegro 16.6.   It also includes support for Adobe Illustrator CS4 and up.   Another improvement involves bringing our support for Oracle Linux and Java Virtual Machine versions in-line with Agile's support.   This blog has been pretty quiet for a year now. There's a few reasons for that. Probably the biggest reason is that I view this as a space where I talk about .NET things. Or software development. While I've been doing the latter for the past year, I haven't been doing the former.Yes, I took a trip to the dark side. I started with Ning 11 months ago, in Palo Alto, CA. I had the chance to work with an incredibly talented group of software engineers... in PHP and Java.That was definitely an eye-opening experience, in terms of technology, process, and culture. It was also a pretty good example of how acquisitions can get interesting. I'll talk more about this, I'm sure.Last week, I started with a company called Dynamic Signal. I'm a "Back End Engineer" now. Also a very talented team of people, and I'm delighted to be working with them. We're a Microsoft shop. After a year away, I'm very happy to be back. Coming back to .NET is an easy transition, and one that has me being fairly productive straight out of the gate.(Some of you may have noticed, my last post was more than a year ago. Yes, it's safe to infer that I didn't get renewed as an MVP. Fair deal; I didn't do nearly as much this year as I have in the past. I'll be starting to speak again shortly, and hope to be re-awarded soon.)At any rate, now that I'm back in the .NET space, you can expect to hear more from me soon!

• How likely can my data be recovered after Windows CHKDSK performed on a degraded RAID 5 array?

  Hello there, We have a RAID 5 setup with 3 SATA disks, #2 went down as reported on the pre-POST screen. Unfortunately, for some reason out of my control, the system was rebooted with a degraded RAID :-O Windows XP (64-bit) loaded, CHKDSK ran automatically and done its recovery! From that point onwards, the following error prompts every time even in Safe Mode: lsass.exe - The endpoint format is invalid I took those 3 disks to the data recovery expert and need to wait at least 2-4 days for results. There are 2 VMs on multiple files stored in this RAID 5 array, and there's no backup! Sorry, I just inherited the system from an ex-staff who has left the company 2 months before I joined. How likely the data can be recovered?

• Is there any way to access the mp3 or other file type tags from within an ipod touch/iphone?

  I am just looking for an existing app that will let me read all the tags that are stored in a particular song on my ipod touch/iphone. I'm not much of a programmer, but would be willing to learn the iphone sdk (on windows) if I could build a program that would do this for me. I would love to be able to modify the tag while on the iphone, but just viewing them would be a great use to me. I'd like to read the Year tag, the comments tag, composer, etc. It's so annoying that I can't do this. Or can I already and I just don't know how. Yes, I know how to view the lyrics tag. Seems they could have included the other tags. Help please? Thanks, Dave

• why does and EBS volumes mounted in an Ubuntu 12.04 EC2 instance as /dev/sdh1 appear as /dev/xvdh1?

  When mounting an EBS volume on ubuntu specified as /dev/sdh1 it actually mounts it at /dev/xvdh1. The aws console still thinks it's mounted at /dev/sdh1 so it took a while to realize that it was actually mounted, just in the wrong place I ran into this problem a long time ago using ubuntu on ec2. I just ran into it again https://forums.aws.amazon.com/post!reply.jspa?messageID=351382 and it seems like I'm not alone: https://forums.aws.amazon.com/thread.jspa?threadID=68957&tstart=0 I haven't found a good answer as to why this happens or how to fix it. Any ideas?

I have found many scripts and ideas to effect this but I require that it's not be a "drop-in" replacement, as in it must work globally for any possibly directory from one codebase. • Software RAID to hardware RAID, can it be done?

  Can it be done ... well. (For the record, I did not set this server up.) In my server there are 4 disks. 3 of them are in a software RAID5, and 1 has the OS installed. I want to buy a RAID controller, 4 new HDs and set up a hardware RAID5. If possible, I'd like to just image the current setup, and use it to build my new one. My questions are: Can I image a 3 disk RAID5 to 4 disk RAID5? Are there problems with this? What is considered best practice for your OS. To have it on a separate disk like it currently is, or to install it on the RAID5? Thank you. I can clarify anything. I'm not sure what other info might be pertinent.

  My client site is built in Silverstripe, there is a news page, and it allows people to leave comments. Unfortunately we've got loads of spam emails. I'm new to this, is there any way we can disable the comment field by default? How do I do it? Alternatively is there easy way for me to install a spam protection? Update - Because this is someone else's code, I just realised that they have some sort of spam protection already, so we are trying to disable comments now. • Multiple test Active Directory envirovments hand in hand with production domain controllers

  What's the best approach of having multiple test environments next to production one? We have multiple programming teams that build solutions that use Active Directory very often. We have tried different approaches, starting with their own domain controllers (in same subnet), or additional OU's in our production AD that the team gets control over and can create/delete accounts within that one OU. We thought of possible 4 solutions: Setting up separate OU's in ou production env. Creating subdomains for our contoso.com domain like test.contoso.com, something.contoso.com and delegating control to the teams (would we need additional DC's or the two that we have already would be enough to hold this? Setting up additional test domain controler that has a trust to our main domain and all teams can use the test domain controler as they please. Setting up single domain controller for every team/project. We're taking in consideration amount of resources needed, security (for example having multiple domain controlers with multiple passwords may lead users to use simpler passwords) and overall best practices for this scenario.
