• How to Set Up an SMTP Submission Server on Linux

  I was trying to set up a mail server with no luck. I want it to accept mail from authenticated users only and deliver them. I want the users to be able to connect over the internet. Ideally the mail server wouldn't accept any incoming mail. Essentially I want it to accept messages on a receiving port and transfer them to the intended recipient out port 25. If anyone has some good links and guides that would be awesome. I am quite familiar with linux but have never played around with MTA's and am currently running debian 6. More Specific Problem! Sorry, that was general and postfix is complex. I am having trouble enabling the submission port with encryption and authentication. What Works: Sending mail from the local machine. (sendmail [email protected]). Ports are open. (25 and 587) Connecting to 587 appears to work, I get a "need to starttls" warning and starttls appears to work.   I like to add existing vmware (player) virtual machines to the vmware workstation 8 inventory on linux. When I create a new virtual machine, it is stored in /var/lib/vmware/Shared VMs/. But copying new directories to that folder, does not make them appear in the workstation window. I found out, the inventory is stored in /etc/vmware/hostd/vmInventory.xml; <ConfigRoot> <ConfigEntry id="0000"> <objID>1</objID> <vmxCfgPath>/var/lib/vmware/Shared VMs/test 1234/test 1234.vmx</vmxCfgPath> </ConfigEntry> </ConfigRoot> But I don't know if I break anything when adding entries myself, and giving it an unique ID. Besides, adding a large number of VMs this way is a bit cumbersome. On ESX, it was possible to use vmware-cmd -s register, but I don't have a vmware-cmd installed. In another question it was suggested to use vmware converter. But vmware converter 5 (on windows) only allows a destination file location when I select workstation as destination type. When I select vmware infrastructure as destination type, it says the destination is unsupported; it required vmware vcenter server.

• Second CPU missing of Dual Core

  My Lenovo T61 has a dual core CPU. I just noticed that under Ubuntu 10.10 only one CPU is recognized. I know that once both CPUs worked. Not sure since when the second CPU is missing. Maybe since the last kernel update. Currently I am using linux-image-2.6.35-23-generic (for x86_64). What can I do to enable the second CPU again?   I have project hosted with gitolite on my own server, and I would like to deploy the whole project from gitolite bare repository to apache accessible place, by post-receive hook. The git source path is /var/lib/gitolite/project.git/, which is owned by gitolite:gitolite And with this permissions redmine (been working under www-data user) can't achieve git repository to fetch all changes The whole project should be placed here: /var/www_virt.hosting/domain_name/htdocs/, which is owned by www-data:www-data.   I am setting up server for hosting two WordPress which has size of around 70GB. I have already installed CentOS as OS and I would like to partition the Disk. • How to automatically start VM created by virt-manager?

  I have created a virtual machine with virt-manager that runs on kvm/qemu. The machine works well when started through virt-manager. However, I would like to be able to start and stop the VM through a script in init.d, so that it comes up and down along with the host. I need to have virt-manager show that the machine is running, and to be able to connect to its console through there. When I use the command line that is produced by running ps -eaf | grep kvm after starting the vm through virt-manager, I get some console messages about redirected character devices, but the machine does start and runs properly. However, I do not get any indication from virt-manager that it has started. How can I modify the command line to get virt-manager to pick up the running VM? Is there anything else about the command line that should change when starting outside of virt-manager? • Upgrading to Java 7u65 breaks my Deployment Rule Set for Oracle applications

  My company uses an older version of an Oracle application that requires Java 6u45. Naturally we want to be secure, so we use a Deployment Rule Set to specify 6u45 for that internal application and let other applications use 7u60. Now that we're ready to upgrade the Java 7 half to 7u67, the Oracle application breaks with "Deployment Rule Set required version 1.6.0_45 not available." Of course it is available, it just can't find it for some reason. As a test, I specified that JavaTester.org should use 6u45 also and it works fine with no issues. But when I try to use the same configuration (7u67 and 6u45) against the Oracle application it fails every time. If I downgrade to 7u60, it works. 7u65 or higher, it breaks. The Oracle application hasn't changed so it must be something different in how 7u65+ is handling Deployment Rule Sets or pathing or something.   The question asked below is based on the specific implementations of the Os not the RFC. Looking on a way to be able to assign a fixed ip address to a host, before it boots I found that Centos 6 works fine with no modifications and Windows 7 does not work at all. As defined in enter link description here exists 3 valid ways of generate a DUID: 1 Link-layer address plus time 2 Vendor-assigned unique ID based on Enterprise Number 3 Link-layer address Looking at the centos, that works fine, I can see the following autogenerated DUID: option dhcp6.client-id 0:1:0:1:19:60:25:f1:52:54:0:6b:b9:9e; and the MAC address for this host is: ifconfig eth1 | grep HWaddr eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 52:54:00:6B:B9:9E As you can see, the DUID containts the MAC address. I can assign a fixed ip address to this host by including an entry on my dhcp server similar to: host vm { hardware ethernet 52:54:00:6B:B9:9E; fixed-address6 2001:db8:0:1::200; if packet(0,1) = 1 { log(debug,"VM Request match!"); } } And the Centos 6 gets his ip. On the windows side, I faced a common problem explained on this other link enter link description here As summary, Win7 uses the option 2 of the DUID generation or a variation of this one. On the link explains how to move it to a llt (link layer + time) but is not working fine. If I modify the DUID to one that looks like the one generated on Centos (but with the right MAC) it works as expected. Question 1 How Can I change the DUID generation for Windows 7 to be based on MAC as Centos 6 does? Thanks

  I have two users on my Ubuntu machine. I want to share some media files between these users, so I created a directory in /home/ called 'media'. I made the group 'media' and I added my user 'rks171' to the group 'media'. So: sudo groupadd media sudo mkdir -p /home/media sudo chown -R root.media /home/media sudo chmod g+s /home/media As was described in this post. Then, I added my user to the group: sudo usermod -a -G media rks171 Then I also added write permission to this folder for my group: sudo chmod -R g+w media So now, doing 'ls -lh' gives: drwxrwsr-x 2 root media 4.0K Oct 6 09:46 media I tried to copy pictures to this new directory from my user directory: mv /home/rks171/Pictures/* /home/media/ And I get 'permission denied'. I can't understand what's wrong. If I simply type, 'id', it doesn't show that my user, rks171, is part of the 'media' group. But if I type, 'id rks171', then it does show that my user, rks171, is part of the 'media' group. Anybody have any ideas why I can't get an files into this common folder?

I was able to resolve the problem by doing some guess work. I killed one process which I thought was culprit. Which resolved the problem. Though I would like to know what's proper approach to detect the culprit in such kind of "slow server" situations. Le me know proper way to resolving such slowness issues and decting the process causing the slowness. • Why is there an extra HDD under /dev being added in my Linux Kernel?

  I have created a Linux kernel and for some reason an extra drive is always added at bootup. My hard drive is listed as /dev/sdb. /dev/sda is created too, and it is 8 MB in size. I can't find anything in the kernel config that is creating this, but if I use a different kernel it is not there. Kernel logs show it as an attached SCSI device, looks just like my hard drive but only 8 MB, and has no partition table. It also doesn't appear to be a physical device. I've tried the kernel on many different models of PCs and it is always there. • IIS 6.0 https not working "connection was reset"

  Application Server Windows Server 2003 SP2 with IIS 6.0 IIS has a "Default Web Site" (port 18000, ssl 443, ID=1) with a certificate created by me. I have an specific site called "scj.galaxy.Weekly" (port 80, ssl 443, ID=1272369728) that is working fine. I have an entry in windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts that links galaxy.Weekly.scjdev.ds to the server ip in both my local machine and in the application Server. These sites works: http://scj.galaxy.weekly/test.html works http://scj.galaxy.weekly/test.aspx works But https://scj.galaxy.weekly/test.html fails Error message is: The connection was reset The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The certificate was working fine for months. It was created with something similar to this: Selfssl /N:CN=*.scjdev.ds /V:3650 /S:1 /P:443 I have tried several options and none of them are working: 1) Create a certificate only in "Default Web Site" and link it to SecureBindings with command prompt cscript adsutil.vbs set /w3svc/1272369728/SecureBindings ":443:galaxy.Weekly.scjdev.ds" 2) Create a certificate only in "Galaxy Site" and link it to SecureBindings 3) Create a certificate in both and link them to secureBindings. Probably I am missing an step or something, but I can't see it. • Issues with returned mail sent to web-based email domains

  My company is having issues with returned mail that we send out to external domains. A few weeks ago we replaced a firewall and changed ISP providers and began subsequently having issues RECEIVING emails from external sources because we hadn't updated our new IPs in the DNS records. After making the necessary configuration changes and setting up SMTP forwarding over port 25 to our mail server, everything was working fine up until a few days ago when we started having mail sent out returned to us. We aren't having any trouble communicating internally (to recipients on our domain) but it seems we're having trouble with outbound messages to web-based email recipients. (@hotmail, @live, @yahoo, @gmail...etc) Currently we are running Server 2003 SP2 and exchange 2003. I'm very unfamiliar with configuring Exchange and could really use some help in narrowing down the possibilities. I did some research and am becoming suspicious of Sender ID being the culprit due to our recent IP address change and the likelihood that Sender ID is identifying us as a fake domain. Am I going in entirely the wrong direction? Any input or guidance would be infinitely appreciated. This is the message that is returned when an outbound message fails...this particular one was sent to my @live.com account for testing purposes... Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. The following recipient(s) could not be reached: [email protected] on 5/17/2012 3:02 PM There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. Unfortunately, messages from xx.x.xx.x weren't sent. Please contact your Internet service provider since part of their network is on our block list. I tried a reverse DNS lookup and found that we are set up as a Forward-confirmed reverse DNS. So do I just need to contact my ISP and have them correct their DNS records or is this something I can solve on our end??

• Windows 8 not shutting down properly

  Since installing Windows 8, the computer hasn't been shutting down properly. When selecting to power down, the PC quickly displays the shutting down screen, the monitor powers off, and the computer remains on but unresponsive. After about 5 minutes, the computer will turn off. Upon booting into windows again, I am informed that Windows didn't properly shut down. I'm running a fast SSD, and it's a clean install of Windows 8, so there's no way Windows is taking that time to do some sort of hibernate on shutdown or whatever - not to mention the error when entering Windows the next time. This happens on every shut down. Restart works as expected. EDIT: Formatting again didn't work. Fails regardless of drivers installed. Event viewer Always these two messages in close succession: Error (event ID 6008): The previous system shutdown at 7:45:21 PM on ?27/?10/?2012 was unexpected. Critical (kernel power, event ID 41): The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

In fact I have four(4) users/extensions in my sip.conf and only one of them (the one I use for business) is supposed to send a different caller id/number. Everything is in the same context (for simplicity) since all lines need to be able to pick up an incoming call. The only difference is when line1 needs to make a call, it has to send a different caller id/number and use a different provider. • How are large companies handling the storing and cataloging of software installation disks?

  I just started working in the IT department of a small-medium sized construction company with about 200 users. One of my responsibilities is to setup and configure all new machines that come in. I would like suggestions on how to best manage the installation disks and licenses of the software that comes with them. Plus any additional licensed software such as Autocad, Photoshop, etc as well as peripheral driver disks such as printers and scanners. Right now every machine is associated and labeled with an asset id. All asset ids are kept in a spreadsheet with applicable serial numbers, current user, warranty info, and software licenses. The physical disks are then kept within a folder in a cabinet. Each folder is marked with the asset id number as well as the current user. My problems with this is that the system was not maintained very completely before I came to the company. There are plenty of software folders with no asset ids labeled on them. Plenty of missing software folders (most likely are a lot of the unlabeled folders). Folders with names but not asset ids. Machines get switched to different users without the folders and spreadsheet being updated. I am not saying this method would necessarily be bad if it was better implemented and managed, but if I am going to have to take a lot of time to fix this system currently in place. I thought I would ask the community first on how others manage this process in case there are easier, more efficient ways of doing so. Thank you.

• Faster caching method

  I have a service that provides HTML code which at some point it is not updated anymore. The code is always generated dynamically from a database with 10 million entries so each HTML code page rendering searches there for say 60 or 70 of those entries and then renders the page. So, for those expired pages, I want to use a caching system which will be VERY simple (like just enter a record with the rendered HTML and (if I need) remove it). I tried to do it file-based but the search for the existence of a file and then passing it through php to actually render it , seems like too much for what I want to do. I was thinking of doing it on mysql with a table with MEDIUMBLOBs (each page is around 100k). It would hold about 150000 such records (for now, at least). My question is: Would it be faster to let mysql do the lookup of the file and the passing to php or is the file-based approach faster? The lookup code for the file based version looks like this: $page = @file_get_contents(getCacheFilename($pageId)); if($page!=NULL) { echo $page; } else { renderAndCachePage($pageId); } which does one lookup whether it finds the file or not. The mysql table would just have an ID (the page id) and the blob entry. The disk of the system is a simple SATA raid 1 , the mysql daemon can grab up to 2.5GB of memory (i have a proxy running too, eating the rest of the 16GB of the machine. ) In general the disk is quite busy already. My not using PEAR cache, is because I think (please feel free to correct me on this) it adds overhead I do not need because the page rendering code is called about 2M times per day and I wouldn't want to go through the whole code each time (and yes, I have eaccelerator to cache the code too). Any pointer to what direction I should go, would be greatly welcome. Thanks!

  I wonder if a modem is required to be programmed when using with an internet provider? If yes, what is the purpose of programming a modem? Do both a DSL and a cable ISP both require a modem to be used in an individual home? For example, I have a Motorola modem SURFboard Model:SB5101, Customer S/N: xxx S/N? xxx HFC MAC ID: xxx USB CPE MAC ID: xxx a coil of cable and a splitter from Comcast High-Speed internet Self-Installation Kit, which were bought 5 years ago, when I purchased Comcast internet service from its retailer www.comcastoffers.com. With them, I was hoping to reduce the amount of fee by avoiding to ask Comcast people to come over to install. But I remember at that time Comcast sent its technician here, dismissed my idea of self-installation, saying they needed to use their own modem and charging me a hefty fee, and so my equipments have never been used. I haven't been using Comcast for a long time. I wonder if my modem, cable and splitter (brand new, never used) are still good to use with an internet provider such as Comcast? If needed, we can ignore their policy and just consider the technology side? Or they are not good to use and I must throw them away like trash? Thanks and regards!

• Can't connect to wi-fi hotspot in Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm new to Ubuntu. I'm having a wireless network problem in Ubuntu 11.10. I made a hotspot using Connectify from a computer which is running Windows 7. I can access it in Windows 7 but not in Ubuntu 11.10. Every time I access it,I get a message "disconnected". I'm using msi fx 400 notebook with Intel Centrino wireless -N 1000 wireless card. • MVC2 EditorTemplate for DropDownList

  I've spent the majority of the past week knee deep in the new templating functionality baked into MVC2. I had a hard time trying to get a DropDownList template working. The biggest problem I've been working to solve is how to get the source data for the drop down list to the template. I saw a lot of examples where you can put the source data in the ViewData dictionary (ViewData["DropDownSourceValuesKey"]) then retrieve them in the template itself (var sourceValues = ViewData["DropDownSourceValuesKey"];) This works, but I did not like having a silly string as the lynch pin for making this work. Below is an approach I've come up with and wanted to get opinions on this approach: here are my design goals: The view model should contain the source data for the drop down list Limit Silly Strings Not use ViewData dictionary Controller is responsible for filling the property with the source data for the drop down list Here's my View Model: public class CustomerViewModel { [ScaffoldColumn(false)] public String CustomerCode{ get; set; } [UIHint("DropDownList")] [DropDownList(DropDownListTargetProperty = "CustomerCode"] [DisplayName("Customer Code")] public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> CustomerCodeList { get; set; } public String FirstName { get; set; } public String LastName { get; set; } public String PhoneNumber { get; set; } public String Address1 { get; set; } public String Address2 { get; set; } public String City { get; set; } public String State { get; set; } public String Zip { get; set; } } My View Model has a CustomerCode property which is a value that the user selects from a list of values. I have a CustomerCodeList property that is a list of possible CustomerCode values and is the source for a drop down list. I've created a DropDownList attribute with a DropDownListTargetProperty. DropDownListTargetProperty points to the property which will be populated based on the user selection from the generated drop down (in this case, the CustomerCode property). Notice that the CustomerCode property has [ScaffoldColumn(false)] which forces the generator to skip the field in the generated output. My DropDownList.ascx file will generate a dropdown list form element with the source data from the CustomerCodeList property. The generated dropdown list will use the value of the DropDownListTargetProperty from the DropDownList attribute as the Id and the Name attributes of the Select form element. So the generated code will look like this: <select id="CustomerCode" name="CustomerCode"> <option>... </select> This works out great because when the form is submitted, MVC will populate the target property with the selected value from the drop down list because the name of the generated dropdown list IS the target property. I kinda visualize it as the CustomerCodeList property is an extension of sorts of the CustomerCode property. I've coupled the source data to the property. • ASP.NET. MVC2. Entity Framework. Cannot pass primary key value back from view to [HttpPost]

  I pass a ViewModel (which contains a "Person" object) from the "EditPerson" controller action into the view. When posted back from the view, the ActionResult receives all of the Person properties except the ID (which it says is zero instead of say its real integer) Can anyone tell me why?
