• What's the compelling reason to upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 from VS2008?

  Are there new features in Visual Studio 2010 that are must-haves? If so, which ones? For me, the big draws for VS2008 as compared to VS2005 were LINQ, .NET Framework multitargeting, WCF (REST + Syndication), and general devenv.exe reliability. Granted, some of these features are framework things, and not tool things. For the purposes of this discussion, I'm willing to combine them into one bucket. What is the list of must-have features for VS2010 versus VS2008? Are there any? I am particularly interested in C#. Update: I know how to google, so I can get the official list from Microsoft. I guess what I really wanted was, the assessment from people using it, as to which things are really notable. Microsoft went on for 3 pages about 2008/3.5 features, and many people sort of boiled it down to LINQ, and a few other things. What is that short list for VS2010? Summary so far, what people think is cool or compelling: Visual Studio engine multi-monitor support new extensibility model based on WPF, prettier and more usable new TFS stuff, incl automated test tools parallel debugging .NET Framework parallel extensions for .NET C# 4.0 generic variance optional and named params easier interop with non-managed environments, like COM or Javascript VB 10.0 collection and array literals / initializers automatic properties anonymous methods / statement lambdas I read up on these at Zander's blog. He described these and other features. • latex padding / margin hell

  hi everyone I have been wrestling with a latex table for far too long. I need a table that has has centered headers, and body cells that contain text that may wrap around. Because of the wrap-around requirement, i'm using p{xxx} instead of l for specifying cell widths. The problem this causes is that cell contents are not left justified, so the look like spaced-out junk. To fix this problem I'm using \flushleft for each cell. This does left justify contents, but puts in a ton of white space above and below the contents of the cell.   I am a relative newbie when it comes to SQL Azure!! I was wondering if there was a definitive list somewhere regarding what is and is not supported by SQL Azure in regards to SQL Server 2008? • mysql: Average over multiple columns in one row, ignoring nulls

  I have a large table (of sites) with several numeric columns - say a through f. (These are site rankings from different organizations, like alexa, google, quantcast, etc. Each has a different range and format; they're straight dumps from the outside DBs.) For many of the records, one or more of these columns is null, because the outside DB doesn't have data for it. They all cover different subsets of my DB. I want column t to be their weighted average (each of a..f have static weights which I assign), ignoring null values (which can occur in any of them), except being null if they're all null. I would prefer to do this with a simple SQL calculation, rather than doing it in app code or using some huge ugly nested if block to handle every permutation of nulls. (Given that I have an increasing number of columns to average over as I add in more outside DB sources, this would be exponentially more ugly and bug-prone.) I'd use AVG but that's only for group by, and this is w/in one record. The data is semantically nullable, and I don't want to average in some "average" value in place of the nulls; I want to only be counting the columns for which data is there. Is there a good way to do this? Ideally, what I want is something like UPDATE sites SET t = AVG(a*a_weight,b*b_weight,...) where any null values are just ignored and no grouping is happening.

• Good mobile oriented GWT widget library alternatives

  I've been developing a travel planning site - tripgrep.com - which is built on appengine, GWT and smartgwt, among other technologies. It is still early days, and the site is now working well on my development environment, which is either a windows or mac computer. However, I am frequently talking up the website to my friends when we are at a bar or other venue, so I am standing there while they try to access the site via an iPhone, Android or Blackberry - I've witnessed all three. It has been painfully obvious that the browser based frontend takes a long time to download on a mobile device. I am pretty sure this is because of the javascript download for SmartGWT. So, I would like to look at alternatives to SmartGWT. What I like about SmartGWT is that it has a reasonable look and feel out of the box - I don't need to learn any design or css and it has an office application look. This is considerably better than the GWT built-in widgets, which just get a blue border. The better look-and-feel is why I went with SmartGWT early on. However, the slow load times are killing me on these mobile demos. So now I want a fast loading widget alternative that has good look-and-feel out of the box. The features I care about are: tabs, good form layout, Google maps API integration, grid data viewing. If those are all available in a library that loads quickly on a mobile device, then that's the library I want.

• Problem with twitter API: cannot update status

  I am trying to create Google Chrome extension that will send interesting links to twitter. But, I am unable to connect to the Twitter. The server gets my request, but the response is always the same: "You do not have permission to access /1/statuses/update.json on this server (403 Forbidden)." I am using Wireshark to inspect Http responses. • Window message procedures in Linux vs Windows

  In Windows when you create a window, you must define a (c++) LRESULT CALLBACK message_proc(HWND Handle, UINT Message, WPARAM WParam, LPARAM LParam); to handle all the messages sent from the OS to the window, like keypresses and such. Im looking to do some reading on how the same system works in Linux. Maybe it is because I fall a bit short on the terminology but I fail to find anything on this through google (although Im sure there must be plenty!). Is it still just one single C function that handles all the communication? Does the function definition differ on different WMs (Gnome, KDE) or is it handled on a lower level in the OS? Edit: Ive looked into tools like QT and WxWidgets, but those frameworks seems to be geared more towards developing GUI extensive applications. Im rather looking for a way to create a basic window (restrict resize, borders/decorations) for my OGL graphics and retrieve input on more than one platform. And according to my initial research, this kind of function is the only way to retrieve that input. What would be the best route? Reading up, learning and then use QT or WxWidgets? Or learning how the systems work and implement those few basic features I want myself?

• Which articles I've should read before starting to make my custom drawn winforms app?

  Hello! I'm currently developing a windows forms application with a lot of user controls. Some of them are just custom drawn buttons or panels and some of them are a compositions of these buttons and panels inside of FlowLayoutPanels and TableLayoutPanels. And the window itself is also custom drawn. I don't have much experience in winforms development, but I've made a proper decomposition of proposed design into user controls and implementation is already almost finished. I've already solved many arisen problems during development by the help of the google, msdn, SO and several dirty hacks (when nothing were helping) and still experiencing some of them. There are a lot of gaps in my knowledge base, since I don't know answers to many questions like: When I should use things like double buffer, suspended layout, suspended redraw ? What should I do with the controls which shouldn't be visible at some moment ? Common performance pitfalls (I think I've fallen in in several ones) ? So I think there should be some great articles which can give some knowledge enough to avoid most common problems and improve performance and maintainability of my application. Maybe some of you can recommend a few?

• Algorithm possible amounts (over)paid for a specific price, based on denominations

  In a current project, people can order goods delivered to their door and choose 'pay on delivery' as a payment option. To make sure the delivery guy has enough change customers are asked to input the amount they will pay (e.g. delivery is 48,13, they will pay with 60,- (3*20,-)). Now, if it were up to me I'd make it a free field, but apparantly higher-ups have decided is should be a selection based on available denominations, without giving amounts that would result in a set of denominations which could be smaller. Example: denominations = [1,2,5,10,20,50] price = 78.12 possibilities: 79 (multitude of options), 80 (e.g. 4*20) 90 (e.g. 50+2*20) 100 (2*50) It's international, so the denominations could change, and the algorithm should be based on that list. The closest I have come which seems to work is this: for all denominations in reversed order (large=>small) add ceil(price/denomination) * denomination to possibles baseprice = floor(price/denomination) * denomination; for all smaller denominations as subdenomination in reversed order add baseprice + (ceil((price - baseprice) / subdenomination) * subdenomination) to possibles end for end for remove doubles sort Is seems to work, but this has emerged after wildly trying all kinds of compact algorithms, and I cannot defend why it works, which could lead to some edge-case / new countries getting wrong options, and it does generate some serious amounts of doubles. As this is probably not a new problem, and Google et al. could not provide me with an answer save for loads of pages calculating how to make exact change, I thought I'd ask SO: have you solved this problem before? Which algorithm? Any proof it will always work?

  Ok, so I made this rookie mistake below, but in my defense I was led to it thanks to how the help about this subject is on python docs, which states how to use optparse. It is actually an error under the gigantic tutorial section. In contrast and to my offense, I may be one of the very few stupid people who can't read very well and pay close attention on what I do. But since this took me so long to discover, I wanted to "document" it here: Python 2.6.1 (r261:67515, Feb 11 2010, 00:51:29) >>> from optparse import OptionParser >>> outputGroup = OptionGroup(parser, 'Output handling') Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> NameError: name 'OptionGroup' is not defined This is strictly done with examples found on the docs, and you can't find anything about it anywhere, be it that long long docs page, google or stackoverflow. Plus, reading optparse.py shows OptionGroup is there, so that adds to the confusion. I bet it will take less than 1 minute for someone to spot my error. For that I'll only add proper tags and / or modify the title later on. :)

Download Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers (190 MB) from http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/ I thought this should be the correct choice, as I see most features are found in that edition http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/compare-packages After struggling a while to get use to the user interface of Eclipse, I still cannot find a Visual GUI Editor! After doing some Googling, I realize I need to install something called Plugins However, tones of plugins which had similar features has confused me, as I found http://www.cloudgarden.com/jigloo/index.html http://www.eclipse.org/vep/WebContent/main.php http://code.google.com/p/visualswing4eclipse/ This makes me even more confuse? Which plugin I should use to develop a Swing based application? Most of them seems not up-to-dated. • Django internationalization for admin pages - translate model name and attributes

  Django's internationalization is very nice (gettext based, LocaleMiddleware), but what is the proper way to translate the model name and the attributes for admin pages? I did not find anything about this in the documentation: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/topics/i18n/internationalization/ http://www.djangobook.com/en/2.0/chapter19/ I would like to have "???????? ????? ??? ?????????" instead of "???????? order ??? ?????????". Note, the 'order' is not translated. First, I defined a model, activated USE_I18N = True in settings.py, run django-admin makemessages -l ru. No entries are created by default for model names and attributes. Grepping in the Django source code I found: $ ack "Select %s to change" contrib/admin/views/main.py 70: self.title = (self.is_popup and ugettext('Select %s') % force_unicode(self.opts.verbose_name) or ugettext('Select %s to change') % force_unicode(self.opts.verbose_name)) So the verbose_name meta property seems to play some role here. Tried to use it: class Order(models.Model): subject = models.CharField(max_length=150) description = models.TextField() class Meta: verbose_name = _('order') Now the updated po file contains msgid 'order' that can be translated. So I put the translation in. Unfortunately running the admin pages show the same mix of "???????? order ??? ?????????". I'm currently using Django 1.1.1. I made a build an copied it to the IIS Folder. In the IDE (VS2008) all works fine :(. This worked a long time. But know i get a error for my included dll of a other project. • How to verify the SSL connection when calling a URI?

  Hello, I am developing a web application that is authenticated using CAS (A single-sign-on solution: http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/CAS/Home). For security reasons, I need two things to work: The communication between CAS and my application needs to be secure My application needs to accept the certification coming from CAS, so that I can guarantee that the CAS responding is the real CAS server This is what I got so far: uri = URI.parse("https://www.google.com/accounts") https = Net::HTTP.new(uri.host, uri.port) https.use_ssl = (uri.scheme == 'https') https.verify_mode = (OpenSSL::SSL::VERIFY_PEER) raw_res = https.start do |conn| conn.get("#{uri.path}?#{uri.query}") end This works just great in Mac OS X. When I try to reach an insecure URI, it raises an exception, and when I try to reach a secure URI, it allows me normally, just like expected. The problem starts when I deploy my application on my Linux server. I tried in both Ubuntu and Red Hat. Independent of what URI I try to reach, it always raises this exception: OpenSSL::SSL::SSLError: SSL_connect returned=1 errno=0 state=SSLv3 read server certificate B: certificate verify failed from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:586:in `connect' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:586:in `connect' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:553:in `do_start' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:542:in `start' from (irb):7 I think this have something to do with my installed OpenSSL package, but I can't be sure. This are my installed OpenSSL packages: openssl.x86_64 0.9.8e-12.el5 installed openssl-devel.x86_64 0.9.8e-12.el5 installed I tried using HTTParty as well, but it just ignores the SSL certificate. I hope someone can help me, or tell me about a gem that works the way I need. Thanks.

• Getting Started with Ruby & Ruby on Rails

  Some background: I'm a jack-of-all traits, one of which is programming. I learned VB6 through Excel and PHP for creating websites and so far it's worked out just fine for me. I'm not CS major or even mathematically inclined - logic is what interests me. Current status: I'm willing to learn new and more powerful languages; my first foray into such a route is learning Ruby. I went to the main Ruby website and did the interactive intro. (by the way, I'm currently getting redirected to google.com when I try the link...it's happening to other websites as well...is my computer infected?) I liked what I learned and wanted to get started using Ruby to create websites. I downloaded InstantRails and installed it; everything so far has been fine - the program starts up just fine, and I can test some Ruby code in the console. However my troubles begin when I try and view a web page with Ruby code present. Lastly, my problem: As in PHP, I can browse to the .php file directly and through using PHP tags and some simple 'echo' statements I can be on my way in making dynamic web pages. However with the InstantRails app working, accessing a .rb or .rhtml page doesn't produce similar results. I made a simple text file named 'test.rb' and put basic HTML tags in there (html, head, body) and the Ruby tags <%= and % with some ruby code inside. The web page actually shows the tags and the code - as if it's all just plain HTML. I take it Ruby isn't parsing the page before it is displayed to the user, but this is where my lack of understanding of the Ruby environment stops me short. Where do I go from here?

• Can't override "From" address in MailMessage class using .config login credentials

  I'm updating some existing code that sends a simple email using .Net's SMTP classes. Sample code is below. The SMTP host is google and login info is contained in the App.config as shown below (obviously not real login info :)). The problem I'm having, and I haven't been able to find any answers Googling, is that I can NOT override the display of the "from" email address that's contained in the "username" attribute off the Network element in the config in the delivered email. In the line below that explicitly sets the From property off the myMailMessage object, that value, "[email protected]" does NOT display when the email is received. It still shows as "[email protected]" from the Network tag. However, the From name "Sparky" does appear in the email. I've tried adding a custom "From" header to the Header property of the myMailMessage but that didn't work either. Is there anyway to login to the smtp server, as shown below using the Network tag credentials, but in the actual email received override the From email address that's displayed?   whenever user drag any file onto skype chat textbox then skype show right icon for that file and one custom progress bar rounded corner. i have 4 questions 1) i am working with win application not WPF. i like to know how to develop skype like corner progressbar. i search lot google to find out skype like progressbar. so if anyone knows how to develop that kind of progress bar then please share that knowledge or give me any url from where i can download similar look progressbar. 2) when i drag any file onto my richtextbox then how could i show right icon for that file on my richtextbox. anyone can give me idea. 3) what kind of richtextbox skype use? is there any advance richtextbox library which i can use for showing picture or button etc. 4) skype shows button on chat textbox called Cancel......is it button or any image. when user click on that button then button respond accordingly. so just tell me how could place any button on my rich textbox and when i will click on that button then a event should fire at my end. any idea. here i attach a picture from where you can see the image of progressbar that i am looking for. how i want to show the progress button and file associated icon on richtextbox. the object behind attaching the image is other person can understand what is my requirement and what i want to know. please anyone give me the idea for my above 4 points. thanks

• How do I Extend Blogengine.Net to collect statistics of visitors?

  I love BlogEngine. But from what I can se it does not collect the standard information about the visitors I would like to see (referrer, browser-type and so on). When I log in as Admin I have a menu item named "Referrer". I can choose a weekday and then I'll be presented with 1 or 2 rows with "google.com 4 hits, "itmaskinen.se 6 hits" and so on, But that's not what I want to se, I want to se where my visitors come from, country, IP if possible, how many visitors and so on. If someone of you are familiar with Blogengine.Net and can point me in the right direction to where I would put my own log-code or if you know any visitor-statistic-extension that can do it for me, I would be really happy to know. I prefer an extension, because if I make changes myself to BlogEngine it may break later updates I install. (A quick google search brings up "Creedence Clearwater Revival" as the top result!) Some of the resources I have found: Free e-book chapter from WROX on the Robotics Developer Studio Good Article/post on InfoQ Robotic's Member blog Very active MSDN CCR Forum - Got plenty of help from here! Great MSDN Magazine by Jeffrey Richter Official CCR User Guide - Didn't find this very helpful Great blogging series on CCR iodyner CCR Related Blog - Update: Moved to here Eight or so Videos on Channel9.msdn.com CCR Patterns page on MS Robotics Studio - I haven't read this yet 4 x CCR Questions on Stackoverflow - Most of the questions have been Mine! LOL CCR and DSS toolkit has now been released to MSDN Members Do you have any good learning resources for the CCR? I really hope that Microsoft will publish more material, so far it has been too Robotics specific. I believe that MS needs to acknowledge that most people are using the CCR in issolation from the DSS and Robotics Studio. Update The Mix 2010 conference had a presentation by Myspace about how they have used the CCR framework in their middle tier. They also open sourced the code base. • How to get rid of Internet Explorer 7 reloading on fragment change

  I have an anchor <a href="#!admin">General</a> somewhere in my page. Clicking this in any browser but IE7 (haven't tried IE6) causes no page reload, as expected. However, under IE7 it reloads the page as soon as it's clicked. The strangest thing is that I have the exact same anchor elsewhere in the page and it causes no reload. The only difference I can see between these is a slight difference in style, and the fact that the faulty anchor is deeply nested in divs, where the other is closer to the top. My questions: Is this a known bug with IE7? If so, is there any work around? If not, any clue as to what might be going wrong? Edit: If you want to see this yourself, go to http://filouguestbook.appspot.com/#!main sign-in with a google account and click on the Settings link the the top bar. Switch between the General and Accounts pages, the app will reload. From the Accounts page, click on Settings in the top bar, this will switch tab but not reload!
