  • Android calculator with button click

    - by rynwtts
I am trying to calculate a field named lblAnswer by adding values txtA + txtB. I am fairly new to the android development world and would like to know what is the best way of going about this. I have already added the necessarily edit fields to the GUI. I am now working in the java file to try and create the method. This method has been named doCalc. Here is what I have thus far. public void doCalc() { lblAnswer = txtA + txtB; } It has been suggested that I add more code here is the full code. Thank you for that suggestion. Here is the Java File. package com.example.wattsprofessional; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.Menu; public class MainActivity extends Activity { @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); } @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { // Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present. getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.activity_main, menu); return true; } public void doCalc() { lblAnswer = txtA + txtB; Double.parseDouble(txtA.getText().toString()); lblAnswer.setText"t } and here is the xml file. <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" tools:context=".MainActivity" > <EditText android:id="@+id/txtA" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" android:layout_marginTop="40dp" android:ems="10" android:hint="Write Here" android:inputType="numberDecimal" > <requestFocus /> </EditText> <EditText android:id="@+id/txtB" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignLeft="@+id/txtA" android:layout_below="@+id/txtA" android:layout_marginTop="32dp" android:ems="10" android:hint="Second Here" android:inputType="numberDecimal" /> <Button android:id="@+id/button1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" android:layout_centerVertical="true" android:text="@string/calculate" android:onClick="doCalc"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/lblAnswer" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="@+id/button1" android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" android:layout_marginTop="50dp" android:text="TextView" /> </RelativeLayout>

  • Android emulator and arduino mega 2560

    - by linuxuser
I do not have a Android phone yet. But i wanted to do proof of concept making arduino board + USB host shield work with Android emulator. Problem is pc takes only USB-A, so I decided to use USB - serial - serial USB and connect between Arduino USB shield and PC (Andoid emulator). Everything is set up including ADK, DemoKit Java application, firmware for Arduino. However, Demokit does not recognize as the device connected. So is there any workaround to this?

  • Review - Professional Android Programming with Mono for Android and .NET/C#

    - by Wallym
Mike Riley of Dev Pro Connections Magazine has a review of our Mono for Android book.  You can read the full review on their siteMono for Android has been available for more than a year. The documentation for the product is adequate and has been improving over time, but until recently, finding a good book about the technology was difficult. Such a constraint has been lifted thanks to Wiley's Professional Android Programming with Mono for Android and .NET/C#. Written under the Wrox imprint by several contributors (Wallace B. McClure, Nathan Blevins, John J. Croft, Jonathan Dick, and Chris Hardy), the book is one of the most comprehensive and helpful Mono for Android titles currently on the market. Please buy 8-10 copies of our book for the ones you love, they make great romantic gifts.

  • ListView items not responding to tap

    - by Justin Williams
    I'm just getting my feet wet with Android and have built a UI that contains a TabHost with three tabs. Each tab is powered by its own Activity. The first Tab contains a listview with a prepopulated set of rows and is built from a custom ArrayAdapter. The problem I'm running into is that none of the ListView rows are tappable. In other words, when I tap on them there is no orange selection. If I use the scroll ball on my Nexus One it will select, but any touch gestures don't seem to be responding. All the UI is being handled using XML files with a main.xml housing the TabHost - LinearLayout - TabWidget/FrameLayout and a nearby_activity.xml file containing my ListView UI <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <TextView android:id="@+id/android:empty" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:text="@string/nearby_no_events" /> <ListView android:id="@android:id/list" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1.0" android:choiceMode="multipleChoice" android:divider="#d9d9d9" android:dividerHeight="1px" android:cacheColorHint="#eee" /> </LinearLayout> And the relevant code from my Activity that is set to show in the selected tab. public class NearbyActivity extends ListActivity { private ArrayList<Event> m_events = null; private EventAdapter m_adapter = null; public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.nearby_activity); getEvents(); this.m_adapter = new EventAdapter(this, R.layout.eventrow, m_events); setListAdapter(this.m_adapter); } private void getEvents() { m_events = new ArrayList<Event>(); for (int i = 0; i < 100 ; i++) { Event e = new Event(); e.setEventName("Event " + i); e.setVenueName("Staples Center"); e.setStartDate(new Date()); m_events.add(e); } } private class EventAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<Event> { private ArrayList<Event> items; public EventAdapter(Context context, int textViewResourceId, ArrayList<Event> items) { super(context, textViewResourceId, items); this.items = items; } @Override public View getView (int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View v = convertView; if (v == null) { LayoutInflater vi = (LayoutInflater)getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE); v = vi.inflate(R.layout.eventrow, null); } Event e = items.get(position); if (e != null) { TextView nameText = (TextView)v.findViewById(R.id.eventName); TextView venueNameText = (TextView)v.findViewById(R.id.venueName); if (nameText != null) { nameText.setText(e.getEventName()); } if(venueNameText != null) { venueNameText.setText(e.getVenueName()); } } return v; } } } My listview row's are populated by an XML file as well. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight" android:orientation="vertical" android:padding="4dip"> <TextView android:id="@+id/eventName" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:inputType="text" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="marquee" android:textSize="18sp" android:textColor="#000" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/venueName" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="@id/eventName" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:layout_marginRight="55dip" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="end" android:scrollHorizontally="true" android:textSize="13sp" android:textColor="#313131" android:layout_alignWithParentIfMissing="true" android:gravity="center_vertical" /> </RelativeLayout> Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • "Class ref in pre-verified class resolved to unexpected implementation" when running android tests i

    - by Mike
I have a module that builds an app called MyApp. I have another that builds some testcases for that app, called MyAppTests. They both build their own APKs, and they both work fine from within my IDE. I'd like to build them using ant so that I can take advantage of continuous integration. Building the app module works fine. I'm having difficulty getting the Test module to compile and run. Using Christopher's tip from a previous question, I used android create test-project -p MyAppTests -m ../MyApp -n MyAppTests to create the necessary build files to build and run my test project. This seems to work great (once I remove an unnecessary test case that it constructed for me and revert my AndroidManifest.xml to the one I was using before it got replaced by android create), but I have two problems. The first problem: The project doesn't compile because it's missing libraries. $ ant run-tests Buildfile: build.xml [setup] Project Target: Google APIs [setup] Vendor: Google Inc. I have managed to set up a tabbed view for my app (woo!) and have the following xml for the UI <TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@android:id/tabhost" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"> <LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:padding="5dp"> <TabWidget android:id="@android:id/tabs" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> <FrameLayout android:id="@android:id/tabcontent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" /> </LinearLayout> <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <Spinner android:id="@+id/areaSpinner" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="@dimen/one_row" /> <Spinner android:id="@+id/cragSpinner" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="@dimen/one_row" /> <Spinner android:id="@+id/routeSpinner" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="@dimen/one_row" /> <DatePicker android:id="@+id/dateClimbed" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> <Spinner android:id="@+id/styleSpinner" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="@dimen/one_row" /> <Spinner android:id="@+id/detailsSpinner" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="@dimen/one_row" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/climbNotes" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="@dimen/three_row" /> </LinearLayout> yet am seemingly unable to scroll down to see the rest of the form (cuts off at one of the spinners, why is this? and how do i fix it?

  • Ellipsize not working for textView inside custom listView

    - by aspartame
    Hi, I have a listView with custom objects defined by the xml-layout below. I want the textView with id "info" to be ellipsized on a single line, and I've tried using the attributes android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="end" without success. If I set the layout_width to a fixed width like e.g. android:layout_width="100px" the text is truncated fine. But for portability reasons this is not an acceptable solution. Can you spot the problem? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:paddingBottom="5px" > <TextView android:id="@+id/destination" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="22dp" android:paddingLeft="5px" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/date" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="15dp" android:paddingLeft="5px" /> <TableLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/info_table" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:paddingLeft="5px" android:paddingTop="10px" > <TableRow> <TextView android:id="@+id/driver_label" android:gravity="right" android:paddingRight="5px" android:text="@string/driver_label" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/driver" /> </TableRow> <TableRow> <TextView android:id="@+id/passenger_label" android:gravity="right" android:paddingRight="5px" android:text="@string/passenger_label" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/passengers" /> </TableRow> <TableRow> <TextView android:id="@+id/info_label" android:gravity="right" android:paddingRight="5px" android:text="@string/info_label"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/info" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="end" /> </TableRow> </TableLayout>

  • How to ellipsize center-aligned textview beside a right-aligned button when screen width is small

    - by simplymoody
    ------------------------------------ | LONG_TITL... |button| | |------------------------------------| | | I have an app header which consists of the app title and a button. The button should be fixed on the right side but I want the title to be in the middle and ellipsize when the screen is too small. Problem is the title just won't ellipsize even though the button is nearly beside it. Here's what I have so far: <RelativeLayout android:id="@+id/headr" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:gravity="center"> <ImageView android:id="@+id/bar_orange" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:minHeight="40dp" android:scaleType="centerCrop" android:src="@drawable/bar_orange"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/Title" android:layout_marginLeft="20dp" android:layout_marginRight="20dp" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_centerInParent="true" android:gravity="center" android:text="@string/bcd" android:textColor="#FFFFFF" android:ellipsize="marquee" android:singleLine="true" android:textSize="18sp" android:textStyle="bold"/> <Button android:padding="5dp" android:id="@+id/home" android:textColor="#ffffff" android:layout_marginRight="10dp" android:layout_marginLeft="10dp" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentRight="true" android:layout_centerVertical="true" android:singleLine="true" android:background="@drawable/button_home" android:text="@string/home"/> </RelativeLayout> Is there a way to do this with just RelativeLayout?

Here's my AndroidManifest.xml is there a problem in here? Or is there something else I should be looking at? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" package="com.sbe.app.hellocogen" android:versionCode="1" android:versionName="1.0"> <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" /> <application android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name"> <activity android:name=".activity.ListPlants" android:label="@string/app_name"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity> <activity android:name=".activity.AddPlant" android:label="Add Plant"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW"/> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"/> </intent-filter> </activity> <activity android:name=".activity.UnitActivity" android:label="IP HERE, PLANT NAME"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW"/> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"/> </intent-filter> </activity> </application> <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="4"/> </manifest> When I started this application it didn't show up but I fixed it by setting the minimum api level to 4 instead of 7 then it started showing up but now it stopped showing up again and I don't know why.

  • Android -Layout Manager not showing buttons

    - by Arun
The following is my code. I want an interface where I have a single line textbox, a multiline textbox with 2 buttons below. I want the multiline textbox to occupy all the space available after rendering the buttons and textbox. For this I created two LinearLayouts inside the main layout. The first one has vertical orientation with layout_width set to fill_parent. The second one is horizontal with fill_parent again. The first one has a textbox for which I have set the layout_height to fill parent. The second one has two textboxes OK and Cancel. When I run this application I get the UI, but the Buttons are very small. I have to set the button height manually. What am I doing wrong here. • How to switch between views in android?

    - by aurezza
I've tried several methods to switch between two views in my program. I've tried creating a new thread then have the view run for 5 seconds before creating intent to start my main activity. This is the code snippet from the said view class: mHelpThread = new Thread(){ @Override public void run(){ try { synchronized(this){ // Wait given period of time or exit on touch wait(5000); } } catch(InterruptedException ex){ } finish(); // Run next activity Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MAIN, null); intent.addCategory(Intent.CATEGORY_HOME); startActivity(intent); //stop(); } }; mHelpThread.start(); I can access the said view without error but it doesn't disappear after 5 seconds nor did it switched to main view when I even utilized an onTouchEvent() to detect touch on the screen of which it should have automatically closed. I've also tried adding a button on the said view to manually switch to main view: @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.help); final HelpView helpView = this; final Button btnback = (Button) findViewById(R.id.back); btnback.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener(){ public void onClick(View v) { Intent intent = new Intent(helpView, MainActivity.class); startActivity(intent); } }); } These codes worked, though, for creating a launcher for my program. So I thought that it would work the same if I added an option for help/rules(for the game) that would switch to another view. I've only since started using eclipse for android so pardon my lack of knowledge. Here is also the snippet from my manifest: <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="11" android:targetSdkVersion="15" /> <application android:icon="@drawable/ic_launcher" android:label="@string/app_name" android:theme="@style/AppTheme" > <activity android:name="MainActivity" android:label="@string/title_activity_main"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"/> </intent-filter> <intent-filter></intent-filter> </activity> <activity android:name="SplashScreen" android:theme="@style/Theme.Transparent"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN"/> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER"/> </intent-filter> </activity> <activity android:name="HelpView" android:theme="@style/Theme.Transparent"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN"/> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"/> </intent-filter> <intent-filter></intent-filter> </activity> </application>

If I run several emulators with -no-window option in one machine. The command "adb devices" shows: List of devices attached emulator-5554 device emulator-5556 device emulator-5558 device ... However, according to this output, I can't tell the difference between each emulator device at all. I need to know which emulator runs on what AVD, then I can install APKs or send commands to the emulator. How can I recognize each emulator device or get the serial number of emulator after it runs?

  • How to make an Android UI with images from a designer delivered as layers

    - by Not Me
I hired a designer to help me redesign the UI for my Android app. For each Activity he gave me an image for the background, which includes any static content like fancy frames for text content; plus images for the buttons, which must fit in to the background image in exact places, to fit into the frames in the background image. However, since Android devices have different screen sizes and aspect ratios, it's easy to fit the background image by itself with android:scaleType="centerInside", but how can I get all the other images to fit in with background exactly, to the pixel? If they didn't have to fit in with the background, I would just set the exact width and height for each ImageButton, but depending on how the background scales (based on the screen size and ratio) they might end up not aligned correctly. Thank you very much in advance.

  • Example: Communication between Activity and Service using Messaging

    - by Lance Lefebure
I couldn't find any examples of how to send messages between an activity and a service, and spent far too many hours figuring this out. Here is an example project for others to reference. This example allows you to start or stop a service directly, and separately bind/unbind from the service. When the service is running, it increments a number at 10Hz. If the activity is bound to the service, it will display the current value. Data is transferred as an Integer and as a String so you can see how to do that two different ways. There are also buttons in the activity to send messages to the service (changes the increment-by value). • Android RadioButton like Behaviour

    - by monxalo
    Greetings, I'm trying to create a single-choice android control, in a horizontal layout, by making use of the RadioGroup behaviour. I can assign the drawable just fine, but i would like to position the label of each RadioButton inside the drawable, is this possible using the standard APIs? <RadioGroup android:id="@+id/switchcontainer" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="horizontal" android:checkedButton="@+id/RadioButton02" android:padding="3dip"> <RadioButton android:text="id RadioButton02" android:id="@+id/RadioButton02" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:button="@drawable/radio_button" android:paddingRight="2dip" /> <RadioButton android:text="@+id/RadioButton03" android:id="@+id/RadioButton03" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:button="@drawable/radio_button" android:paddingRight="2dip" />> </RadioGroup>

  • Easiest way to implement RSS reader on Google Android?

    - by user291888
Hi guys, This is my first time on stack overflow, so I apologize if this question has been asked before, but is there an easy way to implement an RSS reader on the Google Android (API 1.5)? I'm searched far and wide with the code sources I know of, and I've only found one implementation which takes 6 different classes and doesn't seem to compile on the current Android SDK's. If I end up having to write my own, I'll be sure to post it here later on. Thanks a lot.
