  • Set up a root server using Ubuntu and Virtualization

    Hello, I'd like to setup a fresh root server and install a linux based virtualization on it. My thoughts are on: Intel VTs Hardware Ubuntu 9.10 KVM based virt. The access to the root server will only be SSH for Administration. Has anybody done this before, what was your glues discovered in the daily use? My requirements are: very secure, so the root server only has ssh to the dom-0 and minimalistic ports for the guest (e.g. http/s). good monitoring of host/guest (my idea is to using zabbix for it) easy and fast administration (how are the command line tools working for you? cryptiv? high learning curve?)   • Can I change a MySQL table back and forth between InnoDB and MyISAM without any problems?

    I have a site with a decently big database, 3Gb in size, a couple of tables with a dozen million records. It's currently 100% on MyISAM, and I have the feeling that the server is going slower than it should because of too much locking, so I'd like to try going to InnoDB and see if that makes things better. However, I need to do that directly in production, because obviously without load this doesn't make any difference. However, I'm a bit worried about this, because InnoDB actually has potential to be slower, so the question is: If I convert all tables to InnoDB and it turns out i'm worse off than before, can I go back to MyISAM without losing anything? Can you think of any problems I might encounter? (For example, I know that InnoDB stores all data in ONE big file that only gets bigger, can this be a problem?) Thank you very much Daniel

  • Tuning OpenVZ Containers to work better with Java?

    I have a 8 GB RAM Server (Dedicated) and currently have KVM Virtual Machines running on there (successfully) however i'm considering moving to OpenVZ as KVM seems a bit overkill with a lot of overhead for what i use it for. In the past i have used OpenVZ Containers, hosted by myself and from other providers and Java doesn't seem to work well with them.. One example is that if i give a container 2 GB RAM ( No burst) (with or without vswap doesn't matter) a java instance can only be tuned to use at very most 1500 MB of that RAM (-Xmx, -Xms). Ideally, i wish to be able to create "Mini" containers with about 256MB, 512MB, 768 RAM and run some java instances in them. My question is: I'm trying to find an ideal way to tune a OpenVZ container configuration to work better with Java memory. Please, don't suggest anything related to Java settings, i'm looking for OpenVZ specific answers.. Though i welcome any suggestion if you feel it may help me. Much Appreciated, Daniel

  • Server 2008 locks me out when not using the machine for 10 minutes after installing SP2

    I have recently installed Service Pack 2 on my Windows Server 2008 machine (which I use actively for development, and i'm always logged on to). Now, after this installation, when I don't use the machine for some time (let's say, 10 minutes), it locks itself so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del and log back in. I have already checked the Screen Saver settings, and it's "None", as it always has been. I also looked into power settings and everything looks right (20 mins to turn off monitor, and i haven't found any settings regarding locking me in there). Do you have any idea what I can do so that it won't lock me out after not using the machine for a while? Thanks! Daniel

  • Finding day of week in batch file? (Windows Server 2008)

    I have a process I run from a batch file, and i only want to run it on a certain day of the week. Is it possible to get the day of week? All the example I found, somehow rely on "date /t" to return "Friday, 12/11/2009", however, in my machine, "date /t" returns "12/11/2009". No weekday there. I've already checked the "regional settings" for my machine, and the long date format does include the weekday. The short date format doesn't, but i'd really rather not change that, since it'll affect a bunch of stuff I do. Any ideas here? Thanks! Daniel

  • Iphone SDK dismissing Modal ViewControllers on ipad by clicking outside of it

    Hello, I want to dismiss a FormSheetPresentation modal view controller when the user taps outside the modal view...I have seen a bunch of apps doing this (ebay on ipad for example) but i cant figure out how since the underneath views are disabled from touches when modal views are displayed like this (are they presenting it as a popover perhaps?)...anyone have any suggestions?     I have the following data in my database: MemberID | DateTime ------------------------------------- 1 | 31/03/2010 3:45:49 PM 2 | 31/03/2010 3:55:29 PM 1 | 31/03/2010 4:45:49 PM Every time a user is authenticated or un-authenticated this log appears in the database. What I want to be able to do is total the time for a given user and date. Member 1 was online for 1 hour and 37 minutes.     Hi all, A fellow developer on a project I am on believes that doctests are as good as unit-tests, and that if a piece of code is doctested, it does not need to be unit-tested. I do not believe this to be the case. Can anyone provide some solid, ideally cited, examples either for or against the argument that doctests do not replace the need for unit-tests?   • CakePHP: Can I ignore a field when reading the Model from the DB?

    In one of my models, I have a "LONGTEXT" field that has a big dump of a bunch of stuff that I never care to read, and it slows things down, since I'm moving much more data between the DB and the web app. Is there a way to specify in the model that I want CakePHP to simply ignore that field, and never read it or do anything with it? I really want to avoid the hassle of creating a separate table and a separate model, only for this field. Thanks! Daniel

    Hi, I'm trying to read data from a webpage, and I have to do it using JAVA. When I try to do it in Eclipse using JAVA i'm getting time out error: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect (Using HttpURLConnection) In order to understand where is the problem I tried doing the same task using c# and VS2008, and it worked perfectly fine, no time out at all.     Anyone have experience of using the JoinDomainOrWorkgroup Method of the Win32_ComputerSystem Class? I want to write a powershell script to join a machine to a domain. There may be an existing computer account for the machine, and if so I want to delete it and rejoin to the domain. I've already scripted the "search and destroy" part that will delete the computer account if it exists, but just noticed the FJoinOptions switches on Technet. Trouble is - they're a bit ambiguous. Does 4 (0x4) Deletes an account when a domain exists. mean it will delete the computer account if it already exists on the domain? Also, can you specify the computername you want to join the machine under with this method, or should you do a rename and then join the domain.   • How to recertify Notes .id file if you can't get into Notes Admin

    I've got a bit of a catch-22 situation here. My company used to use Notes, but migrated to Exchange several years ago. As such the Notes server was mothballed. I now need to get back into Notes to get some data from an old app we had. The trouble is, all my .id files have expired. I can't recertify them, as I can't log into Notes Admin - because the .id has expired. Is there any way round this? Thanks, Ben

    I am writing an application which reacts to emails sent to a mailbox. It retrieves the emails via IMAP. It will be deployed to a number of systems where I do not control the mail server configuration. I would like to use IMAP flags to indicate which messages have been handled. Are the system flags sufficiently widely supported that I can reasonably depend on them in my application? Are user-defined flags sufficiently widely supported?   • Specify Credentials to run Powershell Script to Query AD

    I want to run a powershell script to query AD from a machine that is NOT on the domain. Basically I want to query to see if there is computer account already on the domain for this machine and create it if there is not. Because this has to happen before the machine joins the domain I assume I will need to specify some credentials to enable it to run. (I'm pretty new to Powershell, so apologies if this is a newbie question!) The script I am using to check the account is below, and then once this has run it will join the domain using the computername specified. Can you tell me how to specify some domain credentials to run this section of the script as?   • What is causing my newly built PC with Windows 7 to BSOD?

    I recently built my own PC from parts and installed Windows 7 and I have been getting BSODs with various different stop codes. The latest was 0x24, but I've also had 0xd1 and 0x1e. However, Windows does not let me know where the fault occurred, so I have no idea how to go about resolving this. I know the cause is likely a hardware driver, but I don't know which and cannot find information about how to use the minidumps to troubleshoot my problem. I've uploaded the last three minidumps in case someone can make sense out of them and let me know what could be causing my BSODs. Thanks, Ben

  • Can I port forward to an established reverse ssh tunnel

    I have three computers, A, B and C A has initiated a reverse ssh tunnel to B: ssh -nTNx -p 443 -R 22222:localhost:22 [user]@[server] If I log in to B, I can use 'ssh -p 22222 localhost' and I get a login prompt for A. If I try 'ssh -p 22222 [public IP of B]', it doesn't work What I would like to be able to do is have C connect to A without needing to login to B. So from C I could 'ssh -p 22222 [public IP of B]' and I would get the login prompt for A. I am using debian and shorewall and I have a basic understanding of how things work. I have tried various combinations of REDIRECT and DNAT rules, but haven't had any luck. I have tried using the same port (22222) and a different port (forwarding 22223 from C to 22222 on localhost).   • Exchange 2013 Virtual Machine: Backup just mailboxes and clear logs

    I have a Windows Server 2012 machine running Exchange 2013 running as a KVM virtual machine. For my VM guests, I do full image based backups from the host, so that I can quickly restore to any host server simply by copying over the disk image files. This means I don't need a nightly full system backup. That being said, without running a VSS Full Backup, the Exchange logs get massive (Specifically, the performance logs which are 500MB a day). In addition, I would also like to have a nightly backup of just the mail database. What is the best way to accomplish this? A full backup of the C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15 folder as I found in one tutorial did not clear out the logs. Thanks, Ben
