  • Sharing an internet connection through the Ethernet port

    - by Bob Cunningham
I have a small living room PC (Bohica, running fully-updated Ubuntu 10.10/Maverick) connected to my HDTV that I use for web browsing and media streaming. It connects via WiFi (wlan0) to my Fedora server (Snafu) that in turn connects to the internet. I use static addressing, and everything has been working fine. I just got a Blu-ray player, and I'd like to give it wired network access to the internet via Bohica's available wired ethernet port (eth0). So far, I haven't been to get eth0 and the network configured to get the Blu-ray player talking to the internet. Here's my wlan0 configuration: ip4 addr: 192.168.0.100 mask: /24 (255.255.255.0) gateway: 192.168.0.4 (fedora box) The Blu-ray player is set to an IP of 192.168.0.98/24, with the same gateway as above. I want eth0 set to an IP of 192.168.0.99/24, but when I do this using nm-connection-editor I lose internet access (the system tries to use eth0 as the default internet access interface). How do I get my blu-ray player to talk to the internet through Bohica, and do so without disrupting my current (working) network? Thanks. Edit: Here's the relevant output from nm-tool with the Blu-ray player connected: $ nm-tool NetworkManager Tool State: connected - Device: eth0 Type: Wired Driver: forcedeth State: disconnected Default: no HW Address: 90:FB:A6:2C:94:32 Capabilities: Carrier Detect: yes Speed: 100 Mb/s Wired Properties Carrier: on - Device: wlan0 [wlan0] Type: 802.11 WiFi Driver: ndiswrapper State: connected Default: yes HW Address: 00:26:5A:C0:D0:05 IPv4 Settings: Address: 192.168.0.100 Prefix: 24 (255.255.255.0) Gateway: 192.168.0.4

  • How can I force all internet traffic over a PPTP VPN but still allow local lan access?

    - by user126715
    I have a server running Linux Mint 12 that I want to keep connected to a PPTP VPN all the time. The VPN server is pretty reliable, but it drops on occasion so I just want to make it so all internet activity is disabled if the VPN connection is broken. I'd also like to figure out a way to restart it automatically, but that's not as big of an issue since this happens pretty rarely. I also want to always be able to connect to the box from my lan, regardless of whether the VPN is up or not. Here's what my ifconfig looks like with the VPN connected properly: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:22:15:21:59:9a inet addr:192.168.0.171 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::222:15ff:fe21:599a/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:37389 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:29028 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:37781384 (37.7 MB) TX bytes:19281394 (19.2 MB) Interrupt:41 Base address:0x8000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:1446 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1446 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:472178 (472.1 KB) TX bytes:472178 (472.1 KB) tun0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:10.10.11.10 P-t-P:10.10.11.9 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:14 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:23 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:1368 (1.3 KB) TX bytes:1812 (1.8 KB) Here's an iptables script I found elsewhere that seemed to be for the problem I'm trying to solve, but it wound up blocking all access, but I'm not sure what I need to change: #!/bin/bash #Set variables IPT=/sbin/iptables VPN=`ifconfig|perl -nE'/dr:(\S+)/&&say$1'|grep 10.` LAN=192.168.0.0/24 #Flush rules $IPT -F $IPT -X #Default policies and define chains $IPT -P OUTPUT DROP $IPT -P INPUT DROP $IPT -P FORWARD DROP #Allow input from LAN and tun0 ONLY $IPT -A INPUT -m conntrack --ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT $IPT -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT $IPT -A INPUT -i tun0 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW -j ACCEPT $IPT -A INPUT -s $LAN -m conntrack --ctstate NEW -j ACCEPT $IPT -A INPUT -j DROP #Allow output from lo and tun0 ONLY $IPT -A OUTPUT -m conntrack --ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT $IPT -A OUTPUT -o lo -j ACCEPT $IPT -A OUTPUT -o tun0 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW -j ACCEPT $IPT -A OUTPUT -d $VPN -m conntrack --ctstate NEW -j ACCEPT $IPT -A OUTPUT -j DROP exit 0 Thanks for your help.

I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my laptop, it connects to my wireless network and shows that it is connected, but when I try to load a webpage or do anything like download Steam for Dota 2, it doesn't work. When I try to connect my Facebook account to Ubuntu, it doesn't work. I want to be able to use Ubuntu with working internet access. What do I do?. ifconfig this shows up eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 88:ae:1d:60:56:eb inet addr:192.168.1.13 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) Interrupt:16 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:24 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:24 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:1856 (1.8 KB) TX bytes:1856 (1.8 KB) When I type ping askubuntu.com this shows up ping: unknown host askubuntu.com

  • Static IP Address on Ubuntu 12.04 Virtual Machine

    - by chrisnankervis
I've setup a VM running Ubuntu 12.04 specifically for local web development and am having some problems ensuring it has a static IP address. A static IP address is important as I'm using the IP address in my hosts file to assign a .local suffix to addresses used both in browser and to connect to the correct database on the VM. Currently, every time I connect to a new network or my VM is assigned a new IP address I need to reconfigure my whole environment which is becoming quite a pain. It also probably doesn't help that the default-lease-time on the Ubuntu VM is set to 1800 by default. At the moment I'm using VMWare Fusion and the Network Adapter is enabled and set to "Autodetect" under Bridged Networking. I've tried to set a static IP address within the dhcpd.conf using the code below: host ubuntu { hardware ethernet 00:50:56:35:0f:f1; fixed-address: 192.168.100.100; } The fixed-address that I've used is also outside the range specified in the subnet block (which in this case is 192.168.100.128 to 192.168.100.254). I've tried adding and removing the network adapter and restarting my Mac after each time to no avail. Below is an ifconfig of the VM that might be of some help: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:56:35:0f:f1 inet addr:192.168.0.25 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::250:56ff:fe35:ff1/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:1624 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:416 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:147348 (147.3 KB) TX bytes:41756 (41.7 KB) lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) Are there any specific issues with 12.04 that I'm missing? Otherwise has anyone else got any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • Can't get my Raspberry Pi to keep a static IP

    - by JonnyIrving
I recently got given a Raspberry Pi and I would like to be able to remote into it using puTTy from my laptop so I don't have to sit next to my tv with a keyboard and mouse to use it. I am able to get a puTTy session going when I know the IP address that my router has given the Pi on each session but it keeps changing on each reboot as I would expect. So I followed a number if instruction to go about configuring the RPi to keep a static IP address. This involved changing the file at '/etc/netwrok/interfaces' which now contains (password removed): auto lo iface lo inet loopback iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.82 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.254 auto wlan0 allow-hotplug wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp wpa-ssid "BeBoxD304BF" wpa-psk "**********" Despite this however, each time I reboot my RPi it gives me a new dynamic IP address still. I also noticed that in the 'ifconfig' output below that the details of the eth0 doesn't contain IP details for inet addr, Bcast or Mask which have been present in all other examples I have seen online. eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr b8:27:eb:b5:95:da UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:87:c6:00:33:77 inet addr:192.168.1.83 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:918 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:277 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 Also I'm not sure if this is relevant but it can't hurt! The file at '/etc/resolv.conf' contains: domain config search config nameserver 192.168.1.254 ..I heard it might mean something on one of the pages I was looking at. I would be very grateful for any help with this. I have tried everything I can think of and would really like to get this working this weekend so I can use it from work.

  • Using international phone numbers on iPhone [closed]

    - by Cawas
Spin off question Is it possible to hack a SIM card to add a javacard application on it (to properly format international numbers)? If yes, how? Original Question In my previous phone carrier I could just dial +55 11 99883655 and it would just work. Now I moved to a new carrier and it doesn't work anymore! When I dial the same international number it keeps saying the number isn't formated correctly. How can I get my iPhone to understand international numbering back again? I've got over 100 contacts with numbers stored in this format already, and I want to keep them that way. edit: I originally asked this question here, moved it to apple stackexchange and now I'm bringing a new one (hopefuly).

  • A "tinkered" PC can ping by IP, not by hostname. How to fix?

Like this: root@tis-server:~# ping www.google.com ping: unknown host www.google.com root@tis-server:~# ping 8.8.8.8 PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=1 ttl=55 time=50.3 ms 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=2 ttl=55 time=65.4 ms It was tinkered by somebody else and I (and him!) cant trace his actions. • Wired connection problem through router

    - by tommypincha
I'm having trouble to connect my Ubuntu 11.10 to internet through ethernet. I installed a router to get Wi-Fi and now (by a wired connection) I can't have internet with ubuntu (but I can with Windows 7). I see several attempts per minute of the network-manager to get a connection, but after a minute it stops trying. Here are a couple of outputs from key files: cat /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback and ifconfig -a eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:76:e4:a6:e8 inet6 addr: fe80::216:76ff:fee4:a6e8/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:117 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:117 TX packets:50 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:12221 (12.2 KB) lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:582 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:582 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:46024 (46.0 KB) TX bytes:46024 (46.0 KB) I tried reconnecting the modem and the router and reconnecting the ethernet cable but nothing... I tried other solutions from other posts (this one has a similar issue Wired connection not working) but again nothing. My IP is dynamic. A couple of things I see and did: I see no inet addr, only inet6. I ignored ipv6 from the internet connections, and restarted the network-manager service and nothing. A difference with the post I mentioned is the RX packets with errors I have, is this a clue of the problem? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

  • Internet slow on one router only [the problem only in Ubuntu] [on hold]

    - by mrSuperEvening
Internet works perfectly on every other router, but browsing sucks at home (slow browsing and slow loading times). I changed DNS servers to 8.8.0.0, still doesn't help. And funnily, download speed is extremely high on this network (meaning torrents for example), but using browsers and loading websites is extremely slow (only on this network). Do I need to change something in router settings or what can I try? By the way, I use wired connection to router. EDIT: There's no problems when using Windows. • Suspected network performance issue on VirtualBox Ubuntu guest on Win7 host

    - by Adam
I set up Ubuntu 12.04 in VirtualBox on the Win7 machine I was allocated on my new project. I am running Java, Eclipse, Tomcat to develop a large data-intensive application and I noticed that this application runs at half the speed of my colleague's identical machine, where he runs it all under Windows. I think I have narrowed down the performance issue to the network, after comparing and equalising all the Java VM settings with my colleague. Is there a ping test I can do or some other network diagnostic test to flag up any problems? To give some background, the network performance is confusing. Running a network speed test to my colleague's machine with iperf shows speeds of 6 Mb/s from my Ubuntu guest, and 90 Mb/s from the win7 host. Large downloads, e.g. the Java SDK, come down at about 1.2 MB/s on both the guest and the host. Pings are sub-1ms on the host, but 1.5ms on the guest. I also did a broadband speed test, and got 10Mb/s download speed on both, but the host has an upload speed of 10Mb/s but the guest only uploads at 3Mb/s. I've been trying to diagnose any MTU problems with ping -M do to identify any kind of packet fragmentation problem but it's progressing very slow because I don't have much experience in this area. From what I read on other people's networking issues with VB and Linux guests on Win7 hosts, I should be able to get the speed on the guest up to the same level as the host. I installed a fresh VM with Ubuntu again to see if I'd foobar'd it somehow, but I'm getting the same readings with iperf on the virgin installation. My setup is: Adapter 1: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (NAT) Adapter 2: ditto (host-only adapter) eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:27:0b:76:bf inet addr:10.0.2.15 Bcast:10.0.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::a00:27ff:fe0b:76bf/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:86236 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:49369 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:69163946 (69.1 MB) TX bytes:3530535 (3.5 MB) eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:27:a3:26:b8 inet addr:192.168.56.101 Bcast:192.168.56.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::a00:27ff:fea3:26b8/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:59 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:57 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:9148 (9.1 KB) TX bytes:7648 (7.6 KB) lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:701 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:701 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:66321 (66.3 KB) TX bytes:66321 (66.3 KB)

  • Wired Connection Problem

    - by Dave

  • How to make ip Address static (eth0)

    - by Jordan Angelucci
    I'm having a really hard time configuring ubuntu 13.04 to have a static ip address. I have tried multiple solutions but everytime I reboot (can't do the network reset command because ubuntu freezes) I end up with no connection. Here is what I get when i type ifconfig into the terminal: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 10:bf:48:bc:07:cb inet addr:192.168.0.8 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::12bf:48ff:febc:7cb/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:1763067 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1024326 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:2284491220 (2.2 GB) TX bytes:136809317 (136.8 MB) lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:1840 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1840 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:185688 (185.6 KB) TX bytes:185688 (185.6 KB) I have also tried this: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.0.160 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255 gateway 192.168.0.1 dns-nameservers 24.222.0.94 dns-nameservers 24.222.0.95 If anyone could help me it would be very much appreciated.

  • How to Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars on Cell Phone Service

    - by Chris Hoffman
Cell phone contracts are bad. You get a seemingly cheap phone up front, but you more than pay for the cost of the phone over two years. Prepaid phone plans are surging in North America for a reason. Prepaid phone plans will be cheaper and more flexible than traditional contracts with big carriers for many people. However much you use your phone, there’s a good chance you can save money with a prepaid service. No More Contracts Here’s how cell phone service typically works in North America: You get a subsidized phone for “free”, $99, or $199. You sign up for a two-year contract and more than pay back the cost of that phone over the length of the contract. This is similar to leasing something or purchasing it on a credit card and paying it back over two years — you spend less up front, but you’re paying more in the long run. But this isn’t the only option. You could opt for a cheaper prepaid service that doesn’t lock you into a contract. If you don’t use your phone much, you could just pay for what you use and avoid the hefty cell phone bills. If you use your phone a lot, you could get a cheaper plan, too. Now, this certainly isn’t for everyone. If you want the latest iPhone or Galaxy smartphone every two years and require a 4G data connection, prepaid services may not be for you. On the other hand, if you don’t need the latest phone, you can save money here. You can also save a huge amount of money if you don’t use your phone much. Phone Options When you choose your prepaid or contract-free service, you’ll often be able to purchase a phone from them. You’ll generally be able to find dirt-cheap dumbphones and the cheapest, slowest Android phones for not very much money. If you are able to buy a top-of-the-line smartphone, you’ll have to pay the full, unsubsidized price. That’s $649 for either an iPhone 5S or Samsung Galaxy S4. Whatever phones the service provider offers, you could always buy a phone elsewhere — for example, you could buy an unsubsidized iPhone direct from Apple and then take it to your cell phone service of choice. Most services will allow you to get a SIM card and pop it into your existing phone rather than purchasing a phone. If you can get a hand-me-down smartphone, you can often save quite a bit of money. For example, you may have a family member upgrading from an iPhone 4S to an iPhone 5S. You could take their phone to a prepaid carrier and have a nicer phone on a cheap cell phone plan. If you brought an old smartphone to a big carrier like AT&T or Verizon, they wouldn’t give you a discount on your monthly plan. You’d have to pay the same amount of money every month as if you had gotten a subsidized phone. Google’s Nexus phones are also great options for people looking to buy smartphones and pay up-front. Google’s Nexus 4 offered a modern, almost top-of-the-line Android smartphone experience at $299 or $349 when it came out last year. Google will soon be releasing the Nexus 5 and it’s expected to be priced at $349. That’s certainly a lot more than a cheap phone, but it’s a fairly high-end smartphone at almost half the price of an iPhone 5S or Galaxy S4. Nexus phones can be purchased online from Google’s Play Store. Service Options When choosing a service, you need to consider what you actually use. If you’re someone who only uses your phone rarely, you can get plans that will allow you to pay as little as a few dollars per month. If you’re someone who’s usually in range of Wi-Fi, you may not need much data at all. If you want a plan with unlimited talk, texting, and data usage, you can get it for much cheaper than you’d pay on a major carrier like AT&T. The options here range from pay-as-you-go plans, like the ones offered by T-Mobile, which allow you to put a certain amount of money in and only drain that balance when you actually use minutes, texts, or data. If you only make a few calls and send a few texts per month, you’d only pay a few bucks. On the other end, Walmart’s Straight Talk service is a popular option that offers unlimited talk, texting, and data at $45 per month. Which service is right for you depends on a lot of things, including your usage and what each network’s coverage is like in your area. You’ll want to do some research of your own before choosing a service. Prepaid services also offer you even more flexibility after you choose one. If you’re not happy or a better deal comes along, you can switch — you’re not locked into your service for two years and you won’t pay an early termination fee. • FreeBSD 8.0 - Macbook: Trying to Connect to Wireless

    - by Koroviev
What Happened A few days ago I installed FreeBSD 8from USB to my Macbook (Core Duo, 13"). The first thing I wanted to do was get my GUI back. I'm new to FreeBSD and it's my first time off of mac or windows, so I had some learning to do. I tried to a make clean install of xorg with ports but it returned many "No address record" errors. I realised I hadn't configured network settings and then the fun started. I ran ifconfig and it found 5 devices: msk0, ath0, fwe0, fwip0, lo0. * ath0 was identified as media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect so it was clear which one I needed. From what I gathered, there are 3 files and two processes involved here: /boot/loader.conf /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf /etc/rc.conf /etc/rc.d/netif wpa_supplicant (which is a part of the former too) I'm certain it's a big simplification, so correct me if I'm wrong here. What I Tried I configured /boot/loader.conf with the few basic settings, and I'm most sure that this file is okay. The other 2 were more puzzling. I tried to make a network package in wpa_supplicant.conf. I found the ssid of the router, but the security wasn't so easy. The routers configuration on security is set to "Auto", with no explanation given. Other options are there, but Auto is selected. Another laptop uses WEP to connect (it's Vista, so I don't know how to get any more info than that), but I never configured it to do it. There's a string labled "wireless key" on the bottom of the router which I entered to set it up a new machine on the network (Windows and Macs, so it was simplified). I never had to choose a security type and only learned about them by installing FreeBSD. So perhaps WEP is what "Auto" means, but I can't find any other evidence. wpa_supplicant.conf seemed to never be correctly configured. I always got errors related to it and WPA_supplicant doesn't work. It gave me "Can't disable/enable WPA in the driver" errors and more once when I enabled -d -d. This was when I was trying some suspect configurations in rc.conf though. Usually it does nothing except hijack the shell and print "CTRL-SCAN-EVENT-RESULT" every 10 seconds. I learned how to clone the ath0 device to a wlandev interface (wlan0). ath0 is associated to it and their connection seems to go smoothly. But the wlan0's connection to the network is the problem. I couldn't create this with rc.conf, I do something wrong and get ifconfig: create: bad value errors whenever it's parsed. I did it via the shell instead. What Now? I scanned with wlan0 today: ifconfig wlan0 list scan It shows my router, even my neighbour's router. It was a relief to finally get some feedback. So wlan0 is UP and detects the router, but it is always status: no carrier. It can't associate with it and I can't figure out why. Running /etc/rc.d/netif start returns almost the same result as ifconfig would. It shows lo0 and wlan0, and sometimes ath0. I still not sure what lo0 is doing. So; how do I associate with it? We can assume it's WEP security based on how the other laptop is setup. I'll give every relevant output here. After boot, with a blank rc.conf this is what ifconfig returns: msk0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=11a<TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,TSO4> ether 00:17:f2:29:89:3b media: Ethernet autoselect ath0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 2290 ether 00:16:cb:bb:fe:65 media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect (autoselect) status: no carrier fwe0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=8<VLAN_MTU> ether 02:17:f2:60:ad:7e ch 1 dma -1 fwip0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 lladdr 0.17.f2.ff.fe.60.ad.7e.a.2.ff.fe.0.0.0.0 lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 16384 options=3<RXCSUM,TXCSUM> inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x5 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 I run: ifconfig wlan0 create wlandev ath0 It returns: wlan0: bpf attached wlan0: bpf attached wlan0: Ethernet address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx Ifconfig now returns: msk0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=11a<TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,TSO4> ether 00:17:f2:29:89:3b media: Ethernet autoselect ath0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 2290 ether 00:16:cb:bb:fe:65 media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect (autoselect) status: no carrier fwe0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=8<VLAN_MTU> ether 02:17:f2:60:ad:7e ch 1 dma -1 fwip0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 lladdr 0.17.f2.ff.fe.60.ad.7e.a.2.ff.fe.0.0.0.0 lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 16384 options=3<RXCSUM,TXCSUM> inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x5 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 wlan0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 ether 00:16:cb:bb:fe:65 media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect (autoselect) status: no carrier ssid "" channel 1 (2412 Mhz 11b) regdomain 106 indoor ecm authmode OPEN privacy OFF txpower 20 bmiss 7 scanvalid 60 bgscan bgscanintvl 300 bgscanidle 250 roam:rssi 7 roam:rate 1 wme burst bintval 0 I run: ifconfig wlan0 up ifconfig wlan0 scan It finds my router and displays its details. I can feed it my routers details now, using: ifconfig wlan0 key value key value ... They show up in wlan0 when I run ifconfig, but it still doesn't associate. What details should I feed it, what exactly is needed? What, if anything, should I have in /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf (and if that psk is needed, is it most likely the string I mentioned above)? If I define the ssid in wpa_supplicant.conf, should I still feed it to wlan0? What process should I then use to associate it? 5 .How should I add these things to rc.conf so it will automatically do this at boot? A huge thank you in advance for any help you can give, I've spent hours crawling about the shell and I've learned quite a bit from it (I finally got the hang of vi too, from all that editing). But the sooner this is fixed, the better. *P.S. I was, and still am, wondering where the extra three devices come from (the wireless and wired were all I expected to find). lo0 is up at each boot and /etc/rc.d/netif, I have no idea what it is and can't find it in dmesg. Resources: /etc/loader.conf: Code: if_ath_load="YES" wlan_wep_load="YES" wlan_ccmp_load="YES" wlan_tkip_load="YES" /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf (I emptied it of everything unnecessary, because I was just causing errors) network={ ssid="BTVOYAGER2110-1C" } /etc/rc.conf has no network settings, I commented them out because of errors. There was my attempt to clone ath0 and feed it info, but I did if via the shell instead. I've included the output of dmesg as an attachment, in case it's useful. I'd include the boot text (which appears before login) but I don't know how to catch it into a text file. If it's needed and somebody tells me how, I will (actually, even if it's not needed, how can I view it to read?).

  • Using Wicked with Devise for a sign up wizard

    - by demondeac11
I am using devise with wicked to create a sign up wizard, but I am unsure about a problem I am having creating profiles. After a user provides their email & password they are forwarded to a step to create a profile based on whether they have specified they are a shipper or carrier. However I am unsure what the code should be in the controller and the forms to generically create a profile. Here is the code I have for the application: The steps controller: class UserStepsController < ApplicationController include Wicked::Wizard steps :carrier_profile, :shipper_profile def create @user = User.last case step when :carrier_profile @profile = CarrierProfile.create!(:dot => params[:dot]) if @profile.save render_wizard @user else flash[:alert] = "Record not saved" end when :shipper_profile @profile = ShipperProfile.create!(params[:shipper_profile) if @profile.save render_wizard @user else flash[:alert] = "Record not saved" end end end end end def show @user = User.last @carrier_profile = CarrierProfile.new @shipper_profile = ShipperProfile.new case step when :carrier_profile skip_step if @user.shipper? when :shipper_profile skip_step if @user.carrier? end render_wizard end end The form for a carrier profile: <% form_for @carrier_profile , url: wizard_path, method: :post do |f| %> <div> <%= f.label :dot, "Please enter your DOT Number:" %> <%= f.text_field :dot %> </div> <%= f.submit "Next Step", class: "btn btn-primary" %> <% end %> The form for a shipper profile: <% form_for @shipper_profile , url: wizard_path, method: :post do |f| %> <div> <%= f.label :company_name, "What is your company name?" %> <%= f.text_field :company_name %> </div> <%= f.submit "Next Step", class: "btn btn-primary" %> <% end %> The user model: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :carrier_profile has_one :shipper_profile end How would I be able to write a generic new and create method to handle creating both profiles? With the current code it is stating that the user_steps controller has no POST method, although if I run rake routes I find that this is untrue.

  • SMS Through Email

    - by Patcouch22
I know this is a subject that has been well covered here and throughout the web, so I am not asking for a list of carrier emails, however my question is how to send a text without knowing the users carrier and preferably without going through a third party. The only solution that I thought of would be send out to all carriers. I would only be sending to US carriers, however would a large number of failed emails slow the mail server at all or cause any other problems? Any advice on this solution or thoughts of others would be great.
