  • WP7 help with menu effects

    Kinda new to Silverlight and have some experience with WPF but I'm doing a project with a group for a class making a game for WP7. I am currently in charge of the menu system for the game and I had a few ideas for "flashy" menu transitions. I got some going for the main menu but I wanted to do something cool for the options submenu. Anyway my idea is to either fashion an expander or to have sort of a variation of a dialog box. But the way I envisioned it would be in either case the menu items blur but are still visible while the expanded menu is displayed or while the dialog is active. If I'm being confusing sorry :) but think of Windows 7 glass effect on the menu while other options are available. What I'm getting at is I want to give this a shot but I have no idea how I would go about doing something like this. Could anyone point me in the right direction or outline some key steps for me to build off? I tried finding something like this on Google but no such luck.

    Is there another way to run Apache2 securely for multiple end users (like hosting hundreds of blogs) without using CGI mode as required by suPHP? It just seems so inefficient to use CGI mode for PHP when if we could set up permissions properly, we could host PHP through mod_php perhaps? I mean, I do want to restrict these users to their home directories for their sites, but don't want any security issues.

  • Perl CGI that sends a temporary loading page to client then later sends the actual results page

    I've wasted at least a half day of my company's time searching the Internet for an answer and I'm getting wrapped around the axle here. I can't figure out the difference between all the different technology choices (long polling, ajax streaming, comet, XMPP, etc.) and I can't get a simple hello world example working on my PC. I am running Apache 2.2 and ActivePerl 5.10.0. JavaScript is completely acceptable for this solution. All I want to do is write a simple Perl CGI script that when accessed, it immediately returns some HTML that tells the user to wait or maybe sends an animated GIF. Then without any user intervention (no mouse clicks or anything) I want the CGI script to at some time later replace the wait message or the animated GIF with the actual HTML results from their query. I know this is simple stuff and websites do it all the time, but I can't find a single working example that I can cut and paste onto my machine that will work. Here is my simple Hello World example that I've compiled from various Internet sources, but it doesn't seem to work. When I refresh this CGI URL in my web browser it prints nothing for 5 seconds, then it prints the PLEASE BE PATIENT web page, but not the results web page.   • Effects of automated time tracking/monitoring [closed]

    What are the effects of monitoring the developers' computer usage? (Which program they use - based on the title of the applications - and how much time in a day they use the keyboard and mouse.) Would it has any positive or negative effects on productivity, morale, motivation, etc? It will not have any direct impact on the developers' salary or their performance review it's just for curiosity. The developer and their manager will only see the results. Would it change anything if only the developer is allowed to see the results? The developer can disable the monitoring (for privacy) but it won't count as work time (in the monitoring program).

  • After 10.10 -> 11.04 upgrade, can only login via Classic (No Effects)

    Yesterday I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, everything seemed to go okay until immediately after login: the desktop goes into a "corrupted" looking state (similar to having too high resolution set). I can see some kind of movement by moving the mouse around/right clicking, and can enter text terminals via ctrl + alt + f1 It does this in both plain "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu Classic", and only seems to login/startup properly with Ubuntu Classic (No Effects). I have checked my video card (Radeon X600) and run the unity support test which passes with all "yes" results (Unity supported: yes): /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p I have tried re-installing my Ubuntu desktop: rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop With no success. I can workaround for now with Classic (No Effects), but I'd really like to find the root problem. Any suggestions on what else to try would be appreciated!

First I searched all the server for cgi-bin folder and it did not find any. Second I'm running my website on pure .NET and I don't use any scripts like php. Question is how can I remove this CGI thing from the IIS?

  • Setting up thttpd to run vqadmin or qmailadmin...keep getting 404s

    I run nginx for my web server but wanted to quickly toss up thttpd so I could do some maintainenace using either vqadmin or qmailadmin. Those files are located at: /usr/local/apache/cgi-bin/qmailadmin and /usr/local/apache/cgi-bin/vqadmin/vqadmin.cgi. My /etc/thttpd.conf is: host=127.0.0.1 port=8000 user=apache logfile=/var/log/thttpd.log pidfile=/var/run/thttpd.pid dir=/usr/local/apache/cgi-bin nochroot cgipat=**.cgi When I use lynx to go to http://127.0.0.1:8000/cgi-bin/vqadmin/vqadmin.cgi, thttpd tosses a 404. Any idea how to get this working? Many thanks.

    My server is a Linode 512, and on it I run a Wordpress MU with 3 websites (they don't get a lot of visitors) and a couple of NodeJS apps. I need to switch to Lighttpd because Apache 2 was using about 59% of the server's RAM, and now I have the php-cgi processes taking up about 43.6% of the server's RAM: most often 2 processes use 16.5% of the RAM each, 4 processes use 1.8% of the RAM each, and 4 more processes use 0,8% of the RAM, each How can I have less of these processes ? I'm almost sure they're not all needed for the trafic this server gets... I tried only allowing 2 children, but I still have those 10...   • What's the safest way to kick off a root-level process via cgi on an Apache server?

    The problem: I have a script that runs periodically via a cron job as root, but I want to give people a way to kick it off asynchronously too, via a webpage. (The script will be written to ensure it doesn't run overlapping instances or such.) I don't need the users to log in or have an account, they simply click a button and if the script is ready to be run it'll run. The users may select arguments for the script (heavily filtered as inputs) but for simplicity we'll say they just have the button to choose to press. As a simple test, I've created a Python script in cgi-bin. chown-ing it to root:root and then applying "chmod ug+" to it didn't have the desired results: it still thinks it has the effective group of the web server account... from what I can tell this isn't allowed. I read that wrapping it with a compiled cgi program would do the job, so I created a C wrapper that calls my script (its permissions restored to normal) and gave the executable the root permissions and setuid bit. That worked... the script ran as if root ran it. My main question is, is this normal (the need for the binary wrapper to get the job done) and is this the secure way to do this? It's not world-facing but still, I'd like to learn best practices. More broadly, I often wonder why a compiled binary is more "trusted" than a script in practice? I'd think you'd trust a file that was human-readable over a cryptic binaryy. If an attacker can edit a file then you're already in trouble, more so if it's one you can't easily examine. In short, I'd expect it to be the other way 'round on that basis. Your thoughts?

There's very little legitimate concurrent use of Bugzilla. However, it's trivial to mount a Denial of Service attack on the whole server by ignoring robots.txt and simply fetching a lot of bug pages that fork a process and hit a database.

  • Why am I getting cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi coming up when I browse my webpage?

    I've recently set up a website with a smaller hosting company. The plan has a dedicated IP. They sent me emails to say it's all set up, but now their support channels are all unresponsive even though they say it's open 24 hours. In the File Manager in the cpanel I've put an index.html file in the public_html directory. But when I point my browser to the IP address given to me, it comes up with the cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi page. What is the problem? I haven't set the name-servers for my domain yet, but that shouldn't be a problem because I am using the IP address in the browser. Note: I don't think I have access to ssh.

  • Compiz effects aren't working properly!

    On Ubuntu 12.04, the Compiz visual effects appears to be glitchy. I see a "window flash", after rotating the "Desktop Cube". I've used the "Magic Lamp effect" when minimizing windows, but the window content, minimizes faster, delaying the window border to minimize. "So the border and the window content gets apart, like in the picture below". I've tried updating Compiz, but no luck. How to fix this problem? Will Compiz work properly in XFCE? This didn't happen in Lucid Lynx. I appriciate any help!
