  • Beginning HTML and CSS [closed]

    - by romani
My goal of learning HTML and CSS is to be able to modify popular scripts such as Wordpress, vBulletin, Drupal, etc. I haven't started yet learning CSS and HTML or XHTML. I see many, many books and tutorials out there so it is difficult to make a choice. I think most of web designers were like me in the past and have read many books. So, could you tell me about 1 good book for HTML and 1 good book for CSS? and if I should read the book from cover to cover or only learning the basics is enough for modifying Wordpress, for example!

  • CSS child selector (>) doesn't work with IE

    - by Eric
    The following CSS works well under firefox but doesn't work under IE browser, Why? Also, how can I make only the elements, directly under the parent element, be affected by CSS? CSS: .box{font:24px;} .box>div{font:18px} .box>div>div{font:12px;} HTML: <div class="box"> level1 <div> level2 <div> level3</div> <div> level3</div> </div> <div> level2 <div> level3</div> <div> level3</div> </div> </div>

  • Using CSS Classes for individual effects - opinions?

    - by Cool Hand Luke UK
Hey, Just trying to canvas some opinions here. I was wondering how people go about adding individual effects to html elements. Take this example: you have three types of h1 titles all the same size but some are black some are gold and some are white. Some have a text-shadow etc. Would you create separate CSS classes and add them do the h1 tag or would you create a new single class for each different h1 title type (with grouped CSS elements)? With singular class for each effect you can build up combos of classes in html class="gold shadow" but also how would you name them. For example its bad practice to give classes and id names associated to colours, because it doesn't define what it does well. However is this ok with textual CSS classes? Just wondering what others do, I know there are no hard and fast rules. Cheers.

  • Extracting pure content / text from HTML Pages by excluding navigation and chrome content

    - by Ankur Gupta
Hi, I am crawling news websites and want to extract News Title, News Abstract (First Paragraph), etc I plugged into the webkit parser code to easily navigate webpage as a tree. To eliminate navigation and other non news content I take the text version of the article (minus the html tags, webkit provides api for the same). Then I run the diff algorithm comparing various article's text from same website this results in similar text being eliminated. This gives me content minus the common navigation content etc. Despite the above approach I am still getting quite some junk in my final text. This results in incorrect News Abstract being extracted. The error rate is 5 in 10 article i.e. 50%. Error as in Can you Suggest an alternative strategy for extraction of pure content, Would/Can learning Natural Language rocessing help in extracting correct abstract from these articles ? How would you approach the above problem ?. Are these any research papers on the same ?. Regards Ankur Gupta

  • How to reinforce pseudo css rules

    - by danwoods
Is there anyway to reinforce pseudo css rules? ie: I have a listing of divs (playlist) which I color with the following rules: #playlist .playlist_item { background: #d6d6d6; } #playlist .playlist_item:nth-child(odd) { background: #b3b3b3; } Now, when a song is playing, I use setInterval and JQuery's .animate function to pulse the background color. When the song is finished I clear the interval, but of course the song's background remains the last color set in the interval. Is there a way to re-set the song's color based on the CSS rule? Otherwise I'll have to keep track of the previous song (which may have changed position, and thus color) or setup distinct background color classes and reset the classes of all the songs in the playlist anytime someone adds, removes, or moves a song in the playlist or a song ends. I'd much rather use a CSS only approach. Thanks in advance, Dan

  • nginx probably deliering wrong filetype for .css file with php tags

    - by Katai
And again - NGINX is giving me many Questions today :) Like always, I already tried around for a while, but cant seem to fix this issue: I just configured NGINX to handle my .css files equal to my .php files (to parse PHP tags inside the CSS file). This works perfectly, and the file is found and delivered. I could debug it with FIrebug, and everything is OK (it displays the contents of the .css inside the opened <link> tag). So, everything working, right? Wrong. It has the CSS, but it does not interpret it! What I mean by this: apparently, the file-type of the CSS (or aplication-type, whatever) is wrong. The Page can access the CSS, but doesnt bother at all to actually use it. What I checked / tried: There are no PHP errors inside of the .css, so that one is out The .css is accessible. I can call the URI manually, or check if the included URL finds it: both works The .css has no syntax errors (i switched to a css that just has body {background-color: #000; } It works whitout NGINX I deleted the browser cache / restarted NGINX after config rewrites Here the configuration: server { listen 80; server_name localhost; access_log /var/log/nginx/board.access_log; error_log /var/log/nginx/board.error_log warn; root /var/www/board/public; index index.php; fastcgi_index index.php; location / { try_files $uri $uri /index.php; } location ~ (\.php|\.css)$ { try_files $uri =404; include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params; #keepalive_timeout 0; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:7777; } } Firebug 'Network' Response Header: Connection keep-alive Content-Encoding gzip Content-Type text/html Date Sat, 16 Jun 2012 10:08:40 GMT Server nginx/1.0.5 Transfer-Encoding chunked X-Powered-By PHP/5.3.6-13ubuntu3.7 I think I just answered my own question. Is the Content-Type text/html the problem? How can I remove that? My personal guess is that I have to use this in some way include /etc/nginx/mime.types; default_type application/octet-stream; But I'm not sure... anyone an idea how to solve this? TLDR; CSS file is delivered correctly, but it doesnt seem to be 'used' as CSS from the browser. (Tested, works on apache)

  • css: zoooming-out inside the browser moves rightmost floated div below other divs

    - by John Sonderson
I am seeing something strange in both firefox and chrome when I increase the zoom level inside these browsers, although I see nothing wrong with my CSS... I am hoping someone on this group will be able to help. Here is the whole story: I have a right-floated top-level div containing three right-floated right. The three inner divs have all box-model measurements in pixels which add up to the width of the enclosing container. Everything looks fine when the browser size is 100%, but when I start making the browser smaller with CTRL+scrollwheel or CTRL+minus the rightmost margin shrinks down too fast and eventually becomes zero, forcing my rightmost floated inner div to fall down below the other two! I can't make sense out of this, almost seems like some integer division is being performed incorrectly in the browser code, but alas firefox and chrome both display the same result. Here is the example (just zoom out with CTRL-minus to see what I mean): Click Here to View What I Mean on Example Site Just to narrow things down a bit, the tags of interest are the following: div#mainContent div#contentLeft div#contentCenter div#contentRight I've searched stackoverflow for an answer and found the following posts which seem related to my question but was not able to apply them to the problem I am experiencing: http:// stackoverflow.com/questions/6955313/div-moves-incorrectly-on-browser-resize http:// stackoverflow.com/questions/18246882/divs-move-when-resizing-page http:// stackoverflow.com/questions/17637231/moving-an-image-when-browser-resizes http:// stackoverflow.com/questions/5316380/how-to-stop-divs-moving-when-the-browser-is-resized I've duplicated the html and css code below for your convenience: Here is the HTML: <!doctype html> <html> <head> <meta charset="utf-8"> <title>Pinco</title> <link href="css/style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"> </head> <body> <div id="wrapper"> <header> <div class="logo"> <a href="http://pinco.com"> <img class="logo" src="images/PincoLogo5.png" alt="Pinco" /> </a> </div> <div class="titolo"> <h1>Benvenuti!</h1> <h2>Siete arrivati al sito pinco.</h2> </div> <nav> <ul class="menu"> <li><a href="#">Menù Qui</a></li> <li><a href="#">Menù Quo</a></li> <li><a href="#">Menù Qua</a></li> </ul> </nav> </header> <div id="mainContent"> <div id="contentLeft"> <section> <article> <p> Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. • Using rel=next and rel=prev with multiple sets of paginated content on the same page

    - by jakejgordon
We are running into issues with trying to figure out how to implement rel="next" and rel="prev" -- coupled with rel="canonical" -- with multiple sets of paginated content on the same page, with pages in multiple cultures. In other words, how do we implement these when we have a pager for both Product Reviews and Questions and Answers (aka "Q&A") on the same page, with duplicate content across culture-specific URLs (e.g. /us/en/my-product vs. /ca/en/my-product)? Our current implementation will actually do a full postback when you click Page 2, and will add something to the query string (e.g. website.com/ca/en/my-product?previewpage=2 or website.com/ca/en/my-product?questionpage=2). If we only had one set of paginated content then the implementation would certainly be more straightforward. Adding a second set of paginated content (i.e. Q&A) complicates things. Let's assume that we want the United States English page to be the canonical target (i.e. /us/en/my-product) based on culture. If you go to the /ca/en/my-product page you'll have a rel="canonical" href="/us/en/my-product". So far so good. Let's also assume that we are not implementing a page that lists ALL Product Reviews and Q&A. This would likely solve a number of our problems by using rel="canonical" to this page, but is not an option for reasons that are out of scope for this discussion. Now if you click on page 2 of Product Reviews, it will reload the page with /ca/en/my-product?reviewpage=2 as the URL. Given this scenario, here are my questions: On page 2 of the my-product page on the Canadian site, should there be a rel="canonical" to /us/en/my-product?reviewpage=2 (assuming the content is identical in the United States and Canada)? Should the rel="prev" go to /ca/en/my-product?reviewpage=1 or should it go to /ca/en/my-product ? The query-string version would really only be accessible if using the pager and shows the exact same content as the base page. The following two questions are closely related to this one. Should the /ca/en/my-product?reviewpage=1 have a rel canonical directly to /us/en/my-product (United States page with nothing in query string) since the content is identical)? Given that Q&A content is also paginated, should there be a rel="next" on the base page without query string? In other words, should the /ca/en/my-product page have a rel="next" to /ca/en/my-product?reviewpage=2 AND rel="next" to /ca/en/my-product?questionpage=2 . So far as I can tell it doesn't make sense to have multiple rel="next" implementations on the same page. I suspect that the pages with query string values should have rel="next" and rel="prev" that only point to other pages with query strings and not to the base page. The ?reviewpage=1 and ?questionpage=1 pages would then just have a rel="canonical" to /us/en/my-product . Thoughts? I know this is a tough one -- that's why I brought it to this community. Thanks so much for your help in advance!

  • Are CSS sprites bad for SEO?

    - by UpTheCreek
Nowadays often what was accomplished with an <img> tag is now done with something like a <div> with a Css background image set using a CSS 'sprite' and an offset. I was wondering what kind of an effect his has on SEO, as effectively we lose the alt attribute (which is indexed by google), and are stuck with the 'title' attribute (which as far as I understand is not indexed). Is this a significant dissadvantage?

  • Difference in css-positioning in windows and linux

    - by andrii
    I have a problem with rendering my html page by the same browsers in different OS. There are 3 spans and position of each span is corrected through css(position:relative). But I have found out that the page that looks correct in firefox under Linux, shows not right at the same firefox(3.5.7) under Windows OS. Linux(Left - How it should be)/Windows(right): link text And the same with other browsers. What is the cause of this problem and how is possible to solve it. My code: question.html: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"/> <title>Question</title> <link href="css/question.css" rel="stylesheet" media="all" /> </head> <body> <div class="eventFullDate"> <span class="eventYear">2010</span> <span class="eventDate">17</span> <span class="eventMonth">FEB</span> </div> </body> </html> question.css: html, body{ font-family: Georgia; } div.eventFullDate{ height: 39px; width: 31px; float: left; border: 1px solid; border-color: #E3E3E3; background-color: #F7FFFF; } span.eventYear, span.eventDate, span.eventMonth{ color: #EC5C1D; position: relative; width: 100%; } span.eventYear{ left: 1px; bottom: 3px; font-size: 0.8em; } span.eventDate{ left: 5px; bottom: 12px; font-size: 1.3em; } span.eventMonth{ left: 3px; bottom: 15px; font-size: 0.8em; }

  • CSS Framework Recommendations

    - by Jourkey
When I say CSS Framework, I don't mean a reset or a grid. I mean a framework like xCSS or csscaffold or compass. I've been doing CSS for a couple of years, but has not had a lot of exposure to frameworks. Does anyone have any experiences working with them? What are some potential downsides? What frameworks are popular/recommended? Thanks.

  • User (MS-Office) generated content - how?

    - by Avi
How can I allow users to share Microsoft Office generated content on an ASP.Net site? For example usage, imagine a site similar to StackOverflow. George, writing a question, uses Word, Excel or OneNote to create content, and then inserts the content into the question area (probably copying it into the clipboard and then using some "paste from office" widget). Harry, who doesn't have MS-Office on his computer, can still see in his browser the content George has generate. If Harry wants to add content, he can use the built in editor, same like in Stackoverflow, and have to be satisfied with lesser functionality. Sue, who has MS-Office installed, can of course see the content in the browser just like Harry. In addition, she can "export" this content and process it in the application George used to generate it. So, how do I do it? Would Save/Export to HTML feature work? Any tools? Samples? Articles? Office 2007 or later is OK.

  • CSS: Aligning problem with rounded corners in IE 6/7 but ok in IE8/ Firefox etc

    - by mark smith
Hi there, can anyone help? I have a problem aligning rounded corners in IE6/7. Basically everything seems to work in Firefox / IE8 but in IE6/7 the left / center / and right divs get misaligned. This basically shows exactly what i am refering to. here is the example in IE8 and everything works ok http://es.drop.io/ern0fye/asset/ie8-jpg And here is the problem (this example is running in IE8 with compat mode set to IE7) http://es.drop.io/ern0fye/asset/ie7-jpg I seem to remember there being a bug in IE6/7 with lineheight or similar but i don't recall exactly. I will paste the CSS and HTML below it is very very simple. Basically there is a left div that holds the left corner image and center div which has a background of RED which is the same as the corner images and finally a right div which holds the right corner image. I would appreciate any input anyone has. Thanks in advance. Here is the CSS .vl-top-left { float:left; width:12px; height:12px; } .vl-top-center { float:left; width: 485px; background-color: #F04A23; height:12px; } .vl-top-right { float:left; height:12px; width:12px; } and the HTML is :- <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" > <head> <title></title> <link href="Stylesheet1.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> </head> <body> <div class="vl-top-left"> <img src="content/images/esquina_sup_izq.gif" width="12" height="12"> </div> <div class="vl-top-center"> &nbsp; </div> <div class="vl-top-right"> <img src="content/images/esquina_sup_der.gif" width="12" height="12"> </div> </body> </html> EDIT Applied also margin:0 and padding:0 on the body and on each DIV but still the left and right div drops down as per the screenshot

  • Relative Footer with Absolute DIV Elements

    - by Alex
Hi, I'm creating a wordpress theme where the header and the nav bar are positioned absolutely, and the footer needs to be positioned relatively depending on the height of the content on each page. When I try to set the footer's positioning to relative, however, it appears at the top of the page underneath the content. All elements are in a relatively positioned container. Is there any way to fix this, or to dynamically get the height of the content plus the header and nav bar? The structure of the page is as follows: <div id="container"> <div id="header"> </div> <div id="navbar"> </div> <div id="content"> Dynamically generated and variable height content here. </div> <div id="footer"> </div> </div> And the relevant css is: #container { position: relative; margin:0px auto; width: 945px; text-align: left; } #header, #navbar{ background-color: #FFFFFF; position: absolute; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; width: 945px; float: left; } #footer { height: 35px; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; width: 945px; position: relative; padding-top: 20px } Thanks for the help.

  • Visual Studio search feature does not seem to be searching for text in CSS files [migrated]

    - by aspdotnetuser
I noticed that when using Visual Studio's 'Find in files' search feature, it does not appear to search/find text in CSS files even though the text does exist. I can't find anything on the net regarding this issue and cannot determine even if Visual Studio allows you to search for text within CSS files. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this; Is it supposed to allow you to do this? If so, what reasons would explain why this is not working?

  • Automatic CSS Preview Generator - Have css file, want to automatically generate html to preview styl

    - by Marcel Chastain
I have a fairly large CSS file developed by my web designer. There are, of course, plenty of IDs, classes and tag properties assigned therein. Are there any tools to automatically generate HTML based on a CSS source file? For example: #basicInfoHead{ background:url(../images/leftHeaders.jpg) no-repeat; margin-left: 0px; width:185px; height:28px; } #basicInfoHead span{ float: left; } Would generate <div id=basicInfoHead><span>#basicInfoHead span</span></div> Etc etc. From there, I could preview the generated code in my browser, and see what each of the individual (primarily text) styles would look like. Thanks in advance!

    NOT EDITING BELOW BUT THANKS TO SOME REALLY NICE PEOPLE I CAN'T POST AN IMAGE ANYMORE BECAUSE I HAD a 15 Rep but NOW ONLY A 5 becuase my question wasn't what they wanted help with they gave me a neg rep. The problem is that the content loads it displays UNDER the div i placed #CONTENT# inside so the styles are being ignored and it's posting #CONTENT# outside the divs at positions 0,0 any suggestions? Found out whats happening by using "View Source" seems that it's putting all of the #CONTENT#, content that's being loaded in front of the <head> tag. Like this <doctype...> <div class="home"> \ blah blah #CONTENT# bot being loaded in correct specified area </div> / <head> <script src=""></script> </head> <body> <div class="header"></div> <div class="contents"> #CONTENT# < where content SHOULD load </div> <div class="footer"></div> </body> so anyone got a fix? OK so a better description I'll add relevant screen-shots Whats happening is /* file.class.php */ <?php $file = new file(); class file{ var $path = "templates/clean"; var $ext = "tpl"; function loadfile($filename){ return file_get_contents($this->path . "/" . $filename . "." . $this->ext); } function setcontent($content,$newcontent,$vartoreplace='#CONTENT#'){ $val = str_replace($vartoreplace,$newcontent,$content); return $val; } function p($content) { $v = $content; $v = str_replace('#CONTENT#','',$v); print $v; } } if(!isset($_GET['page'])){ // if not, lets load our index page(you can change home.php to whatever you want: include("main.txt"); // else $_GET['page'] was set so lets do stuff: } else { // lets first check if the file exists: if(file_exists($_GET['page'].'.txt')){ // and lets include that then: include($_GET['page'].'.txt'); // sorry mate, could not find it: } else { echo 'Sorry, could not find <strong>' . $_GET['page'] .'.txt</strong>'; } } ?> is calling for a file_get_contents at the bottom which I use in /* index.php */ <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <?php include('classes/file.class.php'); // load the templates $header = $file->loadfile('header'); $body = $file->loadfile('body'); $footer = $file->loadfile('footer'); // fill body.tpl #CONTENT# slot with $content $body = $file->setcontent($body, $content); // cleanup and output the full page $file->p($header . $body . $footer); ?> and loads into /* body.tpl */ <div id="bodys"> <div id="bodt"></div> <div id="bodm"> <div id="contents"> #CONTENT# </div> </div> <div id="bodb"></div> </div> but the issue is as follows the $content loads properly img tags etc <h2> tags etc but CSS styling is TOTALY ignored for position width z-index etc. and as follows here's the screen-shot My Firefox Showing The Problem In Action REPOSTED DUE TO PEOPLE NOT HELPING AND JUST BEING ARROGANT AND GIVING NEGATIVE VOTES and not even saying a word.   • CSS Sprite vertical repeat problem

    - by ShiVik
Hello all I am trying to include css sprites in my webapp. The thing is I have arranged my website background vertically in sprite image. Now, one portion of the sprite needs to be repeated vertically. I was trying the following code... #page-wrapper {   margin: 0px auto;   background-image: url(../images/background.png);   height: 100%;   width: 1000px; } #page-wrapper #content {   background-position: 0px -80px;   background-repeat: repeat-y;   height: 1px; } I am confused in the height property of content class. How should I define the height of the section which I want to repeat and the height of the div(#content)? Regards Vikram
