  • Strategies for browser compatibility on web applications in a corporate environment

    With the new CSS 3 and HTML 5 technology, web applications have gained a lot of new tools for a better UI (user interface) interaction, beautiful templates and even responsive layout to fit into tablets and smartphones. Within a corporate environment, those new technologies are required so the company can "follow" the IT evolution and their concurrent, but they also want that those new web applications supports old browsers. How should I deal with this situation? By one side we are asked to follow the the evolution of technology, create responsive layouts and use a lot of cool jQuery plugins. On the other hand, we are asked to support old browsers that do not support those new responsive features, plugins or components. I would like advice and strategies on how to create "modern" web applications that are also supported on old browsers. How does your company deal with this situation? Is it possible to have the same web application run well and beautifully on old browsers, and be responsive and interactive on newer browsers?

  • Mobile phone detection (brand, model, browser etc)

    What do you use to detect visitor's mobile phone, down to the model if possible? Currently we maintain our own database but it's really getting behind due to lack of manpower to maintain it, so we decided to give 3rd party solution a try. These are my candidates but I don't have time to really try them all: DeviceAtlas - 1 year personal evaluation, but basic license is affordable. Their database look solid with daily update and user-contributed tests / updates. I am favoring this one at the moment. DetectRight - I was recommended this by a colleague but really can't find much from their site. 20k devices -- really? WURFL - Open source, database collaboratively derived from UAProf. So basically if you're going with UAProf solution, you're better off with WURFL. DetectMoBileBrowsers - This looks like the simplest of all. Too bad it's language dependent (PHP). Please share your experience or suggestions!

  • browser without gpu support

    Google has an Easter egg that draws 3D graph but when I tried it out on chrome it complained about no WebGL support. I've also tested it on Firefox whose WebGL support was enabled but ended up with the same problem. Thus, I suspect it's an issue of my GPU. Some googling led me to chrome://gpu and here's what I got Graphics Feature Status Canvas: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable HTML Rendering: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable 3D CSS: Unavailable. Hardware acceleration unavailable WebGL: Unavailable. Hardware acceleration unavailable WebGL multisampling: Unavailable. Accelerated compositing is disabled.: 59302 Mesa drivers in linux older than 7.11 are assumed to be buggy. Accelerated 2d canvas is unstable in Linux at the moment.     I am always getting redirecting to this http://search.tedata.net tedata is my internet provider . I called them they say they can't help unless I have windows but I don't want to go back to windows I tried rootkit hunter but it didn't work either I don't know what is wrong , how could this keep coming up even after formatting my hard ? is it possible that the ubuntu version I have downloaded from the website is defective , the problem didn't appear with linux mint or xubuntu it only appeared when I replaced unity with cinnamon but now it appears right away after clean installation of ubuntu 12.04

  • Browser support for internal corporate tools

    We are on the verge of a conversion. For years, our company supported only IE for its internal (intranet) home-built tools. Since a few of our users are still on XP, which means IE only goes up to 8... a heavily JS / jQuery site wont even load! We have been in the process of converting to use Chrome instead, to make use of its javascript performance. But, it has now been suggested that we support all common browsers... internally for these tools. Which means more development time to scale-back some of these new applications, more time to test in all browsers, and we are already under staffed. Are there any good informational sites/posts out there, that already make this argument?

  • Looking for a previous post about skillsets for an embedded/firmware engineer. Can't find it anymore [closed]

    I remember reading a post inquiring the basic/advanced skills required for embedded engineer works. The top comment divides the answer into two parts, the basic level/design level ,not purely coding(something like this...). Then another level : writing application(all about programming). For each level/category, the top comment talks about the necessary skills/knowledge/college courses(for me at least) .   • Embedded Windows XP

    My company acquired a brake press for bending large structural steel plates. We received it second hand and it came with an embedded copy of windows XP. Now for the part that's driving me nuts: plug and play has been turned off, also accessibility options has been disabled. What does this mean for me? Keyboards will not work! Nothing that plugs into a USB port will work and it does not have a CD ROM drive. I have tried to turn on plug and play using the on screen keyboard but it is not there since accessibility options is turned off. I would just get an updated copy of the the embedded OS but they come from Sweden and are extremely expensive. I assume there has got to be a way to get a USB devices to work. We need to get a wifi adapter on it so I can use team viewer and remotely configure it for our needs. Things to keep in mind: There is no keyboard so everything has to be done with the mouse There is no PS2 port for a keyboard just a mouse. Odd. I am 5 states away from this location and have been working with a tech who is physically installing the machine. System 32 seems to be missing A LOT of files, the tech told me there is only 8 folders in there and no other files (I don't even understand how Windows is running like this). If anyone has ANY ideas I would appreciate it, I am unsure where to go from here.

  • Is browser fingerprinting a viable technique for identifying anonymous users?

    Is browser fingerprinting a sufficient method for uniquely identifying anonymous users? What if you incorporate biometric data like mouse gestures or typing patterns? The other day I ran into the Panopticlick experiment EFF is running on browser fingerprints. Of course I immediately thought of the privacy repercussions and how it could be used for evil. But on the other hand, this could be used for great good and, at the very least, it's a tempting problem to work on. While researching the topic I found a few companies using browser fingerprinting to attack fraud. And after sending out a few emails I can confirm at least one major dating site is using browser fingerprinting as but one mechanism to detect fake accounts. (Note: They have found it's not unique enough to act as an identity when scaling up to millions of users. But, my programmer brain doesn't want to believe them).     Hi, How can I make an application interface so that a PC application can communicate to an embedded device like a POS terminal? Like for example, an embedded device like POS terminal that has an embedded linux as an OS. Then I want a PC application to communicate in that POS terminal and access its module hardware like for example its magnetic stripe reader.     Hi I've embedded several views in a library so that I can re-use across projects using this method which works OK: http://www.wynia.org/wordpress/2008/12/aspnet-mvc-plugins/ But one view usings a Javascript file. I've tried marking this as an embedded resource and adding it AssemblyInfo.cs and then referencing this resource using <%= ClientScript.GetWebResourceUrl(this.GetType(), "FullPath.FileName.js")%> This is literally displaying this output in the view WebResource.axd?d=nUxqfqAUQLabLU54W I think this is because Im trying to refer to an embedded resource from an embedded resource. Help appreciated as Im going round in circles.. Steve

  • Remote debugging in Windows Embedded

    Hi, I'm moving from Windows CE 6 to Windows Embedded Standard 7 for a project and am wondering how remote debugging of .Net apps works with Windows Embedded target devices. In CE with VS2008 and ActiveSync (USB), I can hit F5 and my app is automatically deployed to the target device and executed so I can step through my breakpoints just like I would if I were debugging locally. Is there an equivalent remote debugging solution for Windows Embedded debugging? A quick glance through the Visual Studio "Remote Debugger" documentation makes the whole thing seem a lot clunkier/less integrated. Is there an easy way to debug applications on target devices running Windows Embedded like I would with CE? Thanks, Ben

I need help to get started in the domain of Embedded Systems; like how/where to start off, Hardware prerequisites, necessary programming skills, also what kind of Embedded Applications etc. I've heard of ARM, firmware, PIC Micorcontrollers; but I don't know anything & just need proper introduction about them.   • How to: Simulating keystroke inputs in shell to an app running in an embedded target

    I am writing an automation script that runs on an embedded linux target. A part of the script involves running an app on the target and obtaining some data from the stdout. Stdout here is the ssh terminal connection I have to the target. However, this data is available on the stdout only if certain keys are pressed and the key press has to be done on the keyboard connected to the embedded target and not on the host system from which I have ssh'd into the target. Is there any way to simulate this? Edit: Elaborating on what I need - I have an OpenGL app that I run on the embedded linux (works like regular linux) target. This displays some graphics on the embedded system's display device. Pressing f on the keyboard connected to the target outputs the fps data onto the ssh terminal from which I control the target. Since I am automating the process of running this OpenGL app and obtaining the fps scores, I can't expect a keyboard to be connected to the target let alone expect a user to input a keystroke on the embedded target keyboard. How do I go about this? Thanks.

    How should I manage memory in my mission critical embedded application? I found some articles with google, but couldn't pinpoint a really useful practical guide. The DO-178b forbids dynamic memory allocations, but how will you manage the memory than? preallocate everything in advance and send a pointer to each function that needs allocation? Allocate it on the stack? Use a global static allocator (but then it's very similar to dynamic allocation)? Answers can be of the form of regular answer, reference to a resource, or reference to good opensource embedded system for example. clarification: The issue here is not whether or not memory management is availible for the embedded system. But what is a good design for an embedded system, to maximize reliability.

    Getting the following error when attempting to install: Error attempting to create the destination file: C:\Windows Embedded Data\Repositories\{25C88912-9870-4686-97CE-8244C A1B0DAB}.CAB. System error code: 5 Code 5 looks to be an "Access denied" issue. Not sure if this is a generic Windows error, or specific to this install. Any insight is appreciated! -Tim

  • Hard drive restore on reboot on windows embedded

    My company has an old out of service device with windows embedded on it that we want to re purpose. Any changes to the drive (SD Card with 2 partitions), (ie: installed software, ip address, system settings, files) are reset/deleted when we reboot the device. We can successfully make changes to the drive by plugging it into a PC, but that has its limitations and we would like to be able to use our device. Can anyone tell us more about the technology used for doing this and how/if we can disable it?
