• Graciously shutdown external HDD enclosure?

  I recently purchased a large HDD along with the following HDD enclosure: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817173043 It has a simple on-off switch on the back. When I want to turn this thing off, do I simply just flip the switch? I assume the switch simply kills the power to the HDD, but isn't that potentially a bad thing in the case that the HDD is still reading/writing? I used to have a Seagate external HDD and it had a button on the front that I had to hold down for a second or two before it would turn off, but it at least appeared to sort of go through a shutdown procedure where it probably would stop the HDD activity before cutting power. So with this external HDD, I'm a little bit leery about that power switch and understanding exactly what it does. Is this how all HDD enclosures are? EDIT: I'm running the drive in Ubuntu Server. So there is no 'ejecting' the drive lol

• external HDD with SATA & USB interface?

  Anyone know of an external HDD that would have (in addition to USB) a SATA (eSATA) port/cable? i.e. Brand/Model. Preferably one of the name brands so I have a better change of finding it here or locally if possible. Background - In one location I want to use it is I would like to increase the performance by cabling it directly to the PC SATA port, HOWEVER I don't want to have to open up the PC to do this each time. I was thinking of running a SATA cable out through the PC case so I just plug it directly into the external HDD in question. Perhaps it should be also externally powered too so I don't need to run a power cable out from the PC power supply.

• Time Machine/iMac loses all trace of external hard drive after a few days

  First time posting, also a Mac newbie (recent windows convert) so I'm hoping I can get some help here :) I have a Hitachi Deskstar drive in an external casing that I got from ebuyer. (its one of those unknown fairly cheapish enclosures) connected via firewire. I hook it up and it works fine, but then at some point over the next week or so I'll realise that my last update was 3 days ago or so. At this point the Mac will not recognise the drive as existing and the only thing to do is switch off and on the external enclosure. It then works fine for a while. If I had to guess I'm assuming its powering down or something when the Mac goes into standby? Is there anyway to solve this?

  I have installed Windows 7 as my media server. I pluged in 500GB external HDD via USB. I have changed power plan to Best Performance and changed advenced power settings to never turn off HDD etc. I even yesterday wrote powershell script (create and delete folder on this disk) and I have added it to harmonogram to run every 5 minutes starting from system boot. And nothing! Disk after some time (I realy can't say when) is turning off and Windows show "Unknown Device" in Device Manager. Then only system reboot or disk reboot helps. Any ideas how to prevent Windows 7 from stopping my external HDD? Cheers!

• Options for connecting an external disk to an old laptop

  I've tried connecting a 2.5" external drive to an old laptop which has only USB 1. The LED on the disk lights up, but the disk doesn't seem to spin up. Since the same disk works fine on a newer laptop my guess is that the old one doesn't output enough power on the USB port. Besides looking for an external drive with its own PSU, what would you suggest? Will one of those USB cables with two connectors work? What about a powered USB hub?

• Safe BIOS upgrade run from external USB-HDD and not native OS

  I have a Toshiba M200 laptop which came with Windows Vista. After buying it, I replaced the OS with XP and recently I swapped the internal hard disk with a bigger one where I only have Ubuntu. So now I can boot XP from the external USB hard disk. There's a BIOS update available (2.3 against my 1.8) which I'd like to install and there's also a version for XP. Is it "reasonably" safe to install this upgrade for Windows XP (despite the original OS was Vista, the laptop model is the right one) from my external USB hard disk with Win XP?

  hi, i'd like to hook an external monitor to my notebook as i need a higher resolution (1680x1050). my notebook supports that resolution (via analog vga out) but the quality is pretty awful - there are blurry horizontal shadows everywhere and tweaking didn't help - seems like the vga out's quality isn't good enough. so i was wondering - does it make sense looking for an external video card? can i also connect a dvi monitor via usb-video-card with optimal quality? my notebook also has pcmcia. any recommendations which i should buy? thx

• cannot unset env variables from script

  Hi, I am trying to unset all environment variables from within a script. The script runs fine but if I run env it still shows all the variables set. If I run the command from CLI, it works and the variables are unset. unset `env | awk -F= '/^\w/ {print $1}' | xargs` Have any idea how to run this from a script? Also, have any idea how to source /etc/profile from a script? This doesn't work either. I need to set variables with same names but different paths, depending on the instances my users need.

  A little mishap happened earlier today and i am thinking i should have a copy of my external harddrive since 10% of it is very valuable. What is the best solution to keep two external harddrive in sync? i'll probably use one as regular and maybe use the other only to copy data. The easiest way to keep it in sync is to clear one drive and copy the other but 1T of data will take a long time. Whats a good existing app that will keep them in sync? freeware preferred.

  I've got a SSD as my primary hard drive. I have an external HDD hard drive which I use to store downloaded files. At the moment I have to delete 80 GB of that external hard drive. I realized that if I delete it normally, it would probably go to the recycle bin of my SSD. I am wondering how I can delete the files on my HDD without affecting the SSD or putting any files on it.   Yeah, truly the whole question in the header. Is there a way to use Windows 7 offline sync (which we know from network mapped drives) with a external usb hd? When not, are there similar built in tools or good third party tools? My scenario: I want to buy a ultrabook with SSD which is mostly limited in space. So I'm going to put all files to a external HD and only store current projects on the local SSD. Let's say I have to change project. It would be easy just change sync folders and have the second project synced to my hd too. With network mapped drives it's such easy. Paths do not differ if the drive is offline so in most situations you don't take notice if the folder is offline. And you only have to activate offline file for the folders you courrently need for work. So is there a similar solution for usb hard drives?

• Windows 7 - cannot access my own external disk

  I use Windows 7 Home Premium and external USB disk with NTFS partition. I cannot write-access the my own files on it, even as a member of Admnistrators group! Is there any way how to go around this permission checking, without actually writing some permission information to every folder on it? I have 3 external disks (up to 1TB), and I have thousands hundreds of files on each!!! Doing some permission change, that will actually go recursivelly through all folders on all my disks is plain brain damage!! 1) Is there any way how to change it somehow globally? (like mount options...) .. Or how to go around this annoying permission checking? It was working in Win XP normally! 2) if not, and I must do the recursive operation on all folders, how to do it PERMANENTLY, so that I don't need to do it again on another Windows 7 computer!

• Backup folder on sometimes attached external usb harddrive

  My girlfriend no longer has space her laptops drive to store her photos. The drive she has now is 750GB, so to go to a bigger drive would be expensive, as there isn't many 1.5tb 2.5 inch 9.5mm hdd on the market (as of now, there is only one). Because of that, I am thinking of moving her pictures to a cheap external usb hdd. As of now, I'm automatically backing up her important folders (My Documents, Pictures, etc.) using Windows 7 default backup software to a network drive. My problem is that I don't know of a good solution to automatically backup a folder residing on an usb disk. The usb disk won't be attached to the computer all the time, so I can't just treat it as a normal backup folder. Sometimes the backup would run and the folder would not be there! Anyone knows any software or methodology to backup folders on external usb hard drives that are not always present? Thanks

What issues will I run into? I plan on using 2 power strips and having them all externally powered from the wall. I will use a USB hub to plug in all the drives. • External monitor turning black intermittently

  I have installed an external monitor (Dell ST2220L, 21.5 inch) on my laptop (Sony Vaio). I am using a DVI-D cable for connection. Since the laptop does not have a DVI-D port, I have connected a DVI-D to HDMI connector on the laptop end and inserted the cable in HDMI port of the laptop.. I have switched off the laptop display and adjusted the screen resolution on the Dell external monitor to 1920 x 1080 and adjusted colors for the Windows 7 and brightness and contrast from the monitor. The problem is the monitor turns of blank intermittently for 1-2 seconds and turns on again at random interval. What could be the reason for this and how to get rid of this problem?

  Hi All, I'm trying to call a function in JavaScript via Java. This works fine when directly reading a script as a string but I'm using CompiledScripts. When I do this with a compiled script it gives me method not found if I also add bindings. Without bindings it works but of course the function fails because it needs the bindings. Any ideas?   I just started with jQuery and so far I have a really good impression of the framework. But now I have a problem that I can't figure out on myself. I want to embed an external javascript file that loads a videoplayer and displays it. If I include the <script>...</script> directly in HTML it loads just fine. But when I try to load it with jQuery it has very different behaviors in several browsers but it doesn't work in a single one. Either the player is not loaded at all or it doesn't update the selected div but reloads the player on a blank page. • How to format my external HDD back to as "removable storage"?

  Recently I formated my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex external HDD in Mac OS X using GUID partition table since I wanted to install another Mac OS X onto that external HDD. However I changed my mind after my external HDD being formatted. Now I want to format my external HDD back to NTFS so that I can use it with my Windows 7. However, after I connected my external HDD via USB it didn't show up in my "computer" so I used "Disk Management" to check what's wrong with it. In the "Disk Management" I saw that there was one partition of my external HDD called "EFI partition" and I found that I could not delete this partition in the "Disk Management". So I tried to use "diskpart" in cmd and select the external HDD and commanded "clean". Then the EFI partition was gone and I created new volumn on that external HDD. However, after the volumn being created my external HDD did show up in my "computer" but it is in the "Hard Disk Drive" not in the "Devices with Removable Storage" as it used to be. I'm wondering if I can do anything to it to make it recognized as a "Devices with Removable Storage"?

  Using CentOs, I want to run a script as user 'training' as a system service. I use daemontools to monitor the process, which needs a launcher script that is run as root and has no tty standard in. Below I give my four different attempts which all fail. : #!/bin/bash exec >> /var/log/training_service.log 2>&1 setuidgid training training_command This last line is not good enough since for training_command, we need environment for trqaining user to be set. : su - training -c 'training_command' This looks like it (http://serverfault.com/questions/44400/run-a-shell-script-as-a-different-user) but gives 'standard in must be tty' as su making sure tty is present to potentially accept password. I know I could make this disappear by modifying /etc/sudoers (a la http://superuser.com/questions/119376/bash-su-script-giving-an-error-standard-in-must-be-a-tty) but i am reluctant and unsure of consequences. : runuser - training -c 'training_command' This one gives runuser: cannot set groups: Connection refused. I found no sense or resolution to this error. : ssh -p100 training@localhost 'source $HOME/.bashrc; training_command' This one is more of a joke to show desparation. Even this one fails with Host key verification failed. (the host key IS in known_hosts, etc). Note: all of 2,3,4 work as they should if I run the wrapper script from a root shell. problems only occur if the system service monitor (daemontools) launches it (no tty terminal I guess). I am stuck. Is this something so hard to achieve? I appreciate all insight and guidance to best practice. • Changing default datadirectory to one on a External NAS or add external share

  So I have been searching the web for days, looking for a solution to my problem. Now my only hope are you guys. I have installed Owncloud successfully on my Windows Server 2008R2. It all runs smoothly and I can connect without problems. So first checks are OK. Now I wanted to change the default data directory from my server to a shared folder on my NAS (Synology DS1813+, DSM 5.0-4493 Update 3). Tried following: changing the directory in config.php I changed the path in the config file from : "C:\inetpub\wwwroot\myfolder\data" to "\NASIP\cloud". by doing this the owncloud server only shows: Code: Select all Daten-Verzeichnis (\192.168.2.4\Cloud\data) ist ungültig Bitte stelle sicher, dass das Daten-Verzeichnis eine Datei namens ".ocdata" im Wurzelverzeichnis enthält. I also tried coping the files that were created in the local data storage, to the share on the NAS. No Luck. Now I tried it by mapping a network drive and using that in the config.php But still no luck. I get the same message with the missing .ocdata file. Now I tried the "External Storage APP" that comes with owncloud I thought that at least I could add the share as an external storage. But this also does not work. tried UNC, Mapped Drive Name (Z:) but nothing helped. So now I'm turning to you.. Does anyone have expirience with this kind of setup? Or can you even tell me how to make it work? (default or external storgae, I don't care anymore ) Using NAS (Synology DS1813+, DSM 5.0-4493 Update 3), Owncloud 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, IIS7 I got an answer on an other forum: The second option is how it should be done: 1. Put OC in maintenance mode 2. Mount (mapping in the windows world) your NAS directly to your OS 3. Copy the local data directory to the NAS mount 4. Ensure the permission is setup to give the web user access to the NAS mount 5. Update OC config.php with the new data path 6. Disable OC maintenance mode And this seems like the right way.. Ensure the permission is setup to give the web user access to the NAS mount I guess this is where I am not sure. What user is it exactly on my Server that is making the requests to the NAS? If the user is for example "IUSR" I can just create an account on my synology NAS and give him full access to my share? (But what is IUSRs password?) I have full root ssh access to my NAS, so if you can tell me what chmod or chown I need to use on my cloud folder...
