  • What software has been written in Scheme?

    - by skiphoppy
I loved Scheme in the programming languages concepts class I took several years ago. Ever since reading what Paul Graham has to say about Lisp, I've been intending to go back and pick Scheme up again and see if it'll improve my programming in general. Are there any well-known works of software written in Scheme? Open source packages? Websites?

  • Why is the recursion idiom in Haskell "'n+1' and 'n'" and not "'n' and 'n-1'"?

    - by rulfzid
    I'm working my way through Graham Hutton's Haskell book, and in his recursion chapter, he often pattern-matches on "n+1", as in: myReplicate1 0 _ = [] myReplicate1 (n+1) x = x : myReplicate1 n x Why that and not the following, which (1) seems functionally identical and (2) more intuitive in terms of understanding what's happening with the recursion: myReplicate2 0 _ = [] myReplicate2 n x = x : myReplicate2 (n-1) x Is there something I'm missing here? Or is it just a matter of style?

  • Low hanging fruit where "a sufficiently smart compiler" is needed to get us back to Moore's Law?

    - by jamie
Paul Graham argues that: It would be great if a startup could give us something of the old Moore's Law back, by writing software that could make a large number of CPUs look to the developer like one very fast CPU. ... The most ambitious is to try to do it automatically: to write a compiler that will parallelize our code for us. There's a name for this compiler, the sufficiently smart compiler, and it is a byword for impossibility. But is it really impossible? Can someone provide a concrete example where a paralellizing compiler would solve a pain point? Web-apps don't appear to be a problem: just run a bunch of Node processes. Real-time raytracing isn't a problem: the programmers are writing multi-threaded, SIMD assembly language quite happily (indeed, some might complain if we make it easier!). The holy grail is to be able to accelerate any program, be it MySQL, Garage Band, or Quicken. I'm looking for a middle ground: is there a real-world problem that you have experienced where a "smart-enough" compiler would have provided a real benefit, i.e that someone would pay for?

  • Upcoming Events

    - by noreply(at)blogger.com (Thomas Kyte)
I'll be doing four public events in the next week and a half or so. The first one is open to anyone - anywhere.  I'll be doing a live webinar on MAA - the Maximum Availability Architecture.  It will take place this Thursday April 12th at 10am PDT.  You should register online before then if you are interested. After that, I'll be off to Belfast Ireland to do a repeat of what I presented at Oracle OpenWorld in October.  This will be done in conjunction with Oracle and the UKOUG.  See http://www.ukoug.org/events/tom-kyte-seminar-and-asktom-live/ for details, it'll take place on Monday April 16th.When I'm done in Ireland - I'll be doing it all over again in London on Wednesday April 18th.  This is being put on by the UKOUG and details may be found here http://www.ukoug.org/events/tom-kyte-seminar/.Lastly - I'll be going from London to Las Vegas for IOUG's Collaborate.  I'll be doing a day of Real World Performance with Andrew Holdsworth and Graham Wood.  If you are going to Collaborate and want to spend all day Sunday in a technical session (probably cheaper than the tables....) - you might want to check it out.  Details on the session can be found here: http://events.ioug.org/p/cm/ld/fid=31#realHope to see you at one of the events... (well, I won't really see anyone at the first event but you know what I mean)

  • Anyone been successful changing their career without having to start over from scratch?

    - by Awaken
I posted a similar question on careeroverflow, but stackoverflow is just way more active and has way more users, so hopefully someone out there can help answer. I am currently an embedded developer in the defense/aerospace world for a big company. While I like the benefits and the pay, it just isn't keeping me happy. The Paul Graham article: How To Do What You Love really struck home. The problem I face are my golden handcuffs. When I look at jobs out there, they all want 5+ years experience in that language with expertise in framework/tool/server A,B,C, etc... I have worked in C and C++ on the job (in a real-time embedded environment) with some small things in C# and Java. I'm learning Ruby now to expand my knowledge, but I don't consider myself an expert in anything right now. I'd love to work on desktop applications or web apps. Is it possible for someone like me to make the switch without going back to the start line? I'd love to leave the huge bureaucracy and work with some great developers. I'd be willing to work late and take a modest pay cut, but that isn't so clear just from a resume. For those that have altered their career path, how did you do it? For those people who are in charge of hiring, what can I do to help myself?

  • Hack a Linksys Router into a Ambient Data Monitor

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you have a data source (like a weather report, bus schedule, or other changing data set) you can pull it and display it with an ambient data monitor; this fun build combines a hacked Linksys router and a modified toy bus to display transit arrival times. John Graham-Cumming wanted to keep an eye on the current bus arrival time tables without constantly visiting the web site to check them. His workaround turns a hacked Linksys router, a display, a modified London city bus (you could hack apart a more project-specific enclosure, of course), and a simple bit code that polls the bus schedule’s API, into a cool ambient data monitor that displays the arrival time, in minutes, of the next two buses that will pass by his stop. The whole thing could easily be adapted to another API to display anything from stock prices to weather temps. Hit up the link below for more information on the project. • Are there any concrete examples of where a paralellizing compiler would provide a value-adding benefit?

Paul Graham argues that: It would be great if a startup could give us something of the old Moore's Law back, by writing software that could make a large number of CPUs look to the developer like one very fast CPU. ... I'm looking for a middle ground: is there a real-world problem that you have experienced where a "smart-enough" compiler would have provided a real benefit, i.e that someone would pay for? A good answer is one where there is a process where the computer runs at 100% CPU on a single core for a painful period of time. That time might be 10 seconds, if the task is meant to be quick. It might be 500ms if the task is meant to be interactive. It might be 10 hours. Please describe such a problem. Really, that's all I'm looking for: candidate areas for further investigation. (Hence, raytracing is off the list because all the low-hanging fruit have been feasted upon.) I am not interested in why it cannot be done. There are a million people willing to point to the sound reasons why it cannot be done. Such answers are not useful.

  • Curious: Could LLVM be used for Infocom z-machine code, and if so how? (in general)

    - by jonhendry2
Forgive me if this is a silly question, but I'm wondering if/how LLVM could be used to obtain a higher performance Z-Machine VM for interactive fiction. (If it could be used, I'm just looking for some high-level ideas or suggestions, not a detailed solution.) It might seem odd to desire higher performance for a circa-1978 technology, but apparently Z-Machine games produced by the modern Inform 7 IDE can have performance issues due to the huge number of rules that need to be evaluated with each turn. Thanks! FYI: The Z-machine architecture was reverse-engineered by Graham Nelson and is documented at http://www.inform-fiction.org/zmachine/standards/z1point0/overview.html

I need to print this page: Title: mybook authors: Tom, Graham, Luis, Clarke, George So... what is the best way to do this ? 1) Simple join like this: Select book.title, author.name From book, author WHERE ( author.book_id = book.id ) AND ( book.id = 342 ) 2) For avoid the join, I could make 2 simple query: Select title FROM book WHERE id = 342 Select name FROM author WHERE book_id = 342 What is the most efficient way ?

Hello, I seem to have a problem deploying django with mod_wsgi. In the past I've used mod_python but I want to make the change. I have been using Graham Dumpleton notes here http://code.google.com/p/modwsgi/wiki/IntegrationWithDjango1, but it still seem to not work. I get a Internal Server Error. django.wsgi file: import os import sys sys.path.append('/var/www/html') sys.path.append('/var/www/html/c2duo_crm') os.environ['DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE'] = 'c2duo_crm.settings' import django.core.handlers.wsgi application = django.core.handlers.wsgi.WSGIHandler() WSGIScriptAlias / /var/www/html/c2duo_crm/apache/django.wsgi Apache httpd file: <Directory /var/www/html/c2duo_crm/apache> Order allow, deny Allow from all </Directory> In my apache error log, it says I have this error This is not all of it, but I've got the most important part: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/.python-eggs' [Thu Mar 03 14:59:25 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] [Thu Mar 03 14:59:25 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] The Python egg cache directory is currently set to: [Thu Mar 03 14:59:25 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] [Thu Mar 03 14:59:25 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] /.python-eggs [Thu Mar 03 14:59:25 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] [Thu Mar 03 14:59:25 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Perhaps your account does not have write access to this directory? You can [Thu Mar 03 14:59:25 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] change the cache directory by setting the PYTHON_EGG_CACHE environment [Thu Mar 03 14:59:25 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] variable to point to an accessible directory.

  • Data Quality and Master Data Management Resources

    - by Dejan Sarka
Many companies or organizations do regular data cleansing. When you cleanse the data, the data quality goes up to some higher level. The data quality level is determined by the amount of work invested in the cleansing. As time passes, the data quality deteriorates, and you need to repeat the cleansing process. If you spend an equal amount of effort as you did with the previous cleansing, you can expect the same level of data quality as you had after the previous cleansing. And then the data quality deteriorates over time again, and the cleansing process starts over and over again. The idea of Data Quality Services is to mitigate the cleansing process. While the amount of time you need to spend on cleansing decreases, you will achieve higher and higher levels of data quality. While cleansing, you learn what types of errors to expect, discover error patterns, find domains of correct values, etc. You don’t throw away this knowledge. You store it and use it to find and correct the same issues automatically during your next cleansing process. The following figure shows this graphically. The idea of master data management, which you can perform with Master Data Services (MDS), is to prevent data quality from deteriorating. Once you reach a particular quality level, the MDS application—together with the defined policies, people, and master data management processes—allow you to maintain this level permanently. This idea is shown in the following picture. OK, now you know what DQS and MDS are about. You can imagine the importance on maintaining the data quality. Here are some resources that help you preparing and executing the data quality (DQ) and master data management (MDM) activities. Books Dejan Sarka and Davide Mauri: Data Quality and Master Data Management with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 – a general introduction to MDM, MDS, and data profiling. Matching explained in depth. Dejan Sarka, Matija Lah and Grega Jerkic: MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-463): Building Data Warehouses with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 – I wrote quite a few chapters about DQ and MDM, and introduced also SQL Server 2012 DQS. Thomas Redman: Data Quality: The Field Guide – you should start with this book. Thomas Redman is the father of DQ and MDM. Tyler Graham: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Master Data Services – MDS in depth from a product team mate. Arkady Maydanchik: Data Quality Assessment – data profiling in depth. Tamraparni Dasu, Theodore Johnson: Exploratory Data Mining and Data Cleaning – advanced data profiling with data mining. Forthcoming presentations I am presenting a DQS and MDM seminar at PASS SQL Rally Amsterdam 2013: Wednesday, November 6th, 2013: Enterprise Information Management with SQL Server 2012 – a good kick start to your first DQ and / or MDM project. Courses Data Quality and Master Data Management with SQL Server 2012 – I wrote a 2-day course for SolidQ. If you are interested in this course, which I could also deliver in a shorter seminar way, you can contact your closes SolidQ subsidiary, or, of course, me directly on addresses [email protected] or [email protected]. This course could also complement the existing courseware portfolio of training providers, which are welcome to contact me as well. Start improving the quality of your data now!

  • What do you mean by the expressiveness in a programming language?

    - by prosseek
I see a lot of the word 'expressiveness' when people want to stress one language is better than the other. But I don't see exactly what they mean by it. Is it the verboseness/succinctness? I mean, if one language can write down something shorter than the other, does that mean expressiveness? Please refer to my other question - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2411772/article-about-code-density-as-a-measure-of-programming-language-power Is it the power of the language? Paul Graham says that one language is more powerful than the other language in a sense that one language can do that the other language can't do (for example, LISP can do something with macro that the other language can't do). Is it just something that makes life easier? Regular expression can be one of the examples. Is it a different way of solving the same problem: something like SQL to solve the search problem? What do you think about the expressiveness of a programming language? Can you show the expressiveness using some code? What's the relationship with the expressiveness and DSL? Do people come up with DSL to get the expressiveness?
