  • Oracle Coherence, Split-Brain and Recovery Protocols In Detail

    - by Ricardo Ferreira
This article provides a high level conceptual overview of Split-Brain scenarios in distributed systems. It will focus on a specific example of cluster communication failure and recovery in Oracle Coherence. This includes a discussion on the witness protocol (used to remove failed cluster members) and the panic protocol (used to resolve Split-Brain scenarios). Note that the removal of cluster members does not necessarily indicate a Split-Brain condition. Oracle Coherence does not (and cannot) detect a Split-Brain as it occurs, the condition is only detected when cluster members that previously lost contact with each other regain contact. Cluster Topology and Configuration In order to create an good didactic for the article, let's assume a cluster topology and configuration. In this example we have a six member cluster, consisting of one JVM on each physical machine. The member IDs are as follows: Member ID  IP Address  1  10.149.155.76  2  10.149.155.77  3  10.149.155.236  4  10.149.155.75  5  10.149.155.79  6  10.149.155.78 Members 1, 2, and 3 are connected to a switch, and members 4, 5, and 6 are connected to a second switch. There is a link between the two switches, which provides network connectivity between all of the machines. Member 1 is the first member to join this cluster, thus making it the senior member. Member 6 is the last member to join this cluster. Here is a log snippet from Member 6 showing the complete member set: 2010-02-26 15:27:57.390/3.062 Oracle Coherence GE 3.5.3/465p2 <Info> (thread=main, member=6): Started DefaultCacheServer... In a production setting, this type of communication failure can have many root causes, including (but not limited to) network failures, excessive GC, high CPU utilization, swapping/virtual memory, and exceeding maximum network bandwidth. In addition, this type of failure is not necessarily indicative of a split brain. Any communication failure will be logged in this fashion. Member 2 logs a communication failure with Member 5: 2010-02-26 15:30:32.638/196.928 Oracle Coherence GE 3.5.3/465p2 <Warning> (thread=PacketPublisher, member=2): Timeout while delivering a packet; requesting the departure confirmation for Member(Id=5, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:49.095, Address=10.149.155.79:8088, MachineId=1103, Location=site:usdhcp.oraclecorp.com,machine:dhcp-burlington6-4fl-east-10-149,process:3229, Role=CoherenceServer) by MemberSet(Size=2, BitSetCount=2 Member(Id=1, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:06.931, Address=10.149.155.76:8088, MachineId=1100, Location=site:usdhcp.oraclecorp.com,machine:dhcp-burlington6-4fl-east-10-149,process:511, Role=CoherenceServer) Member(Id=4, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:39.574, Address=10.149.155.75:8088, MachineId=1099, Location=process:800, Role=CoherenceServer) ) The Coherence clustering protocol (TCMP) is a reliable transport mechanism built on UDP. In order for the protocol to be reliable, it requires an acknowledgement (ACK) for each packet delivered. If a packet fails to be acknowledged within the configured timeout period, the Coherence cluster member will log a packet timeout (as seen in the log message above). When this occurs, the cluster member will consult with other members to determine who is at fault for the communication failure. If the witness members agree that the suspect member is at fault, the suspect is removed from the cluster. If the witnesses unanimously disagree, the accuser is removed. This process is known as the witness protocol. Since Member 2 cannot communicate with Member 5, it selects two witnesses (Members 1 and 4) to determine if the communication issue is with Member 5 or with itself (Member 2). However, Member 4 is on the switch that is no longer accessible by Members 1, 2 and 3; thus a packet timeout for member 4 is recorded as well: 2010-02-26 15:30:35.648/199.938 Oracle Coherence GE 3.5.3/465p2 <Warning> (thread=PacketPublisher, member=2): Timeout while delivering a packet; requesting the departure confirmation for Member(Id=4, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:39.574, Address=10.149.155.75:8088, MachineId=1099, Location=process:800, Role=CoherenceServer) by MemberSet(Size=2, BitSetCount=2 Member(Id=1, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:06.931, Address=10.149.155.76:8088, MachineId=1100, Location=site:usdhcp.oraclecorp.com,machine:dhcp-burlington6-4fl-east-10-149,process:511, Role=CoherenceServer) Member(Id=6, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:58.635, Address=10.149.155.78:8088, MachineId=1102, Location=process:228, Role=CoherenceServer) ) Member 1 has the ability to confirm the departure of member 4, however Member 6 cannot as it is also inaccessible. At the same time, Member 3 sends a request to remove Member 6, which is followed by a report from Member 3 indicating that Member 6 has departed the cluster: 2010-02-26 15:30:35.706/199.996 Oracle Coherence GE 3.5.3/465p2 <D5> (thread=Cluster, member=2): MemberLeft request for Member 6 received from Member(Id=3, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:24.892, Address=10.149.155.236:8088, MachineId=1260, Location=site:usdhcp.oraclecorp.com,machine:dhcp-burlington6-4fl-east-10-149,process:32459, Role=CoherenceServer) 2010-02-26 15:30:35.709/199.999 Oracle Coherence GE 3.5.3/465p2 <D5> (thread=Cluster, member=2): MemberLeft notification for Member 6 received from Member(Id=3, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:24.892, Address=10.149.155.236:8088, MachineId=1260, Location=site:usdhcp.oraclecorp.com,machine:dhcp-burlington6-4fl-east-10-149,process:32459, Role=CoherenceServer) The log for Member 3 determines how Member 6 departed the cluster: 2010-02-26 15:30:35.161/191.694 Oracle Coherence GE 3.5.3/465p2 <Warning> (thread=PacketPublisher, member=3): Timeout while delivering a packet; requesting the departure confirmation for Member(Id=6, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:58.635, Address=10.149.155.78:8088, MachineId=1102, Location=process:228, Role=CoherenceServer) by MemberSet(Size=2, BitSetCount=2 Member(Id=1, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:06.931, Address=10.149.155.76:8088, MachineId=1100, Location=site:usdhcp.oraclecorp.com,machine:dhcp-burlington6-4fl-east-10-149,process:511, Role=CoherenceServer) Member(Id=2, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:17.847, Address=10.149.155.77:8088, MachineId=1101, Location=site:usdhcp.oraclecorp.com,machine:dhcp-burlington6-4fl-east-10-149,process:296, Role=CoherenceServer) ) 2010-02-26 15:30:35.165/191.698 Oracle Coherence GE 3.5.3/465p2 <Info> (thread=Cluster, member=3): Member departure confirmed by MemberSet(Size=2, BitSetCount=2 Member(Id=1, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:06.931, Address=10.149.155.76:8088, MachineId=1100, Location=site:usdhcp.oraclecorp.com,machine:dhcp-burlington6-4fl-east-10-149,process:511, Role=CoherenceServer) Member(Id=2, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:17.847, Address=10.149.155.77:8088, MachineId=1101, Location=site:usdhcp.oraclecorp.com,machine:dhcp-burlington6-4fl-east-10-149,process:296, Role=CoherenceServer) ); removing Member(Id=6, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:58.635, Address=10.149.155.78:8088, MachineId=1102, Location=process:228, Role=CoherenceServer) In this case, Member 3 happened to select two witnesses that it still had connectivity with (Members 1 and 2) thus resulting in a simple decision to remove Member 6. Each member in the cluster is connected to at least one other member, which (if at all possible) is running on a different physical box. This connection is not used for any data transfer, only heartbeat communications are sent once a second per each link. In the latter cluster, Member 4 is promoted to senior member. The connection between the two switches is restored at 15:33. Upon the restoration of the connection, the cluster members immediately receive cluster heartbeats from the two senior members. In the case of Members 1, 2, and 3, the following is logged: 2010-02-26 15:33:14.970/369.066 Oracle Coherence GE 3.5.3/465p2 <Warning> (thread=Cluster, member=1): The member formerly known as Member(Id=4, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:30:35.341, Address=10.149.155.75:8088, MachineId=1099, Location=process:800, Role=CoherenceServer) has been forcefully evicted from the cluster, but continues to emit a cluster heartbeat; henceforth, the member will be shunned and its messages will be ignored. Likewise for Members 4, 5, and 6: 2010-02-26 15:33:14.343/336.890 Oracle Coherence GE 3.5.3/465p2 <Warning> (thread=Cluster, member=4): The member formerly known as Member(Id=1, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:30:31.64, Address=10.149.155.76:8088, MachineId=1100, Location=site:usdhcp.oraclecorp.com,machine:dhcp-burlington6-4fl-east-10-149,process:511, Role=CoherenceServer) has been forcefully evicted from the cluster, but continues to emit a cluster heartbeat; henceforth, the member will be shunned and its messages will be ignored. This message indicates that a senior heartbeat is being received from members that were previously removed from the cluster, in other words, something that should not be possible. For this reason, the recipients of these messages will initially ignore them. After several iterations of these messages, the existence of multiple clusters is acknowledged, thus triggering the panic protocol to reconcile this situation. When the presence of more than one cluster (i.e. Split-Brain) is detected by a Coherence member, the panic protocol is invoked in order to resolve the conflicting clusters and consolidate into a single cluster. The protocol consists of the removal of smaller clusters until there is one cluster remaining. In the case of equal size clusters, the one with the older Senior Member will survive. Member 1, being the oldest member, initiates the protocol: 2010-02-26 15:33:45.970/400.066 Oracle Coherence GE 3.5.3/465p2 <Warning> (thread=Cluster, member=1): An existence of a cluster island with senior Member(Id=4, Timestamp=2010-02-26 15:27:39.574, Address=10.149.155.75:8088, MachineId=1099, Location=process:800, Role=CoherenceServer) containing 3 nodes have been detected. • Redirect 301 Transfer to New Domain Output URL is Ugly

    - by Anup
I am moving my blog to a new domain. I am trying to do this through .htaccess. While the redirect is okay - the output URL is 'ugly' example in old domain .htaccess file: redirect 301 /archives/2009/06/02/hello-world/ http://indiapoint.net/archives/2009/06/02/hello-world/ So if we click http://www.i3pep.org/archives/2009/06/02/hello-world/ the redirect is to http://indiapoint.net/archives/2009/06/02/hello-world/?year=2009&monthnum=06&day=02&name=hello-world&page= Please suggest what should be done thanks Anup

  • Windows 2003 print services for unix causing CUPS "lpd_command returning 1"

    - by Stephen P. Schaefer
We have several Windows 2003 servers with print services for Unix on them, and which allow Linux machines running CUPS to use printers defined to CUPS with the URI lpd://printer_server/printer_queue_name - they work. An attempt to provide different printers on a different Windows 2003 server with print services for Unix newly enabled causes CUPS to behave like this: a newly defined printer will be in state "Idle". An attempt to print causes CUPS to change the printer state to "Disabled". In /var/log/cups/error_log, the relevant messages appear to be D [01/Dec/2012:06:14:18 -0800] [Job 16] lpd_command 02 hp775cm_ps D [01/Dec/2012:06:14:18 -0800] [Job 16] Sending command string (16 bytes)... D [01/Dec/2012:06:14:18 -0800] [Job 16] Reading command status... D [01/Dec/2012:06:14:18 -0800] [Job 16] lpd_command returning 1 E [01/Dec/2012:06:14:18 -0800] PID 18786 stopped with status 1! Since my Linux boxes can print to other printers via other Windows 2003 print spoolers, I'm wondering what obscure Windows component could be causing this. I don't think it is Windows firewall, since nmap sees the lpd port (515) open on the server. telnet to the server at port 515 declares Connected to server.internal.example.com (10.22.33.44). Escape character is '^]' Connection closed by foreign host. Windows clients successfully print to the CIFS/SMB share of the hp755cm_ps printer. What other reasons are there for Windows to refuse an lpd request?

  • Is there a remote file transfer command that preserves nanosecond timestamps?

    - by Denver Gingerich
    I've tried transferring files using scp and rsync on Ubuntu 10.04, but neither of them preserves more than second precision. Here's an example: $ touch test1 $ scp -p test1 localhost:test2 $ ls -l --full-time test* -rw-r--r-- 1 user user 0 2011-01-14 18:46:06.579717282 -0500 test1 -rw-r--r-- 1 user user 0 2011-01-14 18:46:06.000000000 -0500 test2 $ cp -p test1 test2 $ ls -l --full-time test* -rw-r--r-- 1 user user 0 2011-01-14 18:46:06.579717282 -0500 test1 -rw-r--r-- 1 user user 0 2011-01-14 18:46:06.579717282 -0500 test2 $ A straight copy works fine, but scp truncates the timestamp. Are there any tools (preferably similar to scp or rsync in their usage) that do remote file transfers while preserving nanosecond timestamps? I could write a hacky script to do it, but I'd rather not.

  • configuring JRun

    - by Lucien
We are running JRun 4 and have lots of crashes. I am trying to understand where the problems are coming from and have modified the jrun.xml file to enable metrics logging. This is what I'm seeing... 01/06 15:07:27 metrics Web threads (busy/total/delayed): 2/100/0 Sessions: 0 Total Memory=70720 Free=7464 01/06 15:08:27 metrics Web threads (busy/total/delayed): 1/100/0 Sessions: 0 Total Memory=66944 Free=9199 01/06 15:09:27 metrics Web threads (busy/total/delayed): 3/100/0 Sessions: 0 Total Memory=67456 Free=9644 01/06 15:10:27 metrics Web threads (busy/total/delayed): 3/100/0 Sessions: 0 Total Memory=63360 Free=8368 The book I've been reading (Adobe Coldfusion Anthology, Apress) suggests the "busy" number is the free memory in MB. The Adobe documentation says it's "Threads currently running". Which is correct? Also, what does all this mean? If I'm reading it correctly, I have 100 total threads, and 3 busy ones. So what are the other 97 threads doing if they are neither busy nor delayed?

So what might have gone wrong? The same L2TP service works flawlessly on iOS 7, MacOS 10.8, and Windows 7, there is no disconnection issue on those OSes. Thank you!

  • Apache server completely freezes until it gets restarted

    - by nbv4
My server does this every few days. What sucks is that it always seems to do this right after I go to bed, so when I wake up, I'm greeted with the fact that my server has been down for the past 6 or 7 hours. When I first noticed this, I added a cronjob that tries to restart the server every 15 minutes, but I guess that didn't fix it. Once I noticed the server was down, I can this command: /etc/init.d/apache2 restart * Restarting web server apache2 apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName ... waiting ...........................................................apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName httpd (pid 17597) already running ...which is odd, because a restart should restart the server, even if it's already running, correct? I eventually had to "stop" then "start" to get it working again. I then looked through the logs, and found something very weird. It seems that around the time the server crashed, the logs have entries that are wildly out of order. It looks a little like this: xx.xxx.xxx.x - - [21/Apr/2010:06:32:05 -0400] "GET / blah" xx.xxx.xxx.x - - [21/Apr/2010:06:51:25 -0400] "GET / blah" x.xx.xxx.xxx - - [21/Apr/2010:06:38:23 -0400] "GET / blah" xxx.xx.xx.xx - - [21/Apr/2010:06:31:56 -0400] "GET / blah" xxx.xx.xx.xx - - [21/Apr/2010:06:51:49 -0400] "GET / blah" xx.xx.xxx.xx - - [21/Apr/2010:06:33:20 -0400] "GET / blah" I don't think the problem is memory, because this: tells me that right before the crash, memory usage is fine. I'm running apache with the worker mpm, here are the settings for that: <IfModule mpm_worker_module> StartServers 1 MaxClients 100 MinSpareThreads 5 MaxSpareThreads 10 ThreadsPerChild 10 MaxRequestsPerChild 3000 </IfModule> This apache server is running a bunch of stuff, but most of the traffic comes from a django project I'm hosting, that uses mod_wsgi. There also is a simple machines forum that is running off of mod_fcgid. Those setting are below: <IfModule mod_fcgid.c> MaxRequestsPerProcess 500 MaxProcessCount 3 AddHandler fcgid-script .php .fcgi AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl FCGIWrapper "/usr/bin/php-cgi" .php </IfModule> Anyone know of anything else I can check? I've just about tweaked every single setting I can think of, yet these freezes still happen.

  • using munin-plugins-rails to monitor rails app perfromance

I have been trying to configure munin-plugins-rails to monitor the performance of our rails apps from Munin. The graphs appear, but no data is shown in the graphs. The log files show Error output from : 2013/06/27-15:39:06 [5540] Request-log-analyzer, by Willem van Bergen and $ 2013/06/27-15:39:06 [5540] Website: http://railsdoctors.com I have tried running Request-log-analyzer manually and pointing it at the production log file, and this reports as % for every item. There is data in the log file. I have tried changing the version of the gems installed, and also the type of the log file, but no luck. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

  • php soapclient responds as 'null' but xml response is ok using __getLastResponse

    - by Roger S
    I'm looking for help with a php soapclient call: The call is to a remote panel and I want to pull off the log data. There are various services published via the WSDL and I am able to use several with no issues. Here's the list: array(12) { [0]=> string(77) "GetGPTimerChannelsResponse GetGPTimerChannels(GetGPTimerChannels $parameters)" [1]=> string(74) "GetGPTimerChannelResponse GetGPTimerChannel(GetGPTimerChannel $parameters)" [2]=> string(74) "SetGPTimerChannelResponse SetGPTimerChannel(SetGPTimerChannel $parameters)" [3]=> string(47) "GetSlaveResponse GetSlave(GetSlave $parameters)" [4]=> string(71) "GetLogDataInlineResponse GetLogDataInline(GetLogDataInline $parameters)" [5]=> string(71) "GetLogItemInlineResponse GetLogItemInline(GetLogItemInline $parameters)" [6]=> string(59) "GetAlarmListResponse GetAlarmList(GetAlarmList $parameters)" [7]=> string(50) "GetSyslogResponse GetSyslog(GetSyslog $parameters)" [8]=> string(47) "SetSlaveResponse SetSlave(SetSlave $parameters)" [9]=> string(53) "GetVersionResponse GetVersion(GetVersion $parameters)" [10]=> string(53) "GetTDBInfoResponse GetTDBInfo(GetTDBInfo $parameters)" [11]=> string(53) "GetLogItemResponse GetLogItem(GetLogItem $parameters)" } I am trying to use the GetLogDataInline service which requires four parameters - these I'm passing as an array and all seems OK when doing the connection (the request/response takes around 30 seconds to process). When I look at a var_dump / print_r of the result, it returns NULL, whereas when I do a call to the __getLastResponse all of the data I need to populate my local database is there. Below is the code for the soapclient call: $client = new soapclient ("http://192.168.1.126/cgi-bin/cgi.cgi?WSDL", array("trace" => 1, "exceptions" => true, "cache_wsdl" => WSDL_CACHE_NONE, "features" => SOAP_SINGLE_ELEMENT_ARRAYS )); $params = array ( "ResponseType" => "Xml", "Step" => 15, "Start" => "2012-06-14T12:00:00+01:00", "End" => "2012-06-14T23:59:45+01:00" ); $result = $client -> GetLogDataInline ($params); An extract from the var_dump / __getLastResponse is: var_dump($client) object(SoapClient)#1 (4) { ["trace"]= int(1) ["_features"]= int(1) ["_soap_version"]= int(1) ["sdl"]= resource(4) of type (Unknown) } var_dump($result) NULL __getLastResponse 15 2012-06-14T12:00:00+01:00 2012-06-14T23:59:45+01:00 External Temperature Workshop Lux Level Electricity Pulse 100wh Workshop PIR Active Boiler Flow Temp Outside Lux Workshop_Light_Override_Hours Water Consumption (Litres) Electricity kWh Consumption Water Consumption M3 Gas kWh Consumption Outside Lighting Heating Effective Setpoint Router Reset Workshop Lighting State Heating Run Hours Heating On Receptin Percent RH Reception Temp Reception RH Reception Temp 2012-06-14T12:00:00+01:00 -85.6 2.1 -1.0 Off -91.5 13.8 0.0 -1.0 0.0 0.0 -0.1 Off 21.0 Off Off 0.0 Off 53.0 22.0 53.0 22.0 2012-06-14T12:00:15+01:00 -85.4 2.1 -1.0 Off -91.8 13.8 0.0 -1.0 0.0 0.0 -0.1 Off 21.0 Off Off 0.0 Off 53.0 22.0 53.0 22.0 2012-06-14T12:00:30+01:00 -85.4 2.1 -1.0 Off -91.8 13.8 0.0 -1.0 0.0 0.0 -0.1 Off 21.0 Off Off 0.0 Off 53.0 22.0 53.0 22.0 2012-06-14T12:00:45+01:00 -85.4 2.1 -1.0 Off -91.5 13.7 0.0 -1.0 0.0 0.0 -0.1 Off 21.0 Off Off 0.0 Off 54.0 22.0 54.0 22.0 (this should be xml but doesn't appear to have copied correctly) If you've got this far, thanks for taking the time.   • Why would 70-persistent-net.rules have no effect?

    - by Wes Felter
    I've got a saucy server with a lot of NICs and they end up with weird names like "rename19". I know interface names can be changed by modifying the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file. The first clue that something is wrong is that that file did not exist even though it's supposed to be created automatically. So I decided to write my own based on advice from Linux From Scratch: ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:06:00.0", NAME="eth0" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:06:00.1", NAME="eth1" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:06:00.2", NAME="eth2" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:06:00.3", NAME="eth3" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:0c:00.0", NAME="mezz0" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:0c:00.1", NAME="mezz1" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:1b:00.0", NAME="slot1a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:1b:00.1", NAME="slot1b" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:20:00.0", NAME="slot2a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:20:00.1", NAME="slot2b" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:11:00.0", NAME="slot3a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:11:00.1", NAME="slot3b" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:8b:00.0", NAME="slot4a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:8b:00.1", NAME="slot4b" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:90:00.0", NAME="slot5a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:90:00.1", NAME="slot5b" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:95:00.0", NAME="slot6a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:95:00.1", NAME="slot6b" (I'm matching on PCI IDs instead of MAC addresses because I have multiple identical machines that I want to apply this configuration to.) After rebooting, nothing has changed. It's like these rules aren't even being read. There's not much going on in dmesg either: $ dmesg | grep udev [ 3.196629] systemd-udevd[323]: starting version 204 [ 6.719140] systemd-udevd[550]: starting version 204 [ 38.695050] init: udev-fallback-graphics main process (1658) terminated with status 1

  • cannot boot ubuntu 13.10 with my usb, Can i change the kernal on my laptop to run it?

    - by Carlos Dunick
Currently i am running 12.04 and looking for an upgrade to 13.10 I first tried a bootable 64bit usb and failed. With the message saying "Kernal requires an x86-64 CPU but only detected an I686 CPU Unable to boot please use a kernal appropriate for your CPU" then tried 32bit and same message came up. Is this due to my laptop simply being to slow? or can/should i change the kernal somehow? • How to determine if two strings are sufficiently close?

    - by A.06
We say that we can "hop" from the word w1 to the word w2 if they are "sufficiently close". We define w2 to be sufficiently close to w1 if one of the following holds: w2 is obtained from w1 by deleting one letter. w2 is obtained from w1 by replacing one of the letters in w1 by some letter that appears to its right in w1 and which is also to its right in alphabetical order. I have no idea how to check if 2. is fulfilled. To check if 1. is possible this is my function: bool check1(string w1, string w2){ if(w2.length - w1.length != 1){ return false; } for(int i = 0,int j = 0;i < w2.length;i++;j++){ if(w2[i] == w1[j]){//do nothing } else if(i == j){ j++; } else{ return false; } } return true; } Given two words w1 and w2, how do we check if we can 'hop' from w1 to w2?

  • Why does my laptop resume immediately after suspend?

    - by Igor Zinov'yev
I seem to be having some problem with suspend mode. Every time I try to suspend my laptop, it just locks the screen. Or maybe it successfully suspends just to resume only an instant after. What could cause such a behaviour? I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04 with the 3.2.0-25 kernel on a HP dv5-1178er Pavilion laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo). Here are the relevant log sections: kern.log: Jun 1 10:42:21 igor-laptop kernel: [ 2225.131171] PM: Syncing filesystems ... done. • Android XMLRPC Fault Code

    - by sameersegal
Hey, We have been using XMLRPC for android and it was working well until we got our hands dirty with Base64 encoding for byte[] (images) -- (we did base64_string.replace("/","$$") for transmission). We have tried undoing the changes and its looking an XMLRPC error. We are getting the following error in the DDMS: 06-10 23:27:02.970: DEBUG/Test(343): org.xmlrpc.android.XMLRPCFault: XMLRPC Fault: [code 0] 06-10 23:27:02.970: DEBUG/Test(343): at org.xmlrpc.android.XMLRPCClient.callEx(XMLRPCClient.java:308) 06-10 23:27:02.970: DEBUG/Test(343): at org.xmlrpc.android.XMLRPCMethod.run(XMLRPCMethod.java:33) Just before this I checked the body (xml message -- which is perfect) and the response received: 06-10 23:27:02.940: INFO/System.out(343): Response received: org.apache.http.message.BasicHttpResponse@437762f8 Since it the message is not even reaching our cloud, the issue is with XMLRPC for android. Any help will be most appreciated. Thanks Best Sameer

  • Reverse engineering windows mobile live search CellID location awareness protocol (yikes)...

    - by Jean-Charles
    I wasn't sure of how to form the question so I apologize if the title is misleading. Additionally, you may want to get some coffee and take a seat for this one ... It's long. Basically, I'm trying to reverse engineer the protocol used by the Windows Mobile Live Search application to get location based on cellID. Before I go on, I am aware of other open source services (such as OpenCellID) but this is more for the sake of education and a bit for redundancy. According to the packets I captured, a POST request is made to ... mobile.search.live.com/positionlookupservice_1/service.aspx ... with a few specific headers (agent, content-length, etc) and no body. Once this goes through, the server sends back a 100-Continue response. At this point, the application submits this data (I chopped off the packet header): 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 05 55 54 ........UT 46 2d 38 05 65 6e 2d 55 53 05 65 6e 2d 55 53 01 F-8.en-US.en-US. 06 44 65 76 69 63 65 05 64 75 6d 6d 79 01 06 02 .Device.dummy... 50 4c 08 0e 52 65 76 65 72 73 65 47 65 6f 63 6f PL..ReverseGeoco 64 65 01 07 0b 47 50 53 43 68 69 70 49 6e 66 6f de...GPSChipInfo 01 20 06 09 43 65 6c 6c 54 6f 77 65 72 06 03 43 . ..CellTower..C 47 49 08 03 4d 43 43 b6 02 07 03 4d 4e 43 03 34 GI..MCC....MNC.4 31 30 08 03 4c 41 43 cf 36 08 02 43 49 fd 01 00 10..LAC.6..CI... 00 00 00 ... Now, here is what I've determined so far: All strings are prepended with one byte that is the decimal equivalent of their length. There seem to be three different casts that are used throughout the request and response. They show up as one byte before the length byte. I've concluded that the three types map out as follows: 0x06 - parent element (subsequent values are children, closed with 0x00) 0x07 - string 0x08 - int? Based on these determinations, here is what the request and response look like in a more readable manner (values surrounded by brackets denote length and values surrounded by parenthesis denote a cast): \0x00\0x00\0x00\0x01\0x00\0x00\0x00 [5]UTF-8 [5]en-US [5]en-US \0x01 [6]Device [5]dummy \0x01 (6)[2]PL (8)[14]ReverseGeocode\0x01 (7)[11]GPSChipInfo[1]\0x20 (6)[9]CellTower (6)[3]CGI (8)[3]MCC\0xB6\0x02 //310 (7)[3]MNC[3]410 //410 (8)[3]LAC\0xCF\0x36 //6991 (8)[2]CI\0xFD\0x01 //259 \0x00 \0x00 \0x00 \0x00 and.. \0x00\0x00\0x00\0x01\0x00\0x00\0x00 \0x00\0x01 (6)[2]PL (6)[8]Locality (6)[8]Location (7)[3]Lat[9]42.375621 (7)[4]Long[10]-71.158938 \0x00 (7)[6]Radius[9]2000.0000 \0x00 \0x42 //"B" ... At first I thought they were some sort of base level element terminators but I'm not certain. I'm not sure the 7-byte header is, in fact, a seven byte header. I wonder if it's maybe 4 bytes and that the three remaining 0x00s are of some other significance. The trailing 0x00s. Why is it that there is only one on the request but two on the response? The type 8 cast mentioned above ... I can't seem to figure out how those values are being encoded. I added comments to those lines with what the values should correspond to. Any advice on these four points will be greatly appreciated. And yes, these packets were captured in Watertown, MA. :)

  • When my UIViewController accesses an NSArray in my AppDelegate from an IBAction it crashes the progr

    - by JasonClark
I have a couple UIViewControllers that I am trying to access an array inside my AppDelegate. When I use an IBAction UIButton and in that method I access my AppDelegate my program dies silently. Nothing in output or the debugger, it just stops. If I run it several times I can see that it is failing to access the array properly. To investigate this problem I created a very basic app. In my AppDelegate.h I declared and set properties for the array #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @class MyViewController; @interface MyAppDelegate : NSObject <UIApplicationDelegate> { UIWindow *window; MyViewController *viewController; NSArray *images; } @property (nonatomic, retain) NSArray *images; @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UIWindow *window; @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet MyViewController *viewController;` In the AppDelegate.m I synthesised and initialized the NSArray (Also made sure the images were added to the Resources folder). @synthesize images; - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions { images = [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"bamboo_nw" ofType:@"jpg"], ..... nil]; NSLog(@"init images size:%i",[images count]); [window addSubview:viewController.view]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; return YES; } In my UIViewController.h I added class, imported header file, declared, and set properties for my AppDelegate pointer. #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import "MyAppDelegate.h" @class MyAppDelegate; @interface MyViewController : UIViewController { MyAppDelegate *mainDelegate; IBOutlet UIButton mybutton; } @property (nonatomic, retain) MyAppDelegate mainDelegate; @property (nonatomic, retain) UIButton *mybutton; -(IBAction) doSomething;` In my UIViewController.m I synthesize and assign my AppDelegate. I set up an IBAction that will log the same count of the NSArray from the AppDelegate. #import "MyViewController.h" #import "MyAppDelegate.h" @implementation MyViewController @synthesize mybutton; - (void)viewDidLoad { mainDelegate = (MyAppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; NSLog(@"vdl images size:%i",[mainDelegate.images count]); [super viewDidLoad]; } -(IBAction) doSomething { NSLog(@"ds images size:%i",[mainDelegate.images count]); } I print the size of the NSArray in the AppDelegate when I create it, in the ViewController when I first assign my AppDelegate pointer, and then as a result of my IBAction. I find that everytime I hit the button the program dies. On the third time I hit the button, I saw that it ran my IBAction but printed my array size as 1 instead of 8. Am I missing something? Also, why don't I get stack traces or anything, the debugger just dies silently? Thanks in advance for any help! • slow DNS resolution

    - by Ehsan
I have a DNS server that resolves all queries for an internal group of servers. It is a bind on CentOS 5.5 (same as RHEL5) and I have set it up to allow recursion and resolve direction without any forwarders. The problem I am facing is that it takes a freakishly long amount of time to resolve a name for the first time. (in the magnitudes of 20 sec) This causes clients to give timeout. When I set it to forward all to Google's public DNS, i.e. 8.8.8.8+8.8.4.4, it works very nicely (within a second). I tried monitoring the traffic on the net to see why it is doing this: [root@ns1 ~]# tcpdump -nnvvvA -s0 udp tcpdump: listening on eth0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 65535 bytes 23:06:36.137797 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 35903, offset 0, flags [none], proto: UDP (17), length: 60) 172.17.1.10.36942 > 172.17.1.4.53: [udp sum ok] 19773+ A? www.paypal.com. Do you think I have setup something wrong here? Interestingly, when I dig directly from the root servers that did not respond, the always respond very fast (showing the firewall/nat is not the issue here). E.g. dig www.paypal.com @192.35.51.30 works perfectly, consistently, and very fast. What do you think about this mystery?

  • Why would paperclip not assign an ID to my uploaded photos?

    - by Trip
I just deployed to a cluster server, and my delayed_jobs recipe was overwritten in the process. I solved that, delayed_jobs is up and running but can't find the ID of images that are uploaded. The images are saved correctly : Processing PhotosController#create (for 173.161.167.41 at 2010-06-01 05:09:14) [POST] Parameters: {"Filename"="1.jpg", "gallery_id"="1298", "action"="create", "amp"=nil, "authenticity_token"="qmbnpwFY8a5E3YtS/4fMWF/Z8evCE4hMxqKVJw0I7Ek=", "Upload"="Submit Query", "controller"="photos", "organization_id"="470", "_hq_channel_session"="BAh7CSIYdXNlcl9jcmVkZW50aWFsc19pZGkHIhV1c2VyX2NyZWRlbnRpYWxzIgGAOGRlZDc0NGJlOWU3NTNlNDFlYmVlMDdjMzIzYjA1ZjQxNGE5ZDY4YjNmYjFmNjNkMDQ2OWY2ZDQyOTljZDhiMDFlNmRkMDljNThmMzBmOWJhMTIwNDhkMDI5MTMxYmU5MDczYjIxZmI4YmQxMDVlMTBmNjZmOWFhODE1ZTBjMGM6EF9jc3JmX3Rva2VuIjFxbWJucHdGWThhNUUzWXRTLzRmTVdGL1o4ZXZDRTRoTXhxS1ZKdzBJN0VrPToPc2Vzc2lvbl9pZCIlMjAwMDQ3ZDQ3ZWUyZTgzODIxYzdjOGI3OTdmZGJiMDM=--ac6aa580262938bf5a4d6b9a740722b680eb5d48", "Filedata"=#} [paperclip] Saving attachments. Anyone know where I could poke and pry from here? UPDATE: I created a clone application on a single server. And there are no problems. The images on the cluster do show up (occassionally). If I keep clicking on the folders that lead to photos, it will 50% of the time return a 404 with it not being able to find the photo, and the other half it will present the photo. So the problem has got to be with the server interaction between the ActiveRecord through multiple servers.

  • Hyper-V Machine drifts time all over, even with NTP

    - by MichaelGG
Resolved The problem was Hyper-V on that machine. I removed Hyper-V, installed VMware Server, ran the same VM. Time sync issues went away (< 100ms difference after a day). My setup is like this: HYV1 - HyperV machine (non domain) - sync irrelevant AD1 - VM AD server on HYV1, sync'd to time.nist.gov. HyperV time sync off. S1 - Physical machine, sync'd to domain. S2 - Physical machine running HyperV, sync'd to domain. V1 - Linux VM machine on S2, sync'd to AD1. No HyperV integration. AD1 and S1 have fine sync -- stripchart shows less than 100ms difference. S2 drifts like crazy. Here's a bit of the stripchart against AD1: 18:33:22 d:+00.0010138s o:+05.4101899s 18:33:24 d:+00.0010138s o:+05.4319765s 18:33:26 d:+00.0000000s o:+05.4788429s 18:33:28 d:+00.0000000s o:+05.6089942s 18:33:30 d:+00.0010138s o:+05.7240269s 18:33:32 d:+00.0000000s o:+06.0421911s 18:33:34 d:+00.0081104s o:+06.5613708s 18:33:37 d:+00.0000000s o:+06.9096594s 18:33:39 d:+00.0000000s o:+06.8867838s 18:33:41 d:+00.0010127s o:+06.8936401s In 20 seconds, it drifted over a second. If I manually reset it to within 1s, within a few minutes it'll be back drifting about 2 seconds. Overnight it went from ~2s to ~5s. The Linux VM inside S2 has perfect sync with AD1. Here's the config: C:\Users\mgg>w32tm /dumpreg /subkey:Parameters Value Name Value Type Value Data ------------------------------------------------------------ ServiceDll REG_EXPAND_SZ %systemroot%\system32\w32time.dll ServiceMain REG_SZ SvchostEntry_W32Time ServiceDllUnloadOnStop REG_DWORD 1 Type REG_SZ NT5DS NtpServer REG_SZ ad01.mydomain ad02.mydomain C:\Users\mgg>w32tm /dumpreg /subkey:Config Value Name Value Type Value Data ----------------------------------------------------------- FrequencyCorrectRate REG_DWORD 4 PollAdjustFactor REG_DWORD 5 LargePhaseOffset REG_DWORD 50000000 SpikeWatchPeriod REG_DWORD 900 LocalClockDispersion REG_DWORD 9 HoldPeriod REG_DWORD 5 PhaseCorrectRate REG_DWORD 1 UpdateInterval REG_DWORD 30000 EventLogFlags REG_DWORD 2 AnnounceFlags REG_DWORD 5 TimeJumpAuditOffset REG_DWORD 28800 MinPollInterval REG_DWORD 2 MaxPollInterval REG_DWORD 8 MaxNegPhaseCorrection REG_DWORD -1 MaxPosPhaseCorrection REG_DWORD -1 MaxAllowedPhaseOffset REG_DWORD 300 I looked at the event log, and apart from warnings about sync (after it gets way out of sync), there's no other warnings. How can I go about troubleshooting this? It's the only machine that is having this problem. All the other machines (physical and virtual) are doing fine. Edit: To clarify: The VM (AD1) has integration turned off and syncs to time.nist.gov. AD1 is fine. It's the physical machine S1 that can't sync to AD1 and drifts all over. All the other physical servers are able to sync to AD1 just fine. Update So, it appears to be an issue of running the VM. The clock slips slowly with the VM off. Turned on, it immediately starts losing seconds. I swt the VM to only use half the resources, and that seems to have slightly mitigated it, for now. Thanks!
