• Rsyslog is not working properly, it does not log anything

  I'm running a Debian server and a couple of days ago my rsyslog started to behave very weird, the daemon is running but it doesn't seem to do anything. Many people use the system but I'm the only one with (legal) root access. I'm using the default rsyslogd configuration (if you think is relevant I'll attach it, but it's the one that comes with the package). And I know this doesn't mean anything, but all looks ok. The system also have an iptables firewall that is very restrictive with incoming / outgoing connections. This is driving me crazy, any idea what is going on here?   I'm trying to get a Citrix receiver installed on to Ubuntu 14.04 (64 bit) following Ubuntu's docs. The first line of instructions say to get these required packages: sudo apt-get install libmotif4:i386 nspluginwrapper lib32z1 libc6-i386 libxp6:i386 libxpm4:i386 libasound2:i386 But if I paste in that line, I get this error: Reading state information... Is there anything I'm missing in there? • How to find location of installed library

  Background: I'm trying to build my program but first I need to set up libraries in netbeans. My project is using GLU and therefore I installed libglu-dev. I didn't note location where the libraries were located and now I can't find them.. I've switched to Linux just a few days ago and so far I'm very content with it, however I couldn't google this one out and becoming frustrated.. Is there way to find out where files of package were installed without running installation again? I mean if I got library xxx and installed it some time ago, is there somecommand xxx that will print this info? I've already tried locate, find and whereis commands but either I'm missing something or I just can't do it correctly.. for libglu, locate returns: /usr/share/bug/libglu1-mesa /usr/share/bug/libglu1-mesa/control /usr/share/bug/libglu1-mesa/script /usr/share/doc/libglu1-mesa /usr/share/doc/libglu1-mesa/changelog.Debian.gz /usr/share/doc/libglu1-mesa/copyright /usr/share/lintian/overrides/libglu1-mesa /var/lib/dpkg/info/libglu1-mesa:i386.list /var/lib/dpkg/info/libglu1-mesa:i386.md5sums /var/lib/dpkg/info/libglu1-mesa:i386.postinst /var/lib/dpkg/info/libglu1-mesa:i386.postrm /var/lib/dpkg/info/libglu1-mesa:i386.shlibs Other two commands fail to find anything. Now locate did it's job but I'm sure none of those paths is where the library actually resides (at least everything I was linking so far was in /usr/lib or usr/local/lib). I also tried changing servers from my local (Danish) to the main server. No luck. It's also keeping me from upgrading alle the other packages. What to do? Update After following instructions in the answer by @lpanebr, it is now stuck at the linux-firmware package. So, maybe it's a more general problem than being related to specific package(s)? Although it did download some packages without problems before getting stuck at linux-firmware.

• How do you guys handle custom yum repository?

  I have a bunch of tools (nagios, munin, puppet, etc...) that gets installed on all my servers. I'm in the process of building a local yum repository. I know most folks just dump all the rpms into a single folder (broken down into the correct path) and then run createrepo inside the directory. However, what would happen if you had to update the rpms? I ask because I was going to throw each software into its own folder. Example one, put all packages inside one folder (custom_software) /admin/software/custom_software/5.4/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/5.4/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/4.6/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/4.6/x86_64 What I'm thinking of ... /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/5.4/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/5.4/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/4.6/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/4.6/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/5.4/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/5.4/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/4.6/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/4.6/x86_64 Ths way, if I had to update to the latest version of puppet, I can save manage the files accordingly.   I just installed Fedora 17. I'm setting up the Android Build Environment and need Java. I downloaded and installed jdk-6u32-linux-amd64.rpm I ran java -version and it spit out the correct version. Well a day or two later i tried my first compile in Fedora 17 and it complained about java and failed. I ran java -version again and low and behold it spits out $ java -version java version "1.7.0_03-icedtea" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (fedora-2.1.fc17.7-x86_64) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode) I'm stumped. I mean, i've run the update/upgrade commands since i installed but i didn't think that updated full version revisions... So, I ran alternatives --config java and that only gave me the java 1.7 version. While digging around more I discovered that the recommended version of Java for the build environment is jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin so I downloaded that from here: Oracle Download When I ran: sudo sh jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin it returned: Unpacking...   I am a linux noob and am trying to install ORacle10g on RHEL5 but am running into difficulties on the requirements stage. The only 2 packages I require is gnome-libs and xscreensaver. I have downloaded both: 'gnome-libs-1.4.1.2.90-44.1.i386.rpm 'xscreensaver-4.18-5.rhel4.11.i386.rpm' But when I try to install them I get dependency errors. I have been trawling sites and forums for 2 days now and am no closer to resolving this and continuing with my Oracle install. To pre-empt possible trouble-shooting questions, here is a list of the dependcies that could not be resolved: For gnome-libs: libdb.so.2(GLIBC_2.0) ORBit libdb.so.2 libllOP.so.0 libORBitCosNaming.so.0 libORBitutil.so.0 libORBit.so.0 libpng.so.2 And it says all the above is needed by package 1:gnome-libs-1.4.1.2.90-44.1.i386(/gnome-libs-1.4.1.2.90-44.1.i386) For xscreensaver: xloadimage is needed by package 1:xscreensaver-4.18-5.rhel4.11.i386(/xscreensaver-4.18-5.rhel4.11.i386) Sorry if I have explained this in a crap way - like I said - linux noob here. • How to install 32-bit libraries using Debian Testing

  Question: What is the way to determine, ahead of time and without doing a full install of 64-bit Debian Testing NETINST, when Debian Testing has 32-bit libraries available and fully working and installable so that the following command works without broken package errors?: apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk The errors that occur when 32-bit libraries are not available, still in some broken state, or whatever is broken are detailed below. I already have concluded that "Just install Stable" is my stop-gap measure for now, but I would like to know the answer to the above question so as to avoid a lengthy installation process only to run into these problems at the very end. Details: I downloaded the 64-bit Debian Testing netinst a couple of days ago. This was "Jessie" built 20131014-06:07 via http://tinyurl.com/lejpa. This is weekly testing build. Yes, I know I should expect problems, and I did. I managed to get it completely installed and was able to invoke into GNOME, but not get past the 32-bit library problem. The problems starts when I attempt to install the 32-bit libraries via: apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk that returns: root@breath:~# apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: ia32-libs : Depends: ia32-libs-i386 but it is not installable ia32-libs-gtk : Depends: ia32-libs-i386 but it is not installable Depends: ia32-libs-gtk-i386 but it is not installable E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I then found an old (2012 is old to me) answer at ia32-libs : Depends: ia32-libs-i386 but it is not installable and even tried what they suggested there which was dpkg --add-architecture i386 apt-get update After executing the above, I tried again but got: root@breath:~# apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Not only is there broken packages, the system doesn't even know what packages are broken, so Debian Stable is my only solution I know of right now. Hence my question above.
