• Error Downloading Metadata from ASMX Service

- by michael.lukatchik
It should be possible (and it looks like it is), but assume I have the following functions in my ASMX web service: [WebMethod(MessageName = "CreateExternalRpt1")] public bool CreateExternalRpt(int iProductId, int iOrderProductId, DateTime dtReportTime, string strReportTitle, string strReportCategory, string strReportPrintType, out string strSnapshot, string strApplicantFirst, string strApplicantLast, string strApplicantMiddle, string strOwnerLast, string strOwnerMiddle, string strOwnerFirst, bool blnCurrentReport, int iOrderId, bool blnFlag, string strCustomerId, string strUserId) { … } [WebMethod(MessageName = "CreateExternalRpt2")] public bool CreateExternalRpt(int iProductId, int iOrderProductId, DateTime dtReportTime, string strReportTitle, string strReportCategory, string strReportPrintType, string strReportSnapshot, string strApplicantFirst, string strApplicantLast, string strApplicantMiddle, string strOwnerLast, string strOwnerMiddle, string strOwnerFirst, bool blnCurrentReport, int iOrderId, bool blnFlag) { … } With both of these functions defined in my web service, my .NET client app can’t download the metadata and instead throws a generic error message “There was an error downloading…”. With one of the above methods removed, the .NET client app can successfully download the metadata. I’ve read that by decorating the WebMethod with a unique name, both functions should be exposed in the service metadata. This isn’t working. What am I missing?

• Eclipse error: This project needs to migrate WTP metadata

- by larf311
We started a Web Project in Eclipse 3.2 a ways back and we've since upgraded to Eclipse 3.4 but now the Project has the error: "This project needs to migrate WTP metadata" We've tried right-clicking and doing the "quick-fix" which is in fact to Migrate WTP Metadata. Unfortunately nothing happens and the error remains. We can delete that error from the Problems and everything works as it should, however, every time we re-import the project from source control, the error re-appears. Any ideas on how to permanently get rid of this error or how to ACTUALLY migrate WTP metadata? UPDATE: Everyone, please vote on the answer that works for you rather than adding your own answer that references a previous person's answer.

• OWB 11gR2 – OLAP and Simba

- by David Allan
Oracle Warehouse Builder was the first ETL product to provide a single integrated and complete environment for managing enterprise data warehouse solutions that also incorporate multi-dimensional schemas. The OWB 11gR2 release provides Oracle OLAP 11g deployment for multi-dimensional models (in addition to support for prior releases of OLAP). This means users can easily utilize Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP (see here for details and cost) which allows you to use the powerful and popular ad hoc query and analysis capabilities of Microsoft Excel PivotTables® and PivotCharts® with your Oracle OLAP business intelligence data. The extensions to the dimensional modeling capabilities have been built on established relational concepts, with the option to seamlessly move from a relational deployment model to a multi-dimensional model at the click of a button. This now means that ETL designers can logically model a complete data warehouse solution using one single tool and control the physical implementation of a logical model at deployment time. As a result data warehouse projects that need to provide a multi-dimensional model as part of the overall solution can be designed and implemented faster and more efficiently. Wizards for dimensions and cubes let you quickly build dimensional models and realize either relationally or as an Oracle database OLAP implementation, both 10g and 11g formats are supported based on a configuration option. The wizard provides a good first cut definition and the objects can be further refined in the editor. Both wizards let you choose the implementation, to deploy to OLAP in the database select MOLAP: multidimensional storage. You will then be asked what levels and attributes are to be defined, by default the wizard creates a level bases hierarchy, parent child hierarchies can be defined in the editor. Once the dimension or cube has been designed there are special mapping operators that make it easy to load data into the objects, below we load a constant value for the total level and the other levels from a source table. Again when the cube is defined using the wizard we can edit the cube and define a number of analytic calculations by using the 'generate calculated measures' option on the measures panel. This lets you very easily add a lot of rich analytic measures to your cube. For example one of the measures is the percentage difference from a year ago which we can see in detail below. You can also add your own custom calculations to leverage the capabilities of the Oracle OLAP option, either by selecting existing template types such as moving averages to defining true custom expressions. The 11g OLAP option now supports percentage based summarization (the amount of data to precompute and store), this is available from the option 'cost based aggregation' in the cube's configuration. Ensure all measure-dimensions level based aggregation is switched off (on the cube-dimension panel) - previously level based aggregation was the only option. The 11g generated code now uses the new unified API as you see below, to generate the code, OWB needs a valid connection to a real schema, this was not needed before 11gR2 and is a new requirement since the OLAP API which OWB uses is not an offline one. Once all of the objects are deployed and the maps executed then we get to the fun stuff! How can we analyze the data? One option which is powerful and at many users' fingertips is using Microsoft Excel PivotTables® and PivotCharts®, which can be used with your Oracle OLAP business intelligence data by utilizing Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP (see Simba site for details of cost). I'll leave the exotic reporting illustrations to the experts (see Bud's demonstration here), but with Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP its very simple to easily access the analytics stored in the database (all built and loaded via the OWB 11gR2 release) and get the regular features of Excel at your fingertips such as using the conditional formatting features for example. That's a very quick run through of the OWB 11gR2 with respect to Oracle 11g OLAP integration and the reporting using Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP. Not a deep-dive in any way but a quick overview to illustrate the design capabilities and integrations possible.

• Backup Meta-Data

- by BuckWoody
I'm working on a PowerShell script to show me the trending durations of my backup activities. The first thing I need is the data, so I looked at the Standard Reports in SQL Server Management Studio, and found a report that suited my needs, so I pulled out the script that it runs and modified it to this T-SQL Script. A few words here - you need to be in the MSDB database for this to run, and you can add a WHERE clause to limit to a database, timeframe, type of backup, whatever. For that matter, I won't use all of the data in this query in my PowerShell script, but it gives me lots of avenues to graph: SELECT distinct t1.name AS 'DatabaseName' ,(datediff( ss, t3.backup_start_date, t3.backup_finish_date)) AS 'DurationInSeconds' ,t3.user_name AS 'UserResponsible' ,t3.name AS backup_name ,t3.description ,t3.backup_start_date ,t3.backup_finish_date ,CASE WHEN t3.type = 'D' THEN 'Database' WHEN t3.type = 'L' THEN 'Log' WHEN t3.type = 'F' THEN 'FileOrFilegroup' WHEN t3.type = 'G' THEN 'DifferentialFile' WHEN t3.type = 'P' THEN 'Partial' WHEN t3.type = 'Q' THEN 'DifferentialPartial' END AS 'BackupType' ,t3.backup_size AS 'BackupSizeKB' ,t6.physical_device_name ,CASE WHEN t6.device_type = 2 THEN 'Disk' WHEN t6.device_type = 102 THEN 'Disk' WHEN t6.device_type = 5 THEN 'Tape' WHEN t6.device_type = 105 THEN 'Tape' END AS 'DeviceType' ,t3.recovery_model FROM sys.databases t1 INNER JOIN backupset t3 ON (t3.database_name = t1.name ) LEFT OUTER JOIN backupmediaset t5 ON ( t3.media_set_id = t5.media_set_id ) LEFT OUTER JOIN backupmediafamily t6 ON ( t6.media_set_id = t5.media_set_id ) ORDER BY backup_start_date DESC I'll munge this into my Excel PowerShell chart script tomorrow. • SQL Server 2012 : Changes to system objects in RC0

- by AaronBertrand
As with every new major milestone, one of the first things I do is check out what has changed under the covers. Since RC0 was released yesterday, I've been poking around at some of the DMV and other system changes. Here is what I have noticed: New objects in RC0 that weren't in CTP3 Quick summary: We see a bunch of new aggregates for use with geography and geometry. I've stayed away from that area of programming so I'm not going to dig into them. There is a new extended procedure called sp_showmemo_xml....(read more)

• List SQL Server Instances using the Registry

- by BuckWoody
I read this interesting article on using PowerShell and the registry, and thought I would modify his information a bit to list the SQL Server Instances on a box. The interesting thing about listing instances this was is that you can touch remote machines, find the instances when they are off and so on. Anyway, here’s the scriptlet I used to find the Instances on my system: $MachineName = '.' $reg = [Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey]::OpenRemoteBaseKey('LocalMachine', $MachineName) $regKey= $reg.OpenSubKey("SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Microsoft SQL Server\\Instance Names\\SQL" ) $regkey.GetValueNames() You can read more of his article to find out the reason for the remote registry call and so forth – there are also security implications here for being able to read the registry. • System Variables, Stored Procedures or Functions for Meta Data

- by BuckWoody
Whenever you want to know something about SQL Server’s configuration, whether that’s the Instance itself or a database, you have a few options. If you want to know “dynamic” data, such as how much memory or CPU is consumed or what a particular query is doing, you should be using the Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) that you can read about here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188754.aspx But if you’re looking for how much memory is installed on the server, the version of the Instance, the drive letters of the backups and so on, you have other choices. The first of these are system variables. You access these with a SELECT statement, and they are useful when you need a discrete value for use, say in another query or to put into a table. You can read more about those here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms173823.aspx You also have a few stored procedures you can use. These often bring back a lot more data, pre-formatted for the screen. You access these with the EXECUTE syntax. It is a bit more difficult to take the data they return and get a single value or place the results in another table, but it is possible. You can read more about those here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187961.aspx Yet another option is to use a system function, which you access with a SELECT statement, which also brings back a discrete value that you can use in a test or to place in another table. You can read about those here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187812.aspx By the way, many of these constructs simply query from tables in the master or msdb databases for the Instance or the system tables in a user database. You can get much of the information there as well, and there are even system views in each database to show you the meta-data dealing with structure – more on that here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186778.aspx Some of these choices are the only way to get at a certain piece of data. But others overlap – you can use one or the other, they both come back with the same data. So, like many Microsoft products, you have multiple ways to do the same thing. And that’s OK – just research what each is used for and how it’s intended to be used, and you’ll be able to select (pun intended) the right choice. • Determining distribution of NULL values

- by AaronBertrand
Today on the twitter hash tag #sqlhelp, @leenux_tux asked: How can I figure out the percentage of fields that don't have data ? After further clarification, it turns out he is after what proportion of columns are NULL. Some folks suggested using a data profiling task in SSIS . There may be some validity to that, but I'm still a fan of sticking to T-SQL when I can, so here is how I would approach it: Create a #temp table or @table variable to store the results. Create a cursor that loops through all...(read more)

• How do I export banshee library settings to another machine?

- by nityabaddha
I am trying to downgrade my distro. The thing is, I have spent some few hours organising my music library and I do not want to lose my database. I have checked 'write meta data to files'. And so, my understanding is, that if I just import those same mp3s into a new library, those files will be arranged in the same order in the library. But this doesn't sound like a safe enough option. I'm moving from 11.10 to 10.04. Any help would be greatly appreciated. newbie

• T-SQL Tuesday #24 : Dude, where's the rest of my procedure?

- by AaronBertrand
This month's T-SQL Tuesday is being hosted by Brad Schulz ( blog ) and the topic is one that should attract a lot of submissions: Procedures and Functions. Last week, I talked about the case against INFORMATION_SCHEMA views - I provided several examples where I feel the INFORMATION_SCHEMA views fall short of the catalog views, and expressed my belief that you are better off programming consistently against the catalog views all the time, instead of only when the INFORMATION_SCHEMA views fail. Having...(read more)

• Geek City: sp_cacheobjects for SQL Server 2012

- by Kalen Delaney
In a post about 4 1/2 years ago , I gave you my version of a replacement for the old pre-2005 pseudotable syscacheobjects . I called it sp_cacheobjects and created it as a view in the master database. With the sp _ prefix, the view can be accessed from any database. When testing this on SQL Server 2012, I noticed that I almost always got a lot more rows back than I was expecting. Even when I added a WHERE clause to limit the database to only the database I was working in, I STILL got way to many...(read more)

• SvcUtil and /dconly generates XSD's for data types NOT marked with the DataContract attribute.

- by Bellerephon
Has anyone ever encountered a problem with Svcutil and the /dconly option where it generates metadata for EVERY data type in an Assembly, even if it is NOT marked with with the [DataContract()] attribute? It also appears to be generating metadata for types only referenced in the code, such as XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas even though these are not a part of the physical assembly that I generated metadata on. Some info: Using the .NET 4.0 version of SvcUtil. Does not matter if class is empty or not. No references are specified in the command line for SvcUtil. Command line: "C:\In Progress Work (Prospective)\Prospective Server\Prospective Server\Management\Prospective.Server.Server.NET40.Debug.AnyCPU.dll" /nologo /t:metadata /d:"C:\In Progress Work (Prospective)\Prospective Server\Prospective Server\Management" /dconly

• Capturing image with WDS is stuck on 'Capturing Windows Image Metadata'

- by user74499
Hello, I'm trying to capture a rather large (100gigs) windows xp partition to a WIM file on an attached USB hard drive. Under 'Task Progress' it's saying 'Capturing Windows image Metadata', which is where it has been for a while (like 1.5 hours) - the blue bar is at the end of the screen, i.e. 100% I can move the windows around the screen so I suspect that the operation hasn't crashed yet but does this part of the process take a long time? I have only ever captured a 3gig partition before. Thanks.

• SQL Error: -443, SQLState: 38111 when accessing table metadata on DB2 zOS

- by snowflake
Hello, I'm getting following error when using Hibernate in a Java application over my DB2 database. This error occurs with one DB2 database and not with another (I'm almost sure the problem is in DB2 server side configuration), and I didn't found the difference between the two databases. The SQL error -443 is missing from the documentation I found: http:// rikipedia.co.za/index.php/DB2_SQL_Error_Codes (one link maximum per question due to reputation) According to following link, the 111 part of the sql state 38111 would indicate the reason of the failure. http://www.sqlerror.de/db2_sql_error_-443_sqlstate_42724.html Any idea ? • Lightning fast forum based around metadata / tags? [closed]

- by Dan W
I wonder if anything like this exists. I'd like to add a forum to my site, but instead of the usual forum/subforum/sub-subforum structure, I'd like to use a metadata/tag approach where everything exists as a single directory, and where there's a search field at the top which instantly (<0.5 sec) filters the threads to a particular keyword or keywords. Also, as the admin, I would be able to add highly visible buttons at the top, which can be clicked on for the main categories I choose for the forum (nevertheless, users can also add tags to their own threads outside of these default main tags I supply if they wish). This approach, if done properly, is more powerful, efficient, maintenance free, scalable and friendly than a standard forum, so I was hoping someone had the same idea and made something out of it. It couldn't be that hard. I'd want the speed to be up to (or near) the standard of this: http://forum.dlang.org/ Other forums (e.g.: phpBB, shudder) are orders of magnitude worse than that in terms of latency (posting or browsing), and I think that is wrong, even in principle ;)

• IDataServiceMetadataProvider - Entities dont show up in $metadata.

- by TomTom
I am trying to write our own RIA services provider to expose data from a server that I access via ODBC. I follow th eguidelines set out at http://blogs.msdn.com/alexj/archive/2010/03/02/creating-a-data-service-provider-part-9-un-typed.aspx I have written our own IDataServiceMetadataProvider / IDataServiceQueryProvider pair and get no errors on what i do. I am putting in a resource set like this: ResourceType tableType = new ResourceType( typeof(Dictionary<string, object>), ResourceTypeKind.EntityType, null, "Martini", table_name, false ); tableType.CanReflectOnInstanceType = false; var prodKey = new ResourceProperty( "Key", ResourcePropertyKind.Key | ResourcePropertyKind.Primitive, ResourceType.GetPrimitiveResourceType(typeof(int)) ); prodKey.CanReflectOnInstanceTypeProperty = false; tableType.AddProperty(prodKey); var prodName = new ResourceProperty( "Name", ResourcePropertyKind.Primitive, ResourceType.GetPrimitiveResourceType(typeof(string)) ); prodName.CanReflectOnInstanceTypeProperty = false; tableType.AddProperty(prodName); _MetaDataProvider.AddResourceType(tableType); _MetaDataProvider.AddResourceSet(new ResourceSet(table_name, tableType)); I see the requests coming in for enumerating the resource sets. I check them there in a breakpoint, and the resource set and the type is there, with all properties. Still, the output I get is: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes" ?> - <service xml:base="http://localhost:2377/MartiniData.svc/" xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" xmlns:app="http://www.w3.org/2007/app" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2007/app"> - <workspace> <atom:title>Default</atom:title> </workspace> </service> And for the $metadata version: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes" ?> - <edmx:Edmx Version="1.0" xmlns:edmx="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/06/edmx"> - <edmx:DataServices xmlns:m="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices/metadata" m:DataServiceVersion="1.0"> - <Schema Namespace="Martini" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices" xmlns:m="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices/metadata" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/05/edm"> <EntityContainer Name="Martini" m:IsDefaultEntityContainer="true" /> </Schema> </edmx:DataServices> </edmx:Edmx> The actual metadata for the types never shows up, no error is shown. pretty frustrating. Flex seems to ignore the constant FETCH_EMPLOYEES_EVENT in the metadata-tag. My question is: Is it somehow possible to use constant strings in metadata?

• Subversion: svn status displays tons of undesired .metadata files

- by FarmBoy
I'm trying to set up Subversion on Ubuntu Linux. It seems to be working, except that when I made one change and tried svn status, I found about 100 files had been changed, in the .metadata directory. My ~/.subversion/config file currently contains the following line: global-ignores = *.o *.lo *.la *.al .libs *.so *.so.[0-9]* *.a *.pyc *.pyo *.rej *~ .*.swp .DS_Store What do I need to add to ignore the .metadata files? The directory under consideration is used by Eclipse for Python development using PyDev, if that matters.

• iTunes copy just metadata (song and album ratings, playlists) from iPod

- by Jared Updike
I have an iPod touch that I synched with my Windows computer (iTunes 9.0 I think) until my harddrive failed and I lost my entire library. I rebuilt the library (songs) from a year old backup (and various other source for songs) but my playlists and ratings are of course a year old. My iPod itself has most of the playlists and ratings I care most about (favorite songs and albums, rated 4 and 5, for example). I have a catch 22 situation where I feel nervous that I haven't backed up my iPod in around 4 months (when my drive failed) so I'd like to back it up as soon as possible... but if I back it up I have to clear all the songs and playlists and copy them back, which I can't really do since I need to rebuild my playlists on my computer first (using the data only available on my iPod!) The question: is there a better way to READ the information off my iPod than doing it manually, song by song and album by album and playlist by playlist (XML, text dump, database, spreadsheet, anything). In other words, mostly I want the information (metadata like ratings and playlists, not songs) copied off the iPod so I can more quickly get my iTunes library ratings and playlists re-built (manually) so I can finally wipe the music and back up my apps, etc. Then I'd like to copy the music back immediately. The part I'd like to avoid is manually navigating everything on my iPod to read through all the playlists and ratings (50 GB, 6,000+ songs) as I re-enter all of that data by hand. I've done a few dozen albums and it's pretty time consuming having to tap around on the iPod. Reading from a spreadsheet (for example, or XML which I could write a script to get into spreadsheet form) would probably help tremendously, plus then I'd have a backup of that information somewhere besides just my iPod.
