• An important question on iPhone file writing

  I use the NSHomeDirectory() function to get the app's home folder, and write to the Documents directory within that. I'm curious, though, what happens when the user downloads an update for the app in the appstore? Will it all be deleted? When I delete the app on the device, then reinstall it, its wiped out. So, I'm curious to know what will happen with an update. I can't find this in the documentation at all. Thanks alot for reading. I really tried to find this asked somewhere else first, but couldn't. Hopefully this page will be informative to guys like me who are confused on the subject.

  see also "WCF push to client through firewall" I need to have a WCF client that connect to a WCF server, then when some of the data changes on the server the clients need to update its display. As there is likely to be a firewall between the clients and the server. All communications must be over HTTP The server can not make an (physical) outgoing call to the client. As I am writing both the client and the server I do not need to limit the solution to only using soap etc. I am looking for built in surport for "long polling" / "Comet" etc Thanks for the most informative answer from Drew Marsh on how to implement long polling in WCF. However I thought the main “selling point” of WCF was that you could do this sort of thing just by configuring the channels to be used in the config file. E.g I want a channel that logically two way but physically incoming only.

• Debugging 500 Internal Server Error on PHP running on IIS7 cluster

  Recently my ISP switched our website to an IIS7.0 high availibility cluster. The website is running on PHP5.2.1 and I can only upload files (so no registry tweaks). I had tested the website before and everything seemed to be working, but now the checkout page fails with: 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. As error messages go, this isn't very informative. I've tried: ini_set('display_errors', 1); ini_set('error_log', $file_php_can_write_to ); but both don't seem to do anything. Anyone know how to get better debugging output?

• When to use or not use symbols in PHP

  I'm reading a PHP book where the author says that symbols should be avoided except when it's valid to use them. Very informative stuff, if he could only elaborate or give code examples but he doesn't. Can someone from the experienced PHP bunch give me an example of what these symbols are, and when it makes sense to use them or not. I'm looking for a code example that I can wrap my head around since I don't quite get it in plain English. Code is more plain English to me.

• DDE Server Windows:orcascr9.exe: Application Error

  Hello I've looked at the queries on SO that pertain to similar errors - but haven't found anything so far, to help with this particular problem I am having with an orcascript which I am running under Powerbuilder9.0. The orca script connects to an SCC service provider, does a full target refresh, and then is supposed to build the exe. It never gets to the last step though. The log is not very informative and simply says this at the point of failure: PBORCA_SccRefreshTarget. Full Rebuild Calling cm_rebuild_application(CM_REBUILD_FULL) While the script is at some way into this above step, it exits and throws up the DDE server error. Can someone help me figure this one out? I just barely know the basics of PB, and the intent of this exercise is to convert an IDE-based build that I inherited, into an orcascript build so that i can run the build unmonitored.   If it wasn't you guys I would've never discovered Albahari.com's free threading ebook. My apologies if I come off as being extremely lazy but I need to make efficient use of my time and make sure am not just swallowing any garbage of the web. Therefore I am looking for the best and most informative and with a fair bit of detail for the Reflection chapter in .Net. Reflection is something that comes up time and time again and I want to extend my reading from what I know already from the official 70-536 book. I'm not a big fan of MSDN but at the moment that's al I'm using. Anyone got any other good published reading material off the inter web that can help revision for the entrance exam??? • Why does adding a reference to project targeting .NET Framework 4.0 fail?

  We have two projects that are both class libraries. Project 1 is a VS 2008 project and targets the .NET Framework 3.5. Project 2 is a VS 2010 (release candidate) project that targets the .NET Framework 4.0. When I try to add a reference to Project 2 in Project 1, it fails with a less than informative error message. I know that if I change the target Framework for Project 2 to 3.5, then adding the reference will work. My question is, if I don't change the target frameworks, but convert Project 1 to VS 2010, will the referencing work? Stated another way, is there some inherent incompatiblity between class libraries targeting different framework versions, or is it failing for me because VS 2008 doesn't know about the 4.0 framework?

  Greetings, I have just starting migrating to WLS 10.x and have noticed that the thread name [%t] for WL is quite verbose and more informative than I need for my deployment needs. Ultimately, I only care about the thread ID but WL gives me this:    [ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '0' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)' ~ Does anybody know if there is a way in log4j to write a custom filter that will allow me to override PatternLayout so I can parse the WLS Thread Name to just output the thread ID which in this case above is 0. I'd rather extend then customize as it makes upgrading libraries so much easier. Thanks :) - JsD

Here is what is currently on my list: Java Concurrency in Practice by Brian Goetz sed & awk by Dougherty & Robbins (O'Reilly) The Pragmatic Programmer by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas Head First Design Patterns Can anyone suggest anything else? Would especially like something similar to Joel. Something that is a bit edgy but informative. Pragmatic programmer has some key concepts but is a bit dry.

• Where can I find soft-multiply and divide algorithms?

  I'm working on a micro-controller without hardware multiply and divide. I need to cook up software algorithms for these basic operations that are a nice balance of compact size and efficiency. My C compiler port will employ these algos, not the the C developers themselves. My google-fu is so far turning up mostly noise on this topic. Can anyone point me to something informative? I can use add/sub and shift instructions. Table lookup based algos might also work for me, but I'm a bit worried about cramming so much into the compiler's back-end...um, so to speak. Thanks!

  I've been playing with pointers to better understand them and I came across something I think I should be able to do, but can't sort out how. The code below works fine - I can output "a", "dog", "socks", and "pants" - but what if I wanted to just output the 'o' from "socks"? • Getting meaningful error messages from fstream's in C++

  What is the best way to get meaningful file access error messages, in a portable way from std::fstreams ? The primitiveness of badbits and failbits is getting to be bit annoying. I have written my own exception hierarchies against win32 and POSIX before, and that was far more flexible than the way the STL does it. I am getting "basic::ios_clear" as an error message from the what method of a downcasted catch (std::exception) of a fstream which has exceptions enabled. This doesn't mean much to me, although I do know what the problem is I'd like my program to be a tad more informative so that when I start deployment a few months later my life will be easier. Is there anything in Boost to extract meaningful messages out of the ofstream's implementation cross platform and cross STL implementation ?

• PHP - white screen of death!

  Hi everyone, After debugging a codeigniter app that were installed into a new development environment, I have started to freak out when seeing white screens with nothing more available. I have been able to solve each and every one of the errors that have caused this, but it have taken seriously way too long time. PHP error_reporting(E_ALL) & display_errors", 1 is set as well. I even installed Xdebug in hope of getting more output, but no. My logging settings are also working, but nothing is written to the log. Is there a way to get something informative printed out instead of a complete white screen? It would certainly shorten my time spent on solving the eventual errors that causes this? Thanks a lot!   I've used TFS for about 18 months now and I'm really not excited about it. It seems like the worst of the current versions of SCMs on the market. I think this thread will help people decide if TFS is for them vs. other source control systems. While TFS does a lot more than that, I think that source control is so critical to software development that any system (or combination thereof) that you pick needs to consider source control first. So, feel free to sound off. Maybe it'll make us feel better and be informative at the same time.

  Sheesh talk about limited information! I'm trying to get my Android application to connect to an online database to access information. There's quite a bit of info including geotags and these are going to be mapped on my app. The developer site has the very informative piece of information: You can use the network (when it's available) to store and retrieve data on your own web-based services. To do network operations, use classes in the following packages: java.net.* android.net.* Like I said in my previous question, I'm still very much an android newbie, and trying to remember my java oop from college is slow. Does anyone have an example of how this might work, or how I could implement it? I wouldn't mind even connecting to a local xml file, if I could find a good example of how to do that!?   I recently asked a question on using volatile and was directed to read some very informative articles from Intel and others discussing memory barriers and their uses. After reading these articles I have become quite paranoid though. I have a 64-bit machine. Is it safe to memcpy into adjacent, non-overlapping regions of memory from multiple threads? For example, say I have a buffer: char buff[10]; Is it always safe for one thread to memcpy into the first 5 bytes while a second thread copies into the last 5 bytes? My gut reaction (and some simple tests) indicate that this is completely safe, but I have been unable to find documentation anywhere that can completely convince me.

  I am new to SSL programming and finding some difficulties in understanding SSL concepts. I tried to get it through openssl site,but it is not much informative. Here is my doubts. What is difference between SSL Buffer and BIO buffer..? I mean layerwise detail will be very helpful. Can I use SSL_Write and SSL_Read without setting any BIO object to SSL object..? What exactly BIO_flush will do... I mean is it going to flush all the data to network buffer from BIO buffer.. ? If it is possible to do write and read data from SSL directly without using any BIO object then is it possible to flush the data from SSL buffer to network buffer by any means.. ? It would be very helpful if any body explain these things or giving any links where I can find answers to my questions.

• How Do Sockets Work in C?

  I am a bit confused about socket programming in C. You create a socket, bind it to an interface and an IP address and get it to listen. I found a couple of web resources on that, and understood it fine. In particular, I found an article Network programming under Unix systems to be very informative. What confuses me is the timing of data arriving on the socket. How can you tell when packets arrive, and how big the packet is, do you have to do all the heavy lifting yourself? My basic assumption here is that packets can be of variable length, so once binary data starts appearing down the socket, how do you begin to construct packets from that?

  Hello, I found the discussion on Do you test private method informative. I have decided, that in some classes, I want to have protected methods, but test them. Some of these methods are static and short. Because most of the public methods make use of them, I will probably be able to safely remove the tests later. But for starting with a TDD approach and avoid debugging, I really want to test them. I thought of the following: Method Object as adviced in an answer seems to be overkill for this. Start with public methods and when code coverage is given by higher level tests, turn them protected and remove the tests. Inherit a class with a testable interface making protected methods public Which is best practice? Is there anything else? It seems, that JUnit automatically changes protected methods to be public, but I did not have a deeper look at it. PHP does not allow this via reflection.

• Control Debug Level in C++ Library - Linux

  Hi all, I have a C++ library, which is used in both Linux and Windows. I want to enable the user to control the debug level (0 - no debug, 1 - only critical errors ... 5 - informative debug information). The debug log is printed to a text file. In Windows, I can do it using a registry value (DWORD DebugLevel). What can be a good replacement which works also for Linux? (Without 3rd party tools, for example Linux "registry"). • VS 2010 JavaScript editor – matching braces highlighting – is it so difficult to implement?

  I do not know. Just curious. But first things first. As a web developer I spend about 80% of my work-time editing JavaScript code. And since my server-side platform is .NET then it would be very convenient to have decent JavaScript text editor within Visual Studio IDE. So, Visual Studio 2010 is out. Downloaded and installed. What were my expectations regarding JavaScript editor? Pretty low, actually.  I just wanted to have matching braces highlighted eventually. That’s all. Yes, I know about Ctrl + ] shortcut but it is not event remotely close to convenience. And the result? Alas. Without further ado, just look at some real-world fragment of code from jQuery Templates Proposal experimental plugin as I see it in Notepad++, Notepad2 and Visual Studio 2010 editors respectively: Notepad++ Notepad2 Visual Studio 2010 Look at the highlighted parentheses, regular expression literals, numbers. Do you have a feeling that the last screenshot is not very informative in comparison with the other ones? If yes, then my question is why? Instead I was given an IntelliSense. Sorry, but I do not need it to rot my mind. Especially the one which does not always work properly (try to use it with base2 library for example). With all the expressive power of the language I have to know what I am doing. Instead I still have the same plain old Notepad with some of the JavaScript keywords colorized, plus partially functional/useful IntelliSense. What I do need, is just a little help to make less errors when I type the code – some essential text editor facilities that I really need. Give me that and only then feel free to improve on something else. Maybe I am wrong. Then, sorry. Just cannot believe that I have to wait for another couple of years to get very basic code editor feature.
