  Please redirect if this is not (and probably thats true) the correct forum/site. I have a dell server and I am trying to configure it for the first time. It is running windows server 2003. I do not have a monitor screen. Can I use laptop screen to display dell server and set it up? I mean to say is, if I can display dell server on laptop screen, it would be great. I am trying that with a dell laptop but not getting the display. Any help/pointer would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Toshiba Satellite laptop connected to HDTV

  I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6014 laptop running Windows 7 64-bit connected to a Toshiba Regza 42" HDTV with an HDMI cable. The laptop has a 16" display and the screen resolution is set to the maximum/recommended of 1366x768. The display output is set to "LCD+HDMI". The display looks fine on the laptop screen but on the TV it is not a "full screen" display, it leaves a good 3" black border all around all 4 edges. When I switch the display to "HDMI only", it is now too big for the TV screen and some of my desktop icons are no longer visible off to the side. What is the best way to set this up? I guess that since a 16" and 42" displays have different native resolutions, a LCD+HDMI mode is defaulting to the optimal size for the 16". But when I set it to HDMI Only, what is the appropriate resolution for a 42" full screen display? Thanks

• Very poor battery life on Lenovo ThinkPad W500 laptop

  I have a new ThinkPad W500 laptop (w/ 9 cell battery) running Windows 7 RTM 64-bit. All drivers* and BIOS are the latest. Battery life appeared poor so I performed several tests under the following conditions: Battery starts with 100% charge Screen on minimum brightness Screen saver running Wifi n enabled and active "Normal" set of programs running including Outlook 2007, FeedDemon, TweetDeck and antivirus Laptop left untouched during tests Under the above conditions, I clocked under 2 hours of battery life across 3 tests (1:49, 1:52, 1:47). If I actually use the computer, we're looking at 1:30. Something is not right... The smoking gun here is that Lenovo hasn't officially released Windows 7 drivers for this laptop. I haven't tried with Vista or XP yet. What are others seeing? Update: For W500 owners w/ the 9 cell battery, what value do you see for "Full charge capacity" when on the Battery tab of the Power Manager utility? I see 81.87 Wh.

• Laptop HDD failure imminent?

  I have an HP Compaq 615 laptop with an 160 GB 7200 rpm HDD. Hasn't been dropped or shaken, in fact it almost always stayed on my desk. I've treated it as nice as I could. The other day, however, my OS froze and I could hear a repeated clink-clink-clink coming from the HDD zone of the laptop. I had to switch off hardware-ly the laptop and re-start it. It worked very well after, including now. However I backed up immediately the core data on my USB drive and ordered an external USB HDD for periodic backups. Will it die soon or it was just a "blip"?

• Fullscreen Video stutters on second monitor laptop

  Fullscreen video on my new 1080p monitor is choppy when it comes from my laptop. The same video plays when not full screen. This goes for all video(Flash/MKV, etc), regardless of video resolution. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series card in my Thinkpad Edge, Turion X2 2GHz. The computer plays 1080p fine. Things I've tried: Updating Drivers Switching cables Turning Hardware Acceleration Changing video players process priority Rebooting Turning of laptop screen Turning off unused processes Nothing Works. What is the likelyhood that my laptop cannot power a 1920x1280 display?

• Windows 7 - Runs in safe mode, crashes in "normal" mode

  A couple of days ago I came back from a meeting to find my laptop had locked up. Power lights still on but the screen was blank (by which I mean black, though still "backlit" so not dead). Didn't respond to anything. I rebooted and it powered up fine and I got to the login screen. I logged in and it seemed to be going fine for about 30 seconds (gmail notifier and pidgin popped up) then the same thing happened - black screen. If I boot into Safe Mode it's all fine, no problems. I've tried removing everything from the startup folders (All users and my login), everything from the Run section of the registry (Local Machine and my login) and I've disabled every service which doesn't run in Safe Mode (assuming anything running in safe mode is OK) but the problem still exists. I've scanned the memory for errors (all fine). Any thoughts on what else I could try?

  I have the following hardware: 2 Desktop PCs, running Windows XP and Ubuntu Macbook Pro a LCD monitor, a wired keyboard, and a wired mouse Currently, I'm using an oldish IOGear KVM switch to connect the two PCs to the input/output (and it works very well). I'd like a setup that includes the laptop as well, ideally maintaining as much portability as possible (meaning I'd like to be able to sit down, easily plug in my laptop, work on all computers, then easily pick up and leave with the laptop - is docking station the right word here?). What hardware do I need to do this?

• HP dv9000 Vista laptop won't boot from CD/DVD drive

  My HP dv9000 Vista laptop recently got the BSOD with error 0x0000c1f5. The only way to fix this error is to be able to boot from CD/DVD and use some repair software I have. The problem is that the laptop REFUSES to boot from any CD/DVD I try. I've changed the boot order so the CD/DVD is first, and I can hear the drive spin up a bit upon power-up, but after a second, it spins down and then the laptop tries to boot from hard drive. Any ideas? (I've tried lots of CDs so it's not the media itself) Thanks much!

  Hi, I have 1 VGA socket on my laptop, and currently have that in use by a large screen. At some point in the future I would like to get another one of these screens and use both screens in dual screen mode but not use my laptop display (to be honest my laptop display is pretty rubbish as its like 2/3s the size of my screen - even if I had the choice to use all 3 I probably wouldn't want to).   I have a nokia N97. In my apartment there's a wifi network that we all use to connect to the internet. But for the past few days my laptop is not able to find the network..Initially I thought it was a problem of the network,but hen I found out that others were able to use it..My vista os laptop is able to detect other available networks but not the required one..Then i tried to connect my cell phone to the network and it did easily!! I tried restoring the network settings to default but it showed the network for just 2 mins and it ws back to square one.. I wanted to know can I connect my laptop to the cell using USB and browse internet through that?? I have done it when I used GPRS but am not sure if it cn be done in this situation when the cell is connected toa wifi network..plz help..

• Converting a Full HD Inspiron 9400 laptop LCD to a standalone monitor

  Has anyone tried converting a LCD laptop monitor (17" full HD in this instance) to a stand-alone monitor? Are there any converters that one can buy to send DVI or VGA signals to the plug that is used to connect said LCD to the laptop motherboard? My laptop is the infamous Dell Inspiron 9400 (1705) model. They can have awesome monitors but if you check out ebay, there are many there for sale for little to nothing since the graphic cards fault unsually often in those machines. I'd like to be able to use the LCD and just scrap the rest.

• Laptop not charging when connected to mains outlet

  I've had this laptop for a few weeks now, it's a Sony Vaio. I went to charge it a few days ago and plugged in the power cable, but it's not charging. The battery icon in the Windows taskbar to the bottom right says it's plugged in and charging, but the charge level never goes above 2%. I have checked and I don't have a hcarging switch on the laptop anywhere, so it should be charging. If I unplug the cable, the laptop runs out of power within 30 seconds or so, further fueling my thought that it's a faulty battery. Anyone have any bright ideas? If this doesn't get fixed I'll just ring up Sony and get them to send me a replacement battery or something. Thanks.

I want to specify OS/RAM/HDD size/CD drive/screen resolution/battery life. I have found several sites so far where I can specify everything except battery life. Does such a site exist? I know that this is not a shopping site - but before any moderator rushes to close this question - please note that I am not asking "where do I buy this laptop" - merely what laptop fits this specs. • Cannot login to XP SP3 in VMWarePlayer virtual machine in safe mode

Now the guest OS boots up in Safe Mode but I cannot login with my user id/password. • Disable CD eject button on Windows laptop

  Most laptops have a CD eject that is very sensitive, and placed such that it regularly gets triggered when handling the laptop. This is in particular a problem (for clumsy-handed me) when picking up the laptop to stow in in a laptop bag; I've lost count of the number of times it has ejected just as I am lowering it into the case! I rarely use a CD, but I am wondering whether some crafty software hack (or other trick) might be possible to make it less vulnerable. Perhaps trying to fool it into thinking it is busy (but ideally without destroying my battery). Otherwise, I might as well bow to the inevitable and snap the darned thing off. I'm not making this brand-specific, as I've seen this problem on a range of both branded and re-badged laptops. I am, however, mainly interested in windows-friendly solutions.

• Laptop touchpad works incorrect when on power supply

  My original laptop adapter broke down, so I've baught a new one. It's a no-brand adapter from a dutch internet shop. The power of the new adapter is slightly more than the old adapter, but in my opinion that shouldn't be a problem. The laptop is a Toshiba Sattelite L40-15B. When the old adapter broke down due to short circuit, this laptop was connected. When the adapter is unplugged, the touchpad works correctly and smoothly. But as soon as it is connected, the cursor moves jumpy, and response badly. Does anyone know where this problem comes from, and if there's a solution?

• Brightness too dark or too bright

  Basically, below a seemingly-arbitrary threshold (seems to be around 60%) my laptop screen is too dark to really make out much, and above that threshold it takes its maximum brightness (which is waay too bright for my eyes). This problem only occurs when I change the brightness using Windows' UI. Changing the brightness using Fn keys on my keyboard works as expected; unless the screen went into dark mode because of Windows, in which case they have no effect. This problem started occuring on my ASUS laptop very recently. My laptop has a poor battery, but I don't think that's related. What is going on? I tried resetting power plan settings, turning off adaptive brightness and restarting. I'll give any info asked for. Help required urgently...

• 2 accounts in safe mode ?

  When I start my laptop in safe mode, I have 2 accounts displayed, i.e. Administrator and one as R122, but when I start it in normal mode, only the R122 account is being displayed and not the Administrator one. My R122 account is password protected, so once I had a problem in installation and had to go to safe mode for some reason, I was shocked to see 2 accounts. I had once formatted my laptop with a friend of mine. Why are there 2 accounts in safe mode and only 1 in normal mode ?

• Laptop goes black after a minute or so

  I have a laptop that is behaving strangely. When I turn it on, it does everything what it is supposed to do, but after a minute or so I hear a Click and all goes black. It's like it turns off the power. It doesn't matter what the laptop is doing. It also happens when it's just waiting in the Bios setup menu. Has someone experienced this before? Can it be the power supply? Can it be a cooling problem? Any ideas? By the way, it's a Compaq Presario Laptop, maybe 3 years old already.

• Compaq Presario Laptop Monitor Problems

  I am attaching a few pics of my laptop monitor now . Can you please tell me if this is a hardware error which can be rectified by replacing the monitor ? How this happened - I accidently hit my leg on the laptop and jammed it against the wall and ever since the monitor is like this .I plan to replace the Monitor by buying a spare parts laptop that sells in ebay . I wonder if this is a LCD HARDWARE problem or problem with the cable that goes to the monitor .   Just bought an HP 4530s from newegg. Laptop is great, but.. The FAN is always on. I did some googling, found it is a known problem, but no easily googlable solution. Tried to: Update BIOS to the latest Disable "CPU fan always on when plugged in" BIOS setting Installed Windows 7 Home (came with), Live CDed Ubuntu, Windows XP Spent 2 hours with horrible HP support Some other things that I can't already recall = spent too much time on it Laptop is not refundable (learned it the hard way, after the fact, by looking at the NEWEGG clever policy that is hidden in "details") I would really appreciate a workable solution / workaround / hack. The laptop is for my friend who will most likely be running Windows XP/7.

• Laptop Toshiba Satelite M300 screen is completely blank.

  Hi, My laptop Toshiba satelite M300 Laptop screen is completely blacked out. It powers up and appears to be running but the screen is blank. I've taken battery pack off and back on again. Before the screen was blacked out, it used to flicker a bit. Also before it blacked out i was having problems with the internet and I was on phone to Internet provider who took me through steps to take my laptop back to a future date where it was operational. It then worked properly for a few days but then switched it on and screen was blank. It's more then a year old so out of warranty. Any suggestions on whether I should pay the $300 bucks to see if they can fix it?
