• SQLBits breaking records

- by simonsabin
Our next SQLBits event in Telford in July has topped the number of registrations for the Friday and we are still over 2 months to go. This is going to be our biggest regional SQLBits ever by a long way both in terms of attendees and sessions. I’m currently in the planning for the Friday evening party and it will be a special event. If you care about data and work with SQL Server the SQLBits XII is an event that you do not want to miss. Its not too late to register but I’ve been told...(read more)

• SOLVED: Breaking parent web.config dependencies in sub applications

This article explains how to implement a sub application such as a blog in your website without experiencing dependency issues. A common problem that developers experience is when their sub applications accidentally inherit requirements of the parent website. This is actually by design but read on if this is causing problems in your site. Scenario This problem has caught me out a couple of times so far but usually with enough of a gap between occurrences that it had become just a fuzzy memory....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

• Log Shipping breaking daily on SQL Server 2005

- by IT2
I am facing a somewhat serious problem with Log Shipping on SQL Server 2005 and I am having trouble to correct it, so I will try some help from SF's experts. I have a Windows 2003 Server (PROD) that ships transactional log backups to another two servers: STAND1: Windows 2003 Server with SQL Server 2005. STAND2: Windows 2008 R2 Server with SQL Server 2005. The problem is that Log Shipping to STAND2 is breaking for ~ 90 minutes some times of the day and returning back without intervention. The breaking occur at times when the backup file is larger (after reindexing, etc). I can see the message below logged on the COPY job: *** Error: The specified network name is no longer available The copy agent was breaking dozens times a day only to STAND2 server, and after the changes below "only" breaks ~ two times a day: The frequency of the backup job was changed from 5 minutes to 10 minutes. Instead of backing up the 4 databases to the same folder, the log backups are now saved on separated folders for each database. The backup job doesn't run 24hs now, and only for 14 hours a day, when people are working on the database. I configured the SQL Server instances on the three servers to limit the memory, leaving more memory to the OS. Now I don't know what to do. Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks!

• Convert user title (text) to URL, what instead spaces, #, & and other characters?

- by Thomas
I have some form on the website where users can add new pages. I must generate SEO friendly URLs and make this urls unique. What characters can I display in url, I know that spaces I should convert to undescore: " "-"_" and before it - underscores to something else, for example: ""-"()" It is easy make title from url back. But what in my specific title can be all characters from keyboard, even : @#%:"{/\';. Are some contraindications to don't use this characters in URL? Important for me is: -easy generate url and title from url back (without queries to database) -each title are unique, so url must be too -SEO friendly URLs

• Modifying a const through a non-const pointer

- by jasonline
I'm a bit confused what happened in the following code: const int e = 2; int* w = ( int* ) &e; // (1) cast to remove const-ness *w = 5; // (2) cout << *w << endl; // (3) outputs 5 cout << e << endl; // (4) outputs 2 cout << "w = " << w << endl; // (5) w points to the address of e cout << "&e = " << &e << endl; In (1), w points to the address of e. In (2), that value was changed to 5. However, when the values of *w and e were displayed, their values are different. But if you print value of w pointer and &e, they have the same value/address. How come e still contained 2, even if it was changed to 5? Were they stored in a separate location? Or a temporary? But how come the value pointed by w is still the address of e?

• Performing non-blocking requests? - Django

- by RadiantHex
Hi folks, I have been playing with other frameworks, such as NodeJS, lately. I love the possibility to return a response, and still being able to do further operations. e.g. def view(request): do_something() return HttpResponse() do_more_stuff() #not possible!!! Maybe Django already offers a way to perform operations after returning a request, if that is the case that would be great. Help would be very much appreciated! =D

• Count white spaces to the left of a line in a text file using C++

- by insertable
Hi all, I am just trying to count the number of white spaces to the LEFT of a line from a text file. I have been using count( line.begin(), line.end(), ' ' ); but obviously that includes ALL white spaces to the left, in between words and to the right. So basically what I'm wanting it to do is once it hits a non-space character stop it from counting the white spaces. Thanks everyone.

• Non-english domain naming issues in programming

- by Svend
Most programming code, I imagine is written in english. But I'm curious how people handling the issue of naming herein. Alot of programming is done within some bussiness domain, usually with well established terms for certain procedures, items. I'm from Denmark for instance, and something I work alot with has a term called "indblikskode", which sorta translates to "insight code". So, do I use the line "string indblikskode = ..." in the C# code for some webservice related to this? Or do I try to use a translation, such as "insightcode"? The bussiness I'm in isn't even consistent in it's language, for instance using the term "organisatorisk enhed" (organizatorical unit), but just as often using the abbreviation "OU", which is obviously abbreviated from the english. How do other people handle this naming issue, while keeping consistent, and sane (in everything from simple variable names in your code, to database tables, to server names)? Duplicates: Should identifiers and comments be always in English or in the native language of the application and developers? Do you use another language instead of english ?

• include a .tex file with spaces in the filename

- by NomeN
I am including chapters in my latex file one by one by using the \include{} statement, up till now I've had no problem with that. But I've recently written a chapter which I've saved under a name including spaces...because you can. Now the include{} statement apparently doesn't like spaces, and prints just the filename in my document in stead of the chapter. It is probably a pretty easy fix (apart from removing the spaces in the filename, ;-) ), but I can't find it.

• Convert integer to equivalent number of blank spaces.

- by mike
I was wondering what the easiest way is to convert an integer to the equivalent number of blank spaces. I need it for the spaces between nodes when printing a binary search tree. I tried this `int position = printNode.getPosition(); String formatter = "%1"+position+"s%2$s
"; System.out.format(formatter, "", node.element);` But I am getting almost 3 times as many spaces compared to the int value of position. I'm not really sure if I am formatting the string right either. Any suggestions would be great! If it makes it clearer, say position = 6; I want 6 blank spaces printed before my node element.

• Unicode generated by toEscapedUnicode method is without spaces

- by vishvesha
For this word ????????????? the Unicode is== सुखचैनानी रीझुमल जिवतराम and look it has spaces before र and ज But when I am trying in my code String tempString=Strings.toEscapedUnicode(strString); This method to convert to Unicode gives a result without spaces: सुखचैनानीरीझुमलजिवतराम and that's why they are not matching. My 'toEscapeUnicode' method generates Unicode without spaces. I want the spaces, so how to do it?

• What technical reasons exist for not using space characters in file names?

- by Chris W. Rea
Somebody I know expressed irritation today regarding those of us who tend not to use spaces in our filenames, e.g. NamingThingsLikeThis.txt -- despite most modern operating systems supporting spaces in filenames. Are there technical reasons that it's still common to see file names without (appropriate) spaces? If so, what are these technical reasons that spaces in filenames are avoided or discouraged, and in what circumstances are they relevant? The most obvious reason I could think of, and why I typically avoid it, are the extra quotes required on the command line when dealing with such files. Are there any other significant technical reasons?

• How do I get my code to read the spaces between longs?

- by WahtsUpWorld
I apologize for any inconvenience that may occur in answering my question, I'm fairly new to programming and I'm so far only in the last weeks of my community college Java I class. The problem I am facing is in my code of which I cannot seem to get the PrintWriter to address the spaces in between my longs' phone number and social security I.D. The entire code consists of two classes in which one pulls from the other the information needed to parse and present the file writer/print writer. Here is the entire code w/ the second class after it: public class FinalProjectGroup1 { public static void main(String[] args) { } public String name; public long ssid; public double pay; public String address; • concatenate files including path in header - path contains spaces

- by manolo
I have to concatenate a number of files in a directory structure which contains spaces in the folder names looking like this: ./CH 0000100014/A10/11XT/11xt#001.csv find . -name "*.csv" -type f -print0 | xargs -0 cat > allmycsv.txt does the job, however now I need to include the information contained in the path, i.e. CH 0000100014/A10/11XT as a header of each inputfile to cat. find . -name "*.csv" -type f -print0 | xargs -0 -I % sh -c 'echo %; cat %' >allmycsv.txt would do the job, if I had no spaces in the path, but in my case, cat does not get along with the space in the path name. Is there a way out? Cheers, E P.S. I am working on bash on OSX

• How to pass an argument to a Windows Scheduled Task with spaces in it

- by Rodney
I need to set up a Windows Scheduled Task. It accepts 1 parameter/argument which is a path and can contain spaces. My Scheduled task does not work - it "breaks" the parameter up at the first space. If I run it in the Command Prompt I can just wrap the argument in " " and it works fine, however, this does not work in the Scheduled Task UI. e.g. C:\Program Files\xyz\FTP File Transfer\FTPFileTransferTask.exe "C:\Program Files\xyz\The Interface\Folder Path" I have tried wrapping the argument with " " ' ' [ ] () and have tried filling in the spaces with %20, ~1 etc. with no luck. I know of one solution to make a bat file and use " " around my argument but I don't want to add more complexity. I tried it on Windows 7 and Windows 2008 Server and both failed. There seems to be no discussions on this?

• How to include a non-breaking hyphen in hyperlink text in Word 2010

- by dunxd
I want to include a URL in word document, both as text people can read, and a link they can click. The URL has a hyphen in it. I don't want the URL to get broken across lines. When I use a regular hyphen, the link works, but the text displayed gets broken. When I use a non-breaking hyphen (Ctrl+Shift+-) Word removes the hyphen from the link. When I try and manually edit the hyperlink, I can't add a non-breaking hyphen into the Text to display field using Ctrl+Shift+-. If I was writing this is HTML I could just do: www.my‑link.com How do I get Word to do the equivalent?

• Functional programming constructs in non-functional programming languages

- by Giorgio
This question has been going through my mind quite a lot lately and since I haven't found a convincing answer to it I would like to know if other users of this site have thought about it as well. In the recent years, even though OOP is still the most popular programming paradigm, functional programming is getting a lot of attention. I have only used OOP languages for my work (C++ and Java) but I am trying to learn some FP in my free time because I find it very interesting. So, I started learning Haskell three years ago and Scala last summer. I plan to learn some SML and Caml as well, and to brush up my (little) knowledge of Scheme. Well, a lot of plans (too ambitious?) but I hope I will find the time to learn at least the basics of FP during the next few years. What is important for me is how functional programming works and how / whether I can use it for some real projects. I have already developed small tools in Haskell. In spite of my strong interest for FP, I find it difficult to understand why functional programming constructs are being added to languages like C#, Java, C++, and so on. As a developer interested in FP, I find it more natural to use, say, Scala or Haskell, instead of waiting for the next FP feature to be added to my favourite non-FP language. In other words, why would I want to have only some FP in my originally non-FP language instead of looking for a language that has a better support for FP? For example, why should I be interested to have lambdas in Java if I can switch to Scala where I have much more FP concepts and access all the Java libraries anyway? Similarly: why do some FP in C# instead of using F# (to my knowledge, C# and F# can work together)? Java was designed to be OO. Fine. I can do OOP in Java (and I would like to keep using Java in that way). Scala was designed to support OOP + FP. Fine: I can use a mix of OOP and FP in Scala. Haskell was designed for FP: I can do FP in Haskell. If I need to tune the performance of a particular module, I can interface Haskell with some external routines in C. But why would I want to do OOP with just some basic FP in Java? So, my main point is: why are non-functional programming languages being extended with some functional concept? Shouldn't it be more comfortable (interesting, exciting, productive) to program in a language that has been designed from the very beginning to be functional or multi-paradigm? Don't different programming paradigms integrate better in a language that was designed for it than in a language in which one paradigm was only added later? The first explanation I could think of is that, since FP is a new concept (it isn't new at all, but it is new for many developers), it needs to be introduced gradually. However, I remember my switch from imperative to OOP: when I started to program in C++ (coming from Pascal and C) I really had to rethink the way in which I was coding, and to do it pretty fast. It was not gradual. So, this does not seem to be a good explanation to me. Also, I asked myself if my impression is just plainly wrong due to lack of knowledge. E.g., do C# and C++11 support FP as extensively as, say, Scala or Caml do? In this case, my question would be simply non-existent. Or can it be that many non-FP programmers are not really interested in using functional programming, but they find it practically convenient to adopt certain FP-idioms in their non-FP language? IMPORTANT NOTE Just in case (because I have seen several language wars on this site): I mentioned the languages I know better, this question is in no way meant to start comparisons between different programming languages to decide which is better / worse. Also, I am not interested in a comparison of OOP versus FP (pros and cons). The point I am interested in is to understand why FP is being introduced one bit at a time into existing languages that were not designed for it even though there exist languages that were / are specifically designed to support FP.

We have seen some increase in activity with more people downloading our driver and either reporting their successes or reporting any issues they run into – for the native driver (sqlsrv_xxxx API) to the PDO driver (PDO API). We’d like to thank you all for your effort and hope that our responses were quick enough as well as accurate. To keep things simple, let us call the former the SQLSRV-PHP extension (php_sqlsrv.dll) whereas the latter will be the SQLSRV-PDO extension (php_pdo_sqlsrv...(read more)
