    Hello How can I measure programicaly (not query the OS, but measure) the size and order of associativity of L1 and L2 caches (data caches)? Assumtions about system: It has L1 and L2 cache (may be L3 too, may be cache sharing), It may have a hardware prefetch unit (just like P4+), it has a stable clocksource (tickcounter or good HPET for gettimeofday). There are no assumtions about OS (it can be Linux, Windows, smth non-standart), and we can't use posix queries. Language is C. And Compiler optimizations may be disabled.

  • 8GB Compact Flash Corrupted, Boot Sector Lost ?

    I have an 8GB Kingston compact Flash, and when I insert it into my mac it says that card is unredable and ask me for initialization. If i open Utilty Disk it show a card of 2,2 TB Generic Comact Flash, if I try to initialize that it give me error: POSIX reports: impossible to allocate memory. How i can format that ? There's a way with fdisk or smt to get this card work ? Thanks

It is not just rkhunter, i am not able to install anything.     I know the answer depends on the particular JVM, but I would like to understand how it is usually implemented? Is it in terms of popen (posix)? In terms of efficiency do I need to keep something in mind (other than using a Buffered stream as suggested by the javadoc). I would be interested to know if there is a general reference about implementations of JVMs which answers such questions.

    I know that on MacOSX / PosiX systems, there is atomic-compare-and-swap for C/C++ code via g++. However, I don't need the compare -- I just want to atomically swap two values. Is there an atomic swap operation available? [Everythign I can find is atomic_compare_and_swap ... and I just want to do the swap, without comparing]. Thanks!

    Just something I'd like to play with, I would like to create a "virtual" file/directory in the File System of Linux or Mac OS X (Not sure if I can share the same code - does POSIX help?), for example /foo and then perform custom code when something is read or written to it. Similar how /dev/null allows for stuff like echo "Hello!" > /dev/null I don't care if it's in /dev, /proc or anywhere else, as said it's mainly something to play with...

  • Active Directory, Linux, and User Private Groups

    We're in the process of moving from NIS on our Linux systems to binding everything to Active Directory. The NIS environment follows the common standard used by many Linux distributions that a user's primary group is a group of the same name as the user (and of which the user is typically the only member). I have been informed that in the Active Directory environment, you may not have a group name with the same name as a user (specifically, that no two AD security objects may have the same name). This would seem to complicate the process of moving our group definitions into AD. It looks like we could maintain the NIS group information in AD using only POSIX attributes (e.g., not an actual AD security object), but that seems like a suboptimal fix (because we do really want to have the same view of group membership in both the Unix and AD worlds). Have you moved a large legacy NIS environment into Active Directory? How did you handle this situation?

I'm not really a perl user beyond enjoying it for massive directory-recursive find/replace operations within text files, so I haven't much of an idea what the permissions here are supposed to look like, and I'm not really sure how to go about determining how macports has gone and installed perl this way when it's otherwise worked without failure for years now. Does anyone have any recommendations for the sanest path towards rectifying this issue? Also, is there any interesting reason as to why the macports default for the perl5 port installs 5.12.4, and not 5.16.0, which has to be explicitly installed via the perl5.16 port? Thanks again!

    Hi! I need to build a fault tolerant, highly available key/value storage (no posix, only same functionaluty as S3) using cheap existing hardware. The storage should be able to handle several billions of items. The maximum size of items is around 1GB, most are only several KB. What's the best software/ filesystem for this task? I already had a brief look at mogilefs, mongodb (grid-fs) & glusterfs but I'm not really sure which is stable & fault tolerant enough. The simpler the setup and later expansion the better :). Corin

  • Debian Squeeze locale settings

    I have a problem with a slightly customised Debian image that I'm trying to do some headless work on. The problem is that the installed locales list has been reduced to this: C en_GB en_GB.iso88591 en_GB.iso885915 en_GB.utf8 POSIX However, when I log in as root (with an otherwise as-vanilla profile), I find this: ~# set | grep LC_ LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 That's the only LC_ environment variable set, and presumably that means that it's being explicitly set somewhere (and given that /etc/default/locale only contains LANG=en_GB, I can't see any other alternative). However, I can't see where it is being set, and the fact that it's wrong is preventing, for example, postgresql-8.4 from installing. I know I can do an LC_CTYPE=en_GB apt-get install postgresql-8.4 to work around this, but I'd really like to understand where this setting comes from, and I really dislike the idea of installing an otherwise-unnecessary locale to make this go away. So: where does this LC_CTYPE setting come from, and how do I make it go away?

    Description of the problem Regularly, cron php processes crash on our production server, which result in mails with the following body : PHP Fatal error: PHP Startup: apc_mmap: mmap failed: in Unknown on line 0 Segmentation fault (core dumped) I think the Segmentation fault (core dumped) should result in core files being handled by apport and then written in /var/crashes, but the files I can see there are there since yesterday, although the last crash occured today : -rw-r----- 1 root whoopsie 1138528 mai 22 04:09 _usr_bin_php5.0.crash -rw-r----- 1 frontoffice whoopsie 1166373 mai 20 18:00 _usr_bin_php5.1005.crash -rw-r----- 1 frontoffice whoopsie 81622658 mai 22 00:05 _usr_sbin_php5-fpm.1005.crash I tried to download the last one anyway, and ran gdb /usr/sbin/php5-fpm /tmp/_usr_sbin_php5-fpm.1005.crash, only to be told that the file is not a core file (its format was not recognized). Here is the server's apc configuration : cat /etc/php5/cli/conf.d/20-apc.ini extension=apc.so apc.shm_size=512M apc.ttl=3600 apc.user_ttl=3600 apc.enable_cli=1 I'm mostly worried about the apc.shm_size… isn't it too high or too low ? I understand it has to do with the size of memory segments. Question(s) What could be the problem ? How can I troubleshoot it (how can I get a valid core file ?) ?   • MySQLi Extension with phpMyAdmin

    I just unpacked the latest phpMyAdmin into /var/www/html/phpMyAdmin and it is giving me "The mysqli extension is missing." - how do I install this? I'm on Centos. I checked php.ini and it seems to be "unlocked". when I type in php -i |grep -i mysqli ... it looks to be enabled.   • OS X Snow Leopard, change file permissions on copy

    I work with OS X, Snow Leopard and need to allow users to make copies of files (templates) located in a read-only repository for subsequent editing. The repository is located on a separate physical drive mounted to the OS X boot volume. As this is a shared computer in a school environment, all users access the machine via a single login ("user_local"). Whether using POSIX permissions or ACLs, the use case requires the file permissions to change from "read" to "read write" as they get copied to the "user_local" home directory. Googling around has not yielded anything that would indicate that this is possible via the Snow Leopard permission system. Question 1: Is this in fact possible via the permission system? If so, how? Question 2: If not possible, how would one go about solving this problem? I imagine this to be a fairly common use case so there must be a workable solution for it out there. Thanks.

    I've got 389 Directory Server running on RHEL 5 with groups, users, posix etc. RHEL clients are authenticating users with LDAP - no problems, everything works perfect, but passwords are sent in plaintext and are visible with network sniffer. So, decided to run with SSL: Created CA - got both private and public CA certificates Using CA certs: generated both of private and public certificates and combined (1st file) for 389DS according to 389DS certificate request, imported with CA public cert to 389DS from graphical console (2nd file). Enabled SSL in 389DS On the client, using authconfig-gtk enabled SSL for LDAP, specified only CA public certificate Doesn't work. Howto? What is the best way to integrate safely?

  • How Will Mac OS X Snow Leopard Upgrade Work?

    I am relatively new to Mac OS X. I got my MacBook in January, and I have never experienced a new version of the operating system. I am wondering if I should simply upgrade my install to Snow Leopard. I come from Windows where it is advised to do a complete reformat. I would rather not do this, however, and I have a feeling that due to Mac OS X' POSIX based nature, it might actually not be all that bad if I upgrade. I guess if things end up screwing up I can simply go ahead and reformat, but I am wondering what it is like to upgrade systems running Mac OS X. I wouldn't want my Snow Leopard installation to be somehow deficient due to certain inconsistencies within the system.

  • Has anyone evaluated NuttX RTOS?

    While reading Linux User's Journal today, I stumbled across a little blurb about NuttX RTOS. I checked out their website and was fairly impressed with its feature set and its ability to put it in an 8052! I find it interesting that it supports POSIX which is something I have helped worked on for one of my clients in-house RTOS. This one seems a little more feature rich than the in-house RTOS. Has anyone else heard of NuttX and has given it a try? If so, how does it compare to other RTOS's such as FreeRTOS?
