  • What can I do to give some more love and disk space to my database on Ubuntu?

    - by Yaron Naveh
    I'm new to linux. I've deployed a db to ubuntu server on amazon and found out I'm low on disk space. did df (see below) - and found out that I'm 89% capacity on one file system, but less on others. What does this mean? Do I have a few partitions and can now utilize others besides /dev/xvda1? Also /dev/xvdb seems large, is it safe to put the db in it and only use it? If so do I need to mount it or do something special? $> df -lah Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/xvda1 8.0G 6.7G 914M 89% / proc 0 0 0 - /proc sysfs 0 0 0 - /sys none 0 0 0 - /sys/fs/fuse/connections none 0 0 0 - /sys/kernel/debug none 0 0 0 - /sys/kernel/security udev 3.7G 8.0K 3.7G 1% /dev devpts 0 0 0 - /dev/pts tmpfs 1.5G 164K 1.5G 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 3.7G 0 3.7G 0% /run/shm /dev/xvdb 414G 199M 393G 1% /mnt

  • SSH as root using public key still prompts for password on RHEL 6.1

    - by Dean Schulze
I've generated rsa keys with cygwin ssh-keygen and copied them to the server with ssh-copy-id -i id_rsa.pub [email protected] I've got the following settings in my /etc/ssh/sshd_config file RSAAuthentication yes PubkeyAuthentication yes AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys PermitRootLogin yes When I ssh [email protected] it still prompts for a password. The output below from /usr/sbin/sshd -d says that a matching keys was found in the .ssh/authorized_keys file, but it still requires a password from the client. I've read a bunch of web postings about permissions on files and directories, but nothing works. Is it possible to ssh with keys in RHEL 6.1 or is this forbidden? The debug output from ssh and sshd is below. $ ssh -v [email protected] OpenSSH_6.1p1, OpenSSL 1.0.1c 10 May 2012 debug1: Connecting to my.ip.address [my.ip.address] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file /home/dschulze/.ssh/id_rsa type 1 debug1: identity file /home/dschulze/.ssh/id_rsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file /home/dschulze/.ssh/id_dsa type 2 debug1: identity file /home/dschulze/.ssh/id_dsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file /home/dschulze/.ssh/id_ecdsa type -1 debug1: identity file /home/dschulze/.ssh/id_ecdsa-cert type -1 debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_5.3 debug1: match: OpenSSH_5.3 pat OpenSSH_5* debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0 debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_6.1 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT received debug1: kex: server->client aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: kex: client->server aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REQUEST(1024<1024<8192) sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_GROUP debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_INIT sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REPLY debug1: Server host key: RSA 9f:00:e0:1e:a2:cd:05:53:c8:21:d5:69:25:80:39:92 debug1: Host 'my.ip.address' is known and matches the RSA host key. debug1: Found key in /home/dschulze/.ssh/known_hosts:3 debug1: ssh_rsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: Roaming not allowed by server debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic,password debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering RSA public key: /home/dschulze/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic,password debug1: Offering DSA public key: /home/dschulze/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic,password debug1: Trying private key: /home/dschulze/.ssh/id_ecdsa debug1: Next authentication method: password Here is the server output from /usr/sbin/sshd -d [root@ga2-lab .ssh]# /usr/sbin/sshd -d debug1: sshd version OpenSSH_5.3p1 debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA debug1: private host key: #0 type 1 RSA debug1: read PEM private key done: type DSA debug1: private host key: #1 type 2 DSA debug1: rexec_argv[0]='/usr/sbin/sshd' debug1: rexec_argv[1]='-d' debug1: Bind to port 22 on 0.0.0.0. • Where is all the memory being consumed?

    - by Mark L
Hello, I have a Dell R300 Ubuntu 9.10 box with 4GB of memory. All I'm running on there is haproxy, nagios and postfix yet there is ~2.7GB of memory being consumed. I've run ps and I can't get the sums to add up. Could anyone shed any light on where all the memory is being used? Cheers, Mark $ sudo free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3957 2746 1211 0 169 2320 -/+ buffers/cache: 256 3701 Swap: 6212 0 6212 Sorry for pasting all of ps' output but I'm keen to get to the bottom of this. $ sudo ps aux [sudo] password for mark: USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 1 0.0 0.0 19320 1656 ? • Better Method of Opening TTY Permissions

    - by VxJasonxV
At work, I have a few legacy servers that I log into as root, and then su down to a user. I continue to run into an issue where after doing so, I am unable to run screen as this user. I don't want to open screen as root, because then I have to consciously su down the user every new shell, and I often forget. The question is, is there an easier resolution to this than I'm currently aware of? My current solution is to find my terminal pts number, then set it chmod 666. I'm looking for something akin to X11's xhost ACL management, if such a thing exists for this situation.

  • Changing startup parameters for MySQL

  • Find files containing a string on the whole filesystem

    - by Fabio
I need to find all the instances of a given string in the whole filesystem, because I don't remember in which configuration files, script or any other programs I put it and I need to update that string with a new one. I tried with the following command `grep -nr 'needle' / --exclude-dir=.svn | mail [email protected] -s 'References on xxx' If I run this command on a small directory it gives me the output I need in the form /path1/:nn:line containing needle /path2/:nn:line containing needle where /path1 is the full path of the file, nn is the row containing the needle and last field is the content of the line. However when I run the command on the root directory the grep process hang after a while. I run this script about 8 hours ago and even on a small filesystem (less than 5GB) it doesn't end and if I run top or ps the process seems sleeping root 24909 0.0 0.1 3772 1520 pts/1 S+ Feb10 0:15 grep -nr needle / --exclude-dir=.svn Why it doesn't end? Is there any better way to do this (it's a one time job, I don't need to execute this more than once) Thanks.

  • Apache fails silently after installation of MapServer 6.2.0

    - by wnstnsmth
I've recently compiled MapServer 6.2 on a CentOS 6.3 machine, using ./configure --with-ogr=/usr/bin/gdal-config --with-gdal=/usr/bin/gdal-config --with-proj=/usr --with-geos=/usr/bin/geos-config --with-postgis=/usr/bin/pg_config --with-php=/usr/include/php --with-wfs --with-wfsclient --with-wmsclient --enable-debug --with-threads --with-wcs --with-sos --with-gd --with-freetype=/usr/bin --with-jpeg --with-cairo --with-curl if that is of interest, anyway. So after that, Apache/2.2.15 silently fails to restart, i.e. when apachectl graceful, it says "httpd not running, trying to start". There is nothing of interest in the Apache errors_log, /var/log/messages, and it is weird because so far it has always worked. Restarting the machine multiple times did not solve the problem. Some other stuff I did: [root@R12X0210 cgi-bin]# service httpd status httpd is stopped [root@R12X0210 cgi-bin]# ps aux|grep httpd root 1846 0.0 0.0 103236 864 pts/0 S+ 12:11 0:00 grep httpd I suspect this might have something to do with a php module that was altered/added by MapServer, but I don't really know... I don't even know how to properly debug this.

  • How do I find out what a Spam Custom Rule is?

    - by SoaperGEM
We use a Barracuda Spam Filter at work, and we also provide a mass emailing program to some of clients that send out newsletters. Lately one of them's been composing his latest company newsletter and has been trying to send preview messages to himself, but they've actually been quarantined by Barracuda as potential spam, even though they aren't. I can see the breakdown of the spam scoring headers in Barracuda, but I'm not sure what certain rules mean. Here's the breakdown: pts rule name description ---- ---------------------- -------------------------------------------------- 0.00 FUZZY_CPILL BODY: Attempt to obfuscate words in spam 2.21 HTML_IMAGE_ONLY_24 BODY: HTML: images with 2000-2400 bytes of words 0.00 HTML_MESSAGE BODY: HTML included in message 0.50 BSF_SC0_SA_TO_FROM_ADDR_MATCH Sender Address Matches Recipient Address 1.00 BSF_SC0_SA392f Custom Rule SA392f What is "Custom Rule SA392f"? Where do I find descriptions of these custom rules? And what does "images with 2000-2400 bytes of words" mean? Is that referring to the file size of the image, or something about the attributes on the <img> tag?

    - by OtagoHarbour
I have MySQL installed on Ubuntu 11.10. I has been working fine for months but yesterday I started getting the following message ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) and cannot get rid of it. I tried /etc/init.d/mysqld start and got bash: /etc/init.d/mysqld: No such file or directory The /etc/init.d/ directory contains mysql but not mysqld. I tried sudo service mysql restart It just hung for about half an hour and then I ctrl-C-ed it. I then tried sudo service mysql start I got mysql start/running But when I tried mysql I got ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) I tried ps aux|grep mysql and got peter 17754 0.0 0.0 4196 768 pts/1 S+ 09:38 0:00 grep --color=auto mysql I ideas about fixing this problem would be most appreciated.

A friend, using a remote machine, ran a script that SSHed to my machine, and ran the following python script that resides on my machine: while (1): ....print "hello world" (this script simply prints 'hello world' continuously). I am now logged in to my machine. How can I see the output of the script my friend was running? if it helps, I can 'spot' the script my friend is using: me@home:~$ ps aux | grep justprint.py **friend 7494 12.8 0.3 7260 3300 ? • New CentOS/cPanel servers showing high load averages at idle

    I have taken delivery of two identically specced CentOS/cPanel servers, showing the same behaviour of a resting load average of 1.30, 1.21, 1.16 and yet the CPU is sitting 100% idle. Hardware: Xeon(R) CPU E3-1270 4GB RAM Behavior:- top shows CPU 99.9% idle virtually no disk IO Some command output :- uname -a Linux server.myserver.com 2.6.18-308.4.1.el5PAE #1 SMP Tue Apr 17 17:47:38 EDT 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux top top - 10:37:50 up 1:47, 1 user, load average: 1.28, 1.20, 1.17 Tasks: 199 total, 1 running, 198 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.0%us, 0.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 99.9%id, 0.1%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 4125104k total, 438764k used, 3686340k free, 25788k buffers Swap: 2096440k total, 0k used, 2096440k free, 291080k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 1 root 15 0 2160 640 552 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.89 init 2 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/0 3 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 ksoftirqd/0 4 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/0 5 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/1 6 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 ksoftirqd/1 7 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/1 8 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/2 9 root 35 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 ksoftirqd/2 10 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/2 11 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/3 12 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 ksoftirqd/3 13 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/3 14 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/4 15 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 ksoftirqd/4 16 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/4 17 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/5 18 root 38 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 ksoftirqd/5 19 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/5 20 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/6 21 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 ksoftirqd/6 22 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/6 23 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/7 24 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 ksoftirqd/7 25 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/7 26 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:06.42 events/0 27 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 events/1 28 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 events/2 29 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 events/3 30 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 events/4 31 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 events/5 32 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 events/6 33 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 events/7 34 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 khelper 35 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kthread 45 root 13 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/0 46 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/1 47 root 14 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/2 48 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/3 49 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/4 50 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/5 51 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/6 52 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/7 53 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kacpid 189 root 11 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 cqueue/0 190 root 11 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 cqueue/1 191 root 12 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 cqueue/2 192 root 12 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 cqueue/3 193 root 13 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 cqueue/4 194 root 13 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 cqueue/5 195 root 14 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 cqueue/6 196 root 14 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 cqueue/7 199 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 khubd ps axf PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 1 ? A kernel/driver conflict perhaps? I don't see any processes in R or D state that might inflate the load averages artificially, I realise it may be considered low in an 8 thread system but its higher at idle than any normal behaviour I've previously come across. • URGENT: help recovering lost data

    - by Niels Kristian
I have made a directory: sudo mkdir /ssd, the directory was supposed to be mounted to a raid array called md3. This was done by adding /dev/md3 /ssd auto defaults 0 0 to fstab. Then after a while where I had used the directory, I realized that I had forgotten to run sudo mount -a - and then I did, and now the data is gone. I tried to uncomment the line in fstab and run sudo mount -a but that didn't get back my data. What can I do!? CONTENT OF FSTAB: proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0 /dev/md/0 none swap sw 0 0 /dev/md/1 /boot ext3 defaults 0 0 /dev/md/2 / ext4 defaults 0 0 /dev/md3 /ssd auto defaults 0 0

  • Ubuntu server 12.04.03 not checking disk partitions on reboot?

    - by jamesc
My MOTD is showing: *** /dev/md2 will be checked for errors at next reboot *** *** /dev/md1 will be checked for errors at next reboot *** *** /dev/md3 will be checked for errors at next reboot *** However, a standard sudo shutdown -r now does not appear to check the disks and the message remains. My guess is that the partitions 'should' be checked and that they are not being... so how can I get Ubuntu to check the partitions at reboot and keep things nice and safe? Update - this is the output of cat /etc/fstab proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0 /dev/md/0 none swap sw 0 0 /dev/md/1 /boot ext3 defaults 0 0 /dev/md/2 / ext4 defaults 0 0 /dev/md/3 /home ext4 defaults 0 0 Update 2 - One message gone... Using @christianwolff's suggestions... sudo rm /var/lib/update-notifier/fsck-at-reboot sudo touch /forcefsck sudo shutdown -r now And now the motd is down to *** /dev/md1 will be checked for errors at next reboot *** *** /dev/md3 will be checked for errors at next reboot *** So 'md2(ext4)' has been checked and the message updated.

  • Setting Rails up on a Linode - Nginx Issue

    - by rctneil
I am extremely new to this so please don't shoot me down: I have set up a Linode running Ubuntu, It is all sort of working except Nginx. I am following this guide: http://rubysource.com/deploying-a-rails-application/ And this for nginx: http://library.linode.com/web-servers/nginx/installation/ubuntu-10.04-lucid When I go to my IP, I get a 500 internal server error. I have tried starting nginx and it looks like it starts fine. I run this: ps awx | grep nginx and I get: 308 ? Ss 0:00 nginx: master process /usr/sbin/nginx 2309 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2311 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2312 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2313 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2850 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto nginx I really am not sure what else to do to get it running. Any help? Neil

  • close ssh sessions

    - by egor7
I'm using ~/.ssh/config for logging to the internal.local corporate server: Host internal.local ProxyCommand ssh -e none corporate.proxy nc %h %p But after closing session (typing exit), my sshd session on server stays still active (I see it through different connection). Hot do I close session or change my config in the appropriate way, to eleminate hang sessions? First check from the second, root session: ps -fu user_name user_name 861 855 0 16:58:16 pts/3 0:00 -bash user_name 855 854 0 16:58:13 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/ssh/sshd After logging out: user_name 855 854 0 16:58:13 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/ssh/sshd Just after scp files to/from the internal.local a new scp sessions still hangs on the server.

  • PPTP server stuck at "GRE: Bad checksum from pppd"

I am a network engineer having quite limited experience with Ubuntu. I have been following up these online instructions to set up a pptp server but without much luck to get it to work. My server is a vm running an Apple Xserve behind a Cisco firewall. I made sure tcp 1723 and GRE are opened for the box. Below is the syslog output, looks like I always got stuck at GRE: Bad checksum from pppd. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04. • Point in polygon OR point on polygon using LINQ

    - by wageoghe
As noted in an earlier question, How to Zip enumerable with itself, I am working on some math algorithms based on lists of points. I am currently working on point in polygon. I have the code for how to do that and have found several good references here on SO, such as this link Hit test. So, I can figure out whether or not a point is in a polygon. As part of determining that, I want to determine if the point is actually on the polygon. This I can also do. If I can do all of that, what is my question you might ask? Can I do it efficiently using LINQ? I can already do something like the following (assuming a Pairwise extension method as described in my earlier question as well as in links to which my question/answers links, and assuming a Position type that has X and Y members). I have not tested much, so the lambda might not be 100% correct. Also, it does not take very small differences into account. public static PointInPolygonLocation PointInPolygon(IEnumerable<Position> pts, Position pt) { int numIntersections = pts.Pairwise( (p1, p2) => { if (p1.Y != p2.Y) { if ((p1.Y >= pt.Y && p2.Y < pt.Y) || (p1.Y < pt.Y && p2.Y >= pt.Y)) { if (p1.X < p1.X && p2.X < pt.X) { return 1; } if (p1.X < pt.X || p2.X < pt.X) { if (((pt.Y - p1.Y) * ((p1.X - p2.X) / (p1.Y - p2.Y)) * p1.X) < pt.X) { return 1; } } } } return 0; }).Sum(); if (numIntersections % 2 == 0) { return PointInPolygonLocation.Outside; } else { return PointInPolygonLocation.Inside; } } This function, PointInPolygon, takes the input Position, pt, iterates over the input sequence of position values, and uses the Jordan Curve method to determine how many times a ray extended from pt to the left intersects the polygon. The lambda expression will yield, into the "zipped" list, 1 for every segment that is crossed, and 0 for the rest. The sum of these values determines if pt is inside or outside of the polygon (odd == inside, even == outside). So far, so good. Now, for any consecutive pairs of position values in the sequence (i.e. in any execution of the lambda), we can also determine if pt is ON the segment p1, p2. If that is the case, we can stop the calculation because we have our answer. Ultimately, my question is this: Can I perform this calculation (maybe using Aggregate?) such that we will only iterate over the sequence no more than 1 time AND can we stop the iteration if we encounter a segment that pt is ON? In other words, if pt is ON the very first segment, there is no need to examine the rest of the segments because we have the answer. It might very well be that this operation (particularly the requirement/desire to possibly stop the iteration early) does not really lend itself well to the LINQ approach. It just occurred to me that maybe the lambda expression could yield a tuple, the intersection value (1 or 0 or maybe true or false) and the "on" value (true or false). Maybe then I could use TakeWhile(anontype.PointOnPolygon == false). If I Sum the tuples and if ON == 1, then the point is ON the polygon. Otherwise, the oddness or evenness of the sum of the other part of the tuple tells if the point is inside or outside.
