  I run some processes on an EC2 cc2.8xlarge instance which has 32 virtual processors. For some type of processes, when I run 16 processes on parallel, all of them use 100% of CPU cycles. But for other type of processes, they are not using 100% CPU and they finish considerably slower than a single thread. There is no time spend on IO and all data is served from memory. Do you have any idea about the reason of this problem?

• Socks5 proxy "Dante" leaves many child processes stuck in FIN_WAIT2 / CLOSE_WAIT state

  I'm running dante v1.2.1 as a SOCKS proxy server. The proxy works fine but at the end of the day there are around 40-50 or more child processes of sockd running even though there are no active connections. lsof shows that the child processes all have sockets in the CLOSE_WAIT and FIN_WAIT2 state. These child processes stay in this state unless I manually killall/restart the daemon. I'm running Gentoo Linux on a 2.6.24-23-xen kernel. I recently upgraded from dante v1.1.19-r4 which was giving me the exact same problem. Is this a configuration issue with Dante, my system, or is it a coding issue in the dante code?

• Stuck GhostScript processes, how to debug?

  Having a problem with Ghostscript processes that don't end. This does not happen often, probably once every 3 weeks we see this issue with 1-3 processes. Running CentOS 6.4 on a VPS from Rackspace. We use PrinceXML to generate PDFs which uses GhostScript to handle fonts. I'm a developer not a server admin so I have a basic knowledge of *nix but no clue on how to fix this. Installed strace and ran it on each process with the following command: strace -p 20619 -s 80 -o gs.txt Left it for 5m, gs.txt is empty? Thanks in advance!

  IIS7 ASP.net 2.0 Number of worker processes growing out of control in single app pool. Appear to keep spawning upwards. Monitoring the w3wp.exe process i can see "current connections" to web service sometimes spawn out of control but not always , only worker processes are consistently growing when this issue occurs. Number of worker processes normally 0 - 20 , when spawning they can reach 1000 + This was deployed in: %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet.config maxConcurrentRequestsPerCPU="50000" maxConcurrentThreadsPerCPU="0" requestQueueLimit="50000" But issue still occurs. Have tried running PROCDUMP on the exe process but the mini dump isnt a great help. I understand this is 99% probable an app issue , what i need help with is tracking it down. Thank you for any tips. • keyboard layout switching on restart

  I have two keyboard layouts that I use, My default keyboard is an USA layout, with a secondary Slovenian layout. I use the Slovenian layout only when I need some special characters when writing emails and such. But my problem is this: Every time I reboot my computer, the layout indicator shows I am on the USA layout, but the actual keyboard layout is Slovenian. Then I normally have to switch from USA to Slovenian and back, to get the layout I want. Is there anything I can do about this? I don't restart my computer often, but when I do I forget about that, and typing the passwords like that doesn't work.

  I edited /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/fr to customize the french-dvorak layout. I then selected french-dvorak layout (instead of french). Now when I restart Ubuntu, I end up with the non-edited french-dvorak (my changes are ignored). But if I switch to french, then back to french-dvorak, my changes are now taken into account... How can I have my custom french-dvorak on startup? Is there some sort of cached version of the keyboard layout? I don't understand how it can switch me to the official french-dvorak because I changed it, so it should no longer exist.

  So I recently installed Ubuntu on this computer, I just started using it today for the 2nd time, I needed to install some video plugins to use for the web and it asked me for a password. I do not remember ever setting a password during installation, and I am not asked for a password to login either. As far as I knew I never had a password before, is there a way to recover the user password from within ubuntu without entering into recovery mode? I do not see why I need to restart as I never need a password to start up the computer and log in...

Is there any method I could follow to set the brightness to a fixed value on everyboot and vary it as and when I need it using the Brightness Control Keys.

• Volume setting isn't remembered after restart/shutdown

  This is my first time here and I'm new to linux and also to Ubuntu. I've installed first version 11.10 and there was some problems with the unity dock and also the problem with the volume not being remembered after restart or shutdown. I'm using dualboot with Windows 7. Ubuntu was installed after windows. I have 2 sound cards. One is onboard, on the motherboard, and the other is external, an E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 sound card. The last one is my primary sound card and I've choosed it as default output sound card. I've upgraded to 12.04 hopeing that this was fiex but even in this version the OS doesn't keep the volume where it was last time. The big problem is that sometimes I forget about this problem and start music and it starts at full volume and soon I think I will die of heart attack. Is there a way to make it remember or at least to tell him to start at a specific volume not at 100%?

  I have an Aspire One with Ubuntu, that I use only when traveling, i.e. seldom. Yesterday I tried to start it, it informed me that I had to install a new release of Ubuntu. The download went fine, then I left it for the night. In the morning I found error messages. I tried to restart, but nothing works any longer. The only backup I have is two USB keys made by the person who installed Ubuntu, that say Recovery Ubuntu 8 and Ubuntu 9.10 respectively. Right now I plugged the "8", selected F12 and instructed to boot from the USB key. It has been running for an hour, the screen still says ubuntu, the USB key flashes red. By the way, I have no precious data on this machine, I do not care about losing data. Please advise on what to do now. Thanks.

• Mint 13 no longer using NVidia card after restart

  Here's the story; I bought a new graphics card, along with other parts, about a week ago. I put them in, install new drivers everything's working fine. Now after a restart I boot into some lovely 1024x768 resolution with only one screen on. I check in the NVidia X Server settings to see if my screen was changed there, there's nothing there except Application profiles and nvidia-settings. I check hardinfo to see if the card is actually recognised; VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK106 [GeForce GTX 660] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) I don't really know much about the graphics end of things so I'm not sure what I should be doing here to fix this, I don't even know what I should be looking FOR even, so any help is much appreciated! • ASUS EeePC Fn+F2 ruins wireless until restart

  I managed to get my wireless working beautifully (ath5k driver working great), and it works over a disable/enable wireless cycle, even a suspend/wakeup cycle (read some people have issues with that). Unfortunately, I discovered that if I press Fn+F2 on my keyboard (Asus EeePC 900HA, so that's the wireless toggle key), wireless then stops working until I restart the computer. How can I fix this? I'm running UNR 10.10 (with Unity turned off tyvm!). I heard something about Jupiter controlling these keys, but what about asus-laptop? How can I fix this behaviour? TIA. (Note, I'm a power user, but still fairly new to Linux. I'm picking up speed though).

• ubuntu will not connect after restart

  Firstly, I hope this hasn't been covered elsewhere, I have searched but haven't found this particular problem. I updated to 12.04 a while back and though I now thoroughly regret that decision, I'm able to live with 12.04 and all it's odd little quirks. The one problem that I would like to fix is this. I have a small network, using a router modem which stays on most of the time. If the computer is switched off, when it is switched on again I have to click on "auto Ethernet" in "Network" in order to get on the internet. It then works fine. Previous versions just connected automatically on restart. When 12.04 says it is unable to connect, other computers on the network are able to connect. Thanks for any help.

  I was using ubuntu 11.10 with gnome-shell. I installed various useful softwares and ran system update using update manager which ran smoothly and asked me to restart my comp at the end. I restarted it to find that Ubuntu entries were missing from the GRUB bootloader and only memory test and windows are showing up. I took a lot of pain in installing various important softwares and cannot afford a re-installation. Tried to boot from the live cd and installed boot-repair and after running it .. it wasnt working properly .. it was just showing that it was "scanning systems" for more than an hour. Kindly help. • How to restore "working folders" upon restart?

  I am not sure I am working the problem correctly but I will try my best. I am newbie to ubuntu and I am using Ubuntu 11.10. On a daily basis but I have a set of 5-10 folders which I need to refer for my work. I am looking for a way if I can create a "workspace" of these folders so that upon restart in a single click all the folders in the workspace can be opened in different tabs. • Unexpected server restart - Windows 2003 SP2 fully patched

  I'm having problems with a server that has been restarting itself randomly for the past 3 months. The server is windows 2003 with SP2 Domain Controller and it is fully patched. I have seen the following errors in event log: Source: USER32 Category: None Type: Information Event ID: 1074 User: Domain\Administrator The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of computer (server name) on behalf of user domainname\Administrator for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found Reason Code: 0x840000ff Shutdown Type: restart I have ran out of ideas as to what might be causing this issue. The system is clean and not infected. There are no scheduled tasks responsible for the restart either. I'm considering moving the backup (Backup Exec 12.5) to a different server but I'm almost certain that this is not the issue as the restart times vary and do not match the scheduled backup jobs. Any suggestions to help me resolve this issue would be appreciated, thanks.

  I have a remote system that needs to resume on startup. If the system is simply powered on then the blades boot before the SAN is online and then the only thing you can do is restart the systems. Is it possible to restart the fibre channel controller? That way I could have a system restart the controller after boot, connect to the SAN and then restart all servers requiring SAN information? Please note that I'm not a sys admin, just shooting for ideas to get a clean startup to work, apologies if my terminology is wrong.

  After about half a day the IIS 6.0 ASP (VBScript) web server appears to die. It accepts TCP connections (i.e. I can telnet localhost 80 successfully) however it does not return any response. What could be the cause of this problem?

  Hi, I'm setting up a name server hosting DNS for a large number of domains, 50,000 - 100,000 domains. I will be using Bind9 and the service will need to be restarted several times a day. I have made some tests and it seems that restart of the Bind9 service scales very poorly with the number of domains. #domains | restart time ----------------------- 10,000 | 3.1 sec 25,000 | 8.9 sec 50,000 | 50 sec 100,000 | 7:50 min Is there some way to speedup the restart of the service? I have noticed that restart only utilizes one core, is there some way for it to use more cores? The Bind9 version is 9.7.1-P2 with default configuration. The server running Bind9 is a Intel Core 2 Due 2.93 GHz with 4 GB memory and Ubuntu Server 10.10. Any help will be appreciated. Jakob
