• Directing Multiple ccTLD's to 1 gTLD with a country specific subdirectory?

  We have multiple ccTLDomains and are thinking about how to best combine these into one. We want to do this to focus our link building efforts. We are running a website through which we offer a software-as-a-service. Therefore we could potentially sell to any country in the world. However, Germany is our most important market. We currently have a .com, .de, .nl. and .pl domain. All these domains have a high amount of unique content pages. What we are planning is to change everything to .com with language-based subdirectories, so .com/en/, .com/de/, etc. I have two questions concerning this issue: 1) How much of an advantage does a ccTLD have over a gTLD with country specific subdirectories in search rankings? So let’s say .de versus .com/de/? 2) How could we best redirect the visitors of our old ccTLD’s to our gTLD’s subdirectories? We would like to loose as few search engine rankings as possible. • how to display list of partition under 'Go' menu

  I'm installing ubuntu 12.04 on my asus A43S notebook, but couldn't see any other partition under the 'Go' menu. I tried 'sudo fdisk -l' seems fine, it displays all partition. I also installed ubuntu 12.04 on my PC but there were no problems, all partition are listed under the 'Go' menu, and automaticly mounted when I clicked on them. question is, how to display all partition just like on my PC does, I don't want to mount via terminal each time I need to access them. thanks.

• Package denyhosts in Ubuntu Trusty Tahr is deleted: temporary or forever?

  While doing a test-upgrade of our Ubuntu server to 14.04, I found that the package DenyHosts is no longer available. Installing it gives following error: apt-get install denyhosts Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package denyhosts Apparently it has been deleted, according to launchpad. Will Denyhosts be available in the final release of Ubuntu 14.04?

• HP 655 notebook (ubuntu 12.04) keeps consuming energy after closing the lid

  I am unable to change power settings so that when I close the lid the battery stops consuming energy. There are three options in the power settings menu: When the screen is closed: 1 Do nothing 2 Pause 3 Sleep First I could not change anything. I see all the options but I could not click on option 2 and 3. (grey text instead of black) I already made it possible to put in to sleep mode. But I can't pause (suspend) the laptop. Anyone an idea?

• What are some important guidelines when starting a software cooperative?

  We are a group of people who are about to start a software cooperative, which means all of us (and other future workers) will be the owners of the 'company' rather than having bosses and employees. We do this from ideological reasons but also because we believe this allows many advantages - power of democracy (see SE..) , motivation, creativity, good work relations and atmosphere and more. We do face some questions about how exactly ownership of our products should be split, should we give different percentage for different people which put in a different amount of work hours or brings expert knowledge. We want people to feel they get what they deserve, not more, not less, and we're not sure just splitting it even will give this feeling. What are some good guidelines for solving these questions in a cooperative?

• JQueryMobile - Problems with dialog boxes [closed]

  I'm programming in JQueryMobile, but I can't seem to get some things as I want. First it's good to tell I am mostly programming in a multi-page template. I have a login function in the web based app. The idea is that the user sees he's not logged in and the user can click on the button to log in. A dialog box pops up, in which the user can enter his credentials. This dialog box is in front of the previous page, in my case just index.php. The page for profile is at profile.php#profile. In this case the url for the dialog box is index.php#profile&ui-state=dialog. Don't ask me why, that's how JQueryMobile works, I guess. Anyway, after the user clicks on 'Login' in the pop-up, I want a new dialog to pop-up in which it says you are logged in and I want the content of the page behind it (index.php#profile) to refresh. Of course I want this all to move very smooth and no refreshing of the whole page, to prevent loading time and thus a blank screen for a second. In short: User not logged in Clicks on login Dialog pops up with form Clicks login New dialog pops up with 'success' (or whatever) in the same style as the previous dialog Clicks ok Page behind the dialogues has been refreshed without user noticing Also another thing that doesn't really work out for me: I can't seem to get a dialog to pop up, triggered by an action in another dialog. It just appears as a normal page.

• Application using JOGL stays in Limbo when closing

  I'm writing a game using Java and OpenGL using the JOGL bindings. I noticed that my game doesn't terminate properly when closing the window even though I've set the closing operation of the JFrame to EXIT_ON_CLOSE. I couldn't track down where the problem was so I've made a small reproduction case. Note that on some computers the program terminates normally when closing the window but on other computers (notably my own) something in the JVM keeps lingering, this causes the JFrame to never be disposed and the application to never exit. I haven't found something in common between the computers that had difficulty terminating. All computers had Windows 7, Java 7 and the same version of JOGL and some terminated normally while others had this problem. The test case is as follows: public class App extends JFrame implements GLEventListener { private GLCanvas canvas; @Override public void display(GLAutoDrawable drawable) { GL3 gl = drawable.getGL().getGL3(); gl.glClearColor(0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f); gl.glClear(GL3.GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT); gl.glFlush(); } // The overrides for dispose (the OpenGL one), init and reshape are empty public App(String title, boolean full_screen, int width, int height) { //snipped setting the width and height of the JFRAME GLProfile profile = GLProfile.get(GLProfile.GL3); GLCapabilities capabilities = new GLCapabilities(profile); canvas = new GLCanvas(capabilities); canvas.addGLEventListener(this); canvas.setSize(getWidth(), getHeight()); add(canvas); setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); //!!! setVisible(true); } @Override public void dispose() { System.out.println("HELP"); // } public static void main( String[] args ) { new App("gltut 01", false, 1280, 720); } } As you can see this doesn't do much more than adding a GLCanvas to the frame and registering the main class as the GLEventListener. So what keeps lingering? I'm not sure. I've made some screenshots. The application running normally. The application after the JFrame is closed, note that the JVM still hasn't exited or printed a return code. The application after it was force closed. Note the return code -1, so it wasnt just the JVM standing by or something the application really hadn't exited yet. So what is keeping the application in Limbo? Might it be the circular reference between the GLCanvas and the JFrame? I thought the GC could figure that out. If so how should I deal with that when I want to exit? Is there any other clean-up required when using JOGL? I've tried searching but it doesn't seem to be necessary. Edit, to clarify: there are 2 dispose functions dispose(GLAutoDrawable arg) which is a member of GLEventListener and dispose() which is a member of JFrame. The first one is called correctly (but I wouldn't know what to there, destroying the GLAutoDrawable or the GLCanvas gives an infinite exception loop) the second one is never called.

• Is there anything software-related I can do, to make ubuntu play high-quality mkv files smoothely?

  I've noticed that beyond let's say..a 20 MB/s bitrate, a movie would lag, played on my laptop.. It results in me missing the highest bitrated scenes of a movie.. And sometimes having to compromise for watching the movie at a lesser quality.. I was wondering if there's anything I can do software-wise to play movies smoothley..? At the moment Ubuntu is installed with all the default settings on an 60GB SSD I use VLC ofcourse.. I also have 2 1TB HDD - maybe I can use them as pagefiles? I don't really know alot about this so maybe this is irrelevant.. I took the laptop battery out since it was dead..but I think this is also irrelevant.. would appriciate a response, even if there's nothing that can be done software-wise :)

• Sprite batching in OpenGL

  I've got a JAVA based game with an OpenGL rendering front that is drawing a large amount of sprites every frame (during testing it peaked at 700). Now this game is completely unoptimized. There is no spatial partitioning (so a sprite is drawn even if it isn't on screen) and every sprite is drawn separately like this: graphics.glPushMatrix(); { graphics.glTranslated(x, y, 0.0); graphics.glRotated(degrees, 0, 0, 1); graphics.glBegin(GL2.GL_QUADS); graphics.glTexCoord2f (1.0f, 0.0f); graphics.glVertex2d(half_size , half_size); // upper right // same for upper left, lower left, lower right graphics.glEnd(); } graphics.glPopMatrix(); Currently the game is running at +-25FPS and is CPU bound. I would like to improve performance by adding spatial partitioning (which I know how to do) and sprite batching. Not drawing sprites that aren't on screen will help a lot, however since players can zoom out it won't help enough, hence the need for batching. However sprite batching in OpenGL is a bit of mystery to me. I usually work with XNA where a few classes to do this are built in. But in OpenGL I don't know what to do. As for further optimization, the game I'm working on as a few interesting characteristics. A lot of sprites have the same texture and all the sprites are square. Maybe these characteristics will help determine an efficient batching technique?

• Unable to make Window transparent in Ubuntu 12.10

  I have recently upgraded from ubuntu 12.04 LTS to 12.10 (x64). I used to have transparent window tittle bar using gconf-editor -> apps -> gwd. But in 12.10 editing the value isn't doing nothing. Also in ccsm many plugins such as: opacity, brightness, saturation, desktop cube and rotate cube are all gone. I love that transparent look very much and I want to get it back in 12.10. I'm using Nvidia 7200GS ; AMD Athlon 7750 ; 3GB Ram. Is there any way to get it working?

Hopefully not all attendees we're cheated though if you're considering attending a future Devteach it is recommended that you don't hold any expectation that they'll honour their promotions. • Bridging The Gap Between Developers And Testers With VS 2010

  On January 29th Etienne Tremblay and I presented infront of roughly 120 people in Ottawa a 7 hours "sketch" on how VS 2010 and TFS 2010 can help both devs and testers in their respective work.  The presentation focused on how a testers' work can positively influence a developers' work and vice versa.  The format was quite unusual as I said it's a "sketch" where Etienne and I "ignore" the audience and we do as if we were at work and the audience is sort of "spying" on us.  In all I'm quite pleased with the content we presented and the format sure was alot of fun to render and I think the audience liked it too...  The good news for you people reading this post is that it got RECORDED and it's now available for download in quick 25 to 35 minutes format on the dev teach web site:  http://www.devteach.com/ALM-TFS2010-Bridgingthegap.aspx   There where 2 cameras, one filming us and one capturing the screen for our demos.  We switch from one to another in an intersting flow and Jean-René Roy made sure he kept all our goofs and didn't edit those funny "oups moments" where we screw-up in the scenario...  Mostly educative but hilarious at times !!! • Powershell Set-BitsTransfer - access is denied

  Hi I have the following powershell script: Import-Module BitsTransfer Get-BitsTransfer -AllUsers | Set-BitsTransfer -SetOwnerToCurrentUser which is running on Server2008 R2. I get the error message: Set-BitsTransfer : Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) I have googled around but cannot seem to find the reason why this happens or how to fix this. I suspect it is a permission issue. I am logged in as local administrator and use the 'Run as administrator' option when starting powershell. I have also tried setting the execution policy, but it makes no difference. I am not aware of permissions on commands in powershell. Could someone please shed some light on this. Thanks. Rouan

• Strange permission errors in new PostgreSQL installation

  A freshly installed PostgreSQL (with configuration overwritten) won't start: $ sudo service postgresql start * Starting PostgreSQL 9.1 database server * Error: could not read /etc/postgresql/9.1/main/postgresql.conf: Permission denied Looks like it should be able to read it though: $ ls -l postgresql.conf -rw------- 1 postgres postgres 19450 2012-06-14 10:07 postgresql.conf But fine, I'll add chmod +r it to test if that works. $ sudo chmod +r postgresql.conf $ sudo service postgresql start * Starting PostgreSQL 9.1 database server * The PostgreSQL server failed to start. Please check the log output: Error: Could not open log file /var/log/postgresql/postgresql-9.1-main.log Huh? $ ls -l /var/log/postgresql/ total 4 -rw-r----- 1 postgres adm 827 2012-06-14 10:07 postgresql-9.1-main.log I don't get it. What can be wrong here? This used to work before. Can I maybe monitor what process attempts to open the file? It's Ubuntu 11.10 on EC2, using Chef. • Cross domain javascript form filling, reverse proxy

  I need a javascript form filler that can bypass the 'same origin policy' most modern browsers implement. I made a script that opens the desired website/form in a new browser. With the handler, returned by the window.open method, I want to retrieve the inputs with theWindowHandler.document.getElementById('inputx') and fill them (access denied). Is it possible to solve this problem by using Isapi Rewrite (official site) in IIS 6 acting like a reverse proxy? If so, how would I configure the reverse proxy? This is how far I got: RewriteEngine on RewriteLogLevel 9 LogLevel debug RewriteRule CarChecker https://the.actualcarchecker.com/CheckCar.aspx$1 [NC,P] The rewrite works, http://ourcompany.com/ourapplication/CarChecker, as evident in the logging. From within our companysite I can run the carchecker as if it was in our own domain. Except, the 'same origin policy' is still in force. Regards, Michel

  I'm trying to get Apache to redirect all http and https traffic to a single endpoint www.example.org. It is my understanding that I need to specify one specific IP address, because the Host directive is also sent encrypted. So the below works: <VirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xx:443> ServerName www.example.org # actual stuff happening here </VirtualHost> However, when I start adding the redirects to the config, like so: <VirtualHost xx.x.xx.xx:443> ServerName example.org Redirect permanent / https://www.example.org/ </VirtualHost> # long list of other domains stuff breaks. $ apache2ctl configtest [warn] VirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xx:443 overlaps with VirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xx:443, the first has precedence, perhaps you need a NameVirtualHost directive If I add a directive like so: NameVirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xx:443 Connecting to the (ssl part of the) server starts to fail. How do I solve this?

• Setting up SSL virtual hosts in Apache

  I'm trying to set up SSL, with SNI, in my apache and am getting the often-seen "ssl_error_rx_record_too_long" error in Firefox when accessing the site (https://test.me.dev.xxxx.net), from which I can conclude that the server is listening on port 443, but doesn't know to use SSL on it. The server is Ubuntu 9.04 with Apache 2.2.11 I enabled SSL in the default way (a2enmod ssl).
