  • How does Google manage to serve results so fast?

    I am building an autocomplete functionality for my site and the Google instant results are my benchmark. When I look at Google, the 50-60 ms response time baffle me. They look insane. In comparison here’s how mine looks like. To give you an idea my results are cached on the load balancer and served from a machine that has httpd slowstart and initcwnd fixed. My site is also behind cloudflare From a server side perspective I don’t think I can do anything more. Can someone help me take this 500 ms response time to 60ms? What more should I be doing to achieve Google level performance?

  • what webserver / mod / technique should I use to serve everything from memory?

    I've lots of lookuptables from which I'll generate my webresponse. I think IIS with Asp.net enables me to keep static lookuptables in memory which I can use to serve up my responses very fast. Are there however also non .net solutions which can do the same? I've looked at fastcgi, but I think this starts X processes, of which anyone can handle Y requests. But the processes are by definition shielded from eachother. I could configure fastcgi to use just 1 process, but does this have scalability implications? anything using PHP or any other interpreted language won't fly because it is also cgi or fastcgi bound right? I understand memcache could be an option, though this would require another (local) socket connection which I'd rather avoid since everything in memory would be much faster. The solution can work under WIndows or Unix... it doesn't matter too much. The only thing which matters is that there will be a lot of requests (100/sec now and growing to 500/sec in a year), and I want to reduce the amount of webservers needed to process it. The current solution is done using PHP and memcache (and the occasional hit to the SQL server backend). Although it is fast (for php anyway), Apache has real problems when the 50/sec is passed. I've put a bounty on this question since I've not seen enough responses to make a wise choice. At the moment I'm considering either Asp.net or fastcgi with C(++).

    I'm trying to setup Glassfish embedded with a WAR project that implements a REST API and then some static Javascript content that calls it. I got the WAR to deploy and the REST API is available with a context root of "/Users". How can I use Glassfish to serve static content with a context root of "/". So for example, if the user requests http://myserver.com/Users/some-REST-call it routes to the WAR application and http://myserver.com/somefile.js serves a static file from some directory?   • What is an efficient way to serve images (PHP)?

    Hey guys currently I am thinking of serving images using an image handler script. I have two sources of images. One is from my web images folder where images that are used to construct my site interface are served. The other is in each users images folder where they can store their own images. I was thinking of giving each user image a unique id and then searching that id with the image handler script and serving the image, and changing the file name. The problem is that my site images folder does not have any information in the database and thus has no ids, should I just serve directly? Also this way of serving user images does not seem like the most efficient.   • Ubuntu won't save my settings for thinkpad trackpoint

    I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 on a Thinkpad X200. To configure the trackpoint, I use "configure TrackPoint". Unfortunately I can't make Ubuntu saving my settings (concerning the sensitivity etc.). Whenever I reboot the computer, it's set to generic settings again. I already tried htorque's answer to a similar question and created a new udev-rule for the trackpoint-settings but it didn't helped. So, how can I make theses settings permanent?

  • Both Webmin & ISPConfig won't work on my Ubuntu Linode

    I followed the steps on this page to download and setup Webmin on my Linode Ubuntu server, however, when I try to visit https + my.ip.add.ress + :10000, the page just hangs and nothing loads. I already looked into my firewall settings. I uninstalled Webmin and installed ISPConfig and all its dependencies, and the same thing happens at https + my.ip.add.ress + :8080. This is my first time managing a server so there could be something I overlooked. But my server is a pretty vanilla Ubuntu 12.10 with LAMP stack installed exactly as per the instructions in Linode's documentation.

I have used the aspnet_regiis.exe tool with the following: Aspnet_regiis.exe -s W3SVC/1/ROOT/DevTest but this hasn't helped. It added it to IIS as an application but I am still getting the error: The project cannot be debugged because virtual directory "DevTes" is not configured with ASP.NET version 2.0 or 3.0 Use aspnet_regiis.exe to configure the local IIS web server. I am not really sure where to go from here so need some help please: Machine specs: Windows 7 64bit, IIS7, Using RAD Studio 2007.

    I have an new ubuntu (hardy 8.04) server, it has two users, User1 and User2. User1 is listed in sudoers. I appended my public ssh key (my local machine's public key local/Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa.pub) to authorized_keys in remote_server/home/user1/.ssh/authorized_keys, changed the permissions on user1/.ssh/ to 700 and user1/.ssh/authorized_keys to 600 and both file and folder are owned my User1. Then added I User1 to sshd_config (AllowUsers User1). This works and I can login into User1 debug1: Offering public key: /Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-rsa blen 277 debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey). debug1: channel 0: new [client-session] debug1: Entering interactive session. Last login: Mon Mar 15 09:51:01 2010 from ..*.* I then copied the authorized_keys file remote_server/home/user1/.ssh/authorized_keys to remote_server/home/user2/.shh/authorized_keys and changed the permissions and ownership and added User2 to AllowUsers in sshd_config (AllowUsers User1 User2). Now when I try to login to User2 it will not authenticate the same public key. debug1: Offering public key: /Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /Users/nick/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /Users/nick/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: No more authentication methods to try.   • Ad Server does not serve ads in Firefox, but works fine in Chrome, IE, & Safari!?

    I'm having a strange (likely JavaScript) related issue. I'm running Open X Ad Server ( http://www.openx.org ) which serves ads to the website http://upsidedowndogs.com . The ads load fine every time when visiting the site via Chrome, IE, or Safari, but sometimes don't load at all in FireFox - Hence, it is a client side issue, which leads me to believe its something up with the javascript. The fact that the problem is intermittent, and does not through any error codes to FireBug, also doesn't make it any easier to diagnose and address. Any ideas how to diagnose / address this issue?   • Sql serve Full Text Search with Containstable is very slow when Used in JOIN!

    Hello, I am using sql 2008 full text search and I am having serious issues with performance depending on how I use Contains or ContainsTable. Here are sample: (table one has about 5000 records and there is a covered index on table1 which has all the fields in the where clause. I tried to simplify the statements so forgive me if there is syntax issues.) Scenario 1: select * from table1 as t1 where t1.field1=90 and t1.field2='something' and Exists(select top 1 * from containstable(table1,*, 'something') as t2 where t2.[key]=t1.id) results: 10 second (very slow) Scenario 2: select * from table1 as t1 join containstable(table1,*, 'something') as t2 on t2.[key] = t1.id where t1.field1=90 and t1.field2='something' results: 10 second (very slow) Scenario 3: Declare @tbl Table(id uniqueidentifier primary key) insert into @tbl select {key] from containstable(table1,*, 'something') select * from table1 as t1 where t1.field1=90 and t1.field2='something' and Exists(select id from @tbl as tbl where id=req1.id) results: fraction of a second (super fast) Bottom line, it seems if I use Containstable in any kind of join or where clause condition of a select statement that also has other conditions, the performance is really bad. In addition if you look at profiler, the number of reads from the database goes to the roof. But if I first do the full text search and put results in a table variable and use that variable everything goes super fast. The number of reads are also much lower. It seems in "bad" scenarios, somehow it gets stuck in a loop which causes it to read many times from teh database but of course I don't understant why. Now the question is first of all whyis that happening? and question two is that how scalable table variables are? what if it results to 10s of thousands of records? is it still going to be fast.   • HELP!!! Upgrading to windows 2008 R2 server has caused major issue with screen scraping remote serve

    I have three servers. One is Windows 2003(A) and another is Windows 2008(B) and third one is also Windows 2008 (C). All of them are web servers. A and B contains classic asp pages and they are 32 bit servers and C contains asp.net pages and is 64 bit server. The asp pages of A and B use the screen scraping technology to render the asp.net pages from C. When A is ran, the asp.net page is rendered fine, meaning there are no broken images or file not found error. When B is ran, the images appears to be broken because its looking for those images in Server B instead of Server C itself. I believe this issue is caused by IIS 7 or 7.5 since IIS 6 has no problem scraping the remote server pages. Can you please help me with solution to this problem? This is sort of urgent since upgrading to windows server 2008 R2 now has been a major show stopper for us at the moment. Thanks in advance.

All the static content is served correctly if I run it locally via script/server but when I upload it to Heroku the top-level page loads correctly but the nested content returns a 404. I've found a number of resources (for example this question) which discuss static content in rails but they all seem to assume a fairly simple structure with a single directory containing all the files. Is there any way I can fix this?

    I scraped a bunch of pages using wget -m -k -E. The resulting files have names in the form foo.php?bar.html. Apache guesses everything after the ? is a query string, is there a way to tell it to ignore the ? as the query string delimiter (and see foo.php?bar.html as the requested file and not foo.php)? To save you a trip to wget manpage: -m : mirror recursively -E : foo.php?bar becomes foo.php?bar.html -k : convert links in pages (foo.php?bar now links to foo.php?bar.html inside of all the pages so they display properly)

  • Why will IIS 6 not serve my custom 404 page when I set the URL in 'Custom Errors'?

    I've got an ASP.NET MVC site & I've got an Errors controller with a NotFound action which works great for 404 errors that pass though .NET, but for stuff that doesn't (like static files) I've set the Custom Errors value for 404 to URL with a value of /Errors/NotFound. But when I do this & hit a non-existant page the site just gives me this: The system cannot find the path specified. Is this because it's a dynamic url, can IIS not redirect 404 requests to dynamic urls or have I screwed up the config somewhere?

  • What is the cheapest non-colocation way to serve about 10 static files at a rate of 100 megabits per

    I've looked at Amazon S3 and it costs roughly $4746 per month for 100 megabits/s (which translates into 31,640 Gigabytes of data transferred. That's at a rate of $0.15 per gig.) I haven't found a cheaper "cloud" option. I'm curious if there's any other cloud hosting option out there cheaper than S3. Uptime is not an issue because I can build failover for most things into the browser. e.g. I can use javascript to say "if the image didn't load then go to this other URL instead." FYI I'm currently using a colocation facility which is about 30% cheaper than S3 and I'm familiar with colo prices - so this question is really about "cloud" services and by that I mean services where I don't have to worry about the infrastructure.

    I'm writing a Sinatra app which needs to render different layouts based on whether the user is using an iPhone or a regular browser. I can detect the browser type using Rack-Mobile-Detect but I'm not sure of the best way to tell Sinatra which layout to use. Also, I have a feeling that how I choose to do this may also break page caching. Is that true? A) Provide all the CSS used by the website in one (compressed) file B) Provide the CSS for required by the elements on the page that is currently being viewed only Positives for A: The entire CSS used on the site is cached on first visit via 1 http request Negatives for A: if it's a big file, it will take a long time to load initially Positives for B: Faster initial load time Negatives for B: More HTTP requests, more files to cache Is there anything (fundamental) that I am missing here?

  • How do you set up your web server & document's html to correctly serve HTML5 documents?

    Maybe I'm an idiot but I don't quite get what goes in the header of my HTML to use XHTML w/ HTML5. Is this still good and we just add the HTML5 tags?: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html dir="ltr" lang="eng" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> Or is it <!DOCTYPE html> or what? Then at A List Apart they say: If you do go with XHTML 5, remember that your server must deliver the documents with a MIME type of application/xhtml+xml or text/xml. Please explain to me as if I was stupid :) what that means in a practical sense? "deliver the documents"? Meaning html? What happens to php? What are the steps required to set up your web server this way?
