  • Something like PPerl for Ruby?

    I've used PPerl for deamon like processes. This program turns ordinary perl scripts into long running daemons, making subsequent executions extremely fast. It forks several processes for each script, allowing many proceses to call the script at once. Does anyone know of something like this for ruby? Right now I am planing on using a wrapper around curl to call a REST WebService written in Sinatra running on JRuby. I'm hoping there is a simpler option.

  • Am I missing something about LINQ?

    I seem to be missing something about LINQ. To me, it looks like it's taking some of the elements of SQL that I like the least and moving them into the C# language and using them for other things. I mean, I could see the benefit of using SQL-like statements on things other than databases. But if I wanted to write SQL, well, why not just write SQL and keep it out of C#? What am I missing here?

    Hi, say I have this class: class animal { function noise() { print 'woof'; } function move() { print 'moved'; } } class dog extends animal { } What I would like to do is when i run $dog-noise() or $dog-move(), it would run something first prior to calling animal class's noise/move. Is this doable? Like maybe logging the function call. If not with class extend, what else can I use to achieve this? Thank you!

    I used to love Reflector back in the day, but ever since RedGate took over it has gone downhill dramatically. Now it forces me to update (which is absolutely ridiculous), half the time the update doesn't go smoothly, and it is increasingly hindering my productivity with each update. I am sick of it, and I am ready for something better. Does anybody know of a better disassembler?

    I'm getting started with RegEx and I was wondering if anyone could help me craft a statement to convert coordinates as follows: 145.00694,-37.80421,9 145.00686,-37.80382,9 145.00595,-37.8035,16 145.00586,-37.80301,16 to 145.00694,-37.80421 145.00686,-37.80382 145.00595,-37.8035 145.00586,-37.80301 (Strip off the last comma and value and turn it into a line break.)     Well after fiddling with MVVM light to get my button to enable and disable when I want it to... I sort of mashed things together until it worked. However, I just know I'm doing something wrong here. I have RaiseCanExecuteChanged and CanExecute in the same area being called. Surely this is not how it's done?     I am just switching from C to C# and would like to invest sometime learning database work. I am overwhelmed with the options: Linq-to-sql, ADO.NET. nHibernate, EntityFramework, plain old sql (I am used to this). Since I have only limited 'learning' hours available (about 2.5 hours per day), where should I invest my time? I don't want to learn something that will be obsolete next month or for which no one will hire me.

    Short version: How do I set a Git remote's HEAD ref to point to something besides "master"? My project has a policy not to use a "master" branch (all branches are to have meaningful names). Furthermore, the canonical master repository is only accessible via ssh://, with no shell access (like GitHub or Unfuddle). My problem is that the remote repository still has a HEAD reference to refs/heads/master, but I need it to point to a different branch. This is causing two problems: When cloning the repo, there this, warning: remote HEAD refers to nonexistent ref, unable to checkout. That's confusing and inconvenient. The web-based code browser depends on HEAD as a basis for browsing the tree. I need HEAD to point to a valid branch, then.

    I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 which comes with Emacs 23. I need Jabref to push citations to Emacs. However, despite I installed the Jabref plugin to push citations through emacsclient, it's not working. I did my testing, and read some of the Emacs Lisp Intro. Some commands do work, for instance if I type (in the console): emacsclient --eval "(switch-to-buffer \"*sratch*\")" the emacs windows switches to that buffer. However if I issue an insert command: emacsclient --eval "(insert \"do you see me?\")" no text is inserted in the current buffer. Does Emacs 23 changed something about insert?

    I am trying to show a custom css depending on user permissions with a function like : <?php if ( !current_user_can( 'install_themes' ) ) { ?> <link media="all" type="text/css" href="<?php bloginfo( 'template_directory' ); ?>/library/styles/customAdmin.css" rel="stylesheet"> <?php } Perhaps I am being dense about this but I want to do the reverse and show specific CSS if a user can not, in this case, install_themes. I am doing it this way because the css hides parts of the admin area that I do not want hidden globally. I could probably do this with liberal use of !important in my style sheetsbut I was hoping there was an easier way to write this in the function. Or is there a way to write <?php if ( current_user_can('level_7') ) : ?> with something like if < level_7 ?

    I feel that it should be something very simple and obvious but just stuck on this for the last half an hour and can't move on. All I need is to split an array of elements into N groups based on element index. For example we have an array of 30 elements [e1,e2,...e30], that has to be divided into N=3 groups like this: group1: [e1, ..., e10] group2: [e11, ..., e20] group3: [e21, ..., e30] I came up with nasty mess like this for N=3 (pseudo language, I left multiplication on 0 and 1 just for clarification): for(i=0;i<array_size;i++) { if(i>=0*(array_size/3) && i<1*(array_size/3) { print "group1"; } else if(i>=1*(array_size/3) && i<2*(array_size/3) { print "group2"; } else if(i>=2*(array_size/3) && i<3*(array_size/3) print "group3"; } } But what would be the proper general solution?   • Unicode and PHP - am I doing something wrong?

    I'm using Kohana 3, which has full support for Unicode. I have this as the first child of my <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> The Unicode character I am inserting into is é as in Café. However, I am getting the triangle with a ? (as in could not decode character). As far as I can tell in my own code, I am not doing any string manipulation on the text. In fact, I have placed the accent straight into a view's PHP file and it is still not working. I copied the character from this page: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/00e9/index.htm I've only just started examining PHP's Unicode limitations, so I could be doing something horribly wrong. So, how do I display this character? Do I need to resort to the HTML entity?
