  • Video playback not working in Ubuntu 11.10

    (Ubuntu 11.10, Gnome Classic with Compiz, Nvidia graphics card) This problem occurs with every and all video, whether it's a Youtube video in Firefox, an AVI file in movie player, or any other video. Video simply does not work. When I start any kind of video, the image halts after a second or two. The sound, however, continues. Before it seemed that if I delete all the files in ~/.gstreamer-0.10/, then reboot, the video will play. However this is no longer the case. Manipulating files in that directory does nothing to help the situation. I am now no longer sure this is a gstreamer issue or something else. I am open to any and all possibilities. How can I get video playback to run smoothly on my machine?

    In iPhone OS 3, Apple has introduced HTTP Live Streaming which should allow live streaming of video from the internet. I am currently operating a webcam, which feeds into my server, and is then converted into a flv stream by ffmpeg, and streamed back out using ffserver. Does anyone know how to setup a video stream the iPhone can use using ffmpeg and ffserver? I should be able to re-encode into just about any format on the fly.

    I wanna add support of watermarking on my FLV videos. Previously I used to do that using FFMPEG's vhook option but due to some problems I had to upgrade it to the latest svn revision. This version of FFMPEG doesn't have vhook support anymore. I have tried mencoder with bmovl but mencoder seems to be pretty difficult to work with. Is there any other feasible option of watermarking FLV videos?

    The situation is that I work for a small college, and we have a student who will legitimately not be able to attend some classes for the next few weeks. Most of our professors use either powerpoint or a smartboard, and so we're shuffling things around so that all her classes take place in only two rooms. We want to set up those rooms to be able to live screencast (with audio) each lecture. I've seen other similar questions, but they're all more geared towards recording demos. I'm looking for something more like Live Meeting. Any suggestions appreciated.

    Hi. i know that in Linux i can stream using vlc and ffmpeg. i was able to successfully stream using vlc but only in static bitrates. i must set 400k/s or 800k/s. i want it to use as much upload bandwidth as it can consume. so if my internet line is not busy and i'm not downloading anything the quality will be better. is it possible to do such a thing?

  • How can I automatically encode a folder of wmv files to flv?

    I have a folder in which .wmvs are saved after they are finished recording. I would like to set up a script which encodes all of the files in this folder into .flvs with the appropriate size, frame rate, etc and then moves them to another folder. I have been looking for a command line .wmv to .flv converter to do this without much success. Has someone automatically encoded .wmvs to .flvs before that can point me in the right direction?

    I was recording a video when my KODAK EASYSHARE M531 Digital Camera fell to the ground and turned off. When i turned it on nothing happened to the camera but the video file is somehow broken.   • Synchronizing audio and video using MP4Box / ffmpeg to concatenate files

    I have two H.264 encoded MPEG-4 files that I need to concatenate. I have been using MP4Box for this task by first ensuring the files are encoded identically (even went so far as to compare output from h264_parse on their video tracks) and then concatenating with this command: MP4Box -cat file1.mp4 -cat file2.mp4 output_file.mp4 This works and the output file is playable, but on playback in Quicktime or VLC the second video's audio starts too soon, making the entire second part of the concatenated file out of sync. I have tried reencoding the output through ffmpeg with -vcodec copy and -acodec copy but the sync issue persists. I have also tried converting to MPEG-2 format first, concatenating with a simple cat file1.mpg file2.mpg > output.mpg and reencoding the result with ffmpeg. This was even worse. I know that I can pass commands to MP4Box to adjust the start time of the audio track, but I am trying to do this programmatically for any input video (in the same encoding of course). I am looking for possible solutions that would not require human intervention / manual adjustments. Or, at least, an understanding of what is happening to make the second part of the concatenated video go out of sync.

    Video in VLC or SMplayer is often in black and white with washed-out colors in the wrong place (translated considerably). Moreover, the last video image is often visible when a new video is started and persist as long as the new video is running. Colors have a recognizable shape (e.g. a persons clothes or face), but can be obviously incorrect (e.g. green or purples faces). This is independent of the format of the videos (mp4, mkv, wmv). Sometimes all problems disappear when a new video is started, but often only a reboot restores normal video. Ubuntu was upgraded to 14.04 and is fully updated.   • Trouble adding video controls to video selected by XML comboBox

    Hello, it's been a few years since I've touched flash, so perhaps I'm just overlooking something. If anyone could look at the code and offer any suggestions that would be awesome. What's working, I select a video from a combobox that is populated from an XML file, pick the video and it plays. I've been trying to add pause/play, stop, forward and reverse functionality, once I get that to work I also want to add a video scrubber(slider), and previous/next buttons to go to the previous/next video as listed in the xml file. At the moment I have a component button on the stage called playButton, which I'm trying to use for pause/play functionality. Below is my code, the player control is at the very bottom.   • How to get better video quality in Lync?

    I want to use a ConferenceCam from Logitech to stream talks live via Lync. When I view the RAW webcam image via VLC, the quality is very good (but the latency is high because of buffering). However, when I stream it using Lync, the video gets blurry. Is there a way to ensure QoS in Lync or otherwise improve the video quality to (near-)native? I would rather have some dropped frames than a lower resolution where I can't read the slides. In my setup, I use Lync with an Office365-E3 contract, so I have no Lync-Server in my network. I thought about replacing Lync completely with VLC, but I first want to try Lync because VLC will probably cause firewall issues. Also, I haven't looked up the VLC parameters for less buffering, faster encoding, a bit lower resolution (natively it's more than HD) and streaming.

    There's a webcam streaming WMV video that I can play/record with mplayer/mencoder (Debian Lenny including Debian-multimedia) just fine. I'd like to capture the video such that, when played back, it's faster (so say 100s of real time zooms past in every 1s of video). The "frameskip" filter seems like it ought to do this, but when I try e.g mencoder -o output.avi -ofps 25 -vf framestep=100 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:... <mms source URL> what I actually get is something which plays for the same length of time as it's allowed to capture for, but which only updates the displayed image every 4 seconds. Is there any way mencoder can be persuaded to do what I want ? (By the way, ideally I'd like to average the frames together to obtain motion-blur instead of just dropping/discarding most of them.).

    If I want to connect my laptop, which has a VGA output, to a monitor, I plug a VGA cable into both ends. The output being my laptop, and the input the monitor VGA output sockets are the same as VGA input sockets however, so what if I want to use my laptop as the monitor, with the video being outputted from somewhere else? As I said, VGA's output is the same as input, so in theory, I have the hardware in my laptop to do this. But presumably I need some software. So can I use the VGA port on a laptop as a video input? (And also, can this be done with HDMI?)

    My partner and I have a webcam site that basically runs the old-school method....Every 0.5 seconds the javascript reloads the image in the browser from the webcam. However we are wanting to upgrade to a streaming media server to get higher quality video, and possibly audio. We aren't tied to any one specific file format or server type, as of right now we are leaning towards slicehost (as scalability is important), and installing darwin streaming server or wowza.     Are you tired of static desktop wallpapers and want something a bit more entertaining? Today we’ll take a look at setting a video as wallpaper in VLC media player. Download and install VLC player. You’ll find the download link below. Open VLC and select Tools > Preferences. On the Preferences windows, select the Video button on the left. Under Video Settings, select DirectX video output from the Output dropdown list. Click Save before exiting and then restart VLC. Next, select a video and begin playing it with VLC. Right-click on the screen, select Video, then DirectX Wallpaper.   You can achieve the same result by selecting Video from the Menu and clicking DirectX Wallpaper.   If you’re using Windows Aero Themes, you may get the warning message below and your theme will switch automatically to a basic theme.   After the Wallpaper is enabled, minimize VLC player and enjoy the show as you work.     When you are ready to switch back to your normal wallpaper, click Video, and then close out of VLC.   Occasionally we had to manually change our wallpaper back to normal.   • How can videos from Ubuntu drive appear on web page and play in an embedded Flash Player?

    I have a shared folder on Ubuntu Server 12.04. Users drop videos in. Ubuntu runs a Cron task to convert them to FLV format and put them into another folder. All I would like is a simple web page that displays all the files in that folder as links, and when you click on the link for the video you want to play, it should play in the same web page inside an embedded Flash/SWF player. Sounds really basic but I'm actually struggling to find a simple solution. Any thoughts appreciated!
