  • Virtual Earth / Bing maps javascript file size

    I am working with a site that uses virtual earth for its mapping. Unfortunately the file size of the referenced javascript file, ecn.dev.virtualearth.net/mapcontrol/mapcontrol.ashx?v=6.2, is 200 something kb before being expanded (to 970kb). As our site runs under https this file is not cached on the client, and can cause a few seconds delay to users, made more substantial in times of high load. My question is, is there anyway to get virtual earth to run smaller, or have more efficient lazy loading? At the moment it looks like our hands are tied.

  • VEMap and a GeoRSS feed(hosted separately)

    The scenario is as follows: A WCF web service exists that outputs a valid GeoRSS feed. This lives in its own domain as a number of different applications have access to it. A web page(on a different site) has been created with an instance of a VEMap(Bing/Virtual Earth map object). Now, VEMap can accept an input feed in this format via the following: var layer = new VEShapeLayer(); var veLayerSpec = new VEShapeSourceSpecification(VEDataType.GeoRSS, "someurl", layer); map.ImportShapeLayerData(veLayerSpec, onComplete, true); onComplete is a callback function I'm using to replace the default pin graphic with something custom. The question is in regards to "someurl", which is a path to a local xml file containing the geographic information(georss simple format). I've realized this feed and the map must be hosted in the same domain, so I've created a generic handler that reads the remote feed and returns it in the same format. var veLayerSpec = new VEShapeSourceSpecification(VEDataType.GeoRSS, "/somelocalhandler.ashx", layer); When I do this, I get the VEMap error("z is null"). This is the same error one would receive when trying to access a remote feed. When I copy the feed into a local xml file(ie, "feed.xml") there is no error. The order of operations is currently: remote feed - local handler - VEMap import If I'm over complicating this procedure, let me know! I'm a bit new to the Bing Maps API and might have missed something. Any assistance is appreciated.

  • Why do my websites have a first page rank on Bing and Yahoo but not Google? [closed]

    I have 3 websites suffering from a drop in ranking with Google and hence a huge drop in traffic. The instant drop ocurred in September and I have not been able to remedy it. For the past 6-10 years my main website http://LearnToSail.Net has ranked from #3 to #1 on the 1st page of Google and all the other engines with the search term "learn to sail" Now it shows on the 1st page of Bing and Yahoo but does not show up on ANY pages of Google. The only way it does come up is if I add "cd" to the "learn to sail" phrase. We sell a sailing cd on that website. The other websites are http://LearnToSailOnLine.com ..search terms are "learn to sail online" or learntosailonline and historyofthepilgrims.com search terms are "history of the pilgrims" "historyofthepilgrims" I get the same result. Gone on Google but 1st pages for Bing and Yahoo. I have researched, edited,updated blogs, made sitemaps, prayed to the universe and use Google Webmaster tools but nothing is changing and I have lost alot of business. I host with 1and1.com and have been back and forth with them but to no avail and no change in traffic. I thought maybe some DNS mapping was off. I used to have alot of traffic now I have hardly any. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am still in the process of working on the issue of course! This is a really great website here and I am glad I came across it.   • What is a reasonly priced map API solution for a startup?

    I've been developing my application with Google Maps and the wonderful rails plugin for it, expecting to find that when I put my app into production that the commercial licensing wouldn't be too expensive. Then I found out it cost $10,000/year, no exceptions so far. http://www.47hats.com/2009/07/google-maps-the-10k-gotcha/ That's not a terrible price to pay for unlimited usage when your site becomes successful, but for those of us trying to build something from the ground up, that's a hefty price to pay. I've looked at Bing and Yahoo but they're very wishy-washy with what ballpark the pricing is. That on top of the fact I have to ditch my nice rails plugin YM4R for Google maps... Is anyone out there using a map API solution that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get started with in a commercial aspect? I don't mind not using a plugin, I just need something that will work and is cost affordable in the beginning.

My application is developed on the Google App Engine. I would like to add a search engine but obviously without the need to public index it. There's any solution avaiable from Google/Bing/Others for a situation like this? Have you done this before? What solution did you chose and what are yours results?

  • Changing Pushpin Text Color

    I'm attempting to display data through the text of a Pushpin object. However, the text color defaults to white which is nigh-invisible when the backdrop is a road-style MapView. Looking through the API, paying especially close attention to PushpinOptions, I couldn't find anything that manipulated text color. Considering that this seems to a fairly basic feature, I'm a little confused as to why it doesn't exist or at least is really hard to find. Am I missing something or does Bing Maps for Android really not let you change the default text color for a Pushpin object?

    Hi! Is it possible to get two "editions" of a website both indexed by the major search engines (Google/Yahoo/Bing/Teoma) which differ in content language only and are hosted under different TLDs? Say English content is available at "http://domain.com/", German content at "http://domain.de/". Now, if e.g. Google.com is used I want it to list the "domain.com" entry and vice versa. Is "Duplicate Content" an issue here? Thanks so much for advising me!

    While trying to use the Bing API to search, I am getting characters that are not printable and do not seem to hold any extra information. The goal is to save the XML (UTF-8) response as a text file to be parsed later.     I am currently working on an application that allows reverse geocoding using silverlight + bing maps. The thing is that I want to add a reference to the reverse geocoding service provided in msdn ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc879136.aspx) i.e. http:// dev.virtualearth.net/webservices/v1/geocodeservice/geocodeservice.svc?wsdl, but when I try to get a reference in vs2010, I get the following error: The document at the url http:// dev.virtualearth.net/webservices/v1/metadata/geocodeservice/geocodeservice.wsdl was not recognized as a known document type.   • Is there a rule of thumb for what a bing map's zoom setting should be based on how many miles you want to display?

    If a map contains pushpins/waypoints that span only a couple of miles, the map should be zoomed way in and show a lot of detail. If the pushpins/waypoints instead cover vast areas, such as hundreds or even thousands of miles, it should be zoomed way out. That's clear. My question is: is there a general guideline for mapping (no pun intended) Bing Maps zoom levels to a particular number of miles that separate the furthest apart points? e.g., is there some chart that has something like: Zoom level N shows 2 square miles Zoom level N shows 5 square miles etc.?

    I know the bits just came out today, but one of the first things I want to do with the newly released Windows Mobile 7 SDK is put a map up on the screen and mess around. I've downloaded the latest version of the Silverlight Maps Control and added the references to my application. As a matter of fact, the VS 2010 design view of the MainPage.xaml shows the map control after adding the namespace and placing the control. I'm using the provided VS 2010 Express version that comes with the Win Mobile 7 SDK and have just used the New Project - Windows Phone Application template. When I try to build I get two warnings related to the Microsoft.Maps.MapControl dll's. Warning 1 The primary reference "Microsoft.Maps.MapControl, Version=1.0.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=498d0d22d7936b73, processorArchitecture=MSIL" could not be resolved because it has an indirect dependency on the framework assembly "System.Windows.Browser, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e" which could not be resolved in the currently targeted framework. "Silverlight,Version=v4.0,Profile=WindowsPhone". To resolve this problem, either remove the reference "Microsoft.Maps.MapControl, Version=1.0.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=498d0d22d7936b73, processorArchitecture=MSIL" or retarget your application to a framework version which contains "System.Windows.Browser, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e".   • Virtual Earth Shape Rendering Performance

    I am overlaying a transparent image on my VEMap control by rendering it as a single VEShape. The shape changes sizes dynamically depeding on the zoom level of my map and can be as large as 4000*4000px. In older browsers such as IE6 and early versions of Firefox 2.x, map control performance degrades rapidly when my shape gets larger than 1500*1500px. The mouse pointer moves slowly and the map responds very slowly to events. I don't see this issue at all in newer browsers (IE7+). Are there any workarounds to boost performance of rendering a large shape for IE6 users?

    I am trying to figure Bings Seach API out. I have added the SOAP service to my solution, and I do receive results. The issue, is that the displayed results are always the same, not matter what I have set the request.Web to. When I do the search, it displays 98 results, so it isn't the lack of results.   • Why does the infobox in my MSN Map not close?

    I'm having a bit of trouble with this map, invoked by the "View our interactive map" button in the middle of the content area. If you double click a point such as 8 which causes a zoom and then afterwards it causes the info box to appear, the hide logic is wrong. If you try to close the x, it will fail. This is probably because the user clicked too fast and the map thinks its in zoom mode when infact it should be in info box mode. Has anyone ran into this issue before? Looks like I have to mess around with window.ero.hide and some other functions.. because map.HideInfoBox doesn't hide the map. EDIT: The script used is here. I did not code it, but the relevant bit has: onclick="EnableEroHide();map.HideInfoBox();changePin();return false;" The map.HideInfoBox() should hide the info box.

  • suddenly cannot mount nfs share from Windows 7

    I recently reinstalled my file server (moved from fedora to Ubuntu server). Now I cannot mount my nfs share from Windows 7, mounting from Mac OSX works fine. In Windows I either keep getting "the semaphore timeout period has expired" or "an unexpected error has occured". Does Ubuntu need some special magic to allow Windows 7 to mount an nfs share? This is my exports file /home/Bing/ 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check) /home/Bing/mnt/EXTRN2 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check) /home/Bing/mnt/EXTRN3 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check)
