• How do I download a corrupted package again?

  Ubuntu 12.04 can't install Firefox 13 update, because the package is corrupted. While attempting to install, returns this error (I translated it from my language to English). /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb W: Waited for dpkg --assert-multi-arch but was not there - dpkgGo (10: There are no "child" processes). I can tell that the package at /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb is corrupted, but even as admin, I can't delete it in order to be downloaded again. How should I proceed? EDIT: There was a single package causing this conflict, please report here to understand all the situation: Why can't I install from software center?

• Unstable after moving headless server from usb-hdd to usb pendrive

  Ubuntu server 12.04.1 running from usb-hdd is rock solid for months. After copying the partitions to a Kingston usb pendrive the system will only run for 3-4 days before some services fail. Is running 12.04.1 from usb pendrive a viable approach? How do I troubleshoot the problem? In the meanwhile, I have reverted back to usb-hdd. Willing to buy a usb pendrive that is known to work. Recommendations?

• Ubuntu not starting up after shutdown while upgrading

  I had ubuntu 11.10 installed and I was upgrading it to Ubuntu 12.04.1. While upgrading my computer got shut down due to heating issues. Afterwards its not starting up and gets stuck at a black screen. I can use ctrl+alt+f1 to go to command line. But I dont know how to resolve this issue from there. It shows me a message the ubuntu release 12.04.1 is available and run the command "do-release-upgrade" to upgrade to it. But when I run this command, it errors out saying "no new release found". Can anyone suggest what to do ? Thanks !

• I Can't install Skype on Ubuntu 12.04 x64. Can someone help me?

  I'm having a trouble when trying to install Skype on my Ubuntu 12.04.1 x64. My notebook have compatible hardware with Ubuntu. My previous OS installed on this machine was the Ubuntu 12.04 x64 and Skype was working great, but I got a formatation and I installed the New ubuntu 12.04.1. When I try to install by the Ubuntu software Center, or by the sudo apt-get install skype, I get this error message (in Portuguese) : "Os pacotes a seguir têm dependências desencontradas: skype: Depend: skype-bin E: impossivel corrigir problemas, você manteve (hold) pacotes quebrados." Something like i have the skype-bin package missing (or broken). I can't find it on Software center. I tried to install it by downloading a deb package with the skype-bin package but it ask for a lot another packages! I tried install the .deb package from the official Skype site, but I got the same error! Any Help? Sorry about my bad English, I'm Brazilian

  my specs intel mb dh67cl corsair 4gb ram nvidia 560ti gtx i5 processor dell 22" monitor 1920x1080 firstly, i began using ubuntu last year. now im in love with it. just one minor detail i dont like is that the bootscreen changed just after the first boot. now im using 12.04.1. i will explain how it happened. first i installed ubuntu via windows. so it booted for the first time and life was beautiful. the resolution was 1920x1080. then i installed the nvidia drivers, all the updates and codecs for the medias. now the ubuntu bootscreen downscaled to a lower resolution. i tried searching for answers, but nothing was for ubuntu 12.04.1. since im a newbie, i didnt want to take any chances. i need help. i like the bootscreen.

What I get is only a screen with random background. I'm wondering anyone got a similar problem. Is it because of the v14.04? Thank you

• Monitor randomly shutting down, computer accepting no input, need to restart to get working

  First off, spec list: OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 CPU: i7-4820k @ 3.7GHz (stock) GPU: Two 3GB Radeon HD 7970s @ 1.05GHz Mobo: AsRock X79 Extreme6 HDD: 2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm RAM: 16GB quad-channel Kingston 1600MHz PSU: Antec HCG 900W Monitors: Acer S220HQL 1920x1080 + ViewSonic VA2251 1920x1080. Plugged into different GPUs. My problem is that, on a daily-ish basis, my monitors will turn off and not turn back on. My computer will still be running, GPU/CPU/case fans all still going, but the monitors will not turn back on. Additionally, it seems to cease all network activity. It doesn't seem to log any errors at all. I've verified that this is not a monitor issue, as when I press the num/caps/scroll lock buttons on my keyboard, the lights don't change, so the computer is clearly not accepting input. I have noticed a few other people on the internet with this problem, and some have claimed that it was solved by disabling PCI-Express Link State Power Management, but the issue still occurs for me after this. Whilst my CPU and GPUs both run at 100% 24/7, the temperatures are certainly not at dangerous levels, with the CPU averaging 65°C and the GPUs at 70°C and 78°C average. All components are brand new. I have tried forcing MSI Afterburner to start when Windows starts and to force a constant voltage, as this fixed the issue for a few days for another user, but he reported back saying that it had stopped working properly again, so I'm not putting too much faith in this working. Many people have said to adjust display sleep mode settings, but this will clearly not work, as the keyboard lights would still work if the monitors were the issue. The closest I can get to a log file for this issue is the following Folding@Home logs: 14:45:21:WU01:FS00:0x17:Completed 1120000 out of 2000000 steps (56%) 14:46:43:WU00:FS01:0x17:Completed 480000 out of 2000000 steps (24%) 14:46:49:WU01:FS00:0x17:Completed 1140000 out of 2000000 steps (57%) 14:48:30:WU01:FS00:0x17:Completed 1160000 out of 2000000 steps (58%) 14:49:55:WU01:FS00:0x17:Completed 1180000 out of 2000000 steps (59%) As you can see, the second GPU (FS01) stops computation approximately three and a half minutes before the issue occurs (it should be completing 1% every 80-120 seconds), and the first GPU (FS00) continues for a few minutes more before the logs just end. As far as I can tell, the computer has a network failure at the time the first GPU stops working, the latest IRC message I received from this time was at 14:47:58. That being said, there could have just not been any messages between then and 14:50:00, so I'm going to be connecting a laptop to the same bouncer to double-check if it happens again. The GPUs functioned perfectly well in another computer for a significant period of time, so I'm fairly confident that they aren't the issue, which means that this is being caused by either software or the motherboard, or possibly RAM. I really hope it's software. I heard from a forum board that there was a patch from Microsoft that fixed this problem, but "I've forgot which KB it was or the google search terms I used to find the patch, LOL.", so that's not much help. Haven't seen it mentioned by anyone else on about a dozen threads about this issue either. The computer is plugged in via a surge-protected power board, and I've run several other computers and pieces of hardware through it with no issues, so that is not the cause. I have just set the hard disk to never turn off, although I don't believe that that will solve the issue. Strangely, this has only happened when I'm not at the computer (which is actually a minority of the time). Until today it had only happened when I had not been actively using the computer for 6 hours, but today it happened within 10-30 minutes of me last using the computer actively. I have enabled file logging from MSI Afterburner, so hopefully this will shed some light on the issue, but I'm not too optimistic. I've heard that it could be a motherboard problem, but I figured I should ask around before RMAing it. Any help?

• Submitting R jobs using PBS

  I am submitting a job using qsub that runs parallelized R. My intention is to have R programme running on 4 different cores rather than 8 cores. Here are some of my settings in PBS file: #PBS -l nodes=1:ppn=4 .... time R --no-save < program1.R > program1.log I am issuing the command "ta job_id" and I'm seeing that 4 cores are listed. However, the job occupies a large amount of memory(31944900k used vs 32949628k total).   I'm having this problem with GWT when it's behind a reverse proxy. The backend app is deployed within a context - let's call it /context. The GWT app works fine when I hit it directly: http://host:8080/context/ I can configure a reverse proxy in front it it. Anybody know how to make GWT happy in this case? Software versions: GWT - 1.7.0 (same problem with 1.7.1) Jetty - 6.1.21 (but the same problem existed under tomcat) nginx - 0.7.62 (same problem under apache 2.x) I've looked at the traffic between the proxy and the backend using DonsProxy, but there's nothing noteworthy there.

It seems that the expression *&(ap+1) on line 14 is the culprit here. I thought all three pointer expressions on line 14 are equivalent. Why am I thinking wrong? A second related question: The line char *ap = a; points to the first element of array a. I used char *ap = &a[4]; to point to the 5th element of array a. Is the expression char *ap = a; same as the expression char *ap = &a[0]; Is the last expression only more verbose than the previous one? Thanks a lot...

• Multiple items in a PHP shopping cart

  I'm in the progress of making a shopping cart in PHP. To check if a user has selected multiple products, I put everything in an array ($contents). When I output it, I get something like "14,14,14,11,10". I'd like to have something like "3 x 14, 1 x 11, 1 x 10". What is the easiest way to do that? I really have no clue how to do it.   I often browse freely-available art on the web. Actually, I can't think of a better use for the internet than to turn it into a gigantic art gallery. When I encounter a set of pieces I quite like, I download them all to my hard drive. wget makes that easy, especially in combination with Python's print function, and I use this all the time to make a list of URLs that I then wget. Say I need to download a list of jpegs that run from art0 to art100 in the directory 'art,' I just tell python for i in range(0,101): print "http://somegallery/somedirectory/art", i So, this is probably a fairly simple operation in Python, and after a find-and-replace to remove whitespace, it's just a matter of using wget -i, but in days before I knew any Python I'd slavishly right-click and save. Now I've got a bunch of files from Fredericks & Freiser gallery in New York that all go a(1-14), b(1-14), c(1-14), etc., up to the letter g. I could do that in 7 goes, and it would take me less time than it took to write this SO question. That said, I want to deepen my knowledge of Python. So, given the letters a-g, how do I print a mapping of each letter to the integers 1-14?

• Trying to match variables in a PHP array

  I'm stuck with a php array problem. I've to a webpage that takes values from a URL, and I need to cross reference those values against some values on the page and if they match output a 'yes'. It's an expression engine bodge job. The URL is something like domain.com/page/C12&C14 The C12 and C14 represent different categories. I've taken the last bit of the url, removed the 'C' from the values and then exploded the 12&14 into an array. I print_r the array on the page and it shows: Array ( [0] = 12 [1] = 14 ) So, the values are in the array. Lovely. Now on the page I have an html list which looks like 10 12 14 15 I want to output a YES next to the variables that are current in the array so the ideal output would be: 10 12 - YES 14 - YES 15 I was trying this but it keeps just saying No next to all of them. $currentnumber = 12; foreach ($tharray as $element) { if ($element == $currentnumber) { echo "Yes"; } else { echo "No"; } } I thought that should work, but it's not. I checked and the array and the variable are both stings. I did a strlen() on both to see if they are the same, but $currentnumber outputs '13' and the array variable outputs '2'. Any ideas as to why it's saying 13? Is the variable the wrong type of string - and if so how would I convert it?

  What would be the best approach to finding a date in a freeform text? A post where a user may place a date in it in several different ways such as: July 14th & 15th 7/14 & 7/15 7-14 & 7-15 Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th Saturday July 14th and 15th and so on. Is regex my best choice for this type of thing with preg_match? I would also like to search if there are two dates, one for a start date and a second for an end date, but in the text I'm searching there may be one date or two.
