• NFS issue brings down entire vSphere ESX estate

  I experienced an odd issue this morning where an NFS issue appeared to have taken down the majority of my VMs hosted on a small vSphere 5.0 estate. The infrastructure itself is 4x IBM HS21 blades running around 20 VMs. The storage is provided by a single HP X1600 array with attached D2700 chassis running Solaris 11. There's a couple of storage pools on this which are exposed over NFS for the storage of the VM files, and some iSCSI LUNs for things like MSCS shared disks. Normally, this is pretty stable, but I appreciate the lack of resiliancy in having a single X1600 doing all the storage. It turned out that pretty much all of the VMs were inaccessible, and that the ESX hosts either were describing each VM as 'powered off', 'powered on', or 'unavailable'. The VMs described as 'powered on' where not in any way reachable or responding to pings, so this may be lies. There's absolutely no indication on the X1600 that anything was awry, and nothing on the switches to indicate any loss of connectivity. I only managed to resolve the issue by rebooting the ESX hosts in turn. I have a number of questions: What the hell happened? If this was a temporary NFS failure, why did it put the ESX hosts into a state from which a reboot was the only recovery? In the future, when the NFS server goes a little off-piste, what would be the best approach to add some resilience? I've been looking at budgeting for next year and potentially have budget to purchase another X1600/D2700/disks, would an identical mirrored disk setup help to mitigate these sorts of failures automatically? • iTunes Music Store Link Maker — how to search from within my app?

  I'm writing a music reference app and for each album (pulled from last.fm) would like to link to the ITMS (if the album is in the store). iTunes link maker web tool http://apple.com/itunes/linkmaker/ is great for getting links for a known album but I need to access it programatically from within my app. This NSLog blogpost which is from 2003 but was referenced more recently in another question here seems to offer the only solution I've come across so far, suggesting to submit a query to: phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults? Put "itms://" before it and the link will work in iTunes, put "http://" before it and the link will work in Camino (Safari sometimes spits back a malformed XML error). The tags that are of importance are as follows: songTerm - song title artistTerm - artist name albumTerm - album name composerTerm - composer name term - all fields The suggestion is that would using http:// rather than itms:// the server will return an XML document of results instead of opening iTunes but either way I am sent directly to iTunes. Is it possible to get back a list of results?

  Hello, I am designing a web site that plays music. The music player itself will be in a separate window along with the now playing list. I want to be able to refresh the now playing list when a new song is added to it from the main window. Essentially I need to figure out how to communicate between the two windows. I was only able to find one plugin on line that defines the player page as a child of the main page but then this reference would be lost after the parent page i.e my main page was refreshed. So this was not very useful to me and I'm kinda lost atm. • Is there a way to create custom UIDataDetectorTypes?

  Hi All, What I am trying to do is create tooltip functionality so that certain words in my instructional app can be tapped and the definition pops up. For the popup part I plan on using code from “AFInformationView” which provides bubbles on the iPhone. The part I'm struggling with is how to associate A particular word's location with the bubble. Currently I have the text on a UILabel that is on a custom UITableCell. Since I calculate the row height on the fly with: [textToUse sizeWithFont:[UIFont systemFontOfSize:FONT_SIZE] constrainedToSize:CGSizeMake(stop-start, 500)]; I'm not sure what the coordinates for a specific word will be. I was thinking that if I created a custom DataDetectorType that could be the fix. If anyone knows how to do this or has any other ideas I would be happy to hear them. Thanks, Andrew

• Amarok on Ubuntu 9.10 rapidly skipping tracks

  Hello all. Subject really says it all. When I try to click on any track, Amarok rapidly moves through the playlist, pulling external information (wikipedia etc) for each song, but not playing it. I feel like it might be a problem with my sound card or driver or something, but all other media players work fine. I can play sounds from within Amarok when I test different sound devices (they all play). I removed the program and re-installed it and still no luck. Any ideas?

  I have my songs set-up in my MySQL database. Each song is is either assigned multiple locations or has no locations at all. Only the songs that either have no locations assigned in the database or have the location assigned to the ones specified below should be pulled from the database. I think it has something to do with my EXISTS code picking them up... Any ideas how I can get this to work?

  the iTunes song list display is a TableView that has a dotted scrollbar on the right which allows me to jump to a relative position of the list (i.e. if I click the bar at 2/3 down I am scrolled to the 66% position of the list. I want to do the same in my UITableView, but am not sure whether this is standard functionality that I can use (which class?) or whether this is a custom build ... If the latter, has someone got some samplecode that I could use as a template?

  I have a M3U playlist that has URLs for some MP3s around the web. It's on a server so I can open it on other computers and my iPhone. Unfortunately, all the players I've tried don't let me hit the "next" button to go to the next song in the playlist. Is there a way to specify that ability in the M3U file? Or, if not that, can I make a media player automatically shuffle the playlist? I could always make a script to shuffle it myself, but I'd like to use something built into M3U if it exists.

• Making a DVD video with a still image and PCM 16bit audio with ffmpeg

  I'm trying to make a small video with a still image and a sound file playing in the background to pass it to dvdauthor and create a DVD. The command I'm using is this: ffmpeg -loop_input -i image.jpg -qscale 2 -i song.flac -aspect 4:3 -target pal-dvd -acodec pcm_s16le -shortest output.mpg However, the resulting video file doesn't have sound at all (testing it on VLC Player). I don't know if I can't combine "-acodec pcm_s16le" with "-target pal-dvd" to override the later, or if there is something else wrong with the command. If I try without the "-acodec pcm_s16le" parameter the video and audio works, I can even create a DVD ISO with it. However, the audio stays as AC3. I wanted to include with the video the lossless audio, not a compressed one. I suppose the DVD standart allows to have PCM audio in it, am I right?

• Difference in amplitude from the same source using FFT

  Hi, I have a question regarding use of FFT. Using function getBand(int i) with Minim i can extract the amplitude of a specific frequency and do pretty maps of it. Works great. However, this is a more of a curiosity question. • Bash commands not executed when through cron job - PHP

  Hi there! I have a cron job running a PHP script every five minutes; the PHP script executes two bash commands at the end of the script. I know the script is running due to a log file it appends to. When I run the PHP script manually via the Ubuntu Gnome Terminal both bash commands execute flawlessly; however when the PHP script is triggered via cron, the two bash commands are not ran.   In my app, I have a User model and a Project model. A user has_many assignments and each project belongs_to a user. But along with each project having an owner, the user who created it, I would like the owner be able to share it with others (so that the project gets shown on the other users' account along with their own). I imagine having to use has_many :through, and setting up a projects_users table with a user_id and a project_id. And I guess this would be the end result? Project.first.user # The creator of the project => #<User id: 1, name: 'andrew', etc...> Project.first.users # The users that the creator chose to share it with => [#<User id: 2 ...>, #<User id: 3 ...>] How would I go about doing this?   Hi, I'm pretty new to C++ and have run into a problem which I have not been able to solve. I'm trying to convert a System::String to a wchar_t pointer that I can keep for longer than the scope of the function. Once I'm finished with it, I want to clean it up properly. • How can I override an HTML "rules" attribute using CSS?

  The DITA Open Toolkit automatically inflicts some inline table attributes when one publishes to HTML, including frame="border" and rules="all". I need to override this "rules" attribute using CSS styles for cells, and while I can get the desired result in IE and Chrome, Firefox puts solid black gridlines in the table and refuses to budge on the matter. Obviously I can't edit the HTML, company policy is to not edit the XSLT, so how can I remove these gridlines using CSS alone? I've tried various cunning combinations of border-xxxxxx styles and given them !important declarations to no effect. Thanks, Andrew

• stored procedure to find value in 2 columns out of 3

  I am putting in the samle date and i am supposed to do something similar what i am asking. I want to run a query that would pull values in any two columns out 3 if it has a 1 or if any one column has a 1 it will return just those results. However it should search all three columns and in any of the three columns where it found value as 1 it should return that result. Can anyone please help me with this. Thanks in advance.
