• Business and data layer in ASP.NET MVC

  Hi, I am new to ASP.net MVC architecture. I have read in some articles that Model will contain business and data access logic. So does this mean that i have to implement the business and data access layrers in side model folder? And it is obviously not possible to add class libraries (business layer and Data access layer of n tier) in Model folder. SO please let me know how to design business and data layer if i dont want to include my LINQ queries in Controller. Thanks, Amith

• Custom authorize using MVC

  Im working a bit with MVC. I need to know something about roles when using the same controller for several users getting and showing pictures. I need to show pictures, but sometimes these pictures should only be shown for those who created them. So now when using the Authorize attribute and if picture and username match thrue my databse I could ofcause use this to make a match. I could ofcause make a match method in the controller. [Authorize] controllGetPicture(Picture ID){ getSomepicture.. return picture } DB relations Relations [User] <- [Pictures] ID FK_UserID Im thinking about just getting the User ID and compare with the Picture FK_UserId at the picture but I think it could be smarter. How?

• Log4net rollingfile appender skipping every other day in asp.net mvc app

  Hi, I've set up some log4net logging on an asp.net mvc application i've had running for a little over a month now. I've set up rolling file (and smtp) appender on it. The application is hit several thousand times a day - alot of actions are logged. On top of these a number of batch jobs are run as part of the application that also write to the log. Now - as i've been occupied with other work, i've not attended to this application much assuming things to be working based on my test setup. Unfortunately i discover that the rolling file appender on my production server seems to be skipping every other day. Ie i have logs : 10/4/2010, 10/4/2010.1, 10/4/2010.2, 12/4/2010, 12/4/2010.1 , 14/4/2010, 14/4/2010.1 etc. Any idea what could be causing this? It is absolutely impossible that there has no action on these odd days for the lifetime of the application. Cheers

  Hi All, The problem: client needs a website to serve 10+ customers, each customer has 5-10 people they wish to grant access using login & user name, once "logged in" the user can download files specific to their company. The files will be uploaded to a directory under the customer name, and displayed as a list. Currently using membership for all of the users, it's just the "by customer" segmentation I'm wondering about. the question being under ASP.NET MVC what is the cleanest or simplest approach to solving the customer segmentation, trying to avoid customer membership provider so was going to use the roles to assign customer group. Thoughts appreciated.

• is it posible to upload directly to remote server using SFTP on ASP.net MVC

  Hi! I am currently develope something using asp.net MVC, im still quite not experience with it so please help me out. I have a form for user to upload Video. The current ideal concept to upload to remote server is to Upload it to to the current server, then use FTP to push it to a remote server. For me, this is not quite fast since you have to upload to current server (Time x1) and then the current server push to new server (Time x2) so it's double the time. So my idea is to make user upload it to the current server, and WHILE user is uploading, the current server add the file to DB and also send the file to the remote server at the same time using SFTP... is it posible and are there any security hole in this concept? • problem with dropdownlist in mvc application

  Hello, I am trying to work with an HTML.DropDownList in MVC and am not getting the expected return values. Here is my implementation for the selectList to bind to the drop down - IEnumerable<status> stat = _provider.GetAllStatuses(); Statuses = new SelectList(stat.ToList(), "id", "name", i.status.id); And here is my view - <%= Html.DropDownList("Status",Model.Statuses) %> I am getting an error when trying to run updatemodel in my controller. I then tried to individually set each object. It turns out that I am not getting a single int from the formvalue as I would expect to. Instead, I am getting a value like "5,10,2,3". I think this is coming from how I set up my selectlist, but I'm not exactly sure. Can anyone see an error in the way I am setting up this dd? Thanks for any help, and let me know if I can clarify anything.

• Mass 301 redirects mvc

  Hi (this is a common problem with few twists). We are on IIS 6, without ISAPI_Rewrite with .net 4 and mvc 2 app. We would like to 301 forward bunch of old urls to matching new urls. (We are deploying a new site and google index will still point to old urls, and we need to map those urls to new urls) a) Is there a way to do this through IIS (but without ISAPI_Rewrite) and how? b) Is there a way to do this through the application code and how? I'm reading the instructions from this website, it's an old post and I notice they specify in an update that Microsoft's MVC framework has long since included and Action Result that allows the same functionality they discuss thus rendering it obsolete, I've looked a bit online but haven't been able to find any resources that discuss this built-in functionality.   Which MVC-framework is the best option (performance/ease of development) for a web application, that will have + 2 million visits per week. Basically the site is a search engine,but also there will be large amounts of xml parsing, and high db traffic. We are using Java, over Jboss 4.2.3x, with PG as DB, and Solr for the searches. We were thinking on code JSPs with taglibs, and Servlets, but we were feeling like there would be a better alternative, which don't know yet, as we are starting on the Java Web applications world.   looking at different sites, i see conflicting conventions. if you want to have links to images, other pages, js files, i have seen: URL.Content("~/scripts/myscript.js"); <a href="/scripts/msscripts.js"> <img src="../../content/stylesheet.css"> <img src="../content/stylesheet.css"> these all seem to work in asp.net mvc but it seems like there are all doing slightly different things. I am moving to a new webserver where they are changing from iis redirecting to isapi rewriting and i was told to make sure my links were done in a correct way or the site not work. Can someone clarify what the "correct" way is ?

  I'm creating a ASP MVC application. And because of the complex authorization i'm trying to build my own login system. (So i'm not using asp membership providers, and related classes). Now i'm able to create new accounts in the database with hashed passwords. But how do i keep track that a user is logged in. Is generating a long random number and putting this with the userID in the database and cookie enough? Sorry for my rather bad english! Ty in advance :)

  I'm a real beginner with MVC and my issue is this, I have a mdf database with multiple tables and I want to have a method return "ANY" table from the database and pass it to a aspx view.   Greetings, can someone give me some advices or links that will help me to implement to following scenario. Page will be written in asp.net mvc. Authorization is going to be implemented by Memberships. The scenario is as follows: User1 has just logged in. After a while, User2 attempts to login with success. Then user1 should be notified that User2 has just logged in. Additionally User2 should be notified that User1 is online. How can I achieve something like that? • MVC, how view should be accessed from controller?

  Hello, I'm just learning MVC so you could find my question rather strange... My Controller have access to different shared objects through Container object passed to Controller's constructor. To access shared objects I should do $this-container-db to access Database adapter or $this-container-memcache to access Memcached adapter. I want to know should I put View object into Container with shared objects or no? From one side it is really comfortable to take view from this container, but this way I couldn't create multiple Views instances (for example, every time I'm calling Controller's method from View I should have one more View instance). What is the solution? How should I pass View object into Controller and/or how should I create new View instances from Controller? Thank you!

• MVC Serve audio files while preventing direct linking using HttpResponseBase

  I need to be able to serve audio files to an mvc app while preventing direct access. Ideally the page would render with a player control so the user can start/stop the audio linked to the database record (audio files are in a folder not the db). I have a controller action like this: Response.Clear(); Response.ContentType = "audio/wav"; Response.TransmitFile(audioFilename); Response.End(); return Response; and the view uses the RenderAction method <% Html.RenderAction("ServeAudioFile"); %> this works but it won't display inline on the existing view, it opens a new page with just the media control. Am I totally barking up the wrong tree or is there a way to embed the response in the existing view? works exactly as I would like but I can't control access to the file.

  Hi. Trying to run an MVC app on the 'portable' web server. Software is aspnetserve. (http://www.ohloh.net/p/aspNETserve) Cookies do not persist. They do fine when I run from visual studio debug. Code is fine, seemingly. Only are dead (fail to persist from page to page) when I use this server. My solution requires deploying a portable local solution like this for the app. (this isn't just being done for purposes of testing) Rather stumped right now. Any bright ideas? Thank you.

The problem that i am having is when i move to the second page it does not display anything.. • MVC - Sanitizing data, where?

  I'm using CakePHP but it's a question about the MVC pattern. I have in my form the input-text for the tags (separated by commas). To add the tags I've created a Tag model method that basically check if the tag exists and then add the new tag or just a new unit in the tag counter (the Tag model has these fields: id, name, slug, count). In the controller I explode the tags field and pass one tag at a time. The question is: where do I sanitize data? In the controller or in the model method? I think it should be in the controller because that's where I explode but in term of reusability I think I should sanitize data in the model. What do you think?

  Hello, I'm looking for a solution that allows me to get the parent page pathname from a partialView invoked. For example I have an Action baa and a controller boo so the javascript to obtain this will be window.location.pathname, and it returns /boo/baa. The thing is that I use a partial view, so when I try to retrieve the pathname via the URL helper, what I obtain is the PartialView one, and what I need is the pathname for the action that invokes it. I want to do this because I want to show certain things of the partial view depending on the pathname of the parent view that invokes it. Is there a way to do this with ASP.NET MVC? Basically I am running up against the issue of collisions between controllers. What I want is to have urls like /public/portfolio, but also have /private/portfolio. • MVC Forms Authentication with custom database

  I'm trying to get forms authentication working for an mvc site. I have a custom database with a users table, and I would like to do my own password validation. I am logging in my user like this: if (PasswordHasher.Hash(password) == dataUser.Password) { FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(email, true); return true; } The problem is, when the session expires obviously the user has to login again. I am thinking I should be storing this Auth cookie in my users table? Update: I'm obviously in desperate need of more education in this area. I just noticed that the user stays authenticated even after an iisreset. I guess what I'm asking is how can I get persistent and non persistent authentication working properly. I want a user to not have to login again if they click "remember", and if they don't then their authentication should expire when the forms authentication is set to expire.
