  • Closing an EDM ObjectContext?

    - by David Veeneman
I am getting started with the ADO.NET Entity Framework 4.0. I have created an EDM and data store for the app, and it successfully retrieves entities. The application holds the EDM's ObjectContext as a member-level variable, which it uses to call ObjectContext.SaveChanges(). So far, so good. I am going to refactor to repositories later. Right now, my question is a bit more basic: When I am finished with the EDM, what do I need to do to release it? Is it as simple as calling Dispose() on the ObjectContext? Thanks for your help.

  • special debugging lines (java)

    - by David
Recently i've found myself writing a lot of methods with what i can only think to call debugging scaffolding. Here's an example: public static void printArray (String[] array, boolean bug) { for (int i = 0; i<array.lenght; i++) { if (bug) System.out.print (i) ; //this line is what i'm calling the debugging scaffolding i guess. System.out.println(array[i]) ; } } in this method if i set bug to true, wherever its being called from maybe by some kind of user imput, then i get the special debugging text to let me know what index the string being printed as at just in case i needed to know for the sake of my debugging (pretend a state of affairs exists where its helpful). All of my questions more or less boil down to the question: is this a good idea? but with a tad bit more objectivity: Is this an effective way to test my methods and debug them? i mean effective in terms of efficiency and not messing up my code. Is it acceptable to leave the if (bug) stuff ; code in place after i've got my method up and working? (if a definition of "acceptability" is needed to make this question objective then use "is not a matter of programing controversy such as ommiting brackets in an if(boolean) with only one line after it, though if you've got something better go ahead and use your definition i won't mind) Is there a more effective way to accomplish the gole of making debugging easier than what i'm doing? Anything you know i mean to ask but that i have forgotten too (as much information as makes sense is appreciated).

  • Strict doctype - form and input element

    - by David
Does anyone know the reasoning behind the strict doctype not allowing input elements to be direct descendents of a form element. I find it annoying that i have to wrap a submit button which is a block level element inside another block level element say a fieldset or a div. However, I cannot find an answer anywhere as to why this actually is.

  • Writing a Virtual Printer in .NET

    - by David Osborn
I'm looking to create a virtual printer that passes data to my .NET application. I want to then create an installer that installs both the printer and the .NET application. It would we really nice to be able to write it all in C#, but I have a feeling that this will require a printer driver to be written is unmanaged code. Does anyone know of a fairly clean tutorial or example of how to do this?

  • Forcing Spring web services to add the xsd namespace to the response

    - by David Rabinowitz
    I'm using the Spring WS version 1.5.8. My response looks like this: <SOAP-ENV:Envelope xmlns:SOAP-ENV="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/"> <SOAP-ENV:Header/> <SOAP-ENV:Body> ... </SOAP-ENV:Body> </SOAP-ENV:Envelope> However, my client (whom I integrate with) requires that I will add more namespace declerations in order for the parsing to succeed: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <soapenv:Envelope xmlns:soapenv="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <soapenv:Body> ... </soapenv:Body> </soapenv:Envelope> How can I do it?

  • multi-dimension array value sorting in php

    - by David
Another potentially interesting (or n00b, whatever comes first) question. I am building up an array with a set of database fields with information about table, actual field name and descriptive field name as a multi-dimensional array. Here is what it currently looks like: $Fields['User']['ID'] = "User ID"; $Fields['User']['FirstName'] = "First Name"; $Fields['Stats']['FavouriteOrder'] = "Favourite Item Ordered"; $Fields['Geographic']['Location'] = "Current Location"; $Fields['Geographic']['LocationCode'] = "Current Location Code"; Okay, this is fine, but I am piping this into a system that allows exporting of selected fields, and in the end I want to foreach() through the different levels, extract the data and then ultimately have all the descriptive fields to be displayed sorted alphabetically using their descriptive name. So ultimately in the order: Current Location, Current Location Code, Favourite Item Ordered, First Name then User ID - obviously keeping index associations. I can't use usort() and I can't use array_multisort()... or maybe I can and I just don't know how. usort() seems to need a key to sort by, but I have variable keys. array_multisort() just seems to do the same as sort() really. Any ideas?

  • Editing a Gridview row with drop-down lists gets too wide - how can I use popup panels instead?

    - by David
I have a series of GridViews in a Tab Panel - databound to a generic List of Business Objects. The columns in the Gridview are all similar to the following: <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Company" SortExpression="Company.ShortName"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblCompany" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("Company.ShortName") %>'></asp:Label> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:DropDownList ID="ddlCompany" runat="server"></asp:DropDownList> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> The GridView generates the "Edit" link at the beginning of the row, all the events fire ok. The problem is that the data is getting long. When in 'display mode', it's fine because the GridView control is smart enough to break some text into multiple lines (in particular Project, Title and Worker names can get pretty long). The problem come in editing mode. Drop-down lists DON'T break entries into multiple lines (for obvious reasons). Going into Edit ode on a row in the Gridview can make the Griview expand horizontally to twice the screen size (blowing through the width limits in the Master page and CSS but that's only a related problem). What I need is something like the ModalPopup - but trying to tie it to an ID in an EditItemTemplate gives me errors when the page renders (because the 'ddlXXXX' doesn't exist at the time). In addition I don't know how to dynamically populate the panel so that I can get a response from it (like the ID of the Company they selected). I'm also trying to avoid javascript and would like this to be a 'pure' aspx/code-behind solution (for simplicity's sake among others). All the examples I find are of Modal Popups with the panels pre-defined. Even if it (the popup panel) were something like a list of checkboxes, it could be databound to the SortedList I have ready to go and an OK/Cancel button combination to accept or ignore things. I'm just not sure of what goes where. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in advance. EDIT: Final solution looks as follows: <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Company" SortExpression="Company.ShortName"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblCompany" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("Company.ShortName") %>'></asp:Label> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:LinkButton ID="lnkCompany" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("Company.ShortName") %>'></asp:LinkButton> <asp:Panel ID="pnlCompany" runat="server" style="display:none"> <div> <asp:DropDownList ID="ddlCompany" runat="server" ></asp:DropDownList> <br/> <asp:ImageButton ID="btnOKCo" runat="server" ImageUrl="~/Images/greencheck.gif" OnCommand="PopupButton_Command" CommandName="SelectCO" /> <asp:ImageButton ID="btnCxlCo" runat="server" ImageUrl="~/Images/RedX.gif" /> </div> </asp:Panel> <cc1:ModalPopupExtender ID="mpeCompany" runat="server" TargetControlID="lnkCompany" PopupControlID="pnlCompany" BackgroundCssClass="modalBackground" CancelControlID="btnCxlCo" DropShadow="true" PopupDragHandleControlID="pnlCompany" /> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> And in the code-behind, lstIDLabor is the generic List of data lines (of which Company is one of the properties that is also a business object) that is bound to the GridView: Sub PopupButton_Command(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As CommandEventArgs) Dim intRow As Integer Dim intVal As Integer RestoreFromSessionVariables() Select Case e.CommandName Case "SelectCO" intRow = grdIDCostLabor.EditIndex Dim ddlCo As DropDownList = CType(grdIDCost.Rows(intRow).FindControl("ddlCompany"), DropDownList) intVal = ddlCo.SelectedValue lstIDLabor(intRow).CompanyID = intVal lstIDLabor(intRow).Company = Company.Read(intVal) Case Else ' End Select MakeSessionVariables() BindGrids() End Sub

  • Multiple WCF windows services on the same box - endpoint configuration

    - by David Belanger
    Hi, I have 2 windows services installed on a machine with different service names, they install and start fine. What's happening is that they're both listening to the same endpoints and thus competing for messages. I've tried to change the baseAddress to be different for both services without success. Here's my service host config: <configuration> <appSettings> <add key="ServiceName" value="Service - Service Host 1"/> </appSettings> <system.serviceModel> <bindings> <wsHttpBinding> <binding name="NoSecurityBinding"> <security mode="None"> <message establishSecurityContext="false"/> <transport clientCredentialType="None"/> </security> </binding> </wsHttpBinding> <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="NoSecurityBinding"> <security mode="None"> <transport clientCredentialType="None"/> </security> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> </bindings> <services> <service name="Lib.Interface.Service" behaviorConfiguration="Lib.Interface.ServiceBehavior"> <host> <baseAddresses> <add baseAddress="http://localhost:8000/Service"/> </baseAddresses> </host> <endpoint address="" binding="basicHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="NoSecurityBinding" contract="Lib.Interface.IService"/> <endpoint address="mex" binding="mexHttpBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange"/> </service> </services> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name="Lib.Interface.ServiceBehavior"> <serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="True" policyVersion="Policy12"/> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="False"/> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> Any idea how I could set up the services (other than unique service names) so they're not conflicting with one another? Thanks.

  • Flex: Run scripts before/after build?

  • How do I debug a difficult-to-reproduce crash with no useful call stack?

    - by David M
I am encountering an odd crash in our software and I'm having a lot of trouble debugging it, and so I am seeking SO's advice on how to tackle it. The crash is an access violation reading a NULL pointer: First chance exception at $00CF0041. Exception class $C0000005 with message 'access violation at 0x00cf0041: read of address 0x00000000'. It only happens 'sometimes' - I haven't managed to figure out any rhyme or reason, yet, for when - and only in the main thread. When it occurs, the call stack contains one incorrect entry: For the main thread, which this is, it should show a large stack full of other items. At this point, all other threads are inactive (mostly sitting in WaitForSingleObject or a similar function.) I have only seen this crash occur in the main thread. It always has the same call stack of one entry, in the same method at the same address. This method may or may not be related - we do use the VCL in our application. My bet, though, is that something (possibly quite a while ago) is corrupting the stack, and the address where it's crashing is effectively random. Note it has been the same address across several builds, though - it's probably not truly random. Here is what I've tried: Trying to reproduce it reliably at a certain point. I have found nothing that reproduces it every time, and a couple of things that occasionally do, or do not, for no apparent reason. These are not 'narrow' enough actions to narrow it down to a particular section of code. It may be timing related, but at the point the IDE breaks in, other threads are usually doing nothing. I can't rule out a threading problem, but think it's unlikely. Building with extra debugging statements (extra debug info, extra asserts, etc.) After doing so, the crash never occurs. Building with Codeguard enabled. After doing so, the crash never occurs and Codeguard shows no errors. My questions: 1. How do I find what code caused the crash? How do I do the equivalent of walking back up the stack? 2. What general advice do you have for how to trace the cause of this crash? I am using Embarcadero RAD Studio 2010 (the project mostly contains C++ Builder code and small amounts of Delphi.)

  • Inherit static properties in subclass without redeclaration?

    - by David
Hi, I'm having the same problem as this guy with the application I'm writing right now. The problem is that static properties are not being inherited in subclasses, and so if I use the static:: keyword in my main class, it sets the variable in my main class as well. It works if I redeclare the static variables in my subclass, but I expect to have a large number of static properties and subclasses and wish to avoid code duplication. The top-rated response on the page I linked has a link to a few "workarounds", but it seems to have 404'd. Can anyone lend me some help or perhaps point me in the direction of said workarounds?

  • How to release a "PopUp" view"?

    - by david
I have this class that shows a popup. I do a alloc-init on it and it comes up. DarkVader* darkPopUp = [[DarkVader alloc] init:theButton helpMessage:[theButton.titleLabel.text intValue] isADay:NO offset:0]; It shows itself and if the user presses Ok it disappears. When do I release this? I could do a [self release] in the class when the OK button is pressed. Is this correct? If I do this the Analyzer says it has a retain count of +1 and gets leaked in the calling function. If I release it just after the alloc-init the Analyzer says it has a retain count of +0 and i should not release it. DLog(@"DarkVader retain count: %i", [darkPopUp retainCount]); says it has a retain count of 2. I'm confused. In short my question is: How do I release an object that gets initialized does some work and ends but no one is there to release it in the calling function.

  • Why does CGPDFPageGetDrawingTransform() crash with SIGABRT when specifying a rotation?

    - by David
When I call CGPDFPageGetDrawingTransform() with a rotation argument, the application crashes. If I specify no rotation, there is no crash. Here is my drawLayer:inContext: method: - (void)drawLayer:(CALayer*)layer inContext:(CGContextRef)context { CGContextSetRGBFillColor(context, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0); CGRect boundingBox = CGContextGetClipBoundingBox(context); CGContextFillRect(context, boundingBox); //convert to UIKit native coodinate system CGContextTranslateCTM(context, 0.0, self.bounds.size.height); CGContextScaleCTM(context, 1.0, -1.0); //Rotate the pdf_page CGAffineTransform pfd_transform = CGPDFPageGetDrawingTransform(self.page, kCGPDFCropBox, self.frame, 58.46f, true); CGContextSaveGState (context); CGContextConcatCTM (context, pfd_transform); CGContextClipToRect (context, self.frame); CGContextDrawPDFPage (context, self.page); CGContextRestoreGState (context); } In the long run, I would like to rotate the pdf dynamically to follow a users heading. Maybe I am going at this all wrong... Thank you for your time.

  • How would you mask data returned in a Dynamic Data for Entities website?

    - by David Stratton
I'm doing this in Visual Studio 2008, not 2010, in case there is a relevant difference between the two versions of the Dynamic Data websites. How would I mask data in the automatically generated tables in a Dynamic Data for Entities website? The scenario is we have one table where we want to allow users to ENTER sensitive data, but not VIEW sensitive data, so... (In the list below, I'm using "template" to mean "The web page generated automatically based on the schema and action. I'm sure that's the wrong terminology, but the meaning should be clear.) The "Insert" template should have the field's textbox available for the user to type a value in. The "Edit" template should have the field's textbox blanked out (empty string) regardless of what was in the field in the database in the first place, but the user should be able to type in new data and have it save The "View" template should either have the data for this field masked, or non-visible. The auto-generated table showing the list of records should also have this field masked or non-visible. I can do this easily with standard Web Forms, but I'm having a hard time figuring this out in the Dynamic Data site I'm working on. Masking data is such a common task, I have to believe Microsoft thought of this and provided a way to do it...

  • A monkey could do this better - Access to and availability of private member functions in C++

    - by David
I am wandering the desert of my brain. I'm trying to write something like the following: class MyClass { // Peripherally Related Stuff public: void TakeAnAction(int oneThing, int anotherThing) { switch(oneThing){ case THING_A: TakeThisActionWith(anotherThing); break; //cases THINGS_NOT_A: }; private: void TakeThisActionWith(int thing) { string outcome = new string; outcome = LookUpOutcome(thing); // Do some stuff based on outcome return; } string LookUpOutcome(int key) { string oc = new string; oc = MyPrivateMap[key]; return oc; } map<int, string> MyPrivateMap; Then in the .cc file where I am actually using these things, while compiling the TakeAnAction section, it [CC, the solaris compiler] throws an an error: 'The function LookUpOutcome must have a prototype' and bombs out. In my header file, I have declared 'string LookUpOutcome(int key);' in the private section of the class. I have tried all sorts of variations. I tried to use 'this' for a little while, and it gave me 'Can only use this in non-static member function.' Sadly, I haven't declared anything static and these are all, putatively, member functions. I tried it [on TakeAnAction and LookUp] when I got the error, but I got something like, 'Can't access MyPrivateMap from LookUp'. MyPrivateMap could be made public and I could refer to it directly, I guess, but my sensibility says that is not the right way to go about this [that means that namespace scoped helper functions are out, I think]. I also guess I could just inline the lookup and subsequent other stuff, but my line-o-meter goes on tilt. I'm trying desperately not to kludge it.

  • Print Several Outlook MailItems

    - by David Souther
I have a pst that has a bunch of emails I want to print using the Microsoft Document Image Writer so that I have a folder, //lawyers/ediscovery/emails/ that has 00001.tiff 00002.tiff etc. In Word or Excel, I can pass the Workbook or Document a filepath to the PrintOut method, but the Outlook MailItem interop's PrintOut doesn't take any arguments, instead only uses the default printer's attributies. I don't have time to type the Bates number for every email (thousands to tens of thousands). Any help on how to tell Outlook where to print to?

  • UITableViewCell is transparent when not supposed to be

I'm not sure why this is. Relevant code: UITableViewCell *cell = [table dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:emptyIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectZero reuseIdentifier:emptyIdentifier] autorelease]; } cell.textLabel.text = @"Empty"; cell.textLabel.textAlignment = UITextAlignmentCenter; cell.textLabel.backgroundColor = [UIColor whiteColor]; return cell;

  • LINQ Join 2 List<T>s

    - by David Murdoch
Preface: I don't understand what this does: o => o.ID, i => i.ID, (o, id) => o So go easy on me. :-) I have 2 lists that I need to join together: // contains ALL contacts for a customer. // Each item has a unique ID. // There are no duplicates. ContactCollection list1 = myCustomer.GetContacts(); // contains the customer contacts (in list1) relevant to a REPORT // the items in this list may have properties that differ from those in list1. /*****/// e.g.: /*****/ bool SelectedForNotification; /*****/// may be different. ContactCollection list2 = myReport.GetContacts(); I need to create a third ContactCollection that contains all of the contacts in list1 but with the properties of the items in list2, if they are there (list3.Count == list1.Count). I feel as though I'm not making any sense. So, please ask questions in the comments and I'll try to clarify.

  • SQLAlchemy custom sorting algorithms when using SQL indexes

    - by David M
Is it possible to write custom collation functions with indexes in SQLAlchemy? SQLite for example allows specifying the sorting function at a C level as sqlite3_create_collation(). An implementation of some of the Unicode collation algorithm has been provided by James Tauber here, which for example sorts all the "a"'s close together whether they have accents on them or not. Other examples of why this might be useful is for different alphabet orders (languages other than English) and sorting numeric values (sorting 10 after 9 rather than codepoint order.) Is this possible in SQLAlchemy? If not, is it supported by the pysqlite3 or MySQLdb modules, or for any other SQL database modules supported by python for that matter? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Flex: Unexpected leakage with RemoteObject + IExternalizable?

    - by David Wolever
I've been tinkering with IExternalizable, but I've noticed some unexpected behavior. I've got this class: public function readExternal(input:IDataInput):void { input.readObject(); input.readObject(); input.readObject(); } public function writeExternal(output:IDataOutput):void { output.writeObject("first string"); output.writeObject(424242); output.writeObject("second string"); } But when I try to serialize this class using AMF and send it to a remote server (via RemoteObject), Charles shows me that the request looks like this: But it seems wrong that my serialized object is leaking out into the rest of the request. So, what am I doing wrong? Is there some part of the documentation I've missed?
