  I am generating lots of images in java and saving them through the ImageIO.write method like this: final BufferedImage img = createSomeImage(); ImageIO.write( img, "png", new File( "/some/file.png" ); I was happy with the results until Google's firefox addon 'Page Speed' told me that i can save up to 60% of the size if i optimize the images. The images are QR codes, their size is around 900B each and the firefox-plugin optimized versions are around 300B. I'd like to save such optimized 300B Images directly from java. So here my question again: How to save optimized png images with java's ImageIO?

• How to force delete cookies even if one window is still open?

  Apparently in IE8, there is this option 'Preserve Favorites website data', even if I uncheck it the browser will still keep the cookies until the last window is closed. Problem scenario. say I logged in to somesite.com, then without out logging out, I closed the window, but there was still another IE8 window open. In this case IE8 will keep the cookies of this site. So If I opened the site again (same window or another) the site won't ask for login info. The client wants the web application to be logged off as soon as the user closes the browser. Can I force delete the cookies IE8 is saving? or maybe I can stop the user from closing the window until I simulate a click on logout button?

  I have an old c++ application that needs to be modified to work with windows 7. Problem is in creating a new folder and saving a file in that folder. This folder should be created in c:\program files\myApp\data\newFolder. However if I don't change any of the data then the data is not updated. i.e. only entries which are changed go through the for loop to be saved. I guess this makes sense as there is no point saving data if it has not changed. However I need to go through and save every object in the form regardless of whether it has any changes on not. So my question is how do I override this so that it goes through and saves every record whether it has any changes or not? Hope this makes sense Thanks

  I am developing a small browser based game in asp.net. Think of a game room which has a capaticy of 22 players and players join the room by clicking a button. ( I am saving the number of players in the room in database) I need to call a method when the number of players in the room is 22. The problem is I don't know how to control the number of players in the room. • More 'Edit' navigation item

  I am using a UITabBarController as well as a UINavigationController on my app. In my UITabBarController I am using more than 5 items so I automatically get the 'More' item. I've managed to add a saving procedure so the order of those items will be kept in case somebody changes the order etc. With 'More' active I get the More navigation controller with the 'Edit' item positioned under my UINavigationController. Both navigation controller are visible. When I click on 'Edit though the More navigation controller disappears and seem to be hiding under my UINavigationController and therefore I can't see/use the 'Done' function to save my new order What did I miss?   Can anyone tell me how to show animated progress bar while the data from an Excel sheet to a SQL database table is being transfered? I have a form in .aspx page. In that form, there is one FileUpload control that uploads an Excel file. While uploading that file and saving it on the server at the same time I'm transferring the data from the Excel sheet to a SQL table. During this transfer, I want to show a ProgressBar and after transferring all data it will be removed automatically.. Is there something I can do to achieve this?

Everything works fine. But when i clean and build my project. The whole folder of PhotoGallery gets deleted. This looks very funny to me :). Why does it delete my whole folder everytime? And what more should i do to tell the extra smart Glassfish to not to delete my folders?

  Hi all, I am beginning to use the google data api (specifically for the finance app). I can read my portfolio's just fine, so I am authenticating correctly (or so I think). However, when i try and create a portfolio, I get a 'feed is read-only' error. • Is gzip compression useful for mobile devices?

  Hi SO, I'm wondering if anyone has a clue on whether the gzip compression is as much useful on mobile devices than it is on a desktop computer. Will the phone use more battery? Or will it save some because of the bandwidth saving? Will the page page load faster or is the uncompress process slow on those limited devices? Does the compressed data actually reach the end-user or is it uncompressed somewhere by the 3G provider? (this may be a stupid question, sorry). Thank you.

I need to automate this whole process since i have approx 2000 HTML files which should be read and should be entered in a form in PHP. Do you have any idea about any tool which can help in this process. small idea will be also helpful. • How can I evaluate a deferred Linq statement when debugging?

  I'm debugging in VS2010, and I want to inspect a string value but all I can get the debugger to show me (through watches, hovering, locals, etc.) is: "System.Linq.Enumerable+<TakeIterator>d__3a`1[System.Char]" I don't care if there are side effects from premature evaluation or whatever, I just want to see what the expression would evaluate to if I evaluate it right now at the current breakpoint. How is this done? Also can I change my code in such a way that it evaluates earlier? Not that I care when I'm not debugging... but just wondering. In case it is relevant... (I doubt it.) I'm stuffing a new entity object before saving it to the database... some fields are assigned with LINQ statements, I'm not sure when they get evaluated under the covers of EF. The DB update fails with 'string or binary data would be truncated... So I'm trying to find the too-long field.

• NHibernate auditing in disconnected mode

  I'm developing an app with a Silverlight UI, transferring my domain objects over WCF and persisting them via NHibernate. I'm therefore working with NHibernate in a disconnected mode. I'm already using the NHibernate PreUpdate and PreInsert EventListeners to perform some metadata operations (updating Create/Update date, created/updated by etc) and they are working fine. I now have a requirement to perform data logging on some of my domain objects. So I will need to have an audit table that has a before-save and after-save state of certain entities. I had wanted to use the @event.Persister.OldState and @event.Persister.NewState to perform this logging, but because I am in a disconnected scenario (using different Sessions from when data is retrieved to when it is persisted), @event.Persister.OldState is null when I am saving my changes back to the database. How is anyone else doing data logging in a disconnected scenario with NHibernate?

  In the recent iOS 4.2 update, Apple introduced a nice animation for creating one level directories. I am trying to figure out how to implement a similar animation in my project. I would deeply appreciate it if anyone could give me any pointers to do this efficiently. From my investigation, I believe this animation or effect could be done very efficiently using Core Image which would allow me to write a custom filter. Unfortunately, Core Image is not available in iPhone. So how can do it? I read a blog post that explained a core animation scheme to create an iPad flip clock. The problem I have is similar but has important differences. Besides, I not excited about saving the subimage combinations, which I believe can cause a memory issue. Please enlighten me on the possible ways of doing this animation. I am relatively new to iOS programming, so I might have missed obvious ways of doing this animation or effect.

• Restore history and current page on resuming webview

  I have a webview that I use to navigate from page to page. I have implemented go back and go forward. My problem is that when I return to the webview after visiting another activity, the history is lost i.e. the webview starts again on the first page. How do I code it so that after I call finish on the webview to swap to another activity on returning to the webview, the WebBackForwardList is restored and I am taken to the page I was on when I left the webview? I have tried overriding onSaveInstanceState and onRestoreInstanceState using webview.save/restoreState(bundle) but with no success. I have achieved returning to the last page by saving the last url in preferences, but have been unable to restore the entire history.

• Exposing a "dumbed-down", read-only instance of a Model in GAE

  Does anyone know a clever way, in Google App Engine, to return a wrapped Model instance that only exposes a few of the original properties, and does not allow saving the instance back to the datastore? I'm not looking for ways of actually enforcing these rules, obviously it'll still be possible to change the instance by digging through its __dict__ etc. I just want a way to avoid accidental exposure/changing of data. My initial thought was to do this (I want to do this for a public version of a User model): class ReadOnlyUser(db.Model): display_name = db.StringProperty() @classmethod def kind(cls): return 'User' def put(self): raise SomeError() Unfortunately, GAE maps the kind to a class early on, so if I do ReadOnlyUser.get_by_id(1) I will actually get a User instance back, not a ReadOnlyUser instance.

• Creating an Order Column for encrypted data

  I am saving encrypted data to a database. Is there a way I can create a "hashcode" or fingerprint or checksum of the plain text data, that if I sort / order by on the "hashcode" the order would be the same as if I had saved the plain text data and perform the same sort / order by operation on it? I basically need a SOUNDEX() type function that will give me a value that will maintain the order of the plain text data. I would then save both encrypted data and the "hashcode" and when querying the data order by the "hashcode" field. I need to perform this in the application and preferably not in the SQL DB if at all possible. I am using Entity Framework and SQL 2008 and C# 4.0.

• Temporary files & folders on Windows

  Emulating multithreading by loading a DLL multiple times (it's designed for this). Since LoadLibrary() doesn't really allow it, the DLL copies itself into a temporary file, via GetTempPath() and GetTempFileName(). It's a small file and upon thread destruction it frees the library and deletes the temporary file. Problem now is that the number of threads is configurable (maniacs can pick 50, 100, more) which basically exposes the risk of running unstable, crash and not go through the usual "delete temporary files" routine. Is it okay if I just leave those temporary files to die there? Does the OS usually clean the up by itself? Or should I write an autocleanup routine? If yes, how can I go about saving another temporary file to hold a list with those files, and not hit UAC restrictions or otherwise? Any ideas?
