  • Does setting an A record for a root domain set it (automatically) for subdomains?

    - by Edan Maor
I bought a domain from Dreamhost, but my servers are actually running on Amazon's AWS. I have an Elastic IP, say 1.1.1.1. In the Dreamhost panel, I've added an A record for my domain name, pointing it to 1.1.1.1. My question is, are all subdomains (e.g. www.mydomain.com, a.mydomain.com, etc.) automatically mapped to 1.1.1.1 as well, because the root is? Or do I have to add separate rules for each subdomain?

  • IIS 6 ip address mixup

    - by Jose
Ok, just wondering if others have experienced the following. We have two websites configured in IIS 6 pointing to two different static IPs for the past couple days website A's IP address began to resolving to website B's ip address. It seemed to happen all of a sudden. When we looked at IIS the IPs looked to be configured correctly but when we would ping the websites both would point to website B's IP. Any ideas?

  • cname and wordpress domain map

    - by andre
I have a domain like this (www.example.com.br) and I'm also the manager for the domain and the nameservers too (the nameservers are Bind). Now I have a blog from wordpress.com and I wanted to map domain to www.88.example.com.br. The wordpress suggested to use this: 88.example.com.br IN CNAME example88.wordpress.com. Can I create a zone file with only that CNAME ? Can I use other zone file that already exists, like this ? $ORIGIN 88.example.com.br. 88.example.com.br IN CNAME exmple88.wordpress.com. Thanks in advance

  • Rules for setting hostname [duplicate]

    - by Ilia Rostovtsev
This question already has an answer here: Hostnames - What are they all about? 5 answers Setting the hostname: FQDN or short name? 6 answers It's thought that for the hostname should be used FQDN. I have a doubts about whether using: host.domain.ltd and domain.ltd for the hostname is the same thing and will be equally correct / acceptable? I'm willing to use domain.ltd for the hostname. Is it alright?

  • Google Apps: MX records for zonefile

    - by 23tux
Hi everybody, I have a question about using Google Apps for handling emails. I don't want to set up a whole entire mail system on my server, so I decided to use Google Apps. The ownership of my domain is approved, and now I'm trying to change the MX records in the zone file of my domain. But I think I'm doing wrong, it doesn't work. I want to use mail.mydomain.com as a adress to the mail server for POP, SMTP and IMAP. My zone file looks like this: $TTL 86400 @ IN SOA ns1.first-ns.de. postmaster.robot.first-ns.de. ( 2011011700 ; serial 14400 ; refresh 1800 ; retry 604800 ; expire 86400 ) ; minimum @ IN NS robotns3.second-ns.com. @ IN NS robotns2.second-ns.de. @ IN NS ns1.first-ns.de. @ IN A 111.111.111.111 localhost IN A 127.0.0.1 www IN A 111.111.111.111 ftp IN CNAME www loopback IN CNAME localhost mail IN CNAME @ relay IN CNAME www @ IN MX 10 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. @ IN MX 10 ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. @ IN MX 10 ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. @ IN MX 10 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. @ IN MX 10 ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. I hope someone can figure out, what's wrong with this configuration. When I start a ping on mail.mydomain.org I get an answer from 111.111.111.111 and not from the google server ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. thx, tux

  • How to map email addresses on subdomains

    - by Glen Little
Is it possible to create email addresses like these: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] and have them all handled by one mail server, as three different mail boxes? (Many examples I've seen talk about directing mail to [email protected] into the same mail box as [email protected] - but this is not what I'm looking for.) I haven't specified the server technology being used because I'm wondering if this is generally possible. If you know that server x can do this, please mention it in your answer! Is it correct that MX records can be set to direct email to all subdomains *.mydomain.com to one mail server? Is that still true if there are also web sites at those subdomains (using A records)? Thanks!

  • Browser considering www domain and without www domain different

    - by user1444680
I've bought a domain name and hosted it. My browser is storing separate passwords for mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com, and also caching them separately. I want these two to be considered the same website. The zone records of mydomain.com are: "A" record: "@" points to the IP address of my hosting CNAME: www points to "@" As CNAME signifies alias, shouldn't browser understand (like search engines do) that the two URLs refer to the same website? Is it browser's fault? Please tell how to correct the problem? Do I need to enter some other record for www instead of CNAME?

  • can i have a subdomain pointed at one ip with a wildcard entry pointed at a different domain

    - by cori
I have a domain with a wildcard subdomain entry pointed at IP-A: domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx *.domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Can I create another CNAME pointing a spcified subdomain at a different IP. Or, rather, if I create such an entry, will it resolve to the 2nd IP?: domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx *.domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx thing.domain-a.com -> yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy Will that work? Does it even make sense?

  • pdns-recursor allocates resources to non-existing queries

    - by azzid
I've got a lab-server running pdns-recursor. I set it up to experiment with rate limiting, so it has been resolving requests openly from the whole internet for weeks. My idea was that sooner or later it would get abused, giving me a real user case to experiment with. To keep track of the usage I set up nagios to monitor the number of concurrent-queries to the server. Today I got notice from nagios that my specified limit had been reached. I logged in to start trimming away the malicious questions I was expecting, however, when I started looking at it I couldn't see the expected traffic. What I found is that even though I have over 20 concurrent-queries registered by the server I see no requests in the logs. The following command describes the situation well: $ sudo rec_control get concurrent-queries; sudo rec_control top-remotes 22 Over last 0 queries: How can there be 22 concurrent-queries when the server has 0 queries registered? EDIT: Figured it out! To get top-remotes working I needed to set ################################# # remotes-ringbuffer-entries maximum number of packets to store statistics for # remotes-ringbuffer-entries=100000 It defaults to 0 storing no information to base top-remotes statistics on.

  • Squid 2.7 in offline_mode yet tries to contact DNS servers to resolve addresses

    - by William C
I installed Squid 2.7 to act as a web cache on my laptop, so that I can browse previously-visited sites when I don't have WiFi. Except http_access allow all, I've made no changes to the default squid.conf configuration. When I turn offline_mode ON and disconnect from the Internet, and then I visit sites, I encounter The following error was encountered: Unable to determine IP address from host name for whatever.sitename.com The dnsserver returned: Timeout on any site I visit. What settings do I need to add to squid.conf so I can browse sites offline?

  • Changing 127.0.0.1:81 to Internal Domain Name ?

    - by Tom
Hi, I was wondering the steps I can take to change the localhost name to a test development domain name like "website.dev" on Win7 x64 ? Currently, when my test website builds its assigned to 127.0.0.1:81 but I want this to instead have a name like "website.dev" that is accessible on my local network ? [and sure any Virtual PCs built on this local PC] I think this is done via the hosts file but I am little unsure how to do this ? Would someone be able to assist ? Thx

  • Create a new domain with the same name of a trusted domain

    - by Russ
I have a domain blah.com that was aquired a while back by my company foo.com. I set up a two way trust between the two domains, but now I want to move their servers into our forest, while keeping the domain name of blah.com. Is this possible? What things do I need to consider when doing this? I know I can't move the domain from its forest into our forest. blah.com is a 2003 native domain/forest foo.com is a 2008R2 domain/2003 forest.

  • Is it possible to map static IP to computer name instead of MAC address?

    - by xenon
I have a number of computers with different hostnames connected to the network. They currently hold a static IP address based on their MAC address. In other words, the static IP address is mapped to their MAC address. This gives rise to a problem and that's when we swap the harddrive from one computer to another, the MAC address becomes different and the application we are running on the harddrive has problem getting the right static IP for it to work. We can't configure the IP address in the application all the time. And changing the static IP addresses to re-map to the computer's new MAC address can be quite a pain. Since all the computers have a unique computer name as their hostname, is it possible to configure such that when these computers grab IP addresses from the DHCP server, DHCP will learn about their hostname and assign the correct IP address? This is to say, the static IP is mapped to the computers' hostname instead of their MAC address. All the computers are running on Windows 7. Would this be possible? If so how should I go about do this?

  • Cname to multi-level heroku subdomain

    - by user123424234
I'm trying to create a cname that points from my custom domain (s.mydomain.com) to a multilevel subdomain hosted on heroku (me.myapp.herokuapp.com). I've created the Cname s.mydomain.com with the value me.myapp.herokuapp.com. When I go to s.mydomain.com it does not route to me.myapp.herokuapp.com, instead I get: method=GET path=/ host=s.mydomain.com dyno=web.1 queue=0 wait=0ms connect=4ms service=18ms status=404 It's possible I'm not fully understanding how this Cname should be setup. My desired outcome is for s.mydomain.com to act as if it were at me.myapp.herokuapp.com.

I removed the MOSS machine from the domain and cannot rejoin. When I ping the MOSS machine from DC, I get the following response: Pinging MOSS [192.168.0.152] Reply from 192.168.0.192 Destination host unreachable (4 times) When I ping the MOSS machine from SQL, I get the following response: Pinging MOSS [192.168.0.152] Reply from 192.168.0.153 Destination host unreachable (4 times) From the MOSS machine, I can ping the server names, however I cannot ping the FQDN. When I ping from the DC and SQL machines, I get IPv4 addresses. When I ping from the MOSS machine, I get IPv6 addresses. I'm a developer and don't know what steps to take to resolve this issue. • setting up my own name server

    - by mmokh
I'm in the process of setting up my own name servers using BIND9, however I want to visualize the name server setup in relation to registrars and other name servers. Say I have a domain www.mydomain.com I setup my 2 name servers: ns1.mydomain.com - 192.168.0.1 ns2.mydomain.com - 192.168.0.2 1) How does the world know that my name servers are now at ns1.mydomain and ns2.mydomain. I read about setting up glue records at my registrar. Could you please elaborate on this, i.e. once i setup these glue records, can I now use my name servers in NS records for any other domain? For e.g. NS records for www.otherdomain.com - ns1.mydomain.com/ns2.mydomain.com 2) Given I setup the glue records as mentioned above, do I "have to" update mydomain.com NS records to point to my name servers? Can I keep mydomain.com NS records pointing to my registrars name servers, however use ns1.mydomain.com/ns2.mydomain.com as name servers for any other domain I own? Thanks

  • Server Intermittently Inaccessible Externally (but Accessible Internally Continuously)

    - by nicorellius
I have a CRM on a server on a network. We have a static IP and another server outward facing. We use port-forwarding to map to the CRM, so that when you go to the IP or the FQDN, you get to the CRM: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx crm.example.com Internally, we can access the CRM by going to crm or crm.example.com Lately, I've been noticing that accessing the server from outside the network times out or gives 503, bad gateway. During that time, I can also SSH (different port, so this works) into the outward facing computer and access the server just fine. I have a robot monitoring the site and indeed via HTTP monitoring the site is going down periodically. I looked through the Apache server access and error logs and nothing stuck out at me so I'm a bit confused as to what could be going on. I also searched the access logs for 503 and found nothing. When I run tracert from outside the network, it appears the packets basically make it through the wider area servers (Comcast city and county servers) and end up dropping at the CRM server's front step. I'm tempted to replace the server because it is older and underpowered but it would be nice to know what is going on. Any ideas what to do next?

  • Server not resolving after restart

    - by DomainSoil
I restarted our server today, and now cannot for the life of me get anything to resolve... I suspect it has something to do with our routes. I've tried numerous Google results to no avail. Here is as far as I've gotten: [root@www ~]# route -n Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.1.101 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 eth1 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.101 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth1 Things you need to know: Our server (CentOS 6.3) runs two virtual machines, one live, and one development. They mirror each other as much as possible, but I can't find where I've went wrong with the live server. The dev server works fine. • I want to host my own multiple Websites on my server. How do i setup my own child nameserver?

    - by basilmir
I host my own multiple Websites on my server. How do i setup my own child nameserver? There are 4 different websites, with .com and .net and .ro at the end. I moved them to my own server. My Domain Administration (Registrar) let's me define my own child nameserver with my own IP and i've added my nameserver as my domain nameservers list. ns.something.ro as the first and only in the nameservers list ns.something.ro with my own IP address as the child nameserver I've setup everything and it works (kind of). When i use my ns IP adress directly i can of course access everything. Using "normal" external dnses will not work. As expected others on the web can't resolve correctly. What's wrong? Am i missing something?
