• Linux Mint on VirtualBox has no internet connection

  Physical machine: Mac Mini running OSX 10.7.5 Virtual machine: Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon 64-bit Using VirtualBox. I am trying to make the linux connect to the internet. For some reason I can access the host computer with 192.168.2.100. Its set up to show me a web-page that says "It works". This I can see from the linux. But I cannot reach anything on the internet. Either FireFox says "Unable to connect" or when I run nslookup google.com I get connection timed out; no servers could be reached. My setting on VirtualBox under the Network tab are: Bridge Adapter vnic0 promiscouos Mode:Allow All`. If it makes a difference, the host has a WiFi connection to the home router. What have I missed?

• Establish direct cable connection between Windows 8 PCs in home network

  I'm running two PCs, a desktop and a laptop with Windows 8 Release Preview ("Build 8400"). They are connected to the same router in infrastructure mode, thereby having wireless internet. Due to often file synchronization between the machines I want to establish a cable connection that allows direct file transfer, without needing to use the wireless. When I plug in the cable (normal, not cross-over), I see in "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections": "Ethernet - unidentified Network" on both PCs. Transferring a file between both still only uses the WiFi via the Router. I noticed that when turning off the wifi on one PC, I can set up a shared internet connection that will work via Ethernet-cable, but since sometimes only one PC runs, sometimes the other one, I do not want to have the internet of one machine to be dependent on the other one being switched on. I do not have a crossover-cable, but since I did connect the PCs already successfully (just without both being on the internet), I'm sure that this should also work with a normal ethernet cable.

• force connection using USB adapter

  Hi all I am new to Linux, so even though this is probably a simple problem it remains unsolved after more then 3 hours of googling :-( I run running ubuntu 10.04 LTS on an Acer Aspire 5520G . the laptop has a wireless adapter, but since I wanted better range I got an Edimax EW-7711USN USB adapter. now , when running ifconfig I am able to see both adapters where as the laptop native adapter is listed as wlan0 and the usb adapter is listed as wlan1. but listing available networks from the wireless network applet , all the connection are listed under wlan0 , the usb adapter is costencly listed as disconnected. this is what I have been trying to do so far 1) ifconfig wlan0 down - I got disconnected from the net but still was not able to get the usb to connect 2) used the wireless connection dialog to connect to a hidden network with the usb adapter - I was able to connect to the network but with no Internet access 3) disable wireless using the laptop function button - both wireless adapters where disabled can anyone suggest a way to connect to to the wireless network using the USB adapter rather then the built in one ?   Hi, I have a nginx server with 5 backend servers. We serve around 400-500 requests/second. I have started getting a large number of Upstream Timed out errors (110: Connection timed out) Error string in error.log looks like 2011/01/10 21:59:46 [error] 1153#0: *1699246778 upstream timed out (110: Connection timed out) while reading response header from upstream, client: {IP}, server: {domain}, request: "GET {URL} HTTP/1.1", upstream: "http://{backend_server}:80/{url}", host: "{domain}", referrer: "{referrer}" Any suggestions how to debug such errors. I am unable to find a munin plugin to keep a check on number of upstream errors. Sometime the number of errors per day is way too high and somedays its a more decent 3 digit number. A munin graph would probably help us finding out any pattern or correlation with anything else How can we make the number of such error as ZERO

  I am currently using Reliance netconnect USB modem. The problem I am facing is my USB modem disconnects itself at 22:00 PM IST everyday. Now, sometimes what I do is start some downloading and leave my laptop for 2-3 hours in this case if my network disconnects it is a problem for me. So, what I used to do in windows is make a python script and execute rasdial myconnection_name to automate the connection process in my absence. Now I want to achieve something similar in linux. • Log connections to program

  Besides for using iptables to log incoming connections.. Is there a way to log established inbound connections to a service that you don't have the source to (suppose the service doesn't log stuff like this on its own)? What I'm wanting to do is gather some information based on who's connecting to be able to tell things like what times of the day the service is being used the most, where in the world the main user base is, etc. I am aware I can use netstat and just hook it up to a cron script, but that might not be accurate, since the script could only run as frequently as a minute. Here is what I am thinking right now: Write a program that constantly polls netstat, looking for established connections that didn't appear in the previous poll. This idea seems like such a waste of cpu time though, since there may not be a new connection.. Write a wrapper program that accepts inbound connections on whatever port the service runs on, but then I wouldn't know how to pass that connection along to the real service. Edit: Just occurred to me that this question might be better for stackoverflow, though I am not certain. Sorry if this is the wrong place.

• Traffic shaping L2TP/IPsec VPN (via accounts not connection)

  I need to be able to control the amount of bandwidth a specific user account can use on a VPN connection. One account I want to be able to use the VPN with no restrictions and another account I want to limit to a reasonable amount of bandwidth (say 10GB or so a month). I'm aware that you can traffic shape individual connections but that does not quite solve the problem as the limited account can just disconnect and reconnect to get a new connection. I need to be able to limit bandwidth on a login basis for a given period of time (monthly limit). I'm really not that familiar with traffic shaping in general so any advice would be appreciated. • Process vsserv.exe attempts connection to unknown host (clients.your-server.de)

  from past few day I notice a new connection is being made from my system, I discovered it within the outpost firewall, it is blocked by default with the reason Block Transit Packets in the image above you can see that the process vsserv.exe is attempting a connection to static.88-198-155-41.clients.your-server.de I tried to search on google but could not find any relevant info, however this link http://www.webmasterworld.com/search_engine_spiders/3963600.htm says that your-server.de hosts bad bots. I am bit concerned if something is not correct. Could you help me understand the same?

• Hyper-V VM guest can't ping any machine

  So I got Host: Hyper-v enabled machine with four NICs, only one enabled. Network type: External IP configuration are correct for both host and guest (getting it from the DHCP of the company network) The same configuration works on a machine with single NIC But With this other machine, with 4 NICs, there is no Internet in the guest, actually it can't ping any IP expect the host (pings host IP only, not the name) I searched the Internet and did every solution, more than once, with no success.

• Can I boot my notebook via eSata pci-xpress card?

  I would like to boot directly from an external hard disk to improve performance over my internal notebook hard disk. My notebook has no native eSata jack but a pci express card. As my BIOS doesn't support the card on boot time so no way directly booting it. My question is, is it possible to work around this issue by using an USB stick or similar with a boot loader like grub and if so, will this only work for Linux or Windows as well?

• Why do firewire drives on Mac OS cause processes to go into uninterruptible wait?

  I have a Western Digital My Passport Studio external hard drive. It works with either Firewire 800 or USB 2.0. I've noticed that when I have it connected to Firewire, after a few hours, processes on my Mac start to go into an uninterruptible wait state. Eventually the system becomes so hard locked that I can't even shut it down. I have Spotlight indexing of the drive disabled, and the mds process seems to be the one that triggers this eventual system collapse.

• Cannot Ping PS3 Using a Wired Connection

  PS3 is using the inbuilt wireless network adapter (I cannot change this) When I try to ping the PS3 from ANY computer which is on a wired ethernet connection, I get Request Timed Out errors. Whenever I ping from a computer with a wireless connection, it works just fine. To be clear: Pinging from Wireless PC to Wireless PS3 works Pinging from Wired PC to Wireless PS3 fails I have tried this on several PC's and Laptops all with the same results. As an attempted solution I have set up static IP's on all related devices. More information: Default Gateway = 192.168.2.1 PS3(wireless) = 192.168.2.100 PC(wired) = 192.168.2.99 Subnet Mask(for both devices, I have made sure) = 255.255.255.0 Thanks

• Spoof database connection to be local instead of remote

  I am trying to connect one of our clients "as is" programs to a remote database instead of a local one, they say that they have coded it to be able to do it, but for some reason the program crashes when trying to connect to a remote database. I don't have the source code so I can't really dig much deeper than that and the company does not provide any upgrades or custom modifications. I can succesfully connect to the database through SqlDbx and HeidiSQL so I know that the server is set up correctly. This is why I need to find a way to spoof a remote connection on port 1433 to appear like a local database connection to the program. I thought about editing the hosts file, but it will most likely crash other programs if I bind localhost to another IP than 127.0.0.1. Any ideas?

• Slow remote desktop connection to VPS

  When I use Windows 7's remote desktop connection to our company's VPS (Win Server 2008 32bit) I receive a very slow connection - most of the times it actually grinds down to a complete halt. This is in contrast to my team mates which have no problem remoting to the VPS. I'm using a brand new Dell Studio 1558 laptop with Intel Core i7 and 4GB RAM with a clean installation of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. Any suggestions for how to diagnose \ solve \ workaround the problem would be appreciated. UPDATES: I checked, and it seems the problem exists with all the computers connected to my home LAN. Once I take my laptop to the nearest coffee shop it works fine. What could be the problem with the LAN?

• Remote desktop connection dos not respond anymore (no more task bar)

  I have a remote desktop connection (from my home) to the company's server. On this I opened a Remote Desktop Connection Manager and inside this connect to a specific server. I was busy copying a file but this task never ends. So I kill the process and now I have a blue screen and no more taskbar. Very frustrating. When I try CTRL+ALT+END (=CTRL+ALT+DEL) this is executed on the main server and not the server which gives me the blue screen. I don't know if I'm clear. I know I should have keep Task Manager open and type Run... explorer.exe but I closed it. Any help is really appreciated!

  Network Setup: 10.0.0.1 Router: to internet 10.0.0.70 Server: Ubuntu based server,default gateway is 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.51 PC I created a PPTP connection(interface: ppp0) on Server to a machine on the internet, what I want to do is route all the traffic from certain IP address(10.0.0.51) through the PPTP connection and then to the internet. What I did are: Set the gateway on PC(10.0.0.51) as 10.0.0.70 Enabled ipv4 forward on 10,0,0,70 Add the masquerade rule to iptable: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -s 10.0.0.51 -j MASQUERADE After that, it seems none of the traffic from 10.0.0.51 be redirected to ppp0, instead these traffic are still going through 10.0.0.1 directly. Any thoughts on it?

• Speed up connection to MySQL

  So here's one for you. Any idea on a way to shorten the time it takes to connect to a MySQL database? The reason I'm wondering is because I find that just connecting to the DB adds just over a second to the rendering of the page and that seems a bit long considering Apache and MySQL is running on the same machine and the mysqli_connect is connecting to localhost. It's just such a shame when the connection takes a second while any query I end up doing won't add any significant amount of time to the render/load time. Any ways to shorten the time it takes to open a connection?

• Synergy over a LAN bridge in Windows 7 64-bit, connection timing out

  I haven't seen a question like this anywhere, so I hope it isn't a duplicate. Anyway, I have two computers, and one of them has its network connection through a LAN bridge in the other, which goes to a router. I want to set them up so that the one with the bridge is the server, and the other is the client. I followed the instructions to get everything set up, and the client keeps saying that the connection timed out. • Including objects from external .js files

  I have been searching for many hours over several days for this answer and though there are many topics on how to include files in a project (also here at Stack Overflow), I have not yet found THE solution to my problem. I'm working on a project where I want to include one single object at a time, from many different files (I do not want to include the files themselves, only their content). All the object in all the files have the same name, only the content is different. It is important that I do not get a SCRIPT tag in the head section of the page as all the content from the files will have the same names. None of the files will have functions anyways, only one single object, that will need to be loaded one at the time and then discarded when the next element is loaded.
