• Grub Rescue Unknown Filesystem Error. Grub Corrupted or Filesystem?

  Now it has happened twice & have been pulling my hairs now... I have installed xubuntu on my external hardisk & have been using it for about 3 months. It has three partitions, one of 500 mb mounted at /boot, 2nd one of 48gb mounted at / & the rest (out of 160gb) is ntfs partition....used as normal external storage. The last storage supposedly acts as a buffer b/w Linux distributions & Win platform, buffer in the sense that it provides a universal channel for data transfers. I have constantly used this external hardisk for data transfers b/w win7 laptop & xubuntu (on this external hd) without any hassle. However, on of my desktops where I have ubuntu I (for the first time) attached this external drive which let me do data transfers where all three partitions properly mounted....but then nasty thing occurred the same that occurred before. I (as usual) tried booting via this external hd (one having xubuntu, one having being formerly used under Ubuntu) I got error Now I am totally devastated because similar thing happened ~6months before when I had fedora 17 in my external hd (instead of xubuntu) & after it was used under ubuntu the same happened...i didn't reported it because I already had planned towards debian instead of rpm! The mystery is that as long as I don't attach this external hd under ubuntu the data never** corrupts whereas under win xp/7 I can use it as a normal usb storage of coarse linux partitions aren’t available under win platforms... **From corrupts I mean hd fails to boot with the error mentioned however cant say whether data within remains untouched? It seems that my grub & or MBR is corrupted. • Can any iSCSI NAS appliance replicate / clone a LUN to an external drive?

  I would like to backup using Windows Imaging to some kind of NAS appliance. I believe this will require the NAS to support iSCSI. I would then like the appliance to support the replication of the iSCSI LUN to an external eSATA or USB disk connected directly to the appliance. I've found plenty of NAS appliances that can do iSCSI and replicate to an external drive, but none that I've found thus far can do both at once. That is, the devices can do iSCSI, but then the replication feature doesn't work. The idea here is to backup to an appliance located in a secure office far away from the server room. Offsite backups to external hard drive could be managed from the appliance. The benefits of such a setup would be: 1) very unlikely that fire or random theft would affect both server-room backup and "remote" backup appliance 2) offsite backups could be managed by multiple trusted people without granting access to server room 3) Windows imaging provides poor man's deduplication, so each backup volume can contain a decent backup history. I understand why this would be a non-trivial thing to implement, but I'm wondering if such a thing exists? Preferably a tabletop, low to medium cost device. Alternative solutions welcome. NOTE: I'm backing up very few but very large files, so file replication is not a good option.

• Am I able to forward traffic from an external subdomain to a specific local host?

  I apologise in advance if the question doesn't make sense, please let me know. I've got a small LAN (~10 Virtual Servers) using Win Server 2008 as a DNS server. This is behind a smoothwall express 3.0 firewall with ports forwarded for specific services. I have a domain (123-reg) with the NS's that of afraid.org (DynamicDNS) and subdomains pointed to my (Dynamic) IP address e.g. subdomain1.example.com - 123.456.789.101. I think that adequately explains my set up. My question is, am I able to have subdomains e.g. subdomain1.example.com only point to a specific local host? Like so: subdomain1.example.com:80 - firewall(external facing) - server1.example.com:80 subdomain2.example.com:80 - firewall(external facing) - server2.example.com:80 I don't actually necessarily want to use port 80, otherwise I would just use VirtualHosts on apache, it is just an example port. Currently I can use either subdomain1.example.com OR subdomain2.example.com and they will both point to server1.example.com:80 I do not have to stay using Win Server 2008 for DNS, I am more than happy to move over to BIND if needs be, it was just easier to use Win Server 2008's DNS. I do not know if this is even possible, I have a feeling it isn't as I've only got one external IP address but any information is useful!

• How can I pass an external instance to the constructor of an object that's being created using the default XNA XML content loader?

  I'm trying to understand how to use the XNA XML content importer to instantiate non-trivial objects that are more than a collection of basic properties (e.g., a class that inherits from DrawableGameObject or GameObject and requires other things to be passed into its constructor). Is it possible to pass existing external instances (e.g., an instance of the current Game) to the constructor of an object that's being created using the default XNA XML content loader? For example, imagine that I have the following class, inheriting from DrawableGameComponent: public class Character : DrawableGameComponent { public string Name { get; set; } public Character(Game game) : base(game) { } public override void Update(GameTime gameTime) { } public override void Draw(GameTime gameTime) { } } If I had a simple class that did not need other parameters in its constructor (i.e., the Game instance), then I could simply use this XML: <XnaContent> <Asset Type="MyNamespace.Character"> <Name>John Doe</Name> </Asset> </XnaContent> ...and then create an instance of Character using this code: var character = Content.Load<Character>("MyXmlAssetName"); But that won't work because I need to pass the need to pass the Game into the constructor. • How should a JEE application store credentials for logging in to an external system?

  I am in a situation where I have a Web Application (WAR) that is accessing a REST service provided by another application. The REST service uses Basic HTTP Authentication. So that means the application calling the REST service needs to store user credentials somehow. To further complicate things, this is an enterprise, so there are different 'regions' the application moves through which will have different credentials for the same service (think local development, development region, integration region, user test region, production, etc...) My first instinct is that the credentials should be stored by the JEE container and the application should ask the container for the credentials (probably via JNDI?). I'm beginning to read about Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS) but I'm not sure if that is the appropriate solution to this problem. How should a JEE application store credentials for logging in to an external system? A few more details about my WAR. It is a Spring-Integration project that has no front-end. The container I am working with is Websphere. I am using JEE 5 and Spring 4.0.1. To this point I have not needed to consider spring-security... does this situation mean I should re-evaluate that decision?

• How do I 'see' an external USB drive connected directly to my Broadband Router?

  This is a very frustrating problem! I have a small home network with several dual boot Ubuntu / Windows computers. I have recently upgraded my Broadband connection and the new router permits the direct attachment of an external USB drive which can back up all of the household's computers. There are no problems when booted under Windows, and there were no problems with older versions of UBUNTU, but since upgrading to 11.10 I can no longer "see" the drive. • Is full partition encryption the only sure way to make Ubuntu safe from external access?

  (By "external access", I mean eg. via a Live CD, or another OS on the same dual-boot machine) A friend wants to try Ubuntu. He's fed up with Vista grinding to a crawl (the kids? :), so he likes the "potential" security offered by Ubuntu, but because the computer will be multi-booting Ubuntu (primary) and 2 Vistas (one for him, if he ever needs it again, and the other one for the kids to screw up (again). However, he is concerned about any non-Ubuntu access to the Ubuntu partitions (and also to his Vista partition)... I believe TrueCrypt will do the job for his Vista, but I'd like to know what the best encryption system for Ubuntu is... If TrueCrypt works for Ubuntu, it may be the best option for him, as it would be the same look and feel for both. Ubuntu will be installed with 3 partitions; 1) root 2) home 3) swap.. Will Ubuntu's boot loader clash with TrueCrypt's encrypted partition? PS.. Is encryption a suitable solution?

  I am using VS2010, CrystalReport13 & MVC3. My problem is unable to add an external assembly in Crystal Report using "Database Expert" Option. I have a class named WeeklyReportModel in an external assembly. In my web project, data retrieving from DB as IEnumerable collection of WeeklyReportModel. I tried ProjectData - .NetObjects in Crystal Report for adding the WeeklyReportModel. But this external assembly is not showing under ".NetObjects". Then I tried other option as Create New Connection - ADO.Net – Make New Connection and pointed this External Assembly. It has been added under Ado.Net node, but while expanding displays as "...no items found..." Totally frustrated. Please help. • How to load an external swf to the main stage from an instanced child class?

  Hi, I am trying to get an instance of a class to the load an external swf and show it. So far I have the following: 1) I wrote a class that uses the Loader class to load an external swf "loadExtSWF". 2) I have a fla named "MainSWF.fla" that uses a document class "MainSWF.as". 3) I have the MainSWF.as file that instances "loadExtSWF" and calls loadExtSWF.startLoad to load the swf. This almost works. The instance of loadExtSWF loads the external swf, but the swf is not displayed. If I replace the fla's document class with loadExtSWF (this has an empty constructor) instead of MainSWF, and run loadExtSWF.startLoad, then the external swf is loaded and displayed. It seems that the way I initially do it, loads the swf to the wrong stage (?). Any ideas? Thanks for the help. Bye, RaamEE P.S. • MySQL – How to Find mysqld.exe with Command Prompt – Fix: ‘mysql’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

  One of the most popular question I get after watching my MySQL courses on Pluralsight is that beginning users are not able to find where they have installed MySQL Server. The error they receive is as follows when they type mysqld command on their default command line. ‘mysql‘ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. This error comes up if user try to execute mysqld command on default command prompt. The user should execute this command where mysql.exe file exists.  If you are using Windows Explorer you can easily search on your drive mysqld.exe and find the location of the file and execute the above command there. However, if you want to find out with command prompt the location of mysqld.exe file you can follow the direction here. Step 1: Open a command prompt Open command prompt from Start >> Run >> cmd >> enter Step 2: Change directory You need to change the default directory to root directory, hence type cd\ command on the prompt to change the default directory to c:\ . Here we are assuming that you have installed MySQL on your c: drive. If you have installed it on any other drive change the drive to that letter. Step 3: Search Drive Type the command dir mysqld.exe /s /p on the command prompt. It will search your directories and will list the directory where mysqld.exe is located. Step 4: Change Directory Now once again change your command prompt file location to the folder where your mysqld.exe is located. In my case it is located here in folder C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin hence I will run following command: cd C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin . Step 5: Execute mysqld.exe Now you can once again mysqld.exe on your command prompt. You can use this method to search pretty much any file with the help of command prompt. • using own mail server with external domain and dns. Now have internal dns. dkim test not working

  I am not very knowledgeable in this area, but have been able to make great head way. Now i am stuck I setup my own mail server, e.g mailbox.example.com. I had the domain dns point to my mail server in my office. i was able to set up everything working fine. such as dkim and spf records. Recently i decided to setup an internal dns server in the office so as to resolve some addresses for some development servers internally. Ok the problem now is my mail server is sitting on the internal dns server (the mail server is on the same box as the dns server) its still able to send and receive emails but not sure if dkim is working properly. when i try to do a dkim test "amavisd test keys" i get "invalid (public key: not available)" and i know that that means i have a dns issue. so what should i do? I am currently looking at my internal dns zonefile and i dont know what to do (i am using bind dns server on an ubuntu-server box). do i configure a dkim txt record on the local dns ? or is there a way to forward dkim "request" to the external dns ? or do i have this whole thing done wrong ? To be clear Basically my internal domain name is the same as my external domain name (i.e example.com) i have a mail server within my internal domain mailbox.example.com, that uses my external domain dns (external dns has been setup to point to my emailserver (which of course is now sitting behind my internal dns)) dkim (i dont think its working because it fails the dkim test") Need help in determing the proper setup What is the proper way to set this up ? thank you Update: Here is my local dns zone file ; ; BIND data file for local loopback interface ; $TTL 604800 @ IN SOA webserver.example.com. root.example.com. • btrfs: can i create a btrfs file system with data as jbod and metadata mirrored

  I am trying to build a home server that will be my NAS/Media server as well a the XBMC front end. I am planning on using Ubuntu with btrfs for the NAS part of it. The current setup consists of 1TB hdd for the OS etc and two 2TB hdd's for data. I plan to have the 2TB hdd's used as JBOD btrfs system in which i can add hdd's as needed later, basically growing the filesystem online. They way I had setup the file system for testing was while installing the OS just have one of the HDD's connected and have btrfs on it mounted as /data. Later on add another hdd to this file system. When the second disk was added btrfs made as RAID 0, with metadata being RAID 1. However, this presents a problem: even if one of the disk fails I loose all my data (mostly media). Also most of the time the server will be running without doing any disk access, i.e. the HDD's can be spun down, when a access request comes in this with the current RAID 0 setup both disks will spin up. in case I manage a JBOD only the disk that has the file needs to be spun up. This should hopefully reduce the MTBF for each disk. So, is there a way in which I can have btrfs setup such that metadata is mirrored but data stays in a JBOD formation? Another question I have is this, I understand that a full drive failure in JBOD will lose data on the drive, but having metadeta mirrored across all drives, will this help the filesytem correct errors that migh creep in (ex bit rot?) and is btrfs capable of doing this.

• Hard drive spark, can it be recovered?

  Alright, so I was going to install Source Film Maker but I didn't have any space, so I decided to connect an HDD via an USB converter(image below). I shut down the machine, turned the PSU off, and connected via a Molex connector & the USB converter. I turned back on the PSU, no sparks or anything, everything normal, but when I turned on the machine, I heard some sizzing(lol?) and sparks flying and a little flame, but the PC was running fine. I pressed the power button instead pulling out the plug (I panicked) so it continued to short circuit for about 10 seconds. There's a very little part on the HDD that become ash, it's near the Molex connector and the circuit is a little black as well. I'm afraid that I will damage the HDD more so I didn't hook up the HDD after all. Do you think it's the PSU(came default with Cooler Master Elite 430, 500W) or it's the HDD(Samsung SP1203N)? P.S: I've attached the HDD same way before(like 3 months ago), and it worked. HDD burn: USB connector: Sorry for the bad image quality, taken with my phone.

• MBR seems to be gone

  So, horror story for everyone. I bought two spanking new HDD's. MM!! Gbitage. I removed all my old HDD's, physically labelled them, and was preparing to install all new HDD's (fresh sys install included!) To make sure what HDD was what, I popped each OLD HDD (data filleD!) into a Thermaltake Blacx toaster.. surprisingly BOTH couldn't be read. I didn't have static on my hands! I'm certain of it. I touched metal, touched wood, before beginning this all. Thinking that was strage, I hauled up the new sys, installed Win XP (of course!) on the new HDD, and now the two OLD HDD's (data filled!) that were entered into the toaster cannot be read. And they had tons of data on them. I read about MBR's being nuked and it sounds like that is what it is. But I'm at a loss what to do. There are so many MBR recovery programs out there, I kind of feel overwhelmed. I don't want to lose my data by just pikcing one, yet it seems so close within reach, I'm not panicking anymore.. Anybody have a play by play that I could follow? I just don't want to spend $900 on data recovery centers if I can do this myself..

• Adding SSD as boot drive to existing system

  I recently bought two 128GB SSDs that I'm planning on adding (RAID 0) to a system I currently have on a 1TB HDD. I'm hoping to redo the disk space such that the SSDs act as the boot drive (only other items would be things I install there explicitly) while the majority of my system is on the HDD - documents, media, program files. Something like this: SSD = [ OS | Explicitly placed programs] HDD = [ Program Files | Media | Documents | etc] I have an external drive capable of holding all the data I want to save, so the backup isn't too much of a concern. What I'm worried about is how I should go about doing this - do I need to do a clean install on the SSDs, reformat the HDD, move things like Program Files/Users to the HDD, and then restore data (not full programs but things like saves)? Should I be using one of the regedit hacks I've seen around to change the default install directories instead of moving program files and users? Should I have the actual folders on the HDD and symlinks on the SSD? Or is there a better solution? Do I need to disconnect my HDD while doing the clean Windows install?

  I've got a Bind 9 DNS server sitting behind a NAT firewall, assume the Internet facing IP is 1.2.3.4 There are no restrictions on outgoing traffic, and port 53 (TCP/UDP) is forwarded from 1.2.3.4 to the internal DNS server (10.0.0.1). There are no IP Tables rules on either the VPS or the internal Bind 9 server. It can show detailed information about the interface, but it will never show me my external IP address over a NAT network. However, there are several websites, such as "What is my IP address" that can get and show my external IP address. So I'm wondering, is possible to get this value externally? Should I expect that there is some way to get this information from a command line at my local machine... I need to get this value to log on an application that I'm doing with VBScript. There is some way to do this, from a "cmd" on Windows?

• New 3TB HDD, can see full 2.7TB in Linux and Windows, but shows up as 801.6GB in BIOS

  I recently purchased a Seagate Barracuda 3TB drive (ST3000DM001). After installing it, my BIOS recognized it but reported the size as 801.6gb. I went ahead and booted into Linux anyway (Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit). Linux saw it as a 2.7TB. Following some online instructions (don't have the link handy, unfortunately), it looks liked converting this drive to GPT was recommended. So I used gparted to do that, then formatted it to NTFS also using gparted. (I'm using NTFS because my machine is daul-boot and I want to have access to the drive in Windows too). I rebooted to Windows (Windows 7 64-bit), and Windows also sees the drive with 2.7TB free. Everything seems to be working fine. The only issue is that my BIOS is still reporting the drive as 801.6GB. My motherboard is an ASRock 770 Extreme3 and BIOS is the latest version. Since everything seems to be working with the new drive anyway, I'm hoping that the fact that the BIOS is reporting the wrong size is not an actual problem. But honestly, I don't really know. Anyone out there more familiar with this know if this could potentially cause any problems in the future? Any way to get the BIOS to report the correct size?
